To fix lag, dropouts, or microphone problems with PS5 wireless earbuds, first identify which connection is affected, then check charge, pairing, and the PS5’s sound routing before changing settings or replacing hardware. Sony’s device-specific guidance applies to PULSE Explore earbuds and the PlayStation Link USB adapter; its reset and pairing steps should not be assumed to apply to every third-party earbud.
PULSE Explore can use PlayStation Link and Bluetooth at the same time, so PS5 game audio and audio from a Bluetooth device may follow different paths. Test one source at a time, make one change at a time, and retest. For persistent faults after updates and the official reset procedure, contact PlayStation support.

What should I check first?
Start with the connection and the console’s output selection. These checks are free and can distinguish a routing or signal problem from a fault that may need support or repair.
- Identify the audio source. Is the delay, silence, or dropout affecting PS5 game audio over PlayStation Link, or sound from a separate Bluetooth device? If the earbuds are connected to both, pause or disconnect the Bluetooth source and test PS5 audio by itself. Then, if relevant, test the Bluetooth source separately. A symptom on one path does not establish that the other connection is faulty.
- Check charge and connection. Make sure the earbuds have charge, the PlayStation Link USB adapter is attached to the PS5 and connected, and the earbuds and adapter are connected to each other. If the earbuds will not stay connected, use Sony’s instructions for reconnecting the exact devices rather than applying a generic Bluetooth pairing procedure.
- Check where the PS5 is sending sound. In the console’s Sound settings, inspect the audio output device and headphones settings. Select the intended earbuds or PlayStation Link output where available. If sound is coming from the TV, confirm that the console has not selected the TV or another output instead.
- Change one thing, then retest. Keep the same game, chat, or audio source for each check. If you move the adapter or earbuds, change one position at a time so you can tell whether that helped.
PS5 menu names and available options can vary with system software and setup. If a label differs, look for the corresponding output-device, headphones, or microphone control under Settings > Sound rather than assuming a particular third-party accessory uses Sony’s exact workflow.

A useful first pass is to note what is working as well as what is failing. For example, distinguish “PS5 game sound cuts out, Bluetooth audio continues” from “both sources cut out.” Also note whether the microphone problem occurs only in one game or in more than one voice-chat context. These observations help direct the next check without prematurely blaming a particular component.
Why are my PS5 wireless earbuds lagging?
First determine whether the perceived delay is in PS5 audio over PlayStation Link or in audio from a Bluetooth device. Test the two sources separately, check that the PS5 is using the intended audio output, and make sure the relevant devices and console software are current.
PULSE Explore can maintain PlayStation Link and Bluetooth connections simultaneously. That does not, by itself, show that Bluetooth is slowing PlayStation Link. Instead of assuming the simultaneous connection is the cause, isolate the sound source: pause Bluetooth audio, listen to PS5 game audio, and then test Bluetooth separately if that is the audio that seemed delayed.
If PS5 audio is delayed, check that the earbuds and adapter are connected and that the console has not routed sound elsewhere. Then check for available software updates for the PS5 and the relevant device using Sony’s current instructions. Retest after each change. Sony’s support guidance in this area does not establish a universal latency target or a quantified improvement from resetting, so do not treat a particular number of milliseconds—or a promise of zero delay—as a diagnostic standard.
If only one game or one Bluetooth source seems delayed, note that difference before changing anything else. It helps distinguish a general PS5-to-earbud connection problem from behavior limited to a particular source. If delay persists on the PS5 connection after routing, connection, and software checks, follow the official reset and reconnection steps for the exact PULSE Explore devices, then contact PlayStation support if the problem remains.
When retesting, use the same source and conditions rather than switching between a game, a video, and a chat call and judging them together. The aim is not to prove a precise delay with an unsupported benchmark; it is to establish whether the delay follows PS5 audio, Bluetooth audio, or both. That distinction helps determine whether the next step is to inspect console routing and PlayStation Link, or to investigate the separate Bluetooth source.

Intermittent sound is a reason to check the wireless signal before concluding that the earbuds or adapter are defective. Confirm charge and connection, bring the earbuds closer to the PlayStation Link adapter, and retest away from plausible sources of wireless interference.

- Confirm the basic connection. Check that the adapter is still attached and connected to the PS5, the earbuds are charged, and the intended PlayStation Link connection is active.
- Reduce the distance. Move closer to the adapter and repeat the same listening test. If dropouts stop or become less frequent, distance or the local signal environment may be contributing.
- Try a clearer location. Where practical, reduce obstacles and move away from nearby devices or conditions that could plausibly interfere with a wireless signal. Retest in the same game or audio scenario; do not change several variables at once.
- Update and reconnect. Check for available updates, then use Sony’s current reconnection instructions for PULSE Explore and its PlayStation Link adapter.
- Use the device-specific reset if needed. Follow Sony’s exact reset procedure for the device being reset. A reset is not a substitute for confirming that the console is using the right output or that the adapter is connected.
Do not buy a replacement adapter solely because wireless audio drops out: interference or distance may produce the same symptom. A PlayStation Link USB adapter is a relevant replacement when the original is missing or confirmed faulty, after the free connection and signal checks. If the problem persists under the same conditions after those checks and Sony’s reset procedure, ask PlayStation support about repair or next steps instead of assuming replacement hardware is the answer.
For a clean comparison, first listen with the earbuds near the adapter, then repeat from the usual listening position. Keep the game or audio source and other conditions as consistent as practical. If the result changes with position, that is a reason to continue checking the signal environment—not proof that the adapter is broken. If it does not change, continue through connection, update, and official reset checks before deciding that a hardware fault is likely.
If the adapter is absent or cannot be confirmed as working after the relevant checks, the exact PlayStation Link USB adapter is the relevant replacement category to investigate. Check that the item is the PlayStation Link adapter intended for this connection; a generic Bluetooth USB dongle is not an interchangeable fix established for PlayStation Link audio.

A microphone that seems silent may be muted or not selected, or the input level may be too low. Check the PS5’s microphone controls before treating the earbuds as broken, then test outside the original game or party.
- Select the intended microphone. In Settings > Sound > Microphone, inspect the input device and select the microphone associated with the earbuds or intended connection, if it appears as an option.
- Check mute status. Make sure microphone mute is off. Check both the console’s mute state and any applicable control on the connected device.
- Watch the input level while speaking. Use the microphone-level control and speak normally. If the level does not respond, the console may not be receiving input from the selected device. If it responds, the microphone is reaching the console, and the issue may instead be related to chat or the game.
- Test another chat context. Try a PS5 party or another available voice-chat context outside the game where the problem occurred. If the microphone works there, investigate that game’s voice-chat configuration rather than resetting the earbuds immediately.
- Update and follow the official reset steps. If the selected microphone, mute state, and input level are correct but the mic still does not work in multiple contexts, check for updates and use Sony’s device-specific reset instructions.
These checks separate three different symptoms: the console not receiving microphone input, the console receiving input that other people do not hear, and a problem limited to one game or chat. If the microphone still fails after the checks and the official reset, contact PlayStation support. Do not assume that buying earbuds or an adapter will fix a game-specific chat setting.
Use the input-level response as a practical dividing line. No response while speaking points back to the selected input, mute state, or connection; a responding level suggests the console is receiving microphone input, so compare another chat context before changing hardware. If the problem is limited to one game, keep the earbud connection checks separate from that game’s voice-chat settings.
Why is sound coming from my TV instead of my earbuds?
Check the PS5 output device and headphones settings first. TV audio usually points to a routing selection or a connection issue worth checking before you conclude that the earbuds have failed.

Open the console’s Sound settings and inspect the selected output device. Confirm that the intended earbuds or PlayStation Link output is selected where available, and check the headphones options. Then verify that the PlayStation Link adapter is attached and connected and that the earbuds themselves are connected and charged. Retest with PS5 audio.
If the console does not show or use the expected output, reconnect the relevant devices using Sony’s current instructions and check for updates. The exact reset or pairing steps depend on the device: do not apply PULSE Explore instructions to an unrelated third-party earbud model. If the output still cannot be selected after those checks, support can help distinguish a console, adapter, or earbud fault.
Changing the selected output is a free check and should come before shopping for another adapter or earbuds. If the PS5 does not offer the expected output, that is a different observation from the console offering it but continuing to send sound to the TV. In either case, confirm the adapter and earbuds are connected, then follow the applicable reconnection instructions before deciding a component needs attention.
When should I update, reset, or contact support?
Update after basic connection and routing checks; reset only by following Sony’s instructions for the exact device; contact PlayStation support when the fault remains after those steps. This order avoids using a reset to address a simple output-selection problem.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Update: Check for available PS5 system software and relevant device updates using Sony’s current guidance. Availability and menu labels may change, so consult the live support instructions rather than relying on a remembered firmware version.
- Reset or reconnect: Use the procedure Sony provides for PULSE Explore and the specific PlayStation Link component involved. Keep the instructions for earbuds and adapter distinct; a procedure for one is not automatically the procedure for the other.
- Contact support: Escalate if dropouts, output failure, or microphone problems remain after charge, connection, routing, signal, update, and applicable reset checks. Support or repair is a more appropriate next step than buying a generic wireless accessory or assuming an unverified hardware diagnosis.
Before contacting support, note which connection was affected, whether the issue appeared on more than one audio source or chat, what changed during the checks, and whether the adapter and earbuds remained connected. That record can help narrow down the fault without treating an unconfirmed cause as established.
Keep the report specific: say whether you tested PS5 sound over PlayStation Link, Bluetooth-source audio, or both; whether the microphone input level moved while speaking; and whether moving closer or changing the output selection changed anything. Include whether the issue persisted after the available updates and the applicable official reset. Those details are more useful than saying only that the earbuds are “broken,” and they help support distinguish a setting, signal, or device issue.
Should I replace an adapter, cable, or ear tips?
Replace an accessory only when the diagnosis points to that accessory or it is missing. A missing or confirmed-faulty PlayStation Link adapter is a reason to consider the exact adapter; intermittent signal alone is not proof that a new one will help.

For PULSE Explore, compatible replacement ear tips may be relevant if a tip is missing or fit is the issue, but they do not address PS5 routing, PlayStation Link dropouts, or a silent microphone. A USB-C data or charging cable is relevant only if the cable you need is missing or defective. Check compatibility for any third-party accessory rather than assuming every ear tip, cable, or wireless adapter fits or works with the earbuds and PS5.
If the device remains faulty after Sony’s checks, compare the cost and suitability of support or repair with replacement before purchasing exact replacement earbuds. A generic Bluetooth USB dongle is not established as a fix for a PULSE Explore PlayStation Link problem, and PC repair software or a streaming subscription does not address the console-side connection or microphone checks described here.
There is no supported price comparison that makes replacement automatically preferable to repair. First match the purchase to the diagnosed need: the exact adapter for one missing or confirmed-faulty adapter, compatible tips for a missing or fit-related tip issue, or a suitable cable only when the needed cable is missing or defective. If the fault is still uncertain, support or repair is a more grounded next step than replacing several accessories at once.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can I tell which connection is causing the problem?
Test PS5 audio over PlayStation Link and Bluetooth-source audio independently. That simple separation is especially useful with PULSE Explore, which can connect to PlayStation Link and Bluetooth simultaneously.
| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| PS5 game audio is affected, but Bluetooth-source audio is not | Check PS5 output routing, the PlayStation Link adapter and earbuds’ connection, distance, interference, and PS5 or device updates. |
| Bluetooth-source audio is affected, but PS5 game audio is not | Investigate that Bluetooth source and its connection separately; do not infer a PlayStation Link fault from this symptom alone. |
| Both sources are affected | Check charge, the earbuds, and the conditions common to both tests, then follow the device-specific update and reset guidance. |
| Game audio works, but friends cannot hear you | Check the selected PS5 microphone, input level, mute state, and whether the issue occurs outside that game’s chat. |
| The TV plays sound instead of the earbuds | Inspect the PS5 output-device and headphones settings, then confirm adapter and earbud connection. |
This is a diagnostic guide, not a guarantee that a specific component has failed. A source-specific symptom narrows what to inspect; it does not by itself prove whether the console, game, adapter, or earbuds are responsible.

Will a Bluetooth USB adapter fix PS5 wireless earbud lag?
The documented PS5 troubleshooting path here is PlayStation Link for PULSE Explore, not a generic Bluetooth USB dongle. Check compatibility and the affected connection before buying an adapter; a generic dongle is not an established remedy for a PlayStation Link fault.
Can I use PULSE Explore reset instructions for other wireless earbuds?
No. Reset and pairing procedures are device-specific, and the supported instructions described here concern PULSE Explore and its PlayStation Link adapter. Use the manufacturer’s guidance for another earbud model.
What should I tell PlayStation support about an earbud problem?
Describe whether the symptom affected PS5 audio over PlayStation Link, Bluetooth audio, microphone input, or more than one of those paths. Also note the connection, routing, distance, update, and reset checks you completed and whether the symptom changed.
Why is my PS5 sound still coming from the TV?
Check the PS5 audio output-device and headphones settings, then confirm the adapter and earbuds are connected and charged. Reconnect using Sony’s instructions for the exact devices if the expected output is not available.
What should I try if my PULSE Explore microphone does not work?
Check the selected PS5 microphone, mute state, and input level while speaking. Test another chat context; if the input level responds but one game’s chat does not, investigate that game’s voice-chat settings before replacing hardware.
Will resetting my earbuds guarantee less audio delay?
No universal latency target or quantified improvement from resetting is established here. Check the affected audio source, PS5 routing, connection, and available updates first, then follow Sony’s exact reset instructions if needed.
The Bottom Line
Separate PS5 PlayStation Link audio from Bluetooth audio, check charge, connection, output routing, and microphone settings, then retest after one change at a time. For dropouts, try a closer position and a less interference-prone setup before considering replacement. Use Sony’s device-specific update, reset, and reconnection instructions; if the problem remains, contact PlayStation support before buying hardware that may not address the cause.
