PS5 voice-chat privacy has several separate controls, not one master switch. Set account privacy to decide who may contact or invite you, use a Closed Party to control who enters the room, mute the DualSense microphone to stop your voice, disable game chat to stay unheard by opponents, and adjust real-name, profile, speaker-display, blocking and broadcast permissions separately. These settings apply to PS5 and PS5 Pro accounts; account privacy changes also follow you to PlayStation.com and the PlayStation App.
Which PS5 setting controls each kind of privacy?
Use the layer that matches the risk you want to remove. A Closed Party limits membership, but it does not mute your microphone. The DualSense mute button stops your voice, but it does not prevent someone from seeing your Online ID. Account privacy controls who can initiate contact, while Personal Info settings control what identifying details accompany your voice.

How do I set PS5 privacy settings for voice chat?

Choose a preset
Sony describes four presets:
- Social and Open: “You’re open to all requests and messages. Any player can see your profile information.” This is the broadest contact and visibility setting.
- Team Player: “Any player can see most of your profile information, and they need to at least be friends of friends to invite you to chat.”
- Friend Focused: “Only your friends can see your profile information and invite you to chat.”
- Solo and Focused: “No player can see your profile information or invite you to chat, even if they are your friend.”
These are four preset privacy profiles documented by Sony PlayStation Support in 2026. For most people who want voice chat with people they know, Friend Focused is the practical starting point; Solo and Focused is the strictest preset.
Change only the communication permission
For a narrower change, go to View and Customize Your Privacy Settings > Communication and multiplayer > Who can interact with you through parties, games, and messages. This is the leaf that determines who can approach you through party, game and message channels. The same section includes who can send friend requests, which players you block and whether crossplay game invitations are allowed.

Under Personal Info | Messaging, Sony labels the relevant choice: “Choose who can see your real name and communicate with you.” Separate groups cover your real name and profile picture, friends and profile editing, online status and activity, gaming history and hidden games.
Use the website or app when the console is unavailable
Account privacy can also be edited in Account Management on PlayStation.com or in the PlayStation App by opening your avatar and selecting Privacy. Sony says privacy settings are tied to your account, so a change is reflected on all devices rather than only the PS5 where you made it.
What changes for a child account?
For a child family member, the family manager and parents or guardians set the privacy profile. A child may be able to change some options depending on parental controls. Sony says the family manager receives a notification when a setting changes, and family managers can review activity in the PlayStation Family app.
How do I stop people joining my PS5 party?
Party type controls who is in the voice room. Press the PS button > Game Base > Parties > Start Party, then choose Open Party or Closed Party. You can also select a friend from the Friends tab and start a party from that profile.
Open Party
In Sony’s wording, “Friends of the owner, as well as friends of party members, can join an open party without an invitation.” The owner can rename the party, invite players and set a member limit. Turn on Require Request to Join when you want an open party’s discoverability but require a request before someone enters.

Closed Party
Sony defines a closed party as “a party that only selected and invited players can join.” This is the strongest control over room membership because friends who were not selected cannot simply enter through the normal friends-of-members route. It still does not mute anyone: once admitted, a member can hear voices that are being transmitted.
Party links need separate caution
On the voice-chat card, choose Share Party Link, scan the QR code and send the link. A recipient can join from the PlayStation App or a PS5. Treat the link as an invitation to anyone who obtains it; sharing it widens the circle beyond the “friends only” intuition of a private group.
Change the party after it starts
The owner can open Voice Chat card > More > Party Settings to change the party type, name, Require Request to Join and member limit. To remove a participant, highlight that player, press Options and select Kick Out. Joinable parties appear under Game Base > Parties > Joinable, while invitations appear as a notification at the top right.

The DualSense controller has a built-in microphone, so a headset is not required. Sony’s support guide says, “Don’t have a headset? No problem, there’s a built-in mic on your DualSense® wireless controller that you can use for voice chat.” Press the dedicated mute button to mute and unmute it; Sony’s troubleshooting guide says the same button controls the controller mic. A sound and on-screen icon confirm the change. The mute button also keeps your voice out of recorded clips.
Start every login muted
For a persistent default, open Control Center > Mic and set Microphone Status When Logged In to Mute. This is the safer choice if you do not want the controller microphone live when a conversation starts. A manual tap may need to be repeated after each power-on unless this persistent setting is enabled.
Use a headset or USB microphone
Configure an alternative input at Settings > Sound > Microphone, where you can choose the Input Device and use Adjust Microphone Level. Sony supports a wireless headset or USB microphone as alternatives. Hideaki Nishino of PlayStation described the controller microphone as suited to “jumping into a quick conversation” and recommended a headset for longer conversations.
What does Mute All do?
On the voice-chat card, choose More > Mute All to mute the party’s voice chat on your end. It changes what you hear; it does not revoke other players’ ability to hear your microphone. Use the controller mute button or the microphone controls when the goal is to stop your voice leaving the room.

Can people hear me in game chat if I am in party chat?
They can, unless you mute the microphone or disable game chat. Mute Game Voice Chat affects only game-chat audio, not the microphone’s general transmission. Sony explicitly says, “This setting affects only game chat audio.” Independent how-to guidance also notes that party chat and Discord voice chat on PS5 can still hear you with this toggle enabled.
- Press the PS button and open Control Center > Sound.
- Turn on Mute Game Voice Chat. The same control is available in Voice Chat Settings in Game Base.
- Remain in the party channel if you want to talk privately with party members. If you need no one to hear you, press the DualSense mute button as well.
Use the voice-chat card’s drop-down to switch between party chat and game chat. Share Screen and Share Play are not compatible with every game’s voice-chat implementation, so a game’s own audio behavior may differ.
How do I mute, block or report someone in PS5 voice chat?
Mute one player
Press the PS button, open the Party Voice Chat card, select the player’s name and choose Mute. Muting an individual changes what you hear from that player without changing the party’s membership.
Block a player
To block from Game Base, open the Friends list, select the player’s Online ID, choose the three-dot menu and select Block. From a party, select the party and player’s Online ID, choose View Profile, then the three-dot menu and Block.
Blocking is broader than muting. Sony’s PS5 video says it prevents the two accounts from viewing each other’s profiles, activities and personal information on PlayStation Network, adding each other to parties or using Share Screen together, seeing each other’s messages when both are in the same messaging group, and hearing each other’s voices when both are in the same party voice chat.
Report abusive voice chat
On the voice-chat card, open More > Report and follow the on-screen reporting flow. Reporting and blocking serve different purposes: reporting sends a moderation complaint, while blocking changes future interaction between the accounts.
Who can see my name while I talk on PS5?
People already in the party can see your Online ID in the member list. Display Who’s Speaking does not create that identity; it adds a local on-screen label for whoever is currently talking. Your real name, profile picture, online status and activity are separate privacy choices.

Turn Display Who’s Speaking on or off
- Join a PlayStation party.
- Open Control Center > Voice Chat, then the three-dot More menu.
- Select Display Who’s Speaking and turn on Display Names. Use Position to move the indicator away from a map or health bar.
- Turn Display Names off when you do not want the speaker indicator on your screen.
Sony documents this for PlayStation party chat. It is not enabled by default and does not apply to in-game voice chat, although games may provide their own speaker displays. Engadget reported that system software version 26.06-14.00.00, publicly released on 16 September 2026, added the feature to the release notes for both PS5 and PS5 Pro. If the option is missing, use Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings > Update System Software. Some players reported seeing it as early as November 2025, but Sony has not explained how that earlier availability was controlled.

This is a viewer-side setting. You cannot remotely stop another party member from turning on Display Names, and you cannot hide your Online ID from people already admitted to the party. To reduce identification, change the real-name and profile-picture permissions under Privacy, choose Friend Focused or Solo and Focused, and restrict who may invite you.
How do I stop my voice appearing in broadcasts and clips?
Open Voice Chat card > More > Voice Chat Settings. Sony describes this menu as the place to adjust microphone level and “allow your voice to be used in other players’ broadcasts and video clips.” Video guides may label the same control Share Your Voice; use the wording shown on your console and choose the restrictive option if you do not consent.
A streamer also has to enable Include Party Audio. From the Create button, choose Broadcast > Broadcast Options > Audio, or open Settings > Captures and Broadcasts > Broadcasts > Audio. Each friend must separately allow their voice to be shared, so a streamer cannot override a participant’s refusal.
How does Discord differ from PS5 party chat?
On PS5, link the account through Game Base > Discord > Link Account, then use Direct Voice Chats. Audio uses the DualSense microphone or a connected headset. Discord has its own privacy and membership controls outside Sony’s PS5 party presets. The DualSense mute button still applies, but Mute Game Voice Chat does not mute Discord.

Keep these features separate from the party mute steps:
- Screen Reader: Settings > Accessibility > Screen Reader reads menus; it does not read party members.
- Voice Command (Preview): Settings > Voice Command (Preview) uses the “Hey PlayStation” wake phrase. Sony’s default stops listening after four seconds of inactivity. The preview is limited to United States and United Kingdom English. Gamers Suffice, citing Sony, reported that voice data may include human review of written transcripts unless you select Don’t Allow at Settings > Users and Accounts > Privacy > Voice Data Collection; this is Voice Command privacy, not a party-chat switch.
- Chat Transcription: Settings > Accessibility > Chat Transcription, also available from the party’s More menu, converts other players’ voices in parties and supported games to text and can read text you enter aloud to other players.
