If PS5 voice chat works but you cannot see who is speaking, first enable the party voice-chat display control. Press the PS button, open Game Base, select the party, open its voice-chat card, and turn on Display Names (also shown in some software as Display Who’s Speaking). Use Position if the active-speaker indicator is appearing somewhere you are not looking. If that does not help, confirm that you are in PS5 party chat rather than a game’s own voice chat or Discord, then check mute state, chat balance, audio routing, microphone input, volume and—only when connection symptoms exist—your network.

How do I turn on speaker names in PS5 party chat?

The Display Names control is the direct setting for showing active-speaker names in PS5 party voice chat. The wording can appear as Display Names or Display Who’s Speaking, depending on the system-software interface. Sony describes this option as showing the names of active speakers while chatting.

  1. Press the PS button on the DualSense controller to open the Control Center.
  2. Select Game Base.
  3. Open the party in which you are currently chatting. Do not open a different party card or a game-chat card by mistake.
  4. Open that party’s voice-chat card.
  5. Turn on Display Names or Display Who’s Speaking.
  6. Open Position and choose a location for the active-speaker indicator if it may be hidden behind another on-screen element.
  7. Ask another participant to speak while you watch the game or home screen. The names should appear for active speakers in that party voice-chat session.

The Position control matters when the feature is enabled but the label seems absent. Sony says Position determines where the active-speaker indicator appears on screen. Try a different corner or edge, especially if a game HUD, streaming overlay or notification could cover the original location.

This control affects the on-screen indicator. It is separate from whether the console can send or receive audio, so a missing name label and a silent microphone can have different causes. If you can hear the party normally and only the labels are missing, return to this setting before changing hardware.

Am I checking the right kind of voice chat?

PS5 party chat, a game’s built-in voice chat, Discord voice chat and the PlayStation App are separate experiences. A setting changed in the PS5 party voice-chat card should not be expected to add speaker names to a game’s own interface or to Discord.

PS5 party chat

Use the Game Base party card for the Display Names control. This is the context covered by Sony’s party-chat instructions, and it is the correct place to troubleshoot the system-level active-speaker indicator. Test it from the PS5 home screen if you want to remove a game’s own HUD from the diagnosis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In-game voice chat

Many games draw their own player list or speaker indicator. If names are missing only inside one game while the PS5 party card behaves normally, inspect that game’s voice-chat and HUD options, if available. The PS5 Display Names switch does not control a game’s separate interface. Some games also hide player names when their voice channel is disabled, when a scoreboard is closed or when privacy controls limit the list; those choices belong to the game rather than Game Base.

Discord voice chat

Discord has its own voice-chat card and member display on PS5. Open the Discord card rather than the PS5 party card when checking a Discord call; changing the party-chat Display Names option does not configure Discord’s interface. Leave Discord and join a regular PS5 party for a clean comparison.

PlayStation App

The PlayStation App is another distinct chat experience. Test the names in the same service in which the conversation is taking place so that a correctly configured PS5 party is not mistaken for a failed game, Discord or mobile-app display.

How do I check mute and party/game-chat priority?

A muted party or an incorrect chat balance can make the voice session appear broken even when the speaker-name option is enabled.

  1. Press the PS button and open Game Base.
  2. Select the active party and open its voice-chat card.
  3. Make sure Mute All is not enabled. If everyone is muted, there may be no active speech for the indicator to identify.
  4. Check whether the conversation is set to party chat or game chat. Switch to the intended type when the wrong channel is selected.
  5. Adjust the party/game-chat balance so the selected voice channel is not effectively turned down against other console audio.
  6. Have one participant speak again while you watch the indicator.

Party/game-chat priority is a routing choice, not a replacement for Display Names. You can hear people and still have the label hidden, or have the label enabled while a mute or balance setting prevents useful voice audio. Check both ends of the conversation: ask another member whether they can hear you, and ask them to speak while you watch for their name.

Which PS5 audio-output settings should I verify?

Check the output device before assuming that the chat service or the speaker-name display has failed. Go to Settings > Sound > Audio Output and review the device selected under Output Device.

Output Device

Confirm that the selected device is the one you are actually using: a TV or HDMI display, the controller speaker, a headset or another connected output. If a headset is connected but the console is still sending sound elsewhere, the chat may seem silent even though the party is active. Disconnect unused USB or wireless audio devices temporarily so the selected route is unambiguous.

Output to Headphones

When headphones are attached, inspect Output to Headphones and choose what should be routed through them. A mismatch here can send voice chat to the wrong path or leave other audio audible while voices are not. After changing it, speak with another participant and test both game audio and chat audio rather than relying on one sound.

Volume

Open Settings > Sound > Volume and check the relevant headphone and controller-speaker levels. Also check the physical or inline volume control on a connected headset. A low controller-speaker level can be mistaken for a party failure when the TV or headset is not the active output.

The DualSense mute button can mute the microphone and the controller speakers together. Press it again to restore the previous state when the button indicates that muting is active. This does not toggle Display Names; it only changes the audio and microphone state. If the button has been pressed accidentally, restore it before testing the party again.

How do I check the microphone input and level?

If other participants cannot hear you, or the active-speaker indicator never activates for your speech, verify the input path separately from output.

  1. From the Control Center, select Mic, or open Settings > Sound > Microphone.
  2. Review Input Device and select the microphone you intend to use.
  3. Check that the microphone is not muted on the controller, headset or console.
  4. Open Adjust Microphone Level and speak at your normal volume.
  5. Move the level until your voice reaches Sony’s documented Good range without clipping into the excessive-input area.
  6. Return to the party and ask another member whether your speech is audible.

A correct microphone level can restore your ability to become an active speaker, but it does not turn the name display on by itself. Keep the input check and the Display Names check as separate steps. If another participant’s name appears but yours never does, concentrate on Input Device, mute and level. If nobody’s name appears, concentrate first on Display Names, Position and chat context.

What does each symptom usually point to?

Use the symptom pattern to choose the shortest next check instead of changing every setting at once.

You see no names after switching from game chat to a party Chat selection Reopen the intended party voice-chat card and confirm that the conversation is not still using game chat.

When should I troubleshoot the network?

Network work is conditional. Use it when the microphone icon flashes, party voice chat loses connection or participants repeatedly drop out—not as the first response to a hidden speaker-name label in an otherwise stable party.

  1. Check the console’s internet connection and confirm that the problem is not limited to one participant.
  2. If possible, use a wired network connection while diagnosing instability.
  3. Turn off the PS5 and the network device, such as the router or modem, and leave both powered down for five minutes.
  4. Restart the network device, wait for it to reconnect, then start the PS5 and rejoin the party.
  5. Retest the microphone icon and party connection before changing router settings.

Sony’s US support guidance lists these ports for router troubleshooting: TCP 80, 443, 3478, 3479 and 3480; UDP 3478, 3479 and 49152–65535. Port changes can affect the whole home network, so consult your internet service provider before editing firewall or forwarding rules. Port work cannot substitute for enabling Display Names when the connection itself is stable.

Do not infer a network fault solely from a missing label. A stable conversation with audible participants points back to the display control or chat context. Conversely, a flashing microphone icon and repeated disconnections justify connection checks even if Display Names is already on.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a PS5 headset help isolate the problem?

A known-compatible headset can isolate a controller, headset or output route, but buying one does not restore a missing Display Names control. Treat hardware as a secondary diagnostic step after the software and chat-context checks.

Use an existing headset first

If you already have a compatible wired or wireless headset, connect it, select it under Settings > Sound > Audio Output > Output Device, and repeat the microphone and volume checks. If voices and your microphone work through the headset but not through the previous path, the original controller, speaker, cable or output selection becomes the likely isolation target.

Test one path at a time. Do not leave the TV, controller speaker and headset all competing for attention while diagnosing; verify which device appears as Output Device and which microphone appears as Input Device. This comparison tells you whether the fault follows the console chat session or one physical route.

Replacement option

The PlayStation PULSE 3D Wireless Headset is a PS5-compatible audio accessory documented for PS5 setup. It can provide a separate input-and-output path when you need to determine whether the current hardware is involved. Even with a working headset, the party voice-chat card must still have Display Names enabled for names to appear. A headset is therefore an isolation or replacement option, not a fix for a hidden software control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if the indicator is still missing?

If the correct PS5 party is open, Display Names is enabled, Position is visible, mute and chat priority are correct, and audio input/output checks pass, restart the party and the console before escalating.

  1. Leave the current party and create or join it again.
  2. Restart the PS5 from the power menu rather than only closing the game.
  3. Reopen Game Base, select the party’s voice-chat card and verify Display Names once more.
  4. Test with a participant speaking in the PS5 party, not in a game’s separate channel or Discord.
  5. If the indicator remains absent, contact current PlayStation Support and describe it as a possible software or user-interface failure.

Give support the chat type you used, whether Display Names was enabled, where Position was set, the selected output and input devices, mute and volume status, and whether the microphone icon flashed or the party disconnected. This separates a display defect from an audio-route or connection problem. Menu labels and accessory behavior can change with PS5 system software, so quote the wording currently shown on your console.

Before contacting support, note whether the issue affects every party or only one party, whether another participant can see the indicator, and whether the indicator returns after leaving and rejoining. These observations do not prove a cause, but they make the report more precise without requiring a purchase or router change.

What should I avoid doing?

  • Do not change router ports when the only symptom is a missing name label in a stable party.
  • Do not assume a headset purchase will enable Display Names.
  • Do not test a PS5 party setting inside Discord or a game’s own voice interface and call the setting ineffective.
  • Do not change microphone level and output routing at the same time if you need to identify which path fixed the audio.
  • Do not treat the DualSense mute button as a speaker-name control; it affects microphone and controller-speaker audio.
  • Do not assume the indicator is gone until you check Position and test with an active speaker.

What should I remember before changing settings?

  • Start with Display Names in the PS5 party voice-chat card.
  • Use Position if the active-speaker indicator may be hidden or covered.
  • Keep PS5 party chat, in-game chat, Discord and the PlayStation App separate while testing.
  • Check mute, party/game-chat balance, output device, headphone routing, microphone input, level and volume independently.
  • Use network steps only for flashing microphone icons or disconnections.
  • Use a compatible headset to isolate hardware, not as a substitute for the display setting.
  • Escalate after a party restart and console restart if the configured indicator still does not appear.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an official failure-rate statistic for missing PS5 speaker names?

No relevant published failure-rate percentage is provided in Sony’s party-chat documentation. That means a cause should not be labeled the most common without evidence; use the symptom-based checks instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a PS5 system update change the wording of the speaker-name option?

Yes, menu labels and support-page wording can change as PS5 system software is revised. Look for the equivalent Display Names or Display Who’s Speaking control in the party voice-chat card if the exact wording differs.

What details should I give PlayStation Support about this problem?

Report whether the conversation was PS5 party chat, in-game chat or Discord; whether Display Names was enabled; and which output and input devices were selected. Also note mute and volume status, microphone-level behavior, Position, and any flashing microphone icon or disconnection.

Why can I hear people but still not see their names?

Hearing voices confirms that some audio is arriving, but it does not enable the on-screen indicator. Open the PS5 party voice-chat card, turn on Display Names or Display Who’s Speaking, and check Position. If the conversation is in a game or Discord, use that service’s own display controls.

Why does my name not appear when I speak?

Check that the intended microphone is selected under Input Device, that the controller or headset is not muted, and that Adjust Microphone Level reaches the Good range. Then confirm Display Names is enabled in the same PS5 party.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does changing Output to Headphones fix missing speaker names?

It can fix voices being sent to the wrong audio path, but it does not control the name indicator. Verify Output Device and Output to Headphones for an audio problem, then separately enable Display Names.

Should I forward PlayStation ports for this issue?

Only when the microphone icon flashes, party chat disconnects or participants repeatedly drop out. For those symptoms, Sony lists TCP 80, 443, 3478, 3479 and 3480, plus UDP 3478, 3479 and 49152–65535. Ask your internet service provider before changing router rules.

Will buying a PS5 headset restore the speaker-name display?

No. A compatible headset, including the PlayStation PULSE 3D Wireless Headset, can isolate a controller, microphone or output-route problem. Display Names still has to be enabled in the PS5 party voice-chat card.

Why is the indicator visible in a party but not in one game?

The game may use its own voice-chat interface. PS5 party Display Names applies to the system party card, not a game’s separate HUD or player list. Check the game’s voice-chat and HUD settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if Display Names is enabled but the indicator remains absent everywhere?

Confirm Position, leave and rejoin the party, restart the PS5, and test with another participant speaking in a regular PS5 party. If it still fails with audio and connection checks passing, contact current PlayStation Support as a possible software or user-interface issue.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: In a PS5 party, open Game Base’s voice-chat card and enable Display Names (or Display Who’s Speaking), then check Position. Keep party, game and Discord chat separate; verify mute, balance, output, microphone and volume settings; and reserve network troubleshooting for flashing microphone icons or disconnections. A compatible headset can isolate hardware, but it cannot replace the display setting.
