When your PS5 is low on space, start with the free cleanup tools before buying hardware: open Settings > Storage, sort out the largest games and media, delete installations you are not using, and choose Customize to remove optional add-ons when a game offers that control. A purchased digital game is not permanently lost when its local installation is deleted; Sony says it can be downloaded again from your game library. If you need an archive, USB extended storage is inexpensive and supports direct play for PS4 games, but PS5 games must be copied back before they can run. For a PS5 library that stays playable on added storage, install a compatible internal M.2 SSD.
How do I free up space on my PS5 without buying storage?
Use the PS5’s storage categories first. This shows whether games, applications, screenshots, video clips or saved data are consuming the available capacity, so you can solve the actual problem rather than buying an expansion drive unnecessarily.

Delete completed single-player games, inactive multiplayer titles and duplicate applications first. Keep the games you play regularly on the fastest storage, and treat rarely used titles as an archive. The Customize menu is not identical for every game, so do not assume that a particular add-on can always be removed separately.
Can I redownload a PS5 game after deleting it?
Yes. Deleting a local installation removes the files from the console, not your entitlement to a purchased digital game. Sony’s support guidance says you can re-download deleted purchases from your game library whenever you like.

For a disc-based game, keep the disc. Reinstalling the data does not remove the requirement to insert the disc when you launch the game again. Redownloading also requires enough free space for the installation and any updates, plus an internet connection capable of transferring the files in a reasonable time.
Will deleting a game delete my saved data?
Game installations and saved data are separate storage categories. Before deleting anything, open the saved-data controls under Settings and verify that you are removing the installation rather than the save files.
PlayStation Plus members can upload PS5 and PS4 saved data to cloud storage. Sony advertises 100 GB of cloud storage for PlayStation Plus on its current US storage-solutions page. Cloud storage protects progress and helps with migration, but it is not a place to install or play games.
PS4 saved data can also be copied to a USB drive. Sony says PS5 saved data cannot be copied from the console to a USB drive, so use cloud storage or the console-to-console transfer process for PS5 saves. If a game has its own account-based progression, check that game’s instructions as well; an installation deletion does not guarantee that every type of online or local data is handled identically.
Which storage option is right for a limited PS5?
Choose based on whether you need an archive or games that remain playable without a transfer. Capacity alone is not enough: a large USB drive and an internal M.2 SSD provide different day-to-day experiences.
| Option | Best for | Play PS5 games directly? | Play PS4 games directly? | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Delete and redownload | Occasional games and zero-cost cleanup | Yes, after reinstalling | Yes, after reinstalling | Uses download time and requires internet access |
| USB extended storage | Large archive and a PS4 library | No; copy to console or M.2 storage first | Yes | Simple expansion, but PS5 games need a transfer before play |
| Internal M.2 SSD | PS5 games that should stay installed and playable | Yes | Yes | Costs more and requires compatibility checks and installation |
| PlayStation App | Remote downloads and deletion | Depends on the selected console destination | Depends on the selected console destination | Cannot move or copy games |
| PlayStation Plus cloud storage | Saved-data protection and migration | No; it stores saves, not installations | No; it stores saves, not installations | Requires PlayStation Plus |
Use deletion and redownloading when you play a title only occasionally. Choose USB extended storage when the priority is keeping a large library available without opening the console, especially if you play many PS4 games. Choose an M.2 SSD when you want PS5 games to download, update and launch from the added drive. The PlayStation App and cloud storage solve remote-management and save-protection problems rather than replacing either type of game storage.

How do I use a USB drive as PS5 extended storage?
USB extended storage is the lower-friction expansion method, but it has a decisive limitation: PS5 games cannot be played directly from it. You can store PS5 game files there and copy them back to console storage or an internal M.2 SSD when you want to play. PS4 games can be installed to and played directly from the USB drive.
Check the USB requirements
- Use a SuperSpeed USB drive rated at 5 Gbps or faster.
- Capacity must be at least 250 GB and no more than 8 TB.
- Connect it directly to the PS5 rather than through a USB hub.
- Only one USB extended-storage drive can be used at a time.
These requirements describe the storage device, not a promise that every model or enclosure will behave identically. Check the drive’s interface rating and capacity before formatting it for the console.
Format and move games
- Connect the compatible drive directly to the PS5.
- Open Settings > Storage > USB Extended Storage and follow the on-screen formatting prompt. Formatting erases the drive.
- To move an installed title, open Game Library, highlight the game, press the Options button, choose Move Games and Apps, select the USB extended-storage destination, and confirm.
- To play a PS5 title stored on USB, return to Move Games and Apps and copy it to Console Storage or M.2 storage. Launch it after the transfer completes.
Do not disconnect the drive while it is formatting or transferring. Sony warns that interrupting formatting or removing the drive improperly can cause data loss, corruption or damage. To disconnect it safely, open Settings > Storage > USB Extended Storage > Safely Remove from PS5, wait for the confirmation, and then unplug it.
What should I expect when using USB for PS4 games?
PS4 games can remain installed on USB extended storage and launch from there, which makes the drive useful for a backward-compatible library. A PS5 version of the same title follows the PS5 rule: it must be on Console Storage or a compatible M.2 SSD to run.
How do I install an M.2 SSD for playable PS5 expansion?
An internal M.2 SSD is the correct choice when you want PS5 games to remain on the added drive and launch without being copied back. Compatibility and physical fit matter more than the product’s advertised capacity alone.
Verify the current compatibility requirements
- PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe interface.
- Capacity between 250 GB and 8 TB.
- Supported form factors: 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 or 22110.
- Effective heat dissipation, normally through a heatsink that fits within Sony’s specified height and width limits.
- Sequential read speed of at least 5,500 MB/s is Sony’s recommendation.
M.2 SATA SSDs are not supported. A drive can have the right capacity and still be unsuitable if its interface, dimensions or heatsink do not match the console. Check the SSD and heatsink measurements against the current PS5 hardware guidance before purchase; do not assume that a marketplace listing marked “PS5 compatible” is sufficient proof.

Install and format the drive
- Turn off the PS5 completely, unplug it and allow it to cool before opening the expansion bay.
- Install the compatible M.2 SSD in the console’s expansion slot, securing it at the supported length and fitting the cover correctly.
- Reconnect the console and start it. The PS5 will prompt you to format the new drive; formatting erases anything on the SSD.
- Follow the prompt and let the console complete the speed check before using the drive.
Follow the hardware-specific installation instructions for your PS5 model and the SSD manufacturer. If the cover cannot close or the heatsink does not sit flat, stop rather than forcing it; an incorrect physical fit can prevent proper installation and heat dissipation.
Set downloads and updates to the M.2 SSD
- Open Settings > Storage > Installation Location.
- Choose M.2 storage as the destination for PS5 games, PS4 games or both categories as applicable.
- Start a new download from the PlayStation Store or your game library. The selected installation location receives the game.
Sony says PS5 games can be downloaded, copied, updated and played on M.2 storage. All data for a specific game must stay in one storage location; the installation cannot be split between Console Storage and M.2 storage.

- Open Game Library.
- Highlight the game and press Options.
- Select Move Games and Apps.
- Choose the M.2 SSD destination and confirm.
The same menu lets you move a title back to Console Storage when necessary. Moving changes where the installed files live; it does not create a second copy or remove your purchase entitlement.
How do I download PS5 games directly to expansion storage?
Direct downloads are supported when the destination is an installed, compatible M.2 SSD. USB extended storage can hold PS5 games after a move, but it is not a direct-play destination.
- For an M.2 SSD, open Settings > Storage > Installation Location and select the M.2 destination.
- For USB storage, install or download the game normally to Console Storage, then use Game Library > Options > Move Games and Apps to copy it to USB after the installation is available.
- Before starting a large download, check the free space on the selected destination and leave room for updates.
If a download fails for lack of space, deleting an inactive installation or removing optional content through Customize may be faster than moving several large games. Remember that cloud saves do not create room for game installations.
How can I manage PS5 storage from the PlayStation App?
PlayStation App can show available space on the PS5 and connected USB extended storage, delete games and remotely download purchased games. It can also download to an M.2 SSD when that SSD is set as the console’s default installation location.

- Pair the app with the intended PS5 and sign in to the account that owns the games.
- Put the console in rest mode and enable Stay Connected to the Internet in the PS5’s rest-mode settings.
- Use the app’s storage view to check available capacity and remove games you no longer need.
- Start a purchase or library download and confirm the destination shown by the app.
If the destination does not have enough room, the app can prompt you to delete games. Sony states that moving and copying games are not supported in PlayStation App, so use the console’s Move Games and Apps command for transfers between Console Storage, USB and M.2 storage.
How do I move a PS5 game library to another console?
Sony supports copying data from a PS4 or another PS5 to a destination PS5. A USB extended-storage drive can be connected to the new console, and an M.2 SSD can be removed from the source PS5 and installed in the destination PS5, subject to the account and installation requirements for the receiving console.
For a console-to-console move, place both systems on the same network, sign in with the relevant account and follow the destination PS5’s data-transfer prompts. Keep the source console powered until the transfer finishes. If you use an M.2 SSD instead, shut down both systems before moving the drive and verify that the destination console supports the same installation procedure.
Moving installed games does not replace saved-data planning. Upload PS5 and PS4 saves to PlayStation Plus cloud storage when available, and use the supported PS4 USB-save method for PS4 progress that you are not transferring through the console migration process.

What are the common PS5 storage mistakes?
- Buying a USB drive expecting PS5 direct play: USB extended storage archives PS5 games, but they must be copied to Console Storage or M.2 storage before launch.
- Choosing an M.2 SSD by capacity alone: Interface, form factor, read speed and heatsink dimensions all have to meet Sony’s requirements.
- Deleting saves instead of installations: Review the saved-data category separately, and use cloud storage when you need a protected copy.
- Assuming every game supports selective deletion: Use Customize only when the title provides it.
- Disconnecting USB storage without ejecting: Use Safely Remove from PS5 first to reduce the risk of corruption.
- Leaving the console offline for remote downloads: The PlayStation App requires rest mode and Stay Connected to the Internet.
- Splitting one game’s files across drives: Keep all data for that game in the same storage location.
What is the simplest storage plan for most PS5 owners?
Use this order when space is tight:
- Inspect Settings > Storage and remove finished or inactive installations.
- Use Customize to remove optional content when the game supports it.
- Protect saved data separately with PlayStation Plus cloud storage or the supported transfer method.
- Choose USB extended storage if you mainly need an archive or play many PS4 games.
- Choose a compatible M.2 SSD if you want PS5 games to download, update and launch from added storage.
- Set the installation location before starting large downloads, and safely eject USB storage before disconnecting it.
This sequence avoids paying for capacity you may not need and makes the playability difference clear before you buy: USB is an archive and PS4-play solution, while M.2 is the internal expansion route for an always-playable PS5 library.
Frequently asked questions
Does putting a PS5 in rest mode make downloads continue?

Can I use a USB extended-storage drive for screenshots and video clips?
The PS5 storage screen reports media separately from games and applications, so check the media category before moving game files. The USB extended-storage rules described by Sony are for game installation and storage; do not assume that every media-management action uses the same workflow.
What happens if an M.2 SSD has no heatsink?
Sony requires effective heat dissipation for an M.2 drive. Use a compatible heatsink that fits the console’s physical limits, and verify the complete assembled height and width before installation rather than adding a part that prevents the expansion-bay cover from closing.
Can cloud storage replace an expansion SSD?
No. PlayStation Plus cloud storage protects saved data, while an SSD or USB drive stores installed game files. Cloud saves can help you recover progress after reinstalling a deleted game, but they cannot launch the game or reduce the installation space it needs.
