An 825GB PS5 usually gives you about 667.2GB of usable space; a 1TB PS5 Slim about 848GB; and a 2TB PS5 Pro about 1.89TB. Those are measured estimates, not figures Sony guarantees for every console. The actual available space depends on the model and can vary with system software and other options, so check the storage-management screen on your own PS5 for its current figure.
How much usable storage does each PS5 have?
The useful number for games and other content is smaller than the advertised SSD capacity because the console reserves space for system functions. Asurion’s 2026 figures put the common usable amounts at about 667.2GB for the original 825GB models, roughly 848GB for 1TB Slim models, and about 1.89TB for the 2TB Pro.

| PS5 model | Advertised internal SSD | Approximate usable storage |
|---|---|---|
| Original PS5 and original PS5 Digital Edition | 825GB | About 667.2GB |
| PS5 Slim, 1TB models | 1TB | About 848GB |
| PS5 Pro | 2TB | About 1.89TB |
| Current US PS5 Digital Edition listing | 825GB | Use the 825GB tier as a guide; check the console’s storage screen |
The capacity figures in the first column describe the SSD size Sony advertises. The usable figures are estimates reported by Asurion in 2026, not Sony’s promised free-space amounts. Sony’s US product information lists both a 1TB PS5 console and an 825GB PS5 Digital Edition, so “Digital Edition” alone does not tell you which usable-space estimate applies.
In practical terms, the original 825GB machine gives you just under two-thirds of its advertised number for user content. The 1TB Slim gives you somewhat more headroom, while the 2TB Pro starts with nearly three times the commonly measured free space of the original 825GB tier. Those comparisons are useful when choosing between models, but they should not replace the storage display on an individual console.

Why does an 825GB PS5 show only about 667GB?
The difference is expected: the advertised capacity includes SSD space that is not available for games and personal content. Sony’s PS5 manual explains that a portion of the SSD is reserved for “console administration, maintenance and additional options.”
Sony also notes that available SSD capacity may vary according to the console, system software version, and available options. The 667.2GB figure is therefore a common measured amount for the 825GB tier, not a fixed amount guaranteed on every unit. A console with a different model, software version, or installed content may show a different amount.

Sony’s manuals calculate SSD capacity using base-10 mathematics, before accounting for reserved system space. That advertised number should not be read as a promise that the same number of gigabytes will appear as free space for games.
This explains why the box and the settings screen appear to disagree. The box identifies the total physical SSD tier, while the console reports the portion that remains available after system administration and other reserved functions are accounted for. Neither number is necessarily wrong; they answer different questions.
How do I check the storage on my own PS5?
Use the storage-management screen on the console rather than relying on a model-wide estimate. It shows the available space on that particular unit and accounts for its installed games, captures, bundled content, and other data.
- Open the PS5’s storage-management screen from the console settings.
- Look at the console storage summary to see the capacity and space currently available.
- Review the categories and installed content if the free-space amount is lower than expected.
- If you are checking a recently purchased or second-hand console, confirm its exact model as well as the displayed storage. Use the screen’s figure for that unit rather than assuming all digital or Slim models have the same SSD size.
The displayed free space is a snapshot, not a permanent hardware specification. Installing or removing a game, app, or media file changes the amount available, while Sony’s stated variation by system software and options is another reason published estimates should remain approximate.

Does PS5 storage capacity depend on whether the console is digital?
Not reliably. The current Sony US listings include an 825GB PS5 Digital Edition as well as a 1TB PS5 console, so the word “Digital” is not enough to determine the storage tier.
Identify the model and check its storage screen before estimating how much room it has. The original PS5 and original Digital Edition belong to the 825GB tier; the Slim estimate applies to 1TB Slim models. Do not transfer the 1TB Slim figure to every digital console just because it lacks a disc drive.
A disc drive is a feature distinction, not a dependable storage-capacity label. Two consoles that are both described as digital can belong to different model families, and the same broad product name can cover different revisions. Confirm the advertised SSD size and then verify the actual storage summary.

The usable estimate is the pool available for games, apps, captures, and other stored content—not an amount reserved exclusively for games. The console’s storage summary reflects the space occupied by existing content, so a newly set-up console and one containing bundled software or installed games will not necessarily show the same free-space number.
For example, the general estimate for a 1TB Slim is about 848GB, while some measurements show about 842.2GB free after accounting for bundled software. These figures describe different conditions, not a contradiction in Sony’s advertised capacity: the amount available to install additional content depends on what is already on the console.
When planning what to keep installed, use the free-space figure shown on your own system and check it again after adding or removing content. Model estimates are useful for setting expectations, but they cannot tell you how much room remains after your particular library and media are accounted for.
The same principle applies to the 825GB and 2TB tiers. About 667.2GB and 1.89TB are useful starting points for comparison, but captures, applications, bundled items and installed games reduce the amount available for the next download. If a measurement seems slightly lower than a published estimate, first check the content categories before assuming the SSD is defective.

How should you compare the three storage tiers?
Compare both the advertised capacity and the practical capacity. The original models advertise 825GB and commonly leave about 667.2GB. The 1TB Slim models advertise 1TB and generally leave about 848GB, although a measurement after bundled software may be closer to 842.2GB. The Pro advertises 2TB and commonly leaves about 1.89TB.
Also compare revision certainty. Sony’s current US information includes a 1TB PS5 console and an 825GB Digital Edition, so a product page that says only “PS5” or “Digital Edition” may not provide enough information for a storage calculation. Confirm the exact model family, advertised SSD size and the storage screen.
Finally, compare expansion options. All three tiers can be supplemented with a compatible internal M.2 SSD, while USB extended storage has a more limited role for PS5 games. A larger built-in drive reduces the need to move games, but it does not eliminate Sony’s reserved system space or the need to check the console’s current free-space display.
What can I do when the internal storage is full?
If you need more space for games you want to launch directly, Sony supports adding a compatible internal M.2 SSD. A USB extended-storage drive is useful for a different purpose: it can hold PS5 games for later transfer and can run compatible PS4 games directly.
Add an internal M.2 SSD for playable PS5 games
Sony says compatible M.2 storage can be used to download, copy, launch, store, and manage PS5 games, PS4 games, and media apps. The drive must meet Sony’s compatibility requirements; a generic NVMe SSD is not automatically suitable.
- Interface: PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe.
- Capacity: 250GB to 8TB.
- Sequential read speed: at least 5,500MB/s recommended by Sony.
- Cooling: effective heat dissipation is required.
A 2TB PS5-compatible M.2 NVMe SSD with a heatsink is a practical capacity category to consider because it adds substantial room without changing the console’s built-in drive. However, capacity alone does not establish compatibility. Check the interface, supported capacity range, sequential read speed and cooling arrangement for the exact product.
Do not treat a generic M.2 drive as suitable merely because it is an NVMe model or because its capacity matches the console. A drive outside Sony’s interface, speed, capacity or heat-dissipation guidance should not be treated as a supported PS5 upgrade.

Use USB extended storage for archiving or compatible PS4 games
A USB extended-storage drive does not behave like additional internal PS5 game storage. PS5 games can be stored on USB, but they must be moved back to the console’s internal storage or an installed M.2 SSD before they can be played. Compatible PS4 games can be played directly from USB extended storage.
That distinction matters when choosing where to put a library. USB storage can help preserve installed PS5 games without using the console’s internal space, but it is not a full replacement for internal storage if you want to launch those PS5 games without moving them back first. It is therefore best viewed as an archive and transfer destination for PS5 titles, or as playable extended storage for compatible PS4 titles.
Which storage figure should I use when planning an upgrade?
Start with the console’s own free-space display, then use the model estimate to understand its original storage tier. If the goal is to play more PS5 games without repeatedly moving them between drives, an internal M.2 SSD is the supported expansion route; if the goal is to keep games archived or play compatible PS4 titles, USB extended storage may fit better.
Before buying an internal drive, verify Sony’s compatibility requirements against the specific product’s specifications. The usable figures—about 667.2GB, 848GB, and 1.89TB—are useful planning estimates for the 825GB, 1TB, and 2TB tiers respectively, but your console’s storage screen is the relevant reference for its current free space.
Use the model estimate to set expectations, not to calculate an exact install budget. A console that has already received games, captures, apps or bundled content will have less room than a newly configured unit. Recheck the storage summary after deleting, moving or installing content, and distinguish between space that is playable immediately and space that is merely archived on USB.

Common storage mistakes to avoid
- Applying the 667.2GB figure to every PS5, including 1TB Slim and 2TB Pro models.
- Assuming every digital console has 1TB because it has no disc drive.
- Treating advertised decimal capacity as free space for games.
- Presenting measured usable figures as permanent Sony guarantees.
- Buying an M.2 SSD without checking PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe support, the 250GB–8TB range, the 5,500MB/s recommended read speed and effective heat dissipation.
- Calling a USB drive a complete replacement for internal PS5 storage when PS5 games stored there must be copied back before play.
Bottom line
An original 825GB PS5 generally leaves about 667.2GB usable, a 1TB PS5 Slim roughly 848GB, and a 2TB PS5 Pro about 1.89TB. Sony reserves part of every SSD for administration, maintenance and additional options, and availability can vary with the console, system software and options. Check your own storage-management screen, identify the exact model, and choose an internal M.2 SSD or USB extended storage according to whether you need to play PS5 games directly or simply store them.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the PS5’s advertised SSD capacity measured in decimal gigabytes?
Yes. Sony’s manuals use base-10 capacity calculations, so the advertised figure is nominal SSD capacity rather than a promise of the same amount of free space for content.

Why might a 1TB PS5 Slim show less free space than about 848GB?
The roughly 848GB estimate is a general storage-menu figure. Some measurements report about 842.2GB free after bundled software is accounted for, and other installed content also affects the remaining space.
Can I play a PS5 game directly from a USB extended-storage drive?
No. A PS5 game stored on USB extended storage has to be moved back to console storage or an internal M.2 SSD to play; compatible PS4 games can be played from USB.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow much usable storage does the original PS5 Digital Edition have?
It belongs to the original 825GB tier, which commonly leaves about 667.2GB usable. Confirm the exact console and check its storage-management screen because availability can vary.
How much usable storage does the PS5 Pro have?
The PS5 Pro advertises a 2TB SSD and commonly provides about 1.89TB usable. That is a measured estimate rather than a universal Sony-guaranteed free-space figure.
Does a digital PS5 always have 1TB of storage?
No. Sony’s current US listings include an 825GB PS5 Digital Edition as well as a 1TB PS5 console. Identify the model instead of using the disc-drive distinction as a storage guide.
What kind of M.2 SSD works in a PS5?
Sony supports PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe drives from 250GB to 8TB, recommends at least 5,500MB/s sequential read speed, and requires effective heat dissipation. Verify every requirement for the specific drive.
Why does Sony reserve PS5 SSD space?
Sony says a portion is reserved for console administration, maintenance and additional options. The amount available can also vary with the console, system software version and available options.
Should I use an M.2 SSD or USB extended storage?
Use a compatible internal M.2 SSD when you want to download, launch and manage PS5 games directly. Use USB extended storage for archiving PS5 games or playing compatible PS4 games directly from the USB drive.
The Bottom Line
An 825GB PS5 generally leaves about 667.2GB usable, a 1TB Slim about 848GB and a 2TB Pro about 1.89TB. Check your console’s storage screen for the definitive current figure, and use a compatible internal M.2 SSD when you need directly playable PS5 storage.
