No: original PS1 memory-card saves and original DualShock controllers are not supported by the PS5 Star Wars Classics conversions. These are separate digital PS4/PS5 editions, not the original games running from discs or vintage accessories. Use a DualSense controller and save through the game’s modern quick-save feature or its console save data instead. Sony’s PlayStation Store listings for the PS1 conversions explicitly say they do not support original PlayStation peripherals.
What are the PS5 Star Wars Classics?
“PS5 Star Wars Classics” is shorthand for Star Wars games offered as part of Sony’s PlayStation Classics program; it is not the name of a boxed PS5 product. The PS1 games are digital conversions of the original PlayStation releases for PS4 and PS5. They are not the original disc executable being read from a PS1 CD, and they do not make old memory cards or controllers compatible.

PS1, PS2 and PSP classics in the catalog are downloaded and run locally. PS3 classics are streamed. The games’ availability and catalog membership can vary by region and change over time.
As of late October 2026, the Canadian Premium catalog listed the PS1 Star Wars set as STAR WARS Episode I – The Phantom Menace, STAR WARS Rebel Assault II – The Hidden Empire and Star Wars: Demolition. The same Canadian Premium catalog list also includes PS2 games Star Wars: Bounty Hunter, Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter, Star Wars: Racer Revenge and Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Its PS3 entries include Star Wars: The Force Unleashed – Ultimate Sith Edition, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II, LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga and LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars. Those PS3 titles stream rather than install as local PS1 conversions.

Can you transfer an original PS1 memory card save to PS5?
No supported method is documented for importing an original PS1 memory-card save into these PS5 conversions. The gray PS1 memory card is an original-console peripheral, and the PS5 has no memory-card slot. Its front and rear I/O are USB Type-C and USB Type-A ports, not the proprietary PlayStation memory-card connector.
Sony’s Store disclaimer is explicit for The Phantom Menace and Rebel Assault II: “This version does not support the PlayStation® console’s peripherals, therefore some functionality may not be available.” That includes the original memory card. There is no official memory-card reader workflow, conversion utility or published compatibility rate for moving a 1990s save into these editions. A USB adapter or a copied file should not be assumed to work just because it can connect to a modern console or computer.
You can still use the game’s own save points where they exist. The original in-game save system remains part of the converted game, but saving creates modern console save data rather than writing to a removable gray PS1 card. The conversion also adds an emulator quick-save function, which lets you save at a point outside the game’s original save system. Depending on the title, the conversion menu also offers rewind, up-rendering and video filters.
These are two different kinds of save: an in-game save follows the older game’s own rules and save points; a quick save captures a state through the conversion software. Neither one turns an original memory-card file into a supported PS5 save. If you have PlayStation Plus cloud storage available, it can back up or sync modern save data. That is useful for supported console save files, but it is not a way to import a PS1 card.
Older digital ownership is a separate question from save transfer. GamesHub reported in January 2025 that some PS1, PS2 or PSP classics previously bought digitally through an older PlayStation Network storefront could qualify for a free redemption of a later PS4/PS5 conversion on the same account. That concerns a digital license, not progress stored on a physical memory card; eligibility depends on the specific game and account.

Do original PS1 DualShock controllers work on PS5?
No, not as supported controllers for these conversions. Original PlayStation DualShock and Dual Analog controllers use the PlayStation controller connector, which the PS5 does not have. Sony’s Store peripheral disclaimer applies to the original controllers as well as memory cards.

Sony’s PS5 FAQ says PS5 games require DualSense, while the converted Star Wars classics are listed as PS4 and PS5 titles. If you choose the PS5 SKU, DualSense is the safe official choice.
A DualShock 4 is also an official option when you launch the PS4 version of a dual-listed classic. Sony’s FAQ states: “For PS4 games played on PS5, players can use either the DualShock 4 wireless controller or the DualSense wireless controller.” Do not extend that PS4 rule to the PS5 edition: Sony says PS5 games require DualSense.

Some third-party adapters claim to connect older controllers to newer systems, but compatibility with these particular Star Wars conversions is not established here. Such an adapter would not make the original controller an officially supported PS5 peripheral. The 8BitDo Retro Receiver covered in 2023 press works in the opposite direction: it lets a DualSense communicate with an original PS1 or PS2, not an original DualShock communicate with a PS5.
Does a PS5 play original Star Wars PS1 discs?
No. A disc-edition PS5’s drive supports PS5 and PS4 discs; it does not read original PlayStation CD-ROM games as playable PS1 titles. Inserting an original Star Wars disc will not launch the original game or unlock the modern digital conversion.

The Store conversion is a separate edition for newer consoles. Owning the original disc and owning a PS4/PS5 digital license are different things, so the disc does not grant access to the conversion. This also means the original disc, memory card and controller cannot be combined with the PS5 edition as if it were a backward-compatible PS1 setup.
What replaces the original hardware features?
The PS1 conversions preserve the games while adding some convenience and display options. For both The Phantom Menace and Rebel Assault II, the PlayStation Store describes up-rendering, rewind, quick save and custom video filters. These are conversion features; availability and behavior can vary by game.
The quick-save function is especially useful if the original game’s save points are far apart, but it should be treated as a separate convenience layer rather than an imported memory-card save. Rewind provides a way to back up through recent gameplay, while video filters let players alter the presentation. The exact menu and controls can differ, so open the conversion’s in-game menu or PS5 control center while playing to see the options available for that title.
Sony cautions that these conversions can sometimes play differently from their original PlayStation versions, and that some features may not function properly. This is a useful expectation to set: a modern conversion adds features but does not promise identical behavior in every respect.

Do you need PlayStation Plus Premium to play them?
Not necessarily. You can access a catalog game while it is included with PlayStation Plus Premium in your region, or buy an eligible conversion outright from the PlayStation Store. A Premium catalog download remains tied to an active subscription; a standalone purchase removes the subscription requirement for that purchased game.

Prices and plans differ by country and can change. Destructoid listed the three PS1 Star Wars titles at $4.99 each in November 2024, and PlayStation LifeStyle still quoted The Phantom Menace at $4.99 on October 29, 2026. Those are reported US prices, not a promise of the current price in every storefront. The annual US Premium fee cited by SlashGear in 2025 was $159.99. Everyeye reported Italian prices in 2024 of €16.99 monthly, €49.99 quarterly or €151.99 annually, with standalone PS1 classics commonly listed at €4.99–€9.99. GamesHub reported Australian standalone classic prices of about AUD $5.99–$14.95 in 2025. Check the live Store listing and local subscription page before purchasing.
For a catalog game, confirm that the specific title is still included in your region’s Classics Catalog; the Canadian Classics Catalog listed more than 400 PS1, PS2, PS3 and PSP games as of October 24, 2026, but catalog size and selection are not universal. Choose the standalone purchase if keeping access to that one game after a subscription ends matters more than catalog access.
How do you start playing on PS5?
- Choose the access route. Open the PlayStation Plus hub and look in the Classics Catalog if you have Premium (or the equivalent Deluxe tier in some markets). Otherwise, search the PlayStation Store for the particular Star Wars title and check whether it is available for purchase.
- Confirm the edition and region. PS1 and PS2 classics download locally; PS3 catalog titles stream. Check that the listing is the PS4/PS5 conversion you want, and do not expect an original disc to activate it.
- Download or stream. Install PS1/PS2 titles from the Store or catalog. A PS3 classic is delivered by streaming, which is a different route and depends on the service and regional availability.
- Use a supported controller. Play the PS5 SKU with DualSense. If you select the PS4 SKU on PS5, DualShock 4 is also supported under Sony’s stated PS4-game rule.
- Check save options before relying on them. Use original in-game save points as needed, and open the conversion menu to locate quick save, rewind and any available display options. These create or affect the modern edition’s experience; they do not read an old memory card.
- Keep access in mind. If you are playing through Premium, maintain the active subscription and check the catalog listing. If you bought the conversion outright, that purchase is the route to keeping access to that game without the catalog subscription.
Which setup should you choose?
If the goal is to continue a playthrough from a real PS1 memory card or use an original DualShock, the PS5 conversion is not the right setup for that hardware. The supported path is to play the PS4/PS5 digital edition with a modern controller and use its own save system. The old accessories belong with compatible original hardware; they are not prerequisites or add-ons that make the PS5 edition work.

If convenience is more important than preserving a particular card save, the conversion offers local play for PS1 releases, a quick-save feature and other emulator options. Pick Premium for access to an eligible catalog while subscribed, or buy the conversion if you want that game without depending on catalog membership. For older progress, treat the modern edition as a fresh save unless an official supported transfer is specifically announced for that title.
What else should you know before switching editions?
The modern listing can differ from the original release in features, trophies or other extras. For example, PlayStation LifeStyle reported on October 29, 2026 that The Phantom Menace gained 21 trophies, including a Platinum, roughly two years after the conversion launched. That is an update to the modern edition, not evidence that original PS1 save data carries over. The same report described the original game as a 1999 PlayStation and Windows release; the Store conversion itself launched January 16, 2024. Rebel Assault II launched on the Store on April 16, 2024.

Store ratings are also ratings of the current digital listing, not a measure of save compatibility: the US Store page showed 4.19 stars from 1,928 ratings for The Phantom Menace and 3.76 from 812 ratings for Rebel Assault II in the listings accessed October 29, 2026. These figures can move as users rate the games. They do not change Sony’s peripheral support statement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will an original PS1 memory card keep working if I buy a USB adapter?
There is no official Sony-documented adapter or import process for these conversions, and compatibility of third-party adapters with the specific games has not been established. A connector adapter alone does not establish that the game can read the card’s save format.

Some older digital purchases have been eligible for a free redemption when a modern conversion launches, but this depends on the game and the account. Check the Store while signed into the account that made the earlier purchase; the disc version is a separate license.
Can I play the PS3 Star Wars classics without streaming?
The PS3 entries in the cited Classics Catalog are streaming-only, unlike locally downloaded PS1 and PS2 classics. Availability depends on the PlayStation Plus offering and region, so check the game’s local listing for access requirements.
Do the PS5 conversions always behave exactly like the original PS1 releases?
No such guarantee appears in Sony’s Store description. Sony cautions that a conversion may sometimes play differently from the original and that some features may not function properly.
