PS5 Safe Mode is a recovery menu that starts the console with only essential functions enabled. Use it when the PS5 has a blank screen, storage or startup errors, a failed update, sluggish system features, or software corruption. Start with the least disruptive option that matches your symptom: restart for a temporary fault, video-output changes for display problems, storage repair for startup errors, cache clearing or database rebuilding for indexing problems, and a reset or system-software reinstall only after backing up your data.
To open Safe Mode, switch the PS5 off, then hold the power button until you hear the second beep (about seven seconds after the first). Connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button. The menu then shows the recovery choices described below.

What does each PS5 Safe Mode option do?
Every option targets a different class of fault, and the data risk is not the same. This table lets you match the menu item to the symptom before you select it.
| Safe Mode option | What it changes | User-data impact | USB required? | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Restart PS5 | Leaves Safe Mode and boots normally. | Preserves data. | No | A one-time freeze or startup glitch. |
| Change Video Output | Provides Change Resolution and Change HDCP Mode. | Preserves data. | No | Blank screen, unsupported resolution, or HDMI handshake failure. |
| Repair Console Storage | Repairs storage and startup problems. | Sony states that it does not erase data. | No | The PS5 will not start correctly or reports a storage issue. |
| Update System Software | Installs a newer system version over the existing installation, online or from USB storage. | The normal update path preserves user data. | Only for the USB method. | An interrupted, failed, or outdated firmware update. |
| Restore Default Settings | Returns console settings to factory defaults. | Games, apps, screenshots, video clips, and saved data remain on console storage. | No | Incorrect display, audio, network, or other configuration settings. |
| Clear Cache and Rebuild Database | Clear System Software Cache removes temporary system data; Rebuild Database scans the drive and creates a new content index. | Sony describes database rebuilding as non-destructive. | No | Feature slowdowns, indexing oddities, or stale icons. |
| Reset PS5 | Restores the console to its original state. | Deletes all user data. | No | A final troubleshooting step or preparation for transfer to another owner. |
| Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) | Deletes user data, removes the installed PS5 system software, and installs it from an official reinstallation file. | Deletes all console data; Sony calls this a last resort. | Yes | Severe or corrupted system-software failure after update troubleshooting. |
“Repair Console Storage” is specifically described by Sony as not erasing data. By contrast, both reset choices are destructive. If a menu warning says data will be lost, stop and make a backup before proceeding.

How do I enter PS5 Safe Mode?
Safe Mode requires a complete shutdown and a wired controller connection; a wireless controller cannot be paired from the recovery menu.
- Press the PS button, open the power menu, and choose Turn Off PS5. If the console is frozen, hold the power button until it shuts down.
- With the console off, press and hold the power button. Release it after the second beep. The first beep sounds when you begin holding the button; the second follows about seven seconds later.
- Connect the controller to the PS5 with a USB cable. Use a cable that carries data, not a charge-only lead.
- Press the controller’s PS button. The Safe Mode menu appears on the television.
- Choose the option that corresponds to the fault. If the screen is blank, begin with the video-output choices rather than a reset.
Safe Mode is intentionally limited. Features such as normal wireless pairing and the regular home-screen interface are unavailable until you select Restart PS5 or complete another action.

Which Safe Mode option should I try first?
Use a least-to-most disruptive sequence. The symptom, not the menu order alone, should determine your choice.
For a temporary freeze or one-off startup problem
Select Restart PS5. It simply exits recovery and performs a normal boot, so it is the safest first test when no specific error points elsewhere.
For a blank screen or “no signal” message
Select Change Video Output, then try Change Resolution. This can restore a mode your television supports. If the display still fails during the HDMI handshake, return to Safe Mode and try Change HDCP Mode; some televisions, receivers, and capture devices negotiate HDCP differently.

For storage warnings or a PS5 that will not start properly
Choose Repair Console Storage. Sony says this repairs storage-related startup issues without erasing data. It is not a replacement for a backup and does not restore deleted files.
For a failed or interrupted update
Choose Update System Software. Try the normal online update first when the console can reach PlayStation Network. Use the USB procedure below when an online update repeatedly fails or the console cannot complete its update screen.
For wrong settings with otherwise healthy content
Choose Restore Default Settings. This resets configuration rather than content: installed games and apps, captures, and saved data stay on the console storage, but you may need to configure display, audio, network, and other preferences again.
For sluggish features or stale game icons
Open Clear Cache and Rebuild Database. Start with Clear System Software Cache when features have slowed or behaved oddly. Use Rebuild Database when the content index appears wrong; Sony gives a deleted game’s icon remaining on the Home screen as an example of the sort of inconsistency this scan can address.
For total software corruption or a change of owner
Use Reset PS5 only after backing up. Select Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) when the installed system software itself is damaged and ordinary updates have not fixed it. Both reset paths erase user data, and the reinstall also removes the current system software before installing the official file.

Will Rebuild Database delete my games or saved data?
Rebuild Database is intended to recreate the PS5’s content index, not to factory-reset the console. Sony describes it as non-destructive, so installed games, applications, captures, and saves should remain available. The process can change how icons are ordered or displayed because it generates a fresh index.
Do not confuse it with Reset PS5. A reset deliberately deletes user data. Because any recovery operation can expose an underlying storage or software failure, keep a current cloud or USB backup before using Safe Mode, especially if you may need to escalate to a reset.
How do I update PS5 system software from a USB drive?
A manual update uses a FAT32- or exFAT-formatted USB drive and the exact folder and filename Sony specifies. The update file needs about 1.1 GB of free space on the drive.
- On a computer, format the USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT. Formatting removes existing files, so copy anything important elsewhere first.
- Create a folder at the root of the drive named
PS5. - Inside
PS5, create a second folder namedUPDATE. - Download the official PS5 update file and save it inside that folder with the exact name
PS5UPDATE.PUP. The capitalization and spelling matter; do not leave a browser-added extension such as.PUP.PUP. - Eject the drive safely from the computer and connect it directly to the PS5.
- Start Safe Mode, choose Update System Software, then Update from USB Storage Device, and select OK.
- Allow the console to restart and finish. Do not remove power or the USB drive while installation is in progress.
If Safe Mode says it cannot find an update file, check the drive’s format, the two folder names, the filename, and that the file is in PS5/UPDATE rather than one level deeper. A drive that works for ordinary file storage can still fail if it is formatted in an unsupported format or the file was renamed.
How do I reinstall PS5 system software from USB?
Reinstallation is different from a normal update. It wipes the console, removes the currently installed system software, and then installs the official reinstallation package. Sony says the reinstallation file needs about 1.2 GB of free space and that this is a last troubleshooting step.

- Back up saved data, captures, and any other files you need. A reinstallation deletes all data stored on the PS5.
- Format a USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT, then create the folders
PS5andUPDATEat the root. - Download the official reinstallation file and name it exactly
PS5UPDATE.PUPinsidePS5/UPDATE. Do not substitute an unofficial file. - With the PS5 powered off, connect the USB drive and enter Safe Mode by holding the power button until the second beep.
- Choose Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) and follow the on-screen confirmation prompts.
- Leave the console connected to power until the installation and initial setup finish. Removing power mid-install can leave the system unable to boot.
Do not schedule this procedure immediately before or after a known power outage. Sony warns that unofficial files or methods can prevent proper operation and may affect warranty or repair service.
What should I do if the PS5 is stuck in Safe Mode?
Use Sony’s recovery sequence before repeating other options. It is designed to clear a failed shutdown or temporary power state without jumping straight to a data-erasing reset.
- Hold the PS5 power button until the console turns off completely.
- Unplug the power cable and leave the console disconnected for 20 minutes.
- Reconnect power and start the PS5 normally.
- If it still enters Safe Mode, choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database, then select Clear System Software Cache.
- If Safe Mode continues to appear or the console cannot complete recovery, use PlayStation Repairs rather than repeatedly forcing shutdowns or trying unverified files.
A controller that is not detected can also make Safe Mode appear stuck. Reconnect it with a known-good data-capable USB cable directly to the console, then press PS; avoid hubs and wireless-only pairing during this process.

- Choosing a reset too early: Restore Default Settings preserves content, while Reset PS5 deletes it. Read the complete option name before confirming.
- Using the wrong USB file: An update package and a reinstallation package serve different purposes. Use the file intended for the menu option you selected.
- Incorrect folder nesting: The required path is exactly
PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUPat the USB drive’s root. - Charge-only controller cable: The controller may light up but still fail to communicate in Safe Mode. Use a cable that supports data.
- Interrupting power: Never unplug the console during an update or reinstall. A failed installation can require the destructive reinstall procedure.
- Assuming a rebuilt database repairs hardware: Rebuild Database fixes indexing and content-list problems; it cannot repair a failing drive, damaged HDMI port, or defective power supply.
When should I stop troubleshooting and seek repair?
Escalate when the PS5 repeatedly returns to Safe Mode after the 20-minute power disconnect, cache clearing, and a correctly prepared update attempt. Also seek service for recurring storage errors, unexplained shutdowns, physical damage, or a console that cannot display any Safe Mode screen after verified HDMI and controller connections.
Before service, record the exact on-screen error, which Safe Mode options you tried, and whether the console can reach the normal home screen. That information helps distinguish a display-path problem from storage or system-software failure. Keep backups current because a service process may require a reset.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does rebuilding the PS5 database make games run faster?
It can remove indexing inconsistencies that make menus or content lists feel slow, but it does not upgrade the console’s processor, graphics performance, or a game’s frame rate. If one game alone is slow, investigate that game’s installation or network conditions instead of repeatedly rebuilding the database.
Can I use an external hard drive for the Safe Mode update file?
The USB device must be formatted FAT32 or exFAT and contain the exact PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP path. Sony’s procedure does not require a particular brand, speed, or capacity; the stated free-space requirement is about 1.1 GB for an update file and about 1.2 GB for a reinstallation file.
Why does my PS5 controller charge but not work in Safe Mode?
A charge-only cable supplies power without carrying the data connection Safe Mode needs. Connect the controller directly to the console with a known-good data cable, then press PS; wireless pairing is not available in this menu.
What happens to my captures after Restore Default Settings?
Sony says screenshots and video clips remain on the console storage, along with games, apps, and saved data. You will lose customized settings, so note any network, display, or audio values you need to re-enter during setup.
