PS5 Prism does not require a special SSD. Prism is Sony’s cosmetic collection of transparent DualSense controllers and console covers, not a new console or storage interface. For directly playable extra PS5 capacity, install a compatible PCIe Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe SSD with effective cooling. The simplest documented fit is the officially licensed WD_BLACK SN850P with its integrated heatsink. Samsung’s 990 PRO with Heatsink and Corsair’s MP600 PRO LPX 2TB are manufacturer-described alternatives. All three recommendations are specification-based fits, not hands-on rankings or benchmark results.

At a glance
Name Best for Key spec Platforms Checked
WD_BLACK SN850P Simplest documented PS5 fit and licensed option 1TB–4TB: up to 7,300MB/s sequential read; 8TB: up to 7,200MB/s; integrated heatsink PS5 internal M.2 expansion Oct 2026
Samsung 990 PRO with Heatsink High-rated read speed in a pre-cooled drive 1TB, 2TB or 4TB; up to 7,450MB/s sequential read PS5-compatible PCIe 4.0 NVMe Oct 2026
Corsair MP600 PRO LPX 2TB Clearly identified 2TB pre-cooled alternative M.2 2280; up to 7,100MB/s sequential read; low-profile aluminum heat spreader PS5 and PS5 Pro Oct 2026

Is PS5 Prism a new storage standard?

No. Sony describes Prism as a new visual treatment for the PS5 console and DualSense controllers. The October 28, 2026 announcement covers Flare Orange, Emerald Green and Graphite Gray accessories, with preorders scheduled for November 10, 2026 and launch beginning February 4, 2027; those dates had not arrived when this guide was checked. The announcement does not introduce a Prism-branded SSD or change the M.2 slot specification. See Sony’s announcement at PlayStation.Blog.

Your console’s available space and model number, rather than its cover color, determine the upgrade you need. Prism covers are cosmetic. Sony has not yet identified which CFI chassis accepts each forthcoming cover SKU, so check the eventual product listing against the CFI number printed on the underside of your console before buying a cover. That unresolved cover compatibility question does not alter the SSD rules.

Which M.2 SSDs are the best fits for PS5 Prism storage?

Choose a complete drive-and-cooling assembly that stays inside Sony’s dimensions and performance guidance. The models below are ordered by how directly their documented specifications address PS5 installation, not by an independent performance test or a current-price contest.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

1. WD_BLACK SN850P — the straightforward licensed fit

Sony lists the WD_BLACK SN850P as an officially licensed storage option, and the drive includes a heatsink designed as part of the assembly. Sandisk’s December 2025 data sheet lists 1TB, 2TB, 4TB and 8TB heatsink variants. It rates sequential reads at up to 7,300MB/s for the 1TB through 4TB versions and up to 7,200MB/s for the 8TB version. The listed heatsink dimensions are 80 × 24.46 × 9.89mm, which sit below Sony’s 25mm maximum width and 11.25mm maximum assembled thickness.

The 2TB data-sheet identifier is WDBBYV0020BNC-WRSN. Verify the exact capacity and identifier on the package or retailer listing because dimensions and specifications should be checked for the particular variant you purchase. The speed figures are Sandisk manufacturer specifications, not PS5 gameplay measurements. Sony’s licensed designation is useful confirmation that this model was prepared for the console, but you still need to follow the installation procedure and confirm your console model.

2. Samsung 990 PRO with Heatsink — a high-speed specified alternative

Samsung describes its PCIe 4.0 NVMe model with the words “with Heatsink” as PS5 compatible and lists 1TB, 2TB and 4TB options in the United States. Samsung advertises up to 7,450MB/s sequential read on the product page at Samsung.com.

Buy the heatsink-equipped variant, not a bare 990 PRO plus an assumed cooler. Samsung’s listing is for a specific SKU, so do not transfer one capacity’s physical measurements to every other capacity without checking that version’s dimensions. The 7,450MB/s figure is Samsung’s listed maximum, accessed in 2026; it is not evidence that games load faster than they do from another qualifying Gen4 drive.

3. Corsair MP600 PRO LPX 2TB — a clearly specified 2TB option

Corsair identifies the exact 2TB SKU CSSD-F2000GBMP600PLP as PS5 and PS5 Pro compatible. It is an M.2 2280 drive with a preinstalled low-profile aluminum heat spreader and a manufacturer-listed sequential read speed of up to 7,100MB/s. The product page is Corsair.com.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Corsair’s product text refers both to expansion up to 4TB and to an 8TB option. Because those statements are inconsistent, this recommendation is limited to the clearly identified 2TB variant rather than assuming an unverified capacity. Confirm the complete assembly’s dimensions before installation. The 7,100MB/s number is Corsair’s claim, not a console benchmark.

How were these SSD picks selected?

The shortlist uses criteria that matter for a PS5 installation:

  • PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe operation in the M.2 form factor specified by Sony.
  • Effective cooling included in the assembly or available as a correctly sized low-profile solution.
  • A stated capacity that falls within Sony’s 250GB–8TB support range.
  • Sequential-read ratings at or above Sony’s 5,500MB/s recommendation.
  • Documented PS5 compatibility from Sony or the drive manufacturer.
  • An exact capacity or SKU where the manufacturer’s wording is clear.

No current prices or independent head-to-head measurements establish a budget winner. Compare a freshly checked price per usable capacity, warranty terms, the exact SKU, and the assembled dimensions before ordering.

What compatibility rules must an M.2 SSD meet?

PS5 M.2 checklist

  • Interface: PCI-Express Gen4x4 NVMe, Socket 3, Key M. M.2 SATA SSDs are not supported; Sony states, “M.2 SATA SSDs aren’t supported.”
  • Capacity: 250GB minimum and 8TB maximum.
  • Supported lengths: 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110.
  • Maximum assembled width: 25mm, including the cooling structure.
  • Maximum assembled thickness: 11.25mm total, with no more than 8.0mm above and 2.45mm below the circuit board.
  • Performance guidance: Sony recommends at least 5,500MB/s sequential read.
  • Cooling: Effective heat dissipation is required. Measure the SSD and heatsink together, not separately.
  • Module sides: Both single-sided and double-sided M.2 devices are supported when the complete assembly fits.

These figures come from PlayStation Support, accessed in 2026. Sony also warns that meeting the listed specifications does not guarantee every third-party drive will work, and a higher rated sequential speed does not guarantee the same game performance as the factory storage.

How much M.2 capacity do you need?

Check your actual free space before choosing a capacity: open Settings > Storage on the PS5. A 1TB drive adds useful room for a smaller library, while 2TB is a practical step up for players who regularly keep several large PS5 games installed. Choose 4TB or 8TB when your goal is a much larger concurrently installed collection and you accept the higher purchase cost. Those are use-case decisions, not a universal capacity ranking; Sony’s expansion ceiling is 8TB.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Sandisk’s December 2025 data sheet estimates that an 8TB SN850P can hold up to 200 games using a 36GB average game-size assumption. That is a manufacturer calculation, not a prediction of your library: many current games are substantially larger, and downloadable expansions, patches and reserved space change the result.

Can you play PS5 games from an external USB drive?

An internal, qualifying M.2 can store and launch both PS5 and PS4 games. USB extended storage can store PS5 games, but a PS5 title must be copied back to the console’s internal storage or the M.2 before it can run. PS4 games can launch directly from compatible USB extended storage.

Need Internal compatible M.2 External USB extended storage
Store and launch PS5 games Yes Store only; copy back before play
Store and launch PS4 games Yes Yes
Installation Open the console, install the cooled SSD and format it Connect the drive and configure it as USB extended storage

Sony explains the distinction in its storage-solutions guide. USB storage is therefore an archive option, not a substitute when your priority is directly playable PS5 capacity. Saved data and cloud-storage settings are separate from game-installation storage; a cloud-save subscription does not replace an M.2 game drive.

How do you install an M.2 SSD in a PS5?

Prepare the console and the complete SSD assembly before opening anything. You need current PS5 system software, a well-lit table, a number 1 Phillips (cross-head) screwdriver, and a way to ground yourself before handling the drive. Sony publishes separate illustrated procedures for the CFI-1000 and CFI-2000/7000 model groups at its M.2 installation page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Update and shut down. Install the latest available PS5 system software. Turn the console completely off, disconnect the power and remove other cables. Do not work on a Rest Mode console.
  2. Move to a clear surface. Place the PS5 on a well-lit table. Ground yourself to reduce static risk and handle the SSD only by its edges.
  3. Remove the correct cover. Follow Sony’s illustration for your CFI-1000 or CFI-2000/7000 group. Remove the chassis cover and then the expansion-slot cover; do not force a panel in the wrong direction.
  4. Set the spacer. Inside the slot, position the supplied spacer at the hole matching the SSD length: 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 or 22110.
  5. Insert the drive. Align the M.2 connector, insert the module at an angle and press it down gently. Secure it with the screw at the spacer. Keep the heatsink or heat spreader attached if the drive arrived with one.
  6. Close the console. Refit the expansion-slot cover and the exterior chassis cover before reconnecting cables. Sony says not to operate the console with its cover removed.
  7. Format when prompted. Turn on the PS5 and follow the on-screen prompt to format the M.2. The first-time format erases the entire drive, including any data already on it, so back up existing contents first.
  8. Set installation locations. For new downloads, open Settings > Storage > Installation Location. To relocate existing games, select a title in Game Library, press Options, and choose Move Games and Apps.

Following Sony’s instructions with a qualifying drive generally should not affect the manufacturer warranty, but damage caused by improper installation may not be covered. If the console does not detect the drive, power it off, unplug it, reopen the slot and recheck connector seating, spacer position, screw placement and the complete assembly’s dimensions.

How should you choose between a bare SSD and an integrated heatsink?

An integrated heatsink is the least complicated route because the manufacturer has supplied one assembly whose dimensions can be checked as a unit. A bare qualifying SSD can work with a PS5-compatible low-profile heatsink, but the combined width and thickness must remain inside Sony’s limits. Never stack a second heatsink on a drive that already has integrated cooling; the extra height can prevent the cover from closing or exceed the slot clearance.

  • Choose the SN850P when you want Sony’s licensed designation and a single documented heatsink-equipped package.
  • Choose the Samsung 990 PRO with Heatsink when that exact pre-cooled variant and its capacity meet your requirements.
  • Choose the Corsair MP600 PRO LPX 2TB when 2TB is sufficient and you want a low-profile spreader included with a specifically identified PS5-compatible SKU.

Do not select solely by the largest sequential-read number. Sony’s 5,500MB/s recommendation is a compatibility guideline, and Sony does not promise that a drive rated above it will produce shorter game load times than another compliant model.

What mistakes most often prevent a successful upgrade?

  • Buying M.2 SATA: The M.2 shape alone is not enough; the interface must be PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe. Sony explicitly excludes M.2 SATA.
  • Measuring the board without the cooler: Sony’s width and thickness limits apply to the installed assembly.
  • Adding a second heatsink: An integrated cooler already occupies the available clearance.
  • Formatting without a backup: The first PS5 format wipes the entire M.2.
  • Expecting USB to launch PS5 games: USB extended storage archives PS5 titles but does not run them directly.
  • Assuming every capacity shares one SKU’s dimensions: Check the exact capacity’s product page or data sheet, especially for the Samsung model.
  • Using the wrong chassis procedure: Follow the illustration for the console’s CFI-1000 or CFI-2000/7000 family.
  • Operating with the cover removed: Refit both covers before powering up.

If an installation fails, first power down and disconnect the console. Recheck the drive’s connector, spacer hole, retaining screw and cooling clearance, then verify that the drive’s interface and capacity appear on Sony’s supported list. A drive that meets every published number still is not guaranteed by Sony to work, so retain the receipt and manufacturer support details.

Do Prism covers fit every PS5 model?

Not necessarily. The October 2026 Prism announcement does not map each cover SKU to the original PS5, Slim or Pro chassis. Before ordering a cover, read the eventual listing for its supported CFI model and compare it with the number on your console’s underside. This is separate from M.2 compatibility: the same Sony storage rules apply regardless of which cosmetic cover is installed.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to buy a separate heatsink for the WD_BLACK SN850P?

No. The SN850P versions described here include an integrated heatsink. Adding another cooler can exceed the PS5 slot’s thickness limit, so treat the supplied drive-and-heatsink unit as the complete assembly.

Will an 8TB SSD really hold 200 PS5 games?

That figure is Sandisk’s estimate for the 8TB SN850P using a 36GB average game-size assumption. Actual capacity varies because many games, patches and expansions are larger, and the PS5 reserves some space for system operation.

Does a 7,450MB/s SSD make PS5 games load faster than a 5,500MB/s SSD?

Not automatically. Sony recommends at least 5,500MB/s sequential read but does not guarantee that a higher rated number produces the same or better game performance than factory storage. Manufacturer sequential-read figures are useful for checking the specification, not for predicting a particular title’s loading time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I move saved data to the M.2 drive?

The M.2 expansion slot is for game installations. Saved-data management and cloud-storage settings are handled separately in the PS5 system software, so moving games to an M.2 does not by itself move or replace your saved-data backups.
