There is no separate “PS5 Prism” console or Prism-only migration tool. Sony’s Prism Collection, introduced on October 28, 2026, is a cosmetic line of transparent DualSense controllers and matching console covers. Set up the replacement PS5 exactly like any other PS5: use Sony’s built-in Data Transfer when both consoles work, PlayStation Plus cloud storage for saves only, or USB Backup and Restore for a complete copy. A wired LAN connection can make a large transfer faster, while an existing USB extended-storage drive or M.2 SSD can avoid copying installed games over the network.
Do not initialize, sell, or give away the old console until you have opened the important profiles, saves, games, captures, and settings on the destination. The procedures below cover PS5-to-PS5, PS4-to-PS5, PS5 Pro, PS4 save files, child accounts, external storage, and the destructive parts of restoring a backup.

The Prism Collection is a styling option, not a new hardware platform. Sony announced three transparent DualSense wireless controllers and matching PS5 console covers in Flare Orange, Emerald Green, and Graphite Gray. Sony says the design is intended to give owners a closer look at the controller and console construction; Digital Trends described it as a cosmetic upgrade for an existing PS5.
The recommended price is $84.99 USD, €84.99, £74.99, or ¥12,480 including tax for a Prism DualSense controller. Matching console covers are $74.99 USD, €74.99, £64.99, or ¥9,980 including tax. Sony lists pre-orders from November 10, 2026, with launches beginning February 4, 2027; dates vary by country. Covers are sold directly by PlayStation in the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Spain, Portugal, and Italy, with limited retailer quantities elsewhere (prices and availability checked October 2026).

Sony’s cover-replacement instructions separate original CFI-1000 consoles from the CFI-2000/7000 groups. The announcement does not establish which chassis each Prism cover fits, so confirm the model compatibility for your console before ordering. Changing a cover does not move users, games, saves, captures, or settings; those remain governed by the normal PS5 transfer and backup systems.
Which transfer method should you use?
Choose based on what you need to move and whether you can keep the old console available. Data Transfer is the most complete additive method when both systems operate. Cloud storage is convenient for saves but requires PlayStation Plus. A USB backup contains the console image but restoring it erases existing destination data.

| Method | What it moves | Old console needed? | Effect on destination | Cost and speed considerations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Data Transfer | Users, PS5-playable games and saves, captures, and settings | Yes, powered on and on the same network | Additive; data already on the destination is skipped | No PlayStation Plus fee; LAN is usually faster than Wi-Fi |
| PlayStation Plus cloud | Saved data only | Only to upload or sync; not needed after the upload | Download selected saves to the new console | Membership required; internet speed controls upload and download time |
| USB Backup and Restore | Games and apps, saves, captures, and settings | No, once a backup is complete | Destructive on restore; all destination data is erased | Requires a FAT32 or exFAT USB drive; restore requires the same or newer system software |
| Reuse USB extended storage | Installed game files already on that drive | No, after safely disconnecting it | Games remain on the external drive; PS5 titles must be copied to console or M.2 storage to play | Physical move is often quicker than downloading again |
| Move an M.2 SSD | Installed games on the expansion SSD | No, after removing it correctly | Games become available after installing the drive and signing in | No reformat is required when moving between PS5 consoles |
How do I use Data Transfer from one PS5 to another?
Use this route when the source PS5 still works and you want users, settings, saves, captures, and PS5-playable games. The source is the old console; the destination is the new PS5.
Prepare both consoles
- Sign in to the same PlayStation account on the source and destination. Use the account that owns the games and saved data.
- Update system software on both consoles to the latest available version.
- Synchronize trophy information on the source. Trophies are not included in a USB backup, so syncing before you retire the console prevents a missing trophy record.
- Connect both consoles to the same network, either wirelessly or with LAN cables. If both are already wired to the network, you do not need a separate cable directly between the consoles.
- Keep the source powered on. It does not need to remain connected to a television once the transfer has started.
Sony says a LAN cable sold separately can make the transfer faster when the consoles normally use Wi-Fi. Do not turn either console off, change network settings, or run an internet connection test during the operation; Sony warns that these actions can damage or lose data.
During first-time setup of the new PS5
Turn on the destination and follow the setup prompts until the data-transfer stage. Select the source PS5 when it is discovered, confirm the users and data to move, and enter the same login passcode when prompted. The destination restarts during the process. Some game data continues copying after the restart, and a game can be launched as soon as its thumbnail appears in the games home. Monitor the remaining work in Control Center > Downloads/Uploads.
If the destination is already set up
- On the destination PS5, open Settings > System > System Software > Data Transfer.
- Select Continue, choose the source PS5, and follow the on-screen prompts.
- Leave both consoles undisturbed until the transfer finishes. The destination may restart and continue copying afterward.
Data already stored on the destination is not transferred again. Sony supports one source console per destination PS5. Sony publishes no official duration estimate. Asurion’s June 8, 2026 guidance says a large library can take hours over Wi-Fi and that wired networking is usually faster; those are Asurion’s observations, not a Sony timing guarantee. Digital Trends has used a 30-minute example for a PS5-to-PS5 Pro transfer, but that is not an official Sony measurement and should not be treated as a promise.

How do I transfer from a PS4 to a PS5?
A PS4 can supply PS5-playable games, saved data, users, and settings, but the timing of the transfer matters. User and account information and console settings from a PS4 transfer only during the destination’s initial setup.
During initial PS5 setup
Connect the PS4 and PS5 to the same network, update both systems, synchronize trophies, and follow the destination’s setup prompts for data transfer. At this stage Sony can transfer user and account information for users who have signed in on the PS4, saved data for PS5-playable games, PS5-playable game installations, and console settings.
After the PS5 has already been set up
On the destination, use Settings > System > System Software > Data Transfer > Continue. From a PS4 after setup, Sony limits the transfer to saved data for the user currently logged in and PS5-playable games. User/account information and console settings from the PS4 do not transfer at this stage, so complete the initial setup transfer if you need those items.
Child accounts
A child account cannot transfer during the destination’s initial setup in the normal way. Sony’s workarounds are to complete initial setup for the child account and transfer afterward, or to use an adult account for initial setup and transfer both adult and child accounts during that setup process.
Can PlayStation Plus move my saves without moving the games?
Yes. PlayStation Plus cloud storage is a saves-only route. It does not copy installed games, screenshots, video clips, or complete console settings, but it lets you sign in on the new console and download saved data.
Sony lists capacity of 100 GB for PS5 saved data and 100 GB for PS4 saved data, with a maximum of 1,000 PS4 saved-data files (figures current in 2026). Sony’s replacement-console guidance is: “If you get a new PlayStation console, just sign in to PlayStation and download your saved data.”
Enable automatic synchronization on the old PS5
- Open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode and enable Stay Connected to the Internet.
- Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- For PS5 games, choose Saved Data (PS5) > Sync Saved Data > Auto-Sync Saved Data > Enable Auto-Sync.
- For PS4 games, choose Saved Data (PS4) > Auto-Upload > Enable Auto-Upload.
Automatic updates must be enabled. PS5 synchronization keeps the console and cloud at the most recent data. PS4 saves upload automatically, but downloads to the new PS5 are manual.

Download saves on the new PS5
- Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Choose Saved Data (PS5) or Saved Data (PS4), then Download or Delete from Cloud Storage > Download to Console Storage.
- Check each file’s timestamp before downloading. Select the newest version so an older cloud file does not overwrite more recent progress.
PlayStation Plus is not required for Data Transfer, PS4 save copies to USB, or a full USB backup.
How do I back up everything to USB and restore it?
USB Backup and Restore is useful when the old PS5 works long enough to create a backup but you cannot keep both consoles on the same network. It includes games and apps, saved data, screenshots, video clips, and settings for all users on the console.
Prepare the backup drive
Use a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. The USB volume used as PS5 extended storage for game installations has a different format and cannot store this backup file. Trophies are also excluded, so synchronize them before backing up.
Create the backup
- Connect the FAT32 or exFAT drive to the source PS5.
- Open Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Back Up Your PS5.
- Choose the data categories to include and select Back Up.
- Allow the console to restart and finish writing the backup. Do not turn it off during the operation.
Keep the drive safely stored after the console confirms completion. The backup is linked to the PlayStation account used to make it.
Recommended Free Tools
Restore on the destination
- Update the destination PS5 to the same system-software version or a newer version than the one used for the backup.
- Connect the backup drive and open Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Restore Your PS5.
- Select the backup and confirm the warning. The destination restarts and restores the selected data.
Restoring is destructive: Sony states, “When restoring data, your PS5 console will erase all data saved on your console.” Erased destination data cannot be restored. Sign in with the same PlayStation account used to create the backup. Restoration also disables Console Sharing and Offline Play; re-enable that setting afterward if other household users need it.
Can I reuse a USB drive or move an M.2 SSD instead of copying games?
Yes. Reusing existing game storage can avoid downloading or transferring large installations. It does not replace the need to move saved data and settings; use Data Transfer, cloud storage, or a backup for those.
USB extended storage
Sony requires SuperSpeed USB at 5 Gbps or later, with capacity from 250 GB to 8 TB. Do not use a USB hub, and use only one extended-storage drive at a time. A drive previously formatted as PS4 or PS5 extended storage can be connected to the destination without reformatting.

- PS5 games can be stored there, but must be copied to console storage or an M.2 SSD before they can be played.
- Safely disconnect the drive from the old console, connect it to the new one, and sign in to the same account to access its games.
Move an M.2 SSD
The supported expansion is a PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe drive with a Key M interface and Socket 3 connector. Sony specifies 250 GB to 8 TB capacity, recommends 5,500 MB/s sequential read speed, requires a heatsink or other cooling structure, and does not support M.2 SATA drives.

- Remove the M.2 expansion drive using a #1 Phillips screwdriver and keep its heatsink attached.
- Install it in the destination PS5’s M.2 bay, following the console’s cover and bay instructions.
- Start the destination and sign in to the same PlayStation account. Sony says formatting is not required when moving an M.2 SSD between two PS5 consoles.
If you have disc-based games, insert each disc into the destination to install or play it. A digital-only console, including a PS5 Pro without the optional disc drive, needs the separately sold disc drive to install games from discs. Digital games can instead be downloaded from the destination’s Game Library.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do I copy PS4 saves with a USB drive?
PS4 saved data can be copied individually to USB, unlike PS5 saves. Sony’s explicit limitation is: “You can’t copy PS5 saved data from your PS5 console to a USB drive.”
- On the source PS4, copy the desired PS4 saved data to a compatible USB drive using the PS4 saved-data management screen.
- Connect that drive to the PS5.
- Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS4) > USB Drive > Copy to Console Storage.
- Start the PS4 game and verify that the expected progress appears.
This USB-save method does not copy PS5 saves, installed games, screenshots, video clips, or console settings.
What should I check before wiping or selling the old console?
Keep the old system intact until the destination has passed a practical verification checklist.

Only after these checks should you initialize the old PS4 or PS5 for another person. This protects against a missed offline save or an incomplete transfer.
What can go wrong during a PS5 transfer?
The consoles cannot find each other
Install the latest system software on both systems, sign in to the same account, and verify that both are on the same network. If Wi-Fi discovery remains unreliable, connect both to the router with LAN cables. When both are wired to the network, a direct console-to-console cable is unnecessary.

The transfer appears frozen
Do not power off, change network settings, or start an internet connection test while the transfer is active. Check Control Center > Downloads/Uploads on the destination; some game data continues after the restart even though the initial screen has changed.
A save is missing or older than expected
Check whether the game was played offline on the source. For cloud migration, compare timestamps before downloading. For a PS4 save on USB, repeat the copy to console storage and confirm that you selected the correct user and game.
The USB backup cannot be restored
Update the destination to the same or newer system-software version than the backup. Make sure the drive is the FAT32 or exFAT backup drive, not a USB extended-storage volume used for game installations, and sign in with the account that created the backup.
The destination lost its existing data
That is expected after Restore Your PS5: restore erases all data already on the destination. If you needed both sets of data, use Data Transfer instead, because it skips items already stored on the destination rather than replacing the entire system.
Which approach is safest for most owners?
When both consoles work, update them, sync trophies, connect them to the same network, and run Data Transfer; use a LAN connection if the household normally relies on Wi-Fi. Add a cloud sync or USB backup as an independent safety copy if the saves are important. Reconnect a USB extended-storage drive or move an M.2 SSD to avoid recopying game installations, then verify profiles, saves, media, and settings before you initialize the old console. The Prism shell and controller can change the appearance of the setup, but they do not change any of these transfer rules.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need PlayStation Plus to transfer data to a new PS5?
No. PlayStation Plus is required for cloud storage, but Sony’s direct Data Transfer, PS4 save copying to USB, and full USB Backup and Restore work without a membership. Cloud storage is the option that lets you leave the old console offline after its saves have uploaded.
Can I transfer only one game instead of the whole PS5?
Data Transfer is designed around the console’s users and supported data, and it skips games or saves already present on the destination. For a single installed game, moving its USB extended-storage drive or downloading it from Game Library is usually more targeted; its save still needs Data Transfer or another save method.
Will my trophies appear on the new PS5?
Trophies are synchronized with PlayStation Network rather than included in a USB backup. Sync the trophy information on the old console before retiring it, then sign in to the same account on the destination.
Can I use a backup made on one PlayStation account with another account?
No. Sony links backed-up data to the account that created it, so restoration on another console requires signing in with that same PlayStation account.
What happens if my new PS5 already contains games and saves?
Data Transfer does not copy data that is already stored on the destination. USB Restore behaves differently: it erases all destination data first, so make a separate copy of anything you want to keep before restoring.
