To add storage that can launch PS5 games, install a compatible PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD in the PS5 expansion bay, let the console format it, then move installed titles through Game Library. The SSD needs its own cooling and must fit Sony’s clearance limits; an M.2 SATA drive or an oversized heatsink is not suitable. Once installed, the drive can hold and run PS5 and PS4 games. USB extended storage remains useful for PS4 games and for storing PS5 games, but a PS5 title on USB must be copied back to playable console or M.2 storage before you can launch it. Which M.2 SSD fits a PS5?
The correct drive is a PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe M.2 SSD with a Key M connector. Sony lists capacities from 250 GB through 8 TB and supports the 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110 form factors. Sony recommends sequential read performance of at least 5,500 MB/s, but says that meeting or exceeding the figure does not guarantee identical performance to the PS5’s internal storage.

Those are Sony Interactive Entertainment specifications from its US support page, whose publication date is not shown and which was verified in 2026. Sony also warns that it does not guarantee every third-party SSD that appears to meet the listed specifications. Treat the complete assembled drive—SSD plus heatsink or other cooling—not the bare board as the item you must measure.
Do not add a second heatsink on top of a drive that already has one. If the SSD’s slot cover will not close without pressure, stop and check the assembled dimensions rather than forcing it.

What should I check before opening the console?
Prepare the drive, the console and the workspace before removing a cover. A short checklist prevents most installation failures.
- Confirm the drive type: PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe, Key M; not M.2 SATA.
- Confirm capacity and length: choose a supported capacity and board length, then check the installed cooler’s width and thickness.
- Check cooling: Sony says, “Do not use an M.2 SSD without a heat-dissipation mechanism, such as a heat sink or heat transfer sheet.”
- Check your console group: the cover-removal procedure differs between CFI-1000 and CFI-2000/7000 systems.
- Have the tool: you need a #1 Phillips screwdriver. A flashlight and a well-lit, clean table are optional but useful.
- Update the PS5: install the latest available system software before fitting the drive.
- Power down safely: turn the PS5 fully off, disconnect every cable and allow it to cool. Touch a grounded metal object to discharge static electricity.
Never operate the console with a cover removed. Keep the SSD’s original packaging until you have confirmed that the drive initializes and appears in Storage.
How do I install an M.2 SSD in a PS5?
Install the drive only while the PS5 is completely powered off and disconnected. The broad sequence is the same for both model groups: expose the expansion bay, set the spacer for the SSD’s length, insert the drive diagonally and fully, fasten it, then replace every cover before reconnecting power.
How do I install an SSD in a CFI-1000 PS5?
- Turn the cooled console off, unplug it and remove the base.
- Place the console PS-logo-down with the power button facing you, then remove the specified outer cover for this model group.
- Remove the expansion-slot cover. Keep its screw where it cannot be lost.
- Remove the SSD-retaining screw and lift out the spacer.
- Move the spacer into the groove marked for your SSD’s length. Use the groove that matches the board, not the heatsink.
- Align the SSD’s notch with the connector and insert the board diagonally until it is fully seated.
- Lower the free end so the board rests flush on the spacer. The heatsink must not obstruct the seating surface.
- Replace and tighten the retaining screw without overtightening it.
- Refit the expansion-slot cover and the outer cover, then reinstall the base and reconnect the cables.
- Power on the PS5. If the slot cover or exterior cover does not close normally, switch off, disconnect the console and recheck the assembled cooling dimensions.
Do not improvise a different orientation for the CFI-1000 cover. Sony’s instructions for this group specify the PS-logo-down position and the power-button-facing-you arrangement.
How do I install an SSD in a CFI-2000 or CFI-7000 PS5?
- Power the cooled console off, disconnect it and follow Sony’s triangle-cover directions for the exact CFI-2000 or CFI-7000 model.
- Remove the expansion-slot cover.
- Reposition the slot’s screw and spacer to the groove corresponding to the SSD’s length.
- Align the SSD notch with the connector and insert the board diagonally and completely.
- Tilt the SSD down onto the spacer and secure it with the screw.
- Reattach the expansion-slot cover and the triangle cover, then reinstall the feet and reconnect all cables.
- Switch on the PS5 only after the covers are secured.
The exterior-cover method for these newer model groups is different from the CFI-1000 procedure. Do not apply the older console’s orientation or removal motion to a CFI-2000 or CFI-7000.

What happens the first time the PS5 sees the SSD?
The PS5 prompts you to format a newly installed drive before it can be used. Formatting erases everything already on that SSD, so copy off any files you need before installation. Follow the on-screen format prompt and do not interrupt the process by turning off the console or disconnecting power.

Reformatting is not required when moving an existing M.2 SSD between PS5 consoles, according to Sony’s support information. Sign in to the same account on the destination console to access the games stored on that drive.
How do I move installed games to the M.2 SSD?
Use the PS5’s Game Library menu; moving the installation files does not require downloading the game again. You can move one title or select several at once.
- Open Game Library.
- Highlight the game you want to transfer.
- Press the Options button on the controller.
- Choose Move Games and Apps.
- Tick the other games or apps you want to transfer, if applicable.
- If a USB extended-storage drive is connected, choose Movable to M.2 SSD Storage so the destination is explicit.
- Select Move and wait for the transfer to finish before disconnecting storage or powering down.
To review what is on the expansion drive, go to Settings > Storage > M.2 SSD Storage. The same screen shows free capacity and lets you manage moved content.

How do I make the M.2 SSD the default location for new games?
Set the destination before downloading more titles: open Settings > Storage > Installation Location, then select the M.2 SSD as the location for future installations. This setting controls where new compatible downloads are installed; it does not automatically relocate games that are already on internal storage.
Can I play PS5 games from the M.2 SSD?
Yes. A correctly installed and formatted M.2 SSD is playable storage for both PS5 and PS4 games. A PS5 game stored on USB extended storage is different: USB can hold the files, but the title must be copied back to the console’s internal storage or a suitable M.2 SSD before it can run. PS4 games can run directly from compatible USB extended storage.
The M.2 drive expands playable capacity, but it does not promise faster loading than the internal SSD. Sony specifically cautions that even a drive faster than its recommended read figure may not deliver identical game performance.
Do game saves move when I move a game?
No. The Move Games and Apps command transfers the installed game files, not the PS5 or PS4 save data. Sony identifies game data as supported on M.2 storage but does not list saved data as being moved there by this operation. Continue managing saves through the PS5’s normal save-data and backup controls.
What should I do if a game on the M.2 SSD misbehaves?
First let any active installation finish and pause other downloads. Sony’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends moving the affected game back to internal storage if the problem continues.

- The console does not detect the SSD: power off completely, unplug it, open the bay again and reseat the board. Check the spacer groove and confirm that the SSD is a supported NVMe Key M model.
- The format prompt never appears: inspect Settings > Storage > M.2 SSD Storage. If no drive is shown, reseat it rather than repeatedly restarting the console.
- The slot cover will not close: remove the SSD and measure the complete cooling assembly. A bare board can fit while its heatsink exceeds Sony’s clearance limits.
- A transfer stops or fails: leave the console powered, pause downloads and retry after any disc installation has completed. Verify that the destination has enough free space.
- A PS5 title on USB will not launch: move or copy it to internal storage or the M.2 SSD; USB storage alone is not a launch location for PS5 games.
Is USB extended storage a substitute for an M.2 SSD?
USB extended storage is a useful lower-cost archive and a practical home for PS4 games, but it is not equivalent for PS5 play. It can store PS5 installation files so you do not have to redownload them, yet those files must return to internal or M.2 storage whenever you want to play the PS5 title.
Can installing an M.2 SSD affect the PS5 warranty?
Sony’s US FAQ says that properly installing a compliant drive generally should not affect manufacturer warranty coverage, while damage caused by improper installation may be excluded. That is a qualification for Sony’s US guidance, not a universal warranty promise in every country. Use the correct model-specific procedure and stop if a cover or screw does not fit normally.

Either approach can work if the final assembly meets Sony’s dimensions. A bare SSD requires a PS5-fitting cooling solution; a drive with a built-in heatsink reduces that assembly step but still needs an individual fit check. Compare the interface, capacity, board length, sequential-read specification, cooling design and assembled measurements before buying, and do not stack an additional cooler on an integrated one.
