Updating a jailbroken PS5 can remove access to the exploit that made homebrew possible, but it does not automatically mean the console is permanently bricked or that every file is erased. The outcome depends on the exact exploit, the firmware already installed, the version Sony’s updater installs, and whether you choose a normal update or a full system-software reinstallation. As checked on October 30, 2026, the Relapse exploit README lists firmware 7.00 through 13.60, while Sony’s US release history lists 26.07-14.20.00 as the newest first-listed version. Before changing anything, preserve accessible data, verify exploit compatibility, and use Sony’s least-destructive recovery option if the update fails.
What happens when you update a jailbroken PS5?
A normal official update replaces system software and may close the vulnerability used by a particular jailbreak. If the installed firmware is outside that exploit’s supported range, the jailbreak may stop working after the restart. That is an exploit-compatibility problem, not proof that the hardware has been destroyed.

Sony’s US system-software license also warns that updates can include security patches, prevent unauthorized content or hardware, change settings, remove functionality, and in some circumstances cause data loss. Some applications and content may require a newer system version. The practical choice is therefore between retaining access to a specific exploit and gaining Sony’s current security fixes, application compatibility, and online-service requirements.
An exploit can also hang or panic the console. A failed official update, an exploit crash, and a deliberate system-software reinstall are different events. Calling all of them a “brick” makes it harder to choose the correct recovery step.

How does the firmware version determine whether the jailbreak survives?
Jailbreak support is tied to both the exploit and the firmware, not to the PS5 model name alone. Relapse’s maintainer states in the developer README: “Supported firmware: 7.00 through 13.60.” That range applies to Relapse; it is not a universal compatibility chart for every exploit, payload, homebrew application, or future release.
Relapse’s documented range
If the console is running a Relapse-supported version, installing a newer Sony release can move it beyond the documented range. Whether another exploit works afterward is not established by Relapse’s README, so do not treat its range as evidence that all jailbreak methods fail—or continue to work—on every later firmware.

Sony’s current release reference
When checked on October 30, 2026, Sony’s US release-history page listed 26.07-14.20.00 first, with 26.06-14.10.00 immediately before it. Sony describes security fixes for 14.10. A console updated to one of these releases may no longer match an older exploit’s requirements, but the available sources do not establish that every possible exploit is blocked on every later release.
Check before accepting an update
Record the exact version shown under Settings, then read the current compatibility notes for the specific exploit and payload you use. A supported-version statement does not certify add-ons built by different developers. If preserving homebrew is your priority, do not approve an update until you understand the consequence for that exact software combination.
What can be lost or damaged by an update?
The main risk is losing exploit access, but several other outcomes need separate treatment.

Prepare while the home screen and Settings app still work. The safest sequence is to document the current state, make a local backup, verify cloud saves separately, and only then decide whether to update.
- Write down the installed firmware. Open Settings and record the complete system-software version, not just the major number. Save notes about the exploit, payload, and any version-specific homebrew you depend on.
- Check the exact exploit documentation. Compare your version with the maintainer’s current compatibility information. Do not assume that a payload remains compatible merely because the exploit itself is listed.
- Create a console backup if possible. Use Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Back Up Your PS5. Sony supports FAT32 and exFAT backup drives for this workflow.
- Use the correct kind of USB drive. A backup drive is not the same as PS5 USB extended storage. Sony’s extended-storage format cannot be used for the console-backup procedure. Games and applications installed on extended USB storage or an M.2 SSD are not included in the console backup, and trophies are excluded.
- Verify cloud saves separately. PlayStation Plus cloud storage is an additional route for eligible saved data, not a replacement for the full console backup. Sony lists limits of 100 GB for PS5 saved data and 100 GB for PS4 saved data; the publication year for those figures is not specified. Check that each important game has actually synchronized.
- Review automatic-update settings. Sony says automatic cloud synchronization requires automatic updates to be enabled. That setting can conflict with a deliberate decision to remain on an exploit-compatible firmware, so check it before leaving the console unattended.
- Do not proceed if the only copy of important data is local. If the console cannot reach the backup workflow, there is no guarantee that a later repair or reinstall can recover an earlier unsaved state.
Which Safe Mode option should you choose?
Safe Mode options are not interchangeable. Start with the least destructive documented action that matches the symptom, and back up accessible data before any choice that erases user content.
| Safe Mode option | Effect on user data | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Restart PS5 | Does not intentionally erase data | The console entered Safe Mode after a temporary fault and can restart normally |
| Repair Console Storage | Non-erasing | Storage-related startup problems; Sony documents this as a repair step |
| Clear Cache and Rebuild Database | Designed for system-maintenance problems; review Sony’s warning screen before confirming | Persistent menu or database behavior after less invasive steps |
| Update System Software | Installs system software; not a factory reset by itself | The update is incomplete, unavailable through the normal menu, or needs a USB package |
| Restore Default Settings | Sony says stored games, applications, captures, and saves remain | Settings corruption when you need to preserve listed content |
| Reset PS5 | Deletes user data | A full reset is necessary and a backup exists |
| Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) | Deletes user data and removes the system software before reinstalling it | Last-resort software recovery after other documented steps fail |
These labels describe Sony’s US Safe Mode guidance. Read the on-screen warning for the exact console state before confirming, especially when choosing either reset option.
How do you install Sony’s manual update from a USB drive?
Use this procedure when the normal updater cannot complete. You need a computer, a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, and approximately 1.1 GB of free space for Sony’s update file.

- Format the USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT. Formatting removes files already on that drive.
- Create a folder named
PS5in the drive’s root, then create anUPDATEfolder inside it. - Download Sony’s official update file and save it as
PS5UPDATE.PUPinsidePS5/UPDATE. Use Sony’s file, not an unofficial mirror. - Turn off the PS5 completely. Hold the power button until you hear the second beep to start Safe Mode.
- Connect the controller with a USB cable, press the PS button, and choose Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device.
- If the console does not recognize the package, check the drive format, the uppercase folder names, the exact filename, and the folder nesting. A file placed beside
UPDATE, or named with an extra extension, will not match Sony’s required layout.
This process installs an update package; it is not the same as selecting Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software). If the update repeatedly fails, stop before choosing an erasing option and preserve data if the home screen becomes available.
When is a full system-software reinstallation necessary?
Reinstallation is a last resort for severe software corruption or a console that cannot recover through ordinary updating. Sony provides a separate reinstallation download and warns unequivocally that reinstalling the system software deletes all data on the PS5.
- On a computer, format a USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT.
- Create
PS5/UPDATEin the drive’s root. - Download Sony’s separate reinstallation file and save it as
PS5UPDATE.PUPin that folder. Do not substitute the smaller update file. - Ensure approximately 1.2 GB of free space is available for the reinstallation procedure.
- Start Safe Mode by holding the power button until the second beep, connect the controller by USB, and select Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software).
- Confirm only after accepting the deletion warning. If reinstallation fails, Sony advises contacting support rather than repeatedly using unverified firmware packages.
The reinstallation can make the console bootable again, but it cannot be promised to restore a previous jailbreak, recover files that were never backed up, or erase every historical trace of modification.
How do you restore a backup after recovery?
Sony requires the installed system software to be the same version or newer than the version used when the backup was created. Restoring a console backup erases data currently on the PS5 before writing the backup, so do not restore over newer saves without checking which copy is authoritative.
After restoration, Console Sharing and Offline Play are disabled until you enable them again. A backup cannot be promised when the damaged console never reached the backup process and no earlier backup exists. Cloud storage may help with eligible saves, but it does not recreate captures, settings, or every application installation included in a local workflow.

Can you downgrade to recover the old jailbreak?
Sony’s US license prohibits reinstalling earlier system-software versions and obtaining firmware outside Sony’s authorized distribution methods. An independent tool author may claim that an older-version installation method exists through a third-party mirror, but that is not Sony’s endorsed recovery procedure or a tested guarantee.
Do not treat a USB reinstall as a safe or reliable downgrade path. Installing an unauthorized image can create additional compatibility, data-loss, service, and legal risks, and it does not establish that the original exploit will work again.
What do updates mean for bans, repairs, and warranty coverage?
Sony warns that modified consoles may operate improperly, reject official update data, or be affected in warranty and repair handling. Its support policy allows account suspension for violations and, for serious breaches, console suspension. An account suspension and a console suspension restrict different features.
Sony does not state that every jailbroken console is automatically suspended. It also does not promise that resetting or reinstalling reverses an existing suspension or makes previous activity irrelevant. A repaired or reformatted console therefore should not be described as ban-proof or guaranteed to receive service.
What is the least-risk recovery decision?
Use this order when deciding what to do:
- Home screen works, no urgent need to update: record firmware, verify exploit compatibility, and make a local backup before changing anything.
- Home screen works, but you want Sony’s current software: accept that the particular jailbreak may stop working, then use the normal official update path.
- Update is stuck: inspect Downloads/Uploads and retry through Sony’s documented interface before entering Safe Mode.
- Safe Mode appears: try Restart PS5, Repair Console Storage, or the relevant non-erasing maintenance option before a reset.
- Manual update is required: use Sony’s update file, exact USB folder names, and the Update System Software menu.
- System software is unrecoverable: use the separate reinstallation file only after accepting complete data deletion and the loss of the previous software state.
This sequence protects the most valuable choice first: whether your data and your current exploit access are still recoverable before an irreversible action.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will a factory reset remove all evidence that a PS5 was modified?
A reset removes user data, but the available Sony guidance does not promise that it erases every historical trace of modification or guarantees normal service treatment. It should be viewed as a data-destructive recovery step, not as a clean-service-record procedure.
Can I keep using PlayStation services without installing the newest firmware?
Some applications or content may require a system update, and account-dependent services can impose their own software requirements. Sony’s suspension policy is separate from the updater, so remaining on older software does not guarantee access or immunity from enforcement.

What if my backup drive is recognized as extended storage instead?
Sony uses different formats and workflows for PS5 USB extended storage and a console backup. A drive configured for extended storage cannot be used for the Back Up Your PS5 process until it is reformatted for the backup workflow, which deletes its existing contents.
Does restoring a console backup preserve newer files already on the PS5?
No. Sony’s restore process erases data currently on the console before applying the backup. Compare dates and copy any newer accessible files before starting, because the older backup becomes the restored state.
