Short answer: Public community documentation reports jailbreak routes for PS5 system software up to version 13.60, with different entry points depending on firmware. It reports no public route for firmware 14.00 or newer as of October 13, 2026. The reported Relapse route covers original, Slim and Pro consoles, but route availability does not prove that every homebrew payload works, and no reliable success rate has been published.
What determines whether a PS5 can be jailbroken?
PS5 jailbreak compatibility is primarily a firmware question, not a simple model question. The installed system-software version determines which publicly documented entry point and exploit chain may be available. Hardware still matters for some routes, especially those that use the Blu-ray drive, but a compatible model on an unsupported firmware remains unsupported.

The compatibility information available for this article is a dated community snapshot from October 13, 2026. It reports routes through firmware 13.60 and no public route for 14.00 and newer. Sony releases updates and community routes can change, so treat the matrix as a status report rather than a permanent capability guarantee.

“A route exists” also has a narrower meaning than “the console can do everything associated with homebrew.” An entry point may reach a userland exploit, a kernel exploit or a broader jailbreak chain. Individual payloads, Linux configurations, game modifications and other applications can have their own firmware and stability requirements.

How to check your PS5 firmware before doing anything else
Read the exact installed version before comparing your console with a compatibility table. On the PS5, open:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Open System Software.
- Choose Console Information.
- Record the complete system-software version shown on screen.
Do not rely on the purchase date, the model name printed on the box or a remembered update number. A console that was manufactured earlier may have been updated before sale, and two consoles with the same physical design can be on different firmware.
Once you have the number, compare it with current route documentation. Avoid updating first and checking later: an update can move the console beyond a currently documented range, and the available material does not establish a downgrade method. Sony’s US system-software license specifically prohibits reinstalling earlier software versions (“downgrading”), subject to the law that applies in your jurisdiction.
Reported PS5 jailbreak routes by firmware
The following table reflects the community guide’s reported ranges. These are not official Sony compatibility guarantees, and the ranges should not be interpreted as measured reliability figures.
| Reported firmware range | Entry point and route | Important dependency or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 1.00–5.50 | Browser to UMTX | Browser-based route reported for this range; the guide does not provide a controlled success rate. |
| 4.03–10.01 | YouTube app using Lapse | Requires the relevant application entry point and matching firmware. |
| 9.00–12.40 | YouTube app using P2JB | The guide reports reports as high as 12.70; that higher figure is not presented as a uniform range or independently measured result. |
| Up to 7.61 | Blu-ray using UMTX2 | Requires a PS5 with a disc drive and a burned Blu-ray. |
| Up to 12.00 | Blu-ray using Poopsploit | Requires a PS5 with a disc drive and a burned Blu-ray. |
| 7.00–13.60 | Browser to Relapse | The guide reports this as the broadest listed range and says it includes original, Slim and Pro models. |
| 14.00 and newer | No public route reported | Status in the October 13, 2026 snapshot; future disclosures could change it. |
The table combines entry points with the underlying exploit work. Those are related but not interchangeable terms. For example, UMTX documentation describes a technical capability that is more limited than a complete consumer-facing jailbreak, while Relapse is described by the community guide as a route reaching through 13.60.
Can my PS5 be jailbroken on this firmware?
Firmware 13.60 or lower
If your console is on a version covered by one of the listed ranges, a public route is reported for that version. Confirm the exact entry point, any application or disc requirement, and whether the payload you want supports that firmware. The existence of a route does not establish that every homebrew application, Linux setup or feature will run.
Firmware 14.00 or newer
The October 2026 community status reports no public route for 14.00 and later. That is not proof that a future route is impossible; it means the cited documentation did not report one at the time of the snapshot. Do not assume that a route for 13.60 can be transferred to 14.00.
Unknown, partially reported or borderline versions
Some ranges overlap, and one route is described as having reports as high as 12.70 even though its principal table range ends at 12.40. Treat such wording as a qualification, not permission to generalize the highest anecdotal report to every console. Look for documentation that names your exact firmware and route rather than relying on a neighboring version.
Which PS5 models can run homebrew?
The community guide says the Relapse route covers every model, including the original launch design, Slim systems and Pro systems. That is broad model coverage, but it is not a controlled compatibility or reliability study across every hardware revision, region or production batch.

For Blu-ray routes, the physical drive is a specific requirement because the route uses a burned disc. A digital-only console without a disc drive cannot satisfy that dependency. The guide does not state that a drive is required for the browser or application-based routes, so do not apply the Blu-ray requirement to every route in the table.
Model coverage and homebrew capability are separate questions. A console can be in the reported model family and still be on firmware with no public route. Conversely, a firmware-compatible console may run one payload but not another because the payload has additional kernel, memory or application requirements.

PS5Dev’s UMTX project documentation describes read/write access but not code execution under the protections it discusses. It says kernel text pages are execute-only and that the approach cannot read kernel text pointers without causing a panic. It also describes hypervisor kernel write protection that prevents installing kernel patches or hooks, alongside control-flow-integrity and supervisor protections.
The same documentation says its route needs a new WebKit exploit on firmware 6.00 and later. This is a limitation of that project and chain, not a statement that every PS5 exploit has the same ceiling. A technical primitive that provides read/write access should not automatically be described as a complete jailbreak or as proof that commercial games, system services or all homebrew can be modified.
The broader community guide combines different entry points with different underlying work. When evaluating a claim, ask which layer it describes: browser or application entry, userland access, kernel access, payload loading or a persistent modification. Those layers have different capabilities and failure modes.
Are PS5 jailbreaks permanent?
The listed jailbreaks are described as tethered: a reboot or full power-off removes the active state, so the route must be run again. This is materially different from a permanent modification stored through a restart. It means a crash, a battery-backed power interruption, a system update or routine maintenance can return the console to its unmodified running state until the entry process is repeated.
Tethered does not mean risk-free. Re-running an entry point can fail, a payload can be incompatible with a particular version, and a user can accidentally update while trying to restore normal operation. Keep the firmware version recorded and understand the route’s recovery process before treating the console as a daily-use system.
What happens if you update the PS5?
Sony’s support guidance recommends installing current updates for security and proper functioning and warns that some applications or content may require an update. An update can therefore improve official compatibility while removing access to a community route that depended on an older firmware version.
Sony also warns that using unofficial update data or methods, or installing software on an altered or modified console, may prevent proper operation and may affect warranty and repair services. Reinstalling system software deletes console data. These are Sony’s platform and service warnings; they do not measure how often a particular exploit fails.

- Before updating: record the current firmware and decide whether official games, online services and support are more important to you than preserving a reported route.
- After updating: do not assume a previous exploit still works. Recheck route documentation for the new exact version.
- If reinstalling system software: back up data first because Sony says the reinstall process deletes console data.
Legal, warranty and service considerations
Sony’s US PS5 System Software License Agreement says users may not use unauthorized, illegal, counterfeit or modified hardware or software with system software; use tools to bypass, disable or circumvent PS5 encryption, security or authentication; reinstall earlier system-software versions; or modify and reverse engineer system software in the prohibited ways described by the agreement. The agreement says its restrictions apply to the greatest extent permitted by the law in the user’s jurisdiction, so there is no single worldwide legal conclusion for every reader.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThose contractual restrictions are separate from the technical question of whether a route exists. A technically available exploit can still create warranty, repair-service or account risks. Sony’s UK update guidance specifically links unofficial update methods and altered consoles with possible operating problems and effects on warranty and repair services.
Do not confuse Sony’s security-reporting programs, including the PlayStation Bug Bounty, with approval for consumer circumvention. Researchers who discover vulnerabilities can use Sony-managed disclosure channels; that is an official reporting path, not a homebrew license.
Physical media requirements for Blu-ray routes
The Blu-ray entries in the compatibility table require both a disc drive and a burned Blu-ray. Recordable BD-R media is therefore a route-specific consumable, not a universal jailbreak product. A disc cannot overcome incompatible firmware, missing hardware or the absence of a working exploit chain.
Digital-only PS5 owners should focus on routes that use a browser or application entry point if their exact firmware is covered. Do not buy media until documentation confirms that your firmware and model use the Blu-ray route; the cited material does not establish that every disc drive revision behaves identically.

The sources reviewed do not provide a controlled success rate broken down by firmware, hardware revision or route. Online anecdotes can be useful for spotting a new failure mode, but they are not a denominator-based measurement. Results can vary with firmware, browser or application state, network conditions, storage state, timing and the payload being launched.
Use evidence that names the exact version and route, and distinguish “worked once” from “reliable after repeated cold boots.” Until a reproducible study publishes those measurements, any single percentage would be speculation.
A safe compatibility decision process
- Identify the exact firmware: use Settings > System > System Software > Console Information.
- Freeze the decision point: do not update while you are checking whether the current version is covered.
- Match the route: verify whether your version is listed for browser, YouTube app or Blu-ray entry, and check dependencies such as a disc drive.
- Match the capability: confirm that the documentation supports the specific homebrew payload or feature you want, rather than assuming a general jailbreak provides it.
- Plan for a reboot: expect a tethered route to require another run after restart or full power-off.
- Weigh official-use costs: consider updates, online features, warranty and repair implications before altering normal use.
- Recheck status: community compatibility changes, so use current route documentation immediately before attempting anything.
Can I jailbreak a PS5 on the latest firmware?
There is no universal “latest firmware” answer because Sony’s latest release changes over time and the public route can lag behind it. In the October 13, 2026 snapshot used here, firmware 14.00 had been released in mid-September and the reported public ceiling was 13.60. Therefore, a PS5 that has installed 14.00 or any newer version was not reported as publicly jailbreakable in that snapshot.
Check the version shown on your own console and then check current route documentation. Never infer compatibility from a headline that says a jailbreak works “on PS5” without a firmware number.
Bottom line for prospective homebrew users
As of October 13, 2026, the reported community position is: routes exist through PS5 firmware 13.60, Relapse is reported across original, Slim and Pro models, Blu-ray routes need a disc drive and burned disc, and no public route is reported for 14.00 or newer. The state is tethered rather than permanent, UMTX’s documented capabilities are narrower than a full jailbreak, and no controlled reliability statistic supports promising a particular success rate. Check your exact firmware first, then evaluate the route’s entry point, payload support and the consequences of giving up official update and service options.
