Yes, but an external SSD is storage and transfer space—not a launch drive for PS5 games. PlayStation 5 games can be moved to compatible USB extended storage, freeing the console’s internal space without downloading them again. When you want to play one, you must copy it back to the PS5’s internal storage or to a compatible internal M.2 NVMe SSD. PS4 games are different: they can be played directly from compatible USB extended storage.
For a USB drive, Sony specifies SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or faster, a capacity of at least 250 GB and no more than 8 TB. If your priority is keeping PS5 games installed and playable without a copy-back step, an internal M.2 SSD is the appropriate expansion. The sections below explain the limits, setup process, safety rules and which option fits each use.

Can you install PS5 games on an external SSD?
You can install or move PS5 game data to a compatible external SSD after formatting it as USB extended storage. The important distinction is what “install” means: the console can keep the game there, but the game cannot run from that USB drive. Sony’s USB extended-storage guidance explicitly says PS5 games cannot be played directly from USB extended storage.
The drive therefore works as an archive. Move a completed or less frequently played PS5 title to it, reclaim the internal space, and copy the title back when you are ready to play. The copy-back operation is normally much more convenient than downloading a large game again, but it is still an extra step every time you rotate a PS5 title.

PS4 games use the drive differently. A compatible PS4 title can remain on USB extended storage and launch from there, so you can choose the external drive as the installation location for PS4 games if you want to preserve the PS5’s internal space.
What can an external SSD do on a PS5?
Store PS5 games without redownloading
USB extended storage is useful when the internal console drive is full but you do not want to delete games permanently. Move titles you have finished, seasonal games you play occasionally or large games you may return to later. The game remains associated with your library; the USB drive holds its installed data for a later transfer.

This approach is especially practical for a rotating library. You can keep several large PS5 installations on the external drive and transfer only the one you need. It does not, however, turn the USB SSD into a second PS5 game drive: the active copy must be on internal console storage or a compatible internal M.2 SSD.
Play PS4 games directly
PS4 games are the exception to the launch restriction. Once a compatible USB drive is formatted as extended storage, PS4 games stored there can be played without moving them to the internal drive. This makes an external SSD a combined archive for PS5 games and a direct-play library for PS4 games.
Connect it directly, not through a hub
Sony’s requirements call for the drive to connect directly to the PS5. A USB hub cannot be used for PS5 extended storage, and Sony does not guarantee that every USB storage device will work even when its headline capacity appears suitable. Use a port and cable that support the required SuperSpeed USB specification, and treat the console’s compatibility check as the final authority.

How do you set up an external SSD for PS5 games?
Back up anything important on the drive first. Formatting a new drive as USB extended storage erases the data already on it. Then use this workflow:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Connect the drive directly to the PS5. Do not insert it through a USB hub. Use a SuperSpeed USB connection rated at 5 Gbps or faster.
- Format it as USB extended storage. The PS5 offers the format option when it detects an eligible, unformatted drive. Confirm only after checking that the drive contains no files you need, because formatting deletes them.
- Let the console finish the format. Do not unplug the drive during this process. Once complete, the drive appears as USB extended storage in the console’s storage settings.
- Move PS5 games to the drive. In Game Library, highlight the installed title, press the Options button, choose Move Games and Apps, select the external drive as the destination and confirm. The original internal copy is transferred rather than duplicated, so the internal space is released when the move completes.
- Copy a PS5 game back before playing. Highlight the game in Game Library, press Options, choose Move Games and Apps and select console storage or the installed M.2 SSD as the destination. Start the game after the transfer finishes; a PS5 title kept only on USB extended storage cannot launch.
- Choose the external drive for PS4 installations if desired. In the PS5 storage settings, set USB extended storage as the installation location for PS4 games. Those games can stay there while you play them.
- Stop using the drive before disconnecting it. Use the PS5’s storage controls to stop or safely eject USB extended storage before removing the cable. Disconnecting while data is being read or written can cause corruption, data loss or damage.
Moving a game is not the same as copying a personal save. Save data is managed separately by the PS5, while the external drive contains the game and application files needed to reinstall or launch the title according to the rules above.
What are the PS5 external USB storage limits?
Sony’s current USB extended-storage guidance sets the boundaries below:
| Requirement | USB extended-storage rule |
|---|---|
| Connection speed | SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or later |
| Capacity | At least 250 GB and no more than 8 TB |
| Connection method | Direct connection to the PS5; USB hubs are not supported |
| Simultaneous drives | Two or more USB extended-storage drives cannot be used at the same time |
| Compatibility | Not every device is guaranteed to work; meeting the capacity and speed figures does not replace the console’s compatibility check |
The 8 TB figure is the maximum Sony states for USB extended storage on PS5 consoles. A drive smaller than 250 GB cannot be formatted for this purpose, even if it has enough free space for a particular game. The limit concerns the USB extended-storage feature; it is separate from the capacity rules for an internal M.2 SSD.
Is an internal M.2 SSD better for playing PS5 games?
Yes, when your goal is to keep PS5 games installed and launch them from expanded storage. Sony says a correctly installed M.2 SSD can be used to download, copy and launch both PS5 and PS4 games. Unlike an external USB SSD, it does not require you to transfer a PS5 title back to the console before starting it.

The trade-off is installation and compatibility work. An M.2 drive must meet the requirements for your exact PS5 model, including PCIe Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe support, physical dimensions and adequate heat dissipation. Sony’s cited safety documentation lists 250 GB to 4 TB for the documented console generation, but specifications and supported models can vary; check the current PlayStation support information for your console before buying.
External USB SSD versus internal M.2 SSD
| Decision point | External USB SSD | Internal M.2 NVMe SSD |
|---|---|---|
| Launch PS5 games | No. Copy the game to console or M.2 storage first. | Yes, when the drive meets Sony’s requirements. |
| Launch PS4 games | Yes, directly from USB extended storage. | Yes. |
| Setup | Plug in, format and choose a move or install location. | Open the expansion bay, fit the drive and provide the required heat dissipation. |
| Everyday convenience | Portable and easy to rotate, but PS5 games need a copy-back step. | Games remain installed and playable without moving them first. |
| Best role | Archive, transport and a large PS4 library. | Permanent playable expansion for PS5 and PS4 games. |
An M.2 SSD is not a substitute for a simple archive if you regularly move a drive between locations or consoles. Conversely, an external SSD is not a way to avoid opening the console when direct PS5 playback is the requirement.
Which storage option should you choose?
Choose an external SSD when archiving matters most
- You want to keep a large collection available without redownloading every PS5 game.
- You are comfortable copying a PS5 title back before playing it.
- You also have many PS4 games and want to launch them directly from the same USB drive.
- You prefer a plug-in setup and do not want to open the PS5’s expansion bay.
Choose an internal M.2 SSD when direct PS5 play matters most
- You want additional PS5 games to behave like internal installations.
- You switch among several PS5 titles and do not want to wait for a transfer each time.
- You can verify PCIe Gen4x4 compatibility, physical clearance and heat dissipation for your exact console model.
- You are prepared to install the drive inside the console rather than simply connecting a cable.
Use both when your library has two different workloads
The two expansion types are complementary. An internal M.2 SSD can hold the PS5 games you play regularly, while a USB SSD can archive less frequently used PS5 installations and host PS4 games for direct play. That arrangement avoids deleting large downloads while reserving the faster, always-ready space for current PS5 titles.
Does a faster external SSD guarantee shorter loading?
No universal SSD-versus-HDD loading figure is established by Sony’s current support material. Sony notes that a device with a faster specification may produce shorter load times for PS4 games stored on the external drive, but it does not publish one result that applies to every SSD, HDD, game and USB connection. The PS5-game launch restriction remains unchanged regardless of how fast the external drive is.
For that reason, choose an external SSD primarily for its portability, noise, responsiveness and archive workflow—not on the assumption that it will make PS5 games playable directly from USB.

What happens to external and M.2 games in a PS5 backup?
Games and apps stored on USB extended storage or on an internal M.2 SSD are not included in a normal PS5 console backup. After restoring the console, reconnect the USB storage device or reinstall the M.2 drive so the system can access those installations. Keep that distinction in mind when planning a reset, repair or console migration: backing up settings and saved data does not create a second copy of the game files on expanded storage.

The PS5 will not format the drive
Confirm that the drive is at least 250 GB, uses a SuperSpeed USB connection rated at 5 Gbps or later and is connected directly rather than through a hub. Sony does not guarantee every device, so a drive that meets the published numbers can still be incompatible with a particular console or enclosure.
A PS5 game appears in the library but will not start
Check where the game is installed. If its files are on USB extended storage, move the title to console storage or to the compatible internal M.2 SSD using Game Library, Options and Move Games and Apps. The USB copy is an archive; it is not a launchable PS5 installation.
The drive was unplugged and now reports an error
Improper removal can corrupt data. Reconnect the drive directly, allow the PS5 to recognize it and use the console’s stop or safely-remove control before disconnecting it again. If the drive still fails, avoid formatting immediately because formatting erases the stored game files and any other data on the device.
The M.2 SSD is not recognized
Recheck the exact PS5 model’s requirements: PCIe Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe interface, supported capacity, physical dimensions and heat-dissipation clearance. A drive can fit the slot yet fail the console’s electrical, size or thermal requirements.

Frequently asked questions
Can one external SSD hold both PS5 and PS4 games?
Yes. The same USB extended-storage drive can archive PS5 game data and hold PS4 installations for direct play. The two types still follow different launch rules: PS4 games can run from the drive, while PS5 games must be transferred back to console or M.2 storage first.
Does an external SSD need to be empty before you use it with a PS5?
It does not need to be physically empty, but formatting it as USB extended storage deletes everything already on it. Copy personal files to another location before formatting, then treat the newly formatted drive as dedicated PS5 extended storage.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I use a USB hub if the drive has its own power supply?
No. Sony’s PS5 extended-storage instructions require a direct connection and do not support using a USB hub, regardless of whether the hub or drive has separate power. Connect the storage device straight to a compatible PS5 USB port.
Is an external SSD the cheapest way to expand playable PS5 storage?
No external USB drive can provide direct PS5 playback, so price alone does not make it equivalent to an internal M.2 SSD. If “playable” means launching PS5 games without moving them, compare only compatible internal M.2 options; use USB storage when an archive and transfer workflow meets your needs.
