Why can’t a PS5 game launch from USB storage?
PS5 games are designed to run from the console’s internal storage architecture or from a compatible M.2 expansion drive installed inside the console. USB extended storage is supported for keeping the installation, but it is not an approved launch location for PS5 software.
This is why a game shown in your library may offer Copy rather than Play after you move it to USB. The installation is still present, so copying it back avoids downloading or reinstalling the game from a disc. Can PS4 games play directly from an external drive on PS5?
Yes. “You can play PS4 games directly from USB extended storage,” Sony states in its official support guidance. Install or move PS4 games to the formatted USB drive, then launch them without copying them to the internal SSD first.
This exception is the reason an external drive can still be valuable even if your library is mostly current-generation software: it can provide a large PS4 library that remains playable while reserving internal space for PS5 titles.
What should I check if the PS5 does not recognize the drive?
