Choose the PS5 with a disc drive if you own PS4 or PS5 discs, expect to buy physical games released before 2028, or want the option to use compatible discs later. Choose the Digital Edition if you are comfortable buying and downloading everything, can prepare the console before an outage, and do not need disc playback. Both models can play eligible purchased downloads offline after you enable Console Sharing and Offline Play; a disc drive is not an offline/online switch. Neither model guarantees that every game will work without updates, downloads or a publisher’s servers.
Sony’s July 1, 2026 announcement also changes the long-term calculation: physical discs for new PlayStation games are scheduled to stop starting in January 2028, while games already released or scheduled for disc release before then are not affected. A drive therefore protects access to an existing and pre-2028 physical library, not a guarantee of new-release discs after the cutoff.

What is the real difference between the two PS5 editions?
The disc-equipped PS5 adds a physical Blu-ray drive to the same basic PS5 platform. It can install and run compatible PS5 and PS4 game discs, and it can also buy and download digital games. The Digital Edition has no built-in drive, so its games are obtained from the PlayStation Store or another digital entitlement tied to the account.

This is primarily a media and licensing choice. It is not a division between an online console and an offline console: either model can use Sony’s Console Sharing and Offline Play feature for eligible purchased downloads once preparation is complete.
What the disc model can do
- Read supported PS5 game discs.
- Read supported PS4 game discs through backward compatibility.
- Install digital purchases and play eligible downloads.
- Play supported Blu-ray and DVD movie formats listed for the drive.
What the Digital Edition cannot do by itself
Without a compatible add-on drive, it cannot read a PS4 or PS5 disc. A disc bought from a shop cannot be converted into a permanent digital entitlement simply by inserting it into another console; the disc remains the proof required by compatible hardware.
Can a PS5 Digital Edition play games without an internet connection?
Yes, but only after the game and its license have been prepared on that particular console. Sony says an enabled PS5 can “Play games and media you’ve purchased and downloaded” while offline. An uninstalled game still needs a connection to download, and a title may impose its own update, account or server requirement.
Prepare digital offline play before an outage
- Sign in on the PS5 you intend to keep offline. Use the account that purchased the game, or the account covered by the console’s sharing arrangement.
- Download the complete game in advance. Do not rely on a license to fetch missing files after the connection is gone.
- Enable the console setting. Open
Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play, then select the option to enable it. - Launch the game while connected. This gives the console an opportunity to validate the purchase and exposes any title-specific setup requirement.
- Test the important mode before disconnecting. A single-player campaign may work while an online multiplayer, cloud-save or live-service mode does not.
Sony permits Console Sharing and Offline Play on one PS5 at a time. If the setting is enabled on another console, change the activation while signed in before expecting a different PS5 to authorize offline use. The feature does not turn a PlayStation Plus catalog entitlement into an independently owned game; access can end when the subscription or catalog availability ends.
Why an offline download can still fail
- A license belongs to the purchasing account, so signing into a different account can produce a lock icon.
- The installation may be incomplete or an update may be required.
- The game may require a publisher server for authentication, seasonal content or multiplayer.
- A subscription may have expired even though its files remain installed.
For a lock icon, Sony’s support guidance is to check the purchasing account, subscription status, Console Sharing activation and restored licenses. These checks address the license; they cannot remove a game’s own server dependency. See Sony’s Console Sharing and Offline Play support page.

Does owning a disc guarantee completely offline play?
No. A disc is a useful access key and often contains installable game data, but it is not a universal certificate that every mode or every future version will work offline. Sony’s quick-start material describes installing data after inserting a disc, while its PS4 compatibility guidance says a supported PS4 disc must be inserted each time and may need an update.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow disc-based play works in practice
- Insert the disc and let the PS5 install the required data.
- Keep the disc available; the console checks for it whenever you start the supported PS4 disc game.
- Apply any update that the title requires while you still have connectivity.
- Check the individual game’s official requirements for activation, multiplayer and other online services.
Sony does not establish that every PS5 disc contains every patch or that every title retains all features after a server shutdown. Treat complete, permanently offline operation as unverified unless the game’s own documentation establishes it. PS3 game discs are not supported by PS5, and adding a drive does not change that compatibility boundary.
What does Sony’s January 2028 disc announcement mean for long-term ownership?
On July 1, 2026, Sid Shuman, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Senior Director of Content Communications, announced that physical disc production for new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will end starting in January 2028. The announcement says: “This transition has no impact on games that already released, or will be releasing, prior to January 2028 in disc format.” The policy is announced but not yet in effect as of October 2026, so current listings and the policy should be rechecked closer to purchase.
The practical effect is a split in the value of a drive:
- Existing collection: A drive remains the straightforward way to use compatible PS4 and PS5 discs you already own.
- Pre-cutoff releases: Games released or scheduled for disc before January 2028 retain the announced physical-disc path.
- New releases after the cutoff: The announcement does not promise a physical edition, so buying a drive cannot create one.
- Resale and availability: No official numerical forecast establishes how many pre-2028 discs will remain available or how their prices will change.
This makes the drive a preservation and access option for a defined library, not insurance against every future change in digital storefronts, licenses or servers.

Can a Digital Edition be upgraded with an official drive?
Only certain models can use Sony’s add-on drive. Sony lists compatibility with the CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 slim Digital Edition consoles and PS5 Pro. The original launch CFI-1000 Digital Edition is not listed, so its owner should not assume a drive can be added.
The compatible add-on also needs an internet connection to pair with the console during setup. After pairing, it can read supported game discs and the specified Blu-ray/DVD movie formats, but it does not make unsupported game generations playable. Verify the CFI number on the console or listing and read the current product page before ordering the accessory: Sony’s official PS5 disc-drive listing.
Which edition is better for different ownership situations?
You already own PS4 or PS5 discs
Buy the disc-equipped PS5 unless every game in the collection has a digital replacement you are willing to repurchase. Supported PS4 discs require insertion at each play session, but the Digital Edition cannot use them without a compatible drive.
You buy used, borrow or resell games
The disc model gives you a physical item that can be lent, traded or resold subject to the game’s license terms and condition. It does not transfer intellectual-property ownership of the software; it supplies the disc required by compatible hardware.

Either model can work for prepared single-player downloads, but the disc model gives you another way to install compatible pre-2028 games. Download and update digital purchases before an outage, enable Console Sharing and Offline Play, and check each title rather than assuming that a disc or download removes server requirements.

You expect to buy only new releases
The Digital Edition may fit a download-only library, especially if you have no need for movies or older discs. However, the January 2028 policy means new physical releases are not guaranteed after that date, so the disc model’s future value is mainly tied to the back catalog and pre-cutoff releases.
You want the smallest storage compromise
Sony’s current US comparison lists 1TB for the disc-equipped configuration and 825GB for the Digital Edition. Those numbers are model-page figures, not a universal rule for every revision; check the exact listing, and remember that installed games, patches and captures consume space.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you preserve games, saves and installed data?
Storage can make an outage or hardware replacement less disruptive, but a backup preserves files rather than creating a perpetual license or proving that a title will run offline.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Use internal or M.2 storage for PS5 games you want ready
Sony says a supported M.2 NVMe SSD can launch PS5 games. USB extended storage can hold PS5 games, but those games must be copied back to playable storage before launch; PS4 games can launch directly from USB extended storage. Follow Sony’s current compatibility and installation requirements rather than buying an arbitrary drive: PS5 M.2 SSD installation guidance.
Back up saves and settings separately
A suitable USB device can back up PS5 saves, games, captures and settings. Backup data is account-linked. Restoring a backup disables Console Sharing and Offline Play, so re-enable that setting on the restored PS5 before relying on offline downloads again.

PS5 saves cannot be copied to USB using the older PS4 save-copy method. Keep that limitation in mind when planning a migration or an outage kit, and do not confuse a local backup with an account-independent game license.
What does “ownership” mean for a PS5 game?
Physical media gives you possession of a disc that compatible hardware can read; it does not transfer Sony’s or a publisher’s intellectual-property rights. Sony’s US PlayStation Network terms describe content as licensed and potentially revocable. A digital purchase is likewise an account-based license, even when the downloaded files run offline on an enabled console.

A disc can preserve access to a compatible pre-2028 release without a store download, but it cannot guarantee patches, online services, a replacement if the disc is damaged, or support on a future incompatible console. A digital download can reduce physical wear and remain convenient, but it depends more directly on the account, local activation and the ability to download the files in the first place. Read the PlayStation Network terms for the governing license language.
What should you check before buying?
- Identify whether your existing games are discs, digital purchases or PlayStation Plus entitlements.
- For a used console, record the exact CFI model, included drive and advertised storage.
- If considering a Digital Edition plus a drive, confirm that it is CFI-2000, CFI-2100 or PS5 Pro; do not apply that compatibility to CFI-1000.
- Check each important game’s official offline, update and server requirements.
- Download and launch important digital games before an outage, with Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled on the intended PS5.
- Keep discs available for supported PS4 titles and expect to insert them every time.
- Plan storage separately: M.2 for launching PS5 games, USB for holding PS5 games and launching PS4 games, and a separate backup device for saves and settings.
- Recheck Sony’s January 2028 physical-release policy and current model listings before a major purchase.
How were these recommendations chosen?
The ranking follows the ownership decisions that matter for this question: access to an existing disc library, preparation for offline digital play, model-specific upgradeability, the limits of disc-based compatibility, storage and backup behavior, and Sony’s announced January 2028 change. It does not assume a price difference, a performance difference, a guaranteed resale value or a universal offline mode where Sony has not established one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a PlayStation Plus game work offline after I download it?
Only while the account remains entitled to that game and the console can validate the entitlement under its offline settings. If the subscription expires or the catalog license changes, installed files do not preserve access by themselves.
Can I play a PS5 disc game without ever installing an update?
Some disc data may install from the disc, but Sony does not establish that every title is complete and fully offline on release media. Check the game’s own requirements and install needed updates while connected.

Does backing up a PS5 game let me play it on another account?
No. Sony describes backup data as account-linked, and a backup does not transfer the underlying license. The purchasing account and the destination console’s sharing and offline settings still govern access.
