A PS4 game running on a PS5 is still the PS4 edition; a separately developed PS5 edition may add improved visuals, faster loading, DualSense features, or 3D Audio. Those benefits—and whether you can upgrade, import your save, or play across editions—depend on the game. Before switching, check the exact title’s upgrade terms and publisher instructions for saves and multiplayer.

These are three configurations, not two labels for the same installation. A PS5 console can run a compatible PS4 game, but that does not turn the game into its PS5 edition.

What is the difference between a PS4 game on PS5 and the PS5 version?
The PS4-on-PS5 option is the PS4 build running through backward compatibility. The PS5 version is a distinct game edition, when the publisher has released one, and can be designed to use PS5-specific capabilities.
Sony says Game Boost can improve performance in select PS4 games, and some PS4 games may load faster on PS5. Neither outcome makes the game a native PS5 release. A PS5 edition can offer features such as enhanced visuals, faster loading, DualSense controller effects, or 3D Audio, but the publisher decides which features a particular game supports.

There is no reliable platform-wide figure for average graphics improvement or frame-rate gain. Do not assume that either edition guarantees 4K resolution, 60 frames per second, ray tracing, or any particular graphics mode. Those details need to come from the publisher’s specifications or the game’s current patch notes.
Will the graphics or frame rate be better?
Possibly, but the answer depends on the game and which version you launch. A PS5 console alone does not guarantee that the PS4 edition will use the graphics modes or frame-rate targets offered by a separate PS5 edition.
When you play the PS4 edition on PS5
The game remains the PS4 version. Sony’s Game Boost benefit applies only to select PS4 games, and the effect is not a universal promise of a particular resolution or frame rate. A game might load faster or benefit from Game Boost, but without title-specific documentation there is no basis to promise a specific improvement.
When you play the PS5 edition
A native PS5 release may include a different resolution or performance mode, higher-detail visuals, ray tracing, or other graphics options. These are possibilities, not a standard package included in every PS5 edition. Look up the exact game’s official feature list and patch notes before choosing an edition for a particular mode.
When comparing two editions, check the same details for both: supported resolution modes, frame-rate targets or caps, graphics settings, and whether features require a particular display or game mode. If the publisher does not state a figure, treat it as unknown rather than inferring it from the console.
Do PS5 editions load faster or add controller and audio features?
A PS5 edition can use features developed for PS5, including faster loading, DualSense functions, and 3D Audio. A PS4 game may also load faster when played on PS5, but that does not mean it has the full feature set of a PS5 release.

A controller feature advertised for one edition should not be assumed to work in the other.
Audio and loading claims also need to be version-specific. If the publisher describes 3D Audio or a particular loading improvement for the PS5 edition, that does not establish that the PS4 edition has the same feature. Conversely, a faster load on a PS5 console does not prove that the game was upgraded to a PS5 build.

What does the upgrade cost, and who qualifies?
There is no single PS4-to-PS5 pricing rule. A publisher may provide a free upgrade, charge for it, or make it available only during a stated period. The store page or in-game offer for the exact title is the authority. Owning a PS4 copy does not, by itself, prove that a PS5 entitlement is included.
Check the edition you purchased as well as the platform on which you purchased it. A digital PS4 purchase can be eligible on either PS5 console model when the title’s offer permits it. A physical copy has extra hardware and region conditions, described below. A PS4 game obtained through PlayStation Plus is not generally entitled to a PS5 upgrade unless the specific offer expressly says so.
Do not pay for an upgrade merely because the PS5 store displays a separate product. Confirm that the account that bought the PS4 game is the account attempting to claim the offer, and read whether the upgrade is permanent, discounted, or time-limited. If an offer expires, the terms shown for that title determine what happens afterward.
If you own a PS4 disc
You need a PS5 console with a disc drive to redeem and use an eligible disc-based PS5 upgrade. The disc must match the country or region of the PlayStation account, and it must remain inserted whenever you play the upgraded PS5 download. Sony’s US support guidance says: “PS4 game discs can’t be used with the PS5 Digital Edition console.”
- Confirm that the specific disc edition qualifies for a PS5 upgrade.
- Check the upgrade price and any expiration or time limit shown for the offer.
- Make sure the disc’s country or region matches the account’s country or region.
- Keep the disc inserted to play the upgraded download.
For a physical-game owner deciding which console to use, the relevant distinction is the disc drive, not whether the console is otherwise capable of running PS4 games. A PS5 Digital Edition cannot use PS4 discs. Buying a disc-drive PS5 can solve the disc-entitlement problem, but it cannot guarantee that a particular game supports save conversion or cross-edition multiplayer.
How do I choose or identify the version on PS5?
If you own both versions, select the edition deliberately before launching. On PS5, open Game Library, select the game, open the … options, and choose the PS4 or PS5 version; the PS4 edition has a PS4 label beside its title.

- Select the game whose edition you want to check.
- Open the … options menu.
- Choose the PS4 or PS5 version, if both are available to your account.
- Confirm the edition label beside the game title before starting it.
This check matters when a game has separate versions and you are trying to continue a particular save, use a specific multiplayer population, or access an edition-specific feature. Choosing the PS5 console does not automatically mean you are launching the PS5 edition.
Does moving my PS4 save to PS5 let me use it in the PS5 game?
Not necessarily. Moving a save file from a PS4 console to a PS5 is a system-level transfer; importing that progress into a game’s PS5 edition is a separate, game-specific feature controlled by the developer.

Sony provides ways to move PS4 saved data to a PS5, including console-to-console network transfer, copying PS4 saves to USB, or using PlayStation Plus cloud storage if subscribed. Those routes move the save data to the new console. They do not, by themselves, establish that the PS5 edition can read or convert that save.
How to transfer the save data
- Choose a transfer route. Use console-to-console transfer over the network, copy the PS4 save to a USB drive, or use PlayStation Plus cloud storage if your subscription includes it.
- For network transfer, prepare both consoles. Follow Sony’s on-console prompts; Sony describes a LAN cable as an optional way to connect the consoles for the transfer.
- Complete the system transfer or copy. Make sure the PS4 saved data has reached the PS5 console or the relevant cloud storage before attempting an in-game import.
- Find the publisher’s instructions for the PS5 edition. Confirm whether that specific game supports importing a PS4 save and follow its stated process.
- Open and verify the imported progress in the PS5 edition. Keep the PS4 installation and its save available until you have confirmed that the PS5 game loads the expected progress.
The last step is a precaution: console transfer and cross-version import are different processes. Do not delete the PS4 installation or overwrite progress before confirming that the PS5 edition recognizes the save. There is no established platform-wide percentage for PS4-to-PS5 save-import support.

Common save-transfer mistakes
- Assuming cloud storage converts saves. Cloud storage moves the file; it does not add an import function to a game.
- Testing only the wrong build. A transferred save may appear in the PS4 edition but not in the separately installed PS5 edition.
- Deleting the original too soon. Keep a verified copy until the new version opens the expected character, campaign, or settings.
- Ignoring publisher steps. Some games require an in-game upload, a menu command, or a separate download rather than an automatic conversion.
Can PS4 and PS5 players play together?
Cross-play between editions is not automatic. For a given game, PS4 players can play with PS5 owners who launch the compatible PS4 edition; playing from the PS4 edition to the PS5 edition requires developer support.
If joining friends is the deciding factor, check the publisher’s current multiplayer documentation and confirm which build each player is using. Two people may both be on PS5 hardware but still be running different editions of the game. Installing the PS5 edition can place a player in a different matchmaking population unless the developer has implemented cross-generation support.
What happens to trophies and downloadable content?
Trophies and add-ons are separate from the console’s save-transfer process. There is no universal cross-version trophy rule for every title: a PS5 edition may share a trophy list, use a separate list, or apply its own developer-defined rules. Check the title’s current trophy information if completion progress matters.
DLC entitlement can also be edition- and game-specific. Do not infer that an expansion will work in the PS5 edition simply because the base game was upgraded or a save was copied. Verify the store listing or publisher guidance for the exact add-on, region, and edition. If an expansion is tied to a particular account, use that account when claiming or downloading it.

Where can I install each version?
Storage location affects whether a game can launch directly from that drive. PS4 games can run from compatible USB extended storage; PS5 games can be stored there but must be copied to console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD before they can launch.

These are Sony’s published requirements for the respective storage types. Check Sony’s compatibility guidance before buying a drive: the interface and heat-dissipation requirements matter for an M.2 SSD, while USB extended storage has a different role for PS5 games.

A practical setup is to leave infrequently used PS5 games on USB storage and copy one back when you want to play it, while running PS4 games directly from that drive. If you want both generations to launch without moving files, a specification-compliant M.2 SSD is the relevant option. Storage capacity does not change an edition’s graphics, save-import rules, or upgrade entitlement.
Is PS4 compatibility on PS5 universal?
No. Sony’s current US support guidance describes the overwhelming majority of PS4 games as compatible and identifies exceptions, so check the current compatibility information for a particular title rather than assuming every PS4 game works.

Which PS5 model and accessories do I need?
Digital owners can use either PS5 model when the game’s entitlement allows it. Physical-disc owners need the model with a disc drive, and the disc must remain available for verification when playing an upgraded download. The PS5 Digital Edition cannot read a PS4 disc.
An extra DualSense controller is not automatically required. Supported PS4 games on PS5 can use DualShock 4, while PS5 games require DualSense. Buy another controller only when the game, player count, or the people using the console actually calls for it.
A LAN cable can make a console-to-console transfer convenient, but it transfers data only. It cannot make a PS5 build accept a save format that the developer has not supported. Similarly, PlayStation Plus cloud storage is one way to move saved data, not proof that a PS5 edition will import it.
What should I check before switching editions?
Use the game’s own current information to resolve the details that cannot be generalized across the PS4 and PS5 libraries. This is especially important before paying for an upgrade or relying on a save transfer.
- Edition: Verify whether you own or are launching the PS4 version, the PS5 version, or both.
- Upgrade entitlement: Check whether your digital purchase or physical disc qualifies, the price, and any time limit.
- Disc and account: If upgrading a disc, confirm that you have a disc-drive PS5 and that disc and account regions match.
- Graphics and performance: Look for the exact edition’s resolution modes, frame-rate targets, graphics options, and patch notes.
- Save continuity: Confirm both that your PS4 save reaches the PS5 console and that the PS5 edition has a documented import process.
- Multiplayer: Check whether the game supports play between the PS4 and PS5 editions.
- Trophies and DLC: Verify trophy-list behavior and add-on compatibility separately from save support.
- Storage and controller: Confirm where the edition can launch and which controller the game supports.
A simple decision guide
Stay with the PS4 edition on PS5 when your priority is preserving the existing build, joining friends who use that build, or avoiding an upgrade charge. It may still benefit from Game Boost or faster loading, but those benefits are title-specific.

Choose the native PS5 edition when its documented graphics mode, loading design, DualSense support, or 3D Audio is important to you and the upgrade terms are acceptable. Before switching, verify save import, DLC, and multiplayer behavior rather than assuming those follow the hardware upgrade.
If you own a disc and a PS5 Digital Edition, the disc cannot serve as the entitlement for an upgraded download. If storage is your concern, use USB extended storage for directly running PS4 games, or use a compliant M.2 SSD when you want PS5 games to launch from expanded storage.
