Yes—most PS4 games work on PS5, and most Xbox One games work on Xbox Series X|S. Your digital purchases generally follow your platform account, but physical discs require a console with a disc drive: a PS5 model with a disc drive for PS4 discs, or an Xbox Series X for supported Xbox One discs. Xbox Series S is digital-only. Compatibility also does not automatically mean you get a native PS5 or Series X|S edition, a save transfer, or every available performance improvement; those details depend on the individual game.
Can you play PS4 games on PS5?
Yes. Sony says the overwhelming majority of PS4 games are playable on PS5, but compatibility is not universal. Sony’s published 2020 figure was that more than 99% of the 4,000-plus PS4 games could be played on either PS5 console model. That is a dated, broad compatibility figure—not a guarantee for every title, future release, delisted game, or game feature. If you own a supported digital PS4 game, sign in to the PlayStation account that bought it and look for it in your game library. If you own a supported disc copy, use a PS5 model with a disc drive. The PS5 Digital Edition cannot read PS4 discs, so owning the disc alone does not give you a way to install or launch that copy on that console.
Compatibility means the PS4 game can run on the new console; it does not mean the game has been rebuilt for PS5. Some titles run as their PS4 version, while others have a separate native PS5 version or upgrade. Will PS4 discs work on every PS5?
No. A PS4 disc needs a PS5 with a disc drive. The PS5 Digital Edition has no way to read or authenticate the physical disc, even if the game is on Sony’s list of compatible PS4 titles.
On a disc-drive PS5, insert a supported PS4 game disc and follow the console’s prompts to install or update the game. Keep the disc available: physical ownership is generally verified through the disc when you play. If a title offers a PS5 upgrade, the disc-drive requirement may still apply to validate or launch the downloaded upgrade. Upgrade eligibility and whether an upgrade is free or paid are set title by title.
If you have a digital-only PS5 but own a PS4 disc, practical options are to use a supported digital copy tied to your account, play the disc on compatible PS4 hardware, or use a PS5 model that can read discs. Do not assume that a disc can be converted into a digital entitlement just because the game is backward compatible.
Can you play Xbox One games on Xbox Series X or Series S?
Yes, most Xbox One games are playable on Xbox Series X|S through Xbox backward compatibility. Microsoft describes the feature as supporting most Xbox One games, not every title. Supported digital games associated with your account can be found in the console’s library or install area after you sign in; title eligibility still matters.

The console model determines what happens to a physical collection. Xbox Series X can play supported Xbox One discs; Xbox Series S cannot. Series S is digital-only and has no disc drive. On Series X, insert a supported game disc and install the game. The console may download game data or updates, and the disc generally needs to remain inserted when you launch the game because it serves as proof of ownership.
In other words, Series X is the straightforward choice if continuing to use supported Xbox One discs is important. Series S can play supported Xbox One games you own digitally, but a physical disc does not become usable on it. Buying the digital version separately may be necessary if you want to play that game on Series S and it is available digitally.
Does backward compatibility give you the new-generation version?
Not necessarily. Backward compatibility lets a supported older-generation game run on the newer console; a native PS5 or Series X|S edition is a separate version that may offer changes designed for that hardware. Some games have a native edition or an upgrade path, and others remain the older version running through compatibility.
Before installing, look for the game’s edition or version in the platform’s library or store, then check the publisher’s upgrade details. Confirm whether the upgrade is free or paid, which original editions qualify, and whether it requires a disc. For a disc-based upgrade, the newer console may need a disc drive even if the upgraded game itself downloads to storage.

On Xbox, backward-compatible games can benefit from the newer consoles, but enhancements are title-specific. Microsoft lists possible features such as higher resolution (up to 4K for selected games), steadier or higher frame rates, FPS Boost, Auto HDR, improved texture filtering, and faster loading. A game may receive some of these, none of them, or a different combination; backward compatibility is not a promise of a remaster or a particular performance result.
Do not assume an older console’s version and the native current-generation version share every feature or entitlement. Check the individual game’s listing and publisher guidance for the version you intend to install, especially if you care about visual upgrades, online functions, add-ons, or cross-generation play.

Usually not for a supported digital game bought on the same platform account. Sign in with the account that owns it and check the library on the new console. For a disc game, use a compatible console with a disc drive and keep the disc for ownership verification when required. You may still need to download the game, install updates, or pay for a separately offered native upgrade.
Ownership does not transfer across PlayStation and Xbox accounts: a purchase on one platform is not a license for the other. Nor does a game license necessarily include every edition, add-on, subscription benefit, or current-generation upgrade. A console may show a game in your library while a particular upgrade, downloadable content item, or online feature remains subject to separate requirements.

There is also a specific Xbox disc-to-digital feature announced by Microsoft on August 26, 2026, under the name “Your Discs. Now Also Digital.” Microsoft says most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support a digital entitlement feature when a supported disc is inserted into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X. This is a supported-title feature, not a conversion guarantee for every disc, and it does not give Series S a disc drive. Check Microsoft’s current details and eligibility for a particular game before relying on it.
Will your saves, multiplayer, and add-ons carry over?
Often, but do not treat it as automatic for every game. Both platforms provide ways to move or sync supported save data, and cloud saves can help when the same account and game ecosystem are used. A save may behave differently when you switch from an older version to a native PS5 or Series X|S version, or when the publisher uses separate progression systems.

For PS4-to-PS5 movement, Sony documents cloud storage and console-transfer routes for saves and downloaded content. On Xbox, Microsoft describes cloud saves and external-drive transfer or reuse for supported games. These options help move data, but they do not guarantee that every game save is compatible with every version. Check the game’s own save-transfer instructions before deleting the old installation or wiping the previous console.
Multiplayer across generations is also game-dependent. Sony says players on PS4 and PS5 can play the same PS4 multiplayer game together when that game supports it. Xbox cross-generation play likewise depends on the game’s online implementation and service. Do not infer that a compatible base game guarantees that every online mode, companion app, peripheral, add-on, or publisher service will carry over.

Downloadable content and purchases may also depend on edition, account, region, or publisher rules. If an add-on is missing, first verify that you are signed into the account that owns it and that the correct game edition is installed; then consult the game’s support information for version-specific compatibility.

- Identify how you own each game. Make a list of digital purchases and disc copies. A digital library generally follows the same platform account; a physical game needs a compatible disc-drive console.
- Check the exact console model. For PS4 discs, confirm the PS5 has a disc drive. For Xbox One discs, plan on Xbox Series X. Series S cannot read discs.
- Verify the specific title. Search the platform’s official compatibility information or the game’s store page. “Most games” does not mean every game, and support can be title-specific.
- Choose the version deliberately. Determine whether you want to run the PS4 or Xbox One version, or install a native PS5 or Series X|S edition. Check upgrade cost, eligibility, and any disc requirement.
- Protect your progress. Confirm cloud-save sync or a supported console-transfer method before erasing or selling the old system. For a version upgrade, check whether the publisher requires a separate save import.
- Plan for installation and storage. Expect that a new console may need to download or update game data even when you own a disc. External storage can help move or keep downloaded games, but it is not a compatibility requirement; the new console may still need to download the correct version or updates.
- Check online and add-on details. If multiplayer, expansion content, or a peripheral feature is essential, verify it for the particular game and version rather than assuming it follows the base game.

The practical difference is less about whether either platform supports its predecessor’s library—it broadly does—and more about your format and the specific titles you care about.
