For most people who already own a PS4 or PS5, PS Remote Play is the better way to play on a PC. It streams games from your console, keeps your console’s library and official PSN features available, and costs nothing beyond the hardware and games you already own. PS4 emulation with shadPS4 is a different proposition: it runs selected PS4 games on your PC, can add higher resolutions and frame rates, but remains early, demanding, and inconsistent from game to game. Choose it for a specific compatible title and a capable PC—not as a replacement for a console library.
If you do not own the game data or are looking for PS5 games on a PC, neither option provides that. An official PC port, where one exists, is a separate route.

What is the real difference between Remote Play and PS4 emulation?
Remote Play streams a game running on your console; shadPS4 attempts to run PS4 software on your PC. That distinction determines what you need, what games work, and which trade-offs matter.
Remote Play sends your console’s picture to the PC
The PS4 or PS5 renders the game and encodes its output as video. The Remote Play app on the computer decodes that stream, while your controller input travels back to the console. The PC is a client, not a PlayStation: it does not install the game or emulate the console.

As Marcus Bell put it in Shattered on 28 October 2026: “Remote Play is a streaming trick, not an emulator. Your PS5 runs the game, encodes the screen as video, and sends it over the network to the PS Remote Play app.” That means the console must be available and able to run the game. It also means Remote Play can expose PS5 titles on a PC, even though the PC is not running PS5 software itself.
shadPS4 runs selected PS4 software locally
shadPS4 is a free, open-source PlayStation 4 emulator for Windows, Linux, and macOS. Its first release was 29 September 2023; the stable core reached v0.20.0 on 14 October 2026. The core has no graphical interface, so the project’s QtLauncher provides a graphical launcher; builds were available through 26 October 2026.
PS4 games use an x86-64 CPU architecture, so their code can run more directly on a PC than PS3 code based on the Cell processor. The harder work is reproducing the console’s graphics and system behavior. shadPS4 uses Vulkan and game-specific compatibility work; shader caching, added in v0.13.0, can reduce repeated shader compilation stutter. A game starting is not proof that it is fully playable.
Which option is better for the games I want?
Remote Play is the practical choice for broad access to games you own on a working console. shadPS4 is worth considering only when a particular PS4 title is important to you and its current compatibility entry supports your expectations.
Choose Remote Play for your console library
- You own a PS4 or PS5 and want to play its installed games from a desk monitor, another room, or away from home.
- You want the console’s supported PSN features, including trophies and official online play.
- You value the real console library more than the possibility of higher-than-console resolution or frame rates.
- You would rather install an official client than obtain game dumps, check per-title emulator status, and troubleshoot individual settings.
Remote Play supports PS5, PS5 Digital Edition, PS5 Pro, and PS4 hosts running current system software. The desktop client works with both PS4 and PS5. Sony’s app is free, and Remote Play itself does not require a PlayStation Plus subscription.
Consider shadPS4 for one specific PS4 title
- You have a capable PC with a Vulkan 1.3 GPU and an x86-64-v3-compatible CPU.
- You have your own legally obtained game data and are prepared to check compatibility for the exact title and version.
- You want to explore community patches, higher resolution, or frame rates beyond a console’s fixed output.
- You accept crashes, graphics errors, uneven performance, and a setup process that can take substantially longer than installing Remote Play.
The Windows compatibility-list snapshot from 21 October 2026 counted 989 tested titles: 166 Playable and 293 Ingame. That is about 17% Playable among the titles tested in that snapshot, not 17% of every commercial PS4 game. The same snapshot listed 212 Playable titles on Linux. These are dated database counts, not a guarantee for your game, build, or hardware.
A different, older snapshot cited by Wikipedia counted 179 Playable and 317 Ingame titles in November 2025. Those figures use a different date and tested set; comparing them directly with the larger October 2026 Windows set does not establish that compatibility got worse.
Can shadPS4 play Bloodborne better than Remote Play?
It can deliver a much higher-resolution, higher-frame-rate experience in a demonstrated high-end setup, but Bloodborne is still rated Ingame—not Playable—in official shadPS4 compatibility records as of 23 October 2026. That makes it a compelling experiment for some PC owners, not a dependable substitute for the console version.
The official records for Bloodborne title IDs CUSA03173 and CUSA00900 on Windows, Linux, and macOS all showed Ingame for game version 1.09. In that classification, Ingame means the game reaches gameplay but has serious problems such as crashes, hangs, or broken graphics or audio. It is a stricter warning than “the game does not boot,” but it is not a promise of an uninterrupted playthrough.

Digital Foundry’s Sam Machkovech reported in January 2026 that “4K Bloodborne on PC is now absolutely viable at a nearly locked 60fps on an RTX 4080, and lesser GPUs can expect to scale down to resolutions like 1440p or 1080p with similar results.” In Digital Foundry’s 4K test on a Core i9-13900K and GeForce RTX 4080, the game reached 60 fps 99 percent of the time with shader caching off, though hitching remained. The reported setup also required patches and adjustments; a run-button bug appears above 120 fps, so the recommendation was to cap the game at 120 fps.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
This is a high-end example, not an official minimum specification or a result that can be generalized to other games. The official Ingame rating remains meaningful even alongside the performance demonstration. Machkovech also noted the console version’s 1080p, 30-frame-per-second limit; emulation can exceed that limit, but only when the PC, emulator build, game version, and patches cooperate.
Bloodborne-only players may also encounter separate community native-recompilation projects for Windows and Linux. These are not shadPS4 itself or Sony products. A community wiki’s 23 October 2026 example for the Linux bbport project reported about 90 fps at 4K with FSR 4 Balanced on an RX 7800 XT. That figure describes that project and setup, not a general performance guarantee; those ports also require a user’s own CUSA03173 version 1.09 dump.
What picture quality and network performance should I expect?
Remote Play’s picture depends on the console’s output, the chosen stream quality, and the network path. shadPS4 renders locally and may exceed a console’s resolution or frame-rate limits, but performance and image correctness vary by game.
Remote Play is not 4K streaming
Sony’s documented PS5 Remote Play ceiling is 1080p at 60 fps. There is no official 4K Remote Play mode in 2026. As Game Console Spin wrote on 30 September 2026: “There is no 4K streaming mode in any official version.” A 4K monitor can enlarge a 1080p stream to fill the display, but enlargement does not create a native 4K source; PlayRoam summarized it this way on 20 October 2026: “Full screen enlarges the video; it does not turn it into a native 4K stream.”
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Game Console Spin states that base PS4 sessions are limited to 720p and 30 fps. A higher-resolution menu option in an unofficial client cannot make a base PS4 render a 1080p stream. PS5 and, according to third-party client documentation, PS4 Pro can stream up to 1080p60. Quality may adjust automatically. Sony also documents HDR Remote Play on Windows when the display is compatible, HDR is enabled, and the Microsoft HEVC extension is installed.
Network quality matters more than a gaming GPU
Sony’s stated minimum is 5 Mbps in both directions; 15 Mbps is the recommended target for a sharper, steadier stream. The minimum is a floor, not a promise of smooth 60 fps. Connect the console to the router by Ethernet when possible: wiring only the PC does not remove a weak Wi-Fi link between the console and router.
Remote Play works away from home as well as on a local network, but the console must be reachable and both ends need a stable connection. For rest-mode wake, enable “Stay Connected to the Internet” and “Enable Turning on PS5 from Network” on PS5; PS4 menu names differ, and some remote features require the PS4 to be the account’s primary console. Remote Play latency depends on encoding, decoding, and the network path. Sony has not published a millisecond glass-to-glass latency service level, so there is no defensible official number to promise.
shadPS4 trades network dependence for hardware and compatibility demands
Emulation runs on the PC, so it avoids streaming over a home network. It still has emulator overhead, shader compilation, and possible frame-time hitching. There is no independent 2026 head-to-head lab study timing Remote Play and shadPS4 on the same game and setup, so claims that one is universally lower-latency would go beyond the available evidence.

What PC and controller do I need?
Remote Play generally asks much less of a PC because the console does the rendering. shadPS4 requires a stronger CPU and Vulkan-capable GPU, and its community-derived requirements should be treated as guidance rather than an official universal hardware sheet.
Remote Play desktop requirements
Sony’s listed Windows baseline is a 7th-generation Intel Core processor or later, 100 MB of free disk space, and a 1024 × 768 display. A discrete graphics card is not required. The app is called PS Remote Play; there is no PlayStation mobile-style PlayStation App for PC.
The Windows client supports Windows 10 64-bit and Windows 11. macOS support has conflicting published information: Tech Insider reported on 21 September 2026 that version 9.5.0 dropped Big Sur, while Shattered reported on 28 October that Sony’s requirements page still listed Big Sur through Tahoe and did not list macOS 27 “Golden Gate.” Check Sony’s current requirements and the installer’s compatibility before relying on an older Mac. The app line was reported as version 9.5.0 for Windows, macOS, and Android in September 2026; the Android update was dated 16 September and the TV app update 2 September.
Android 10 support ended on 2 September 2026; Android 11 is the reported minimum. Sony’s listed mobile requirements also include iOS/iPadOS 15 or later and Android TV. The supported operating system can vary by client version, so confirm the current app listing for the device you intend to use.

shadPS4 system requirements are estimates, not a guarantee
- CPU: Compiled 2026 guidance calls for at least 4 cores / 6 threads, above 2.5 GHz, and x86-64-v3 capability—roughly Intel Haswell or AMD Excavator generation and newer. Digitaloft’s August 2026 guide recommends a modern six-core CPU such as Ryzen 5 5600X or Core i5-12600K.
- GPU: Vulkan 1.3 with swapchain and push-descriptor extensions. Community guides cite 2 GB VRAM as a floor and 4 GB or more as a more practical 3D baseline.
- Memory: Some shadPS4-oriented pages list 8 GB minimum; several 2026 setup guides recommend 16 GB.
- Operating system: Windows 10/11 64-bit, Linux (one wiki cites Ubuntu 22.04 or later), or macOS 26 or later on Apple Silicon. Intel Macs are unsupported.
These are collected guide recommendations, not an official shadPS4 four-tier hardware table. A machine that meets them may still perform poorly in a demanding title. Komputronik reported on 29 October 2026 that experimental PS4 emulation can be more demanding than mature PS3 emulation and that many PS4 games remain slow.
DualShock 4 and DualSense work across both routes
A DualShock 4 or DualSense is a shared practical controller for Remote Play and shadPS4; shadPS4 also maps XInput controllers. Sony’s first-session PC or Mac setup guidance says: “Use a USB cable to connect your controller to your PC or Mac.” Use a data-capable USB cable; a charge-only cable may power the controller without carrying its input. Bluetooth can be used after setup on supported systems. Reported mobile requirements include Android 12 or later for DualSense, Android 14 or iOS 16.4 for DualSense Edge, and Android 10 or later for DualShock 4 Bluetooth.
How do I set up Remote Play on a PC?
You need a PS4 or PS5 with the game installed, a PlayStation account, a supported Windows or Mac computer, and a DualShock 4 or DualSense. For a more reliable stream, connect the console to the router by Ethernet and aim for at least Sony’s recommended 15 Mbps connection in both directions.
- Enable Remote Play on the console. On PS5, open Settings > System > Remote Play and turn on Enable Remote Play. On PS4, open Settings > Remote Play Connection Settings and enable the feature.
- Allow network wake if you plan to use rest mode. On PS5, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode, then enable Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network. PS4 menu labels differ; check its Remote Play and power-saving settings, and verify primary-console requirements for the remote features you need.
- Install the PS Remote Play desktop app. Choose the Windows or macOS client for your computer and sign in with the same PlayStation account used on the console. The PC client is PS Remote Play, not the mobile PlayStation App.
- Connect the controller by USB for its first session. Use a data-capable cable, then follow the app’s pairing prompts. Supported operating systems may allow Bluetooth after the initial connection.
- Select the console in the app. Choose PS5 or PS4, then let the app locate or register the console. If it cannot connect, verify the account, Remote Play setting, console network, and rest-mode wake settings before troubleshooting the PC.
- Set stream quality and test the connection. Choose an available resolution and frame-rate setting in the app. If the image breaks up, try a lower quality, improve the console’s network connection, and check upload and download stability at both locations.
Sony’s Remote Play is the sensible first client to try on Windows. If its picture quality or controller mapping is unsatisfactory, third-party alternatives exist, but they are unofficial and may stop working if Sony changes its services.
Are third-party Remote Play clients worth considering?
They can help when the official client is unavailable on a device or does not meet your needs, but they do not change the fact that the console renders the game. Their features, pricing, and availability differ from Sony’s official app.

chiaki-ng for Linux and handheld PCs
chiaki-ng is a free, open-source client for Windows, Linux, and macOS, including Linux handheld PCs. Its documented presets span 360p to 1080p and 30 or 60 fps; its documentation recommends 1080p for PS5, 720p for base PS4, and 1080p for PS4 Pro. It is a particularly relevant option on Linux, where Sony has no official desktop client.
PXPlay for alternative mappings and stream options
PXPlay, formerly PSPlay, is paid. Its desktop license was listed at €12.99 once for Windows, Linux, and macOS personal use, with a separate PC demo; its Android listing was $6.99 in the US as of 20 October 2026. These are separate platform purchases. Its advertised 2K or 4K output is upscaling, not a native 4K capture from the console. Game Console Spin cited desktop version 2.0.0 in March 2026 for a lower-latency path and 4K video output, but those client features do not change the console’s source resolution.
PlayRoam’s availability is different
PlayRoam was listed as free for home-network PS5 or PS4 play on Windows and Android. Its internet Pro tier was described as $10 per month and “coming soon” as of 20 October 2026, so it was not then a replacement for Sony’s official away-from-home client.
Is PS4 emulation legal, and what files does it need?
Emulator software and the way game or system files are obtained are separate legal questions. Use your own game data and firmware obtained from your own console; downloading commercial games you do not own is copyright infringement. The legal treatment of backups, firmware, and circumvention varies by jurisdiction.
shadPS4 requires users to provide their own game data, such as a PKG or a decrypted game folder containing files such as eboot.bin and sce_sys. Do not assume that a disc can simply be inserted into a PC and played through the emulator. The supplied files must be in a form the emulator and game support.
Published setup information conflicts about whether shadPS4 requires a firmware dump. An August 2026 comparison lists user-dumped official PS4 firmware; a 29 October setup guide says no PS4 BIOS is needed because shadPS4 reimplements the system layer; Bloodborne setup material still discusses firmware modules and a trophy key. The evidence does not establish one universal answer for every build and game. Check the current shadPS4 Quickstart for the exact build and title rather than relying on a generic firmware claim.
Use the project’s official site or project repository to identify legitimate releases. Fake “PS4 emulator” download pages, survey gates, and paid installers can distribute malware. Avoid unknown installers and do not use cracked Remote Play software.

shadPS4 is the PS4 emulator; RPCS3 is the PS3 emulator. The widely reported October 2026 milestone that about 80% of PS3 games were Playable refers to RPCS3, and it should not be used to imply that PS4 emulation has reached the same maturity.
Overclock3D reported on 21 October 2026 that RPCS3 had 80.02% of tested titles marked Playable: 2,855, up from 2,558 in January, while the Loadable/Intro category fell from 104 to 25. These are RPCS3 project compatibility figures, not a measure of the entire PS3 catalog and not a shadPS4 result. Tech Insider, citing igor’sLAB on 30 August 2026, had earlier reported 2,681 of 3,559 tested titles, or 75%, as Playable.

RPCS3 also publishes more explicit hardware guidance than shadPS4. DSOGaming reported a 2026 recommended tier of Ryzen 5 5600 or Core i5-10400, 16 GB RAM, and RTX 2060 or RX 5600 XT; its 4K tier listed Ryzen 7 9800X3D with RTX 4070 or RX 7800 XT. These figures apply to RPCS3, not PS4 emulation. RPCS3 uses official PS3 system software and game dumps, and supports DualShock 3, DualShock 4, and DualSense controllers.
Would an official PC port be better than either option?
For a game with an official PC release, the port is usually the most straightforward PC-specific route. It avoids stream quality limits and the uneven game compatibility of an early PS4 emulator. Features vary by release, so check that game’s own requirements and support rather than assuming every port offers the same enhancements.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor example, Komputronik reported Sony’s stated God of War Ragnarök PC requirements for 1440p at 60 fps as an RTX 3070 or RX 6800, Core i7-7700K or Ryzen 7 2700X, 16 GB RAM, and a 190 GB SSD. That is a requirement for the official PC port, not for Remote Play or shadPS4. Other Sony games with PC ports include Spider-Man, Horizon, Ghost of Tsushima, The Last of Us, Returnal, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. A port is a separate purchase and product; neither Remote Play nor an emulator supplies it.
How should I make the final choice?
Use the decision that matches what you own and what you want to play, rather than treating the two tools as competing versions of the same app.
- You own a console and want your games on a PC monitor: start with Remote Play. It is official, preserves the console’s supported online features, and has a modest PC requirement.
- You use Linux or a Linux handheld: consider chiaki-ng for streaming from your console; shadPS4 is a separate emulator route for compatible PS4 games.
- You want a PS4 exclusive at higher-than-console settings: check the exact shadPS4 compatibility record first, then judge the hardware and setup demands. Bloodborne shows both the potential and the gap between an impressive demonstration and a Playable compatibility rating.
- You do not own a console: Remote Play is not a cloud console or a way to access a library you do not own. shadPS4 does not provide games; it requires your own game data.
- The game has a PC port: compare the port’s published requirements and features before choosing streaming or emulation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use PS Remote Play when I am away from home?
Yes. The official app can connect over the internet to your own reachable console, provided the console is configured for network wake when needed and both sides have a stable connection. This is remote access to your hardware, not cloud streaming from Sony’s servers.
Is PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming the same as Remote Play?
No. Remote Play streams from the PS4 or PS5 you own, while Premium cloud streaming runs on Sony’s servers and is a separate, region-limited service. A cloud-streaming catalog or subscription does not turn Remote Play into a console-free option.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I play a PS4 disc directly in shadPS4?
Do not assume so: shadPS4 setup requires game data in a supported dumped form, such as a PKG or decrypted folder. The emulator does not provide commercial game files, and this guide does not cover circumvention or piracy steps.
Does a successful boot mean a shadPS4 game is finished and stable?
No. Compatibility categories distinguish games that reach gameplay from those considered Playable; an Ingame entry can still have serious crashes, hangs, or broken graphics or audio. Check the current listing for the specific title and version before investing time in setup.
