Usually, no. Most genuine free-to-play games on PS4 and PS5 let you use online multiplayer without a PlayStation Plus membership. PlayStation specifically names Fortnite, Apex Legends and Call of Duty: Warzone as examples. However, “free” can also mean a game temporarily discounted to zero, a monthly game claimed through PS Plus, a trial, or a title included in a catalog; those categories can have different rules. Do free PlayStation games require PS Plus for online multiplayer?

For any game not named in the FAQ, open its own listing and look for the online-play requirement. A listing can change when a publisher alters its business model, introduces a paid mode, releases a new edition, or applies different rules to PS4 and PS5 versions. Do not turn a list of examples into a promise that every free download is membership-free.
What is the difference between free-to-play and free with PS Plus?
A free-to-play game is normally available to download and play without buying the base game. A game that is “free” because you claimed it through PS Plus is different: your license is a membership benefit and remains usable while the appropriate subscription is active.
This distinction explains many apparent contradictions. A player can launch a free-to-play title’s online modes after canceling PS Plus, yet lose access to a monthly game previously claimed through the service when the subscription expires. - Search for the exact title. Select the PS4 or PS5 edition you intend to play. Deluxe, beta, trial and bundle entries can have different terms.
- Open the game’s details. Do not rely solely on the Free, Download or Add to Library button.
- Find the online-play requirement. Look for wording such as “PS Plus required for online play” or a statement that online multiplayer is included without membership.
- Check the edition and region. Requirements can differ by storefront, platform generation or release format. A US listing is not a universal contract for every country.
- Recheck after major changes. A relaunch, new season, paid expansion or publisher policy change can make an old answer stale.
If the listing is ambiguous, do not infer an exemption from the game appearing in a Free to Play category. Contact PlayStation Support or the publisher before paying for a subscription solely for that title.
Do paid PlayStation games need PS Plus for online play?
In general, yes. PlayStation says a majority of games bought on disc or from the PlayStation Store require PS Plus for online multiplayer. That requirement is separate from whether the game is available in a subscription catalog: owning a disc or digital license does not by itself provide the online-multiplayer entitlement when the title requires one.
Essential, Extra and Premium all satisfy the membership requirement. Choosing Extra or Premium only for online access can therefore be unnecessary if you do not want their additional catalog or cloud-streaming features. Conversely, subscribing to Essential will not make a paid game free; it supplies the online entitlement and other Essential benefits, while you still need the game license.
Local multiplayer, single-player campaigns and other offline modes generally do not use the online-multiplayer entitlement. The game can still require an internet connection for updates, account authentication or other publisher services, so distinguish those technical requirements from the PS Plus rule displayed by the Store.
Does a PS Plus bonus pack mean a free game requires membership?

Check what the offer actually grants. If the page describes an add-on or pack for members, it does not change the multiplayer requirement of the underlying game. You may miss the bonus after canceling, but that does not automatically remove access to the free-to-play title itself.
What else do I need besides PS Plus—or instead of it?
A membership cannot replace the basic technical and account conditions for online play. Your console needs a working internet connection, and you need an account that is permitted to use network features. PlayStation’s support guidance also notes that age settings and parental controls can restrict online or communication features.
- Internet access: Use Wi‑Fi or a wired connection; an Ethernet cable can be useful when wireless stability is poor, but it does not grant PS Plus access.
- Correct account: Make sure the game is launched by the account that owns the entitlement or is allowed to use it under the console’s account-sharing settings.
- Age and family settings: A child account may be blocked from multiplayer, voice chat or user-generated content even when the game itself is free.

If the listing says no membership is required, verify that you are launching the correct game, that the console is online, and that the game and system software are up to date. Sign out and back in only if account entitlement information appears incorrect; do not buy a subscription before confirming the requirement. If the prompt persists, check the game publisher’s service status and contact PlayStation Support with the title, platform and region.

When the listing explicitly says PS Plus is required, the prompt is working as designed. A free weekend, promotional discount or member bonus does not override that statement. You can still use any offline or local modes the game offers without the online entitlement, subject to the game’s own rules.
Does PlayStation Portal change the PS Plus rule?
No. PlayStation says Remote Play itself does not require PS Plus. Portal Remote Play simply connects to your PS5; it does not remove a particular game’s requirement for online multiplayer membership.
That is different from Premium cloud streaming. Cloud streaming is a separate Premium benefit, while Remote Play uses a compatible PS5 and the games available on that console. If an online game requires PS Plus when played directly on the PS5, using Remote Play through Portal does not create an exemption. How should you decide whether PS Plus is worth paying for?
Base the decision on the games and benefits you actually use, not on the word “online” in a game’s marketing. Use this three-part check:
- Classify the license. Is the game genuinely free-to-play, purchased, claimed monthly, included in a catalog or offered as a trial?
- Read the exact requirement. Confirm the online-play line for your platform and regional Store listing.
- Count the extra benefits. If you play only exempt free-to-play games, PS Plus is not needed for their multiplayer. If you also play paid online titles, want monthly games, use a catalog or need Premium cloud streaming, compare those separate benefits with the plan cost shown in your region.
This approach avoids two common mistakes: subscribing because a free-to-play game offers an optional member pack, and assuming a game is exempt merely because its current download price is zero.

What are the limits of PlayStation’s “most free-to-play games” wording?
“Most” is a qualitative statement, not a published statistic. PlayStation has not supplied a population-wide percentage of free games that waive PS Plus, so no precise exemption rate can be calculated from the FAQ. The named examples are strong evidence for those titles, but they are not a complete or permanent catalog.
