Back up your original PS2 memory card before launching or modifying anything—and do not assume a re-release can read its saves. Copying a save preserves it; it does not convert it into a PS4 or PS5 save, and compatibility depends on the exact game and release. First identify the new version, then make and verify a backup while leaving the original card untouched.
What should you check before transferring a PS2 save?
Record the exact new game’s title, platform, region and edition, and work out whether it is a remaster, remake, port, emulated classic or version upgrade. A shared title does not establish that two releases use compatible saves.

Before buying or starting the new version, look for an official publisher support page or manual that explicitly mentions save import, transfer progress, cross-save, cross-progression or a previous-save bonus. These features mean different things: a bonus may only unlock an item or reward, while importing progress would need to be described as such. If there is no official migration statement for your exact release, assume the PS2 save will not load until the publisher says otherwise.
That caution applies even when both versions are PS2 discs of the same game. Rockstar’s support documentation says an old-version save cannot be used with a newer version in one documented case because changes to the game code made the versions incompatible. That is a specific example, not proof that every revision is incompatible—but it shows why a matching game name is not enough. Rockstar’s support statement, updated November 29, 2023, says: “Due to changes made to the code of the game it is not possible to use an old version saved game on a newer version of the game.” Treat it as an example of version-specific incompatibility, not a universal rule for every game.

Check the publisher’s instructions for the exact target platform and edition. A feature described for one version, region or platform does not necessarily apply to another. If an import is documented, establish whether it imports campaign progress or only checks for an earlier save to award something. That distinction can prevent a disappointing surprise after you have already started the new game.
How do you back up a PS2 memory card safely?
Treat the physical card as the source of truth. Stop using it while you make the backup, do not format it, and do not overwrite or delete anything to make room for a transfer. Keep the original card unchanged until you have checked the re-release’s migration policy and confirmed your backup is readable.

If you have multiple cards, mark which one you are backing up. Note the game-save names or photograph the card’s contents if that will help you identify the right save later.
- Choose a backup route below. Use a method compatible with the hardware and software you already have; the three options are not interchangeable.
- Copy the save or card data out. Avoid any operation whose direction is unclear. You want a copy from the original card to another location, not a transfer that replaces the original.
- Verify the result. Confirm the expected game’s save or card image is present, then make a second copy on separate storage. Keep the original card and both copies until you know whether the new version supports a documented import.
The aim is recoverability, not simply seeing a “copy complete” message. A second independent copy protects against losing the only computer or USB copy; it does not make an incompatible save compatible. Keeping the original card untouched matters because every backup route depends on selecting and copying the right data. If you cannot confidently identify the destination or the direction of a transfer, stop rather than risk replacing the only original.
Sony’s PS3 documentation describes copying data from a PS2 8MB memory card into an internal PS2 memory card and specifies a separately sold memory-card adapter for that process. Sony also documents copying saved data to storage media for backup purposes. These are useful preservation options, but they do not describe a universal conversion from a PS2 card to a save format for a modern re-release.
Which method can copy a PS2 save to a computer or USB drive?
For a computer backup, a PS2 memory-card-to-USB adapter is the most direct general route in the documented options. If you have a compatible PS2 file-browser setup, you can instead copy saves to a FAT32 USB drive. A compatible PS3 setup is another legacy option for copying a physical card into an internal PS2 memory card.
| Route | What it does | What you need to know |
|---|---|---|
| PS2 memory-card-to-USB adapter | Copies card data or selected saves to a computer using compatible software. | The adapter and software must support the card and workflow. It is not the same as plugging in a generic USB cable. |
| PS2 file browser and FAT32 USB drive | Copies save directories from a memory-card slot to USB storage. | Requires a compatible LaunchElf, uLaunchElf or wLaunchElf workflow; this is not a universal plug-and-play PS2 feature. |
| PS3 legacy route | Copies data from a physical PS2 card into an internal PS2 memory card on a compatible PS3 setup. | Sony’s PS3 documentation specifies a separately sold memory-card adapter. PS2 software behavior and compatibility can vary by PS3 system and title. |
Choose based on what you already have: an adapter and supported computer software, a PS2 setup capable of running a compatible file browser, or a compatible PS3 and the required adapter. A FAT32 USB drive is a destination for the file-browser route, not a card reader by itself. Likewise, a copied file is a preservation copy, not evidence that the next console can use it.
Route A: Use a PS2 memory-card-to-USB adapter
If you have the physical card but not a compatible PS3, an adapter designed to connect a PS2 memory card to a computer is the clearest route in the documented backup workflow. Use software that supports the adapter, then copy the full card or the intended saves to the computer. Confirm that the backup contains the expected game data before you move or alter anything on the original card.

Do not assume any USB cable or generic card reader can read a PS2 memory card. The route depends on a compatible adapter and its supported software. Keep the original card as your fallback even after the computer copy appears successful.
The adapter is a separately purchased piece of hardware; no specific model, current price or universal software package is established here, so check compatibility before buying. The important distinction is that the adapter is made for the memory-card connection and still relies on software that can handle the card. A generic cable does not substitute for that combination.
Route B: Copy saves with a PS2 file browser
If your console setup can run a compatible LaunchElf, uLaunchElf or wLaunchElf workflow, use its file browser to copy the relevant save directories from mc0 or mc1—the memory-card slots—to a FAT32 USB drive. The exact availability depends on the console setup and software; this is not a standard menu path that every PS2 user can assume is available.

Use the USB drive as a destination for a separate copy. A FAT32 drive alone does not read the card: you still need a compatible file-browser workflow. Once the copy is made, check that the expected save directory is present and make another copy on separate storage.
This route is most appropriate if you already have a compatible console setup and know how to use its file browser. It is not presented as a universal modification or setup guide: whether the workflow is available depends on the reader’s console and software. If it is not available, use an adapter or the documented PS3 legacy route rather than assuming a standard PS2 menu can copy saves directly to USB.
Route C: Use a compatible PS3 legacy setup
Sony documents copying data from a PS2 8MB memory card to an internal PS2 memory card on a compatible PS3 setup, using a separately sold memory-card adapter. Sony also notes that PS2 software behavior and compatibility can vary by PS3 system and title, so this is a legacy route—not a guarantee that a PS3 can run every PS2 game or that a later re-release will accept the saved data.
Use this method to preserve or access PS2 card data in the documented PS3 environment. Do not treat the resulting internal card as a converted PS4 or PS5 save. The internal PS2 memory card is still part of a PS2-data workflow; it is not a general bridge between the original card and a modern game’s saved-data system.

How do you move a PS2 save to PCSX2?
PCSX2 can use a file-based memory card image, which is useful for keeping PS2 saves on a computer or using them in an emulator. Its documentation describes a file card as one .ps2 file containing the saves for that card and identifies 8MB as the most compatible file-card size.
PCSX2 also documents MyMC as a utility for adding, removing and exporting saves. Keep a copy of the original image before changing its contents. An exported save or emulator card is still a PS2 save representation; it does not, by itself, become a save that a PS4 or PS5 release can import.
If you use a folder-based PCSX2 memory card, note the distinction: PCSX2 says folder-card saves are isolated from normal PS2 BIOS management unless you use its documented disc-change workaround. For straightforward preservation, a file-based card is the more clearly documented option. Keep the image in a known location and make a separate backup rather than treating the emulator’s working copy as your only copy.
In practical terms, keep the file-based card image as an archive of the card’s contents, and use MyMC only when you need its documented add, remove or export functions. Before changing an image, retain an untouched copy so you can return to the original state. The 8MB figure is a memory-card format and compatibility detail—not a measure of how much progress a game contains or a promise that a particular save will work in every emulator configuration.
How can you check that the backup is usable?
Before you experiment with the new release, verify that the backup contains the expected data and that you can locate it again. Then make a second copy on separate storage. Use this checklist:
- The backup contains the intended game’s save directory or a memory-card image.
- The files are stored somewhere other than the original card.
- A second copy exists on separate storage.
- The original physical card remains unchanged.
- If using PCSX2, you retained a file-based card image; PCSX2 documents 8MB as its most compatible size.
- You have not mistaken a successful file copy for proof that a re-release can import the save.
If the copy is missing the expected save, do not delete or overwrite the source while troubleshooting. Recheck which card slot you copied from, whether you selected the correct game directory, and whether the adapter or file-browser workflow supports the operation you used. If you cannot establish that the backup contains the save, keep the original card untouched and try a compatible backup route rather than treating an uncertain copy as your only archive.
Verification should answer two separate questions: “Did I preserve the data?” and “Can the new release use it?” The first can be checked by confirming the expected save or card image is present and keeping a second copy. The second can only be answered by the target release’s documented migration support. Neither an adapter’s successful copy nor a PCSX2 image resolves compatibility on its own.

Will the re-release load the old PS2 save?
Only if the publisher documents a compatible import or migration path for that specific release. A USB backup, PS3 internal PS2 card or PCSX2 image preserves data; none of them automatically converts it for a modern console.
Recommended Free Tools
- Direct import is documented: Follow the publisher’s exact steps and keep the original backup. Check that the instructions name your platform and release, not just the franchise or an unrelated edition.
- A prior-save bonus is documented: The game may recognize an old save to unlock a bonus. That is not the same as continuing your old campaign or restoring its progress.
- It is a new build or disc revision: Do not presume compatibility. Rockstar’s documented PS2 example shows that changes to game code can make an older save unusable in a newer version.
- It is a PS4 or PS5 release: Look for that release’s own save-transfer instructions. Sony’s modern saved-data guidance covers supported PS4 and PS5 data and describes platform-scoped routes such as console transfer, USB for PS4 saves and cloud storage. It is not a conversion procedure for original PS2 memory cards.
- No official migration guidance exists: Treat the save as unavailable to the re-release unless the publisher confirms otherwise. Retain it for original hardware, a compatible legacy setup or PCSX2.
When a publisher does describe an import, check whether it requires a particular platform, account, region or edition before starting. The available evidence does not establish one universal PS2-to-re-release conversion process, so the new game’s official instructions—not the mere presence of a copied file—must settle the question.
Do not confuse Sony’s supported PS4/PS5 saved-data routes with a PS2 migration path. Console transfer, USB backup for PS4 saves and cloud storage concern supported modern saved data. A PS2 memory-card file may be valuable to preserve, but the newer game must explicitly provide a way to recognize or import it. If its documentation does not say so, proceed on the assumption that you will start fresh in that release.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should you do if there is no save-import option?
Keep the verified backup anyway. It preserves your original progress for continued play in an environment that can read the PS2 save, even if the re-release cannot use it. You can then start the re-release with a clear expectation: it may be a fresh save, or it may recognize a previous save only for a documented bonus.
Do not erase the card to make the new version work, and do not repeatedly experiment with the only copy. If the publisher later documents a migration feature, you will still have the original data to follow the supported procedure. If no such feature exists, the backup has still served its purpose: preserving the save independently of the new release.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThat preservation can matter even when migration is impossible: the original card or a reliable copy remains available for a compatible PS2 environment, a documented PS3 legacy setup or PCSX2. Keep the physical card, the verified backup and the second copy until you are certain you no longer need the original progress. Starting a new version does not require sacrificing the old save.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a PS2 save on a PS5?
Not by copying the card to USB or putting it on a computer; those actions preserve the PS2 data but do not convert it into a PS5 save. A PS5 release would need to document its own import feature for that specific game.

Can I use a regular USB cable to connect a PS2 memory card to my PC?
A regular USB cable does not provide a documented way to read a PS2 memory card. The computer-backup route described here requires a compatible memory-card-to-USB adapter and supported software.
Does a save-data bonus mean I can continue my old game?
Not necessarily. A publisher may use an old save only to unlock a bonus, which is different from importing the save and resuming its progress.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I delete the original card after making a PCSX2 backup?
Keep it until you have verified the image and made a second independent copy. The original is the fallback if the computer copy is incomplete, misplaced or unusable.
Can I copy a PS2 save directly to a USB drive?
A compatible PS2 file-browser workflow can copy save directories from a memory-card slot to a FAT32 USB drive. It is not a standard plug-and-play feature on every PS2, and the USB drive alone cannot read the memory card.
Does a PS3 internal PS2 memory card convert my save for a re-release?
No. Sony documents copying PS2 card data into an internal PS2 memory card on a compatible PS3 setup. That preserves the data in a PS2 workflow; it does not make it a PS4 or PS5 save.
What size memory-card image should I use in PCSX2?
PCSX2 describes 8MB as the most compatible file-based memory-card size. Its file card is a single .ps2 file containing the card’s saves.
What if my game has the same title but a newer disc version?
Do not assume the save will work. Rockstar documented a case in which changes to game code made a newer PS2 version unable to use an older-version save. Check the exact publisher guidance for your game.
The Bottom Line
Back up first, leave the original PS2 card untouched, verify the save and keep two copies. Then check the exact re-release’s official migration policy. A memory-card adapter, FAT32 USB workflow, compatible PS3 setup or PCSX2 image can preserve your progress, but none automatically converts it into a modern console save. Even if the re-release cannot import it, the backup preserves the option to continue on compatible PS2 hardware or PCSX2.
