Cloud synchronization keeps a platform account and a device aligned. It is convenient, but it is not always an independent archive with unlimited historical versions. If a damaged, empty, or older local save synchronizes, the cloud copy can change too. A manual copy stored elsewhere gives you a version that is outside that synchronization cycle.

Xbox generally manages saves through the Microsoft account and cloud system instead of exposing a raw save folder.

For any platform, preserve the existing copy before you accept a replacement or conflict. A backup is useful only if you can identify which version it contains and still have another copy when something goes wrong.
How do I back up BioWare saves on a Windows PC?
Close the game completely, locate the folder for the exact title and release, and copy that entire folder to a separate destination. Do not copy while a save is being written, and do not assume that Steam’s installation backup includes the game’s save files.
What you need first
- The Windows account that contains the game’s Documents folder.
- An external drive or another storage location that is not the only copy of the same Documents folder.
- The exact BioWare game and release, because folder names differ among Dragon Age and Mass Effect titles.
- Enough free space for the complete save folder, including profile and character subfolders.
Windows backup steps
- Exit the BioWare game and wait until it has closed. If a launcher remains open, that is normally acceptable, but the game itself must not still be writing saves.
- Open File Explorer, click the address bar, enter
%USERPROFILE%DocumentsBioWare, and press Enter. - Open the folder for the exact game and release. Use the title-specific locations below rather than copying an unrelated folder.
- Copy the whole relevant folder, preserving its internal structure. Do not select only the newest-looking file.
- Paste the copy to an external drive or a separate storage location. A second partition in the same physical drive is not as resilient as a genuinely separate drive.
- Add the date to the backup folder name, for example

- After the manual copy, leave any supported Steam Cloud or EA app cloud feature enabled, but verify support for that exact title and release.

The parent path is similar, but the final folder is not interchangeable. Copying a generic BioWare directory without checking the game can preserve unnecessary data while missing the folder you actually need.
Does Steam Cloud back up every BioWare save?
No. Steam Cloud is title-specific, and Steam says that many games do not use it for save games. Check the Steam page or the game’s Steam properties for the exact release before treating the cloud icon or a general Steam setting as proof that your saves are protected.
How to check the title
- Open your Steam Library and select the BioWare game.
- Check the game’s store information for the Steam Cloud indicator and open the game’s properties to review its cloud setting.
- Confirm that the game has actually created a local save in its expected folder. Cloud support does not tell you which files the developer selected for upload.
- Keep the manual dated copy even when Steam Cloud is enabled. It is the independent version you can inspect before restoring.
What to do when Steam reports a conflict
Do not choose a version immediately. Close the game, copy the current local save folder to a dated safety folder, and record the timestamps shown by Steam or File Explorer. Steam cannot automatically determine which version is correct when files were modified in two locations, so preserve both versions before selecting the one you want to download or upload.
If you played offline, let the local copy finish copying before reconnecting or accepting a cloud choice. The conflict dialog is a synchronization decision, not a substitute for an archive.

Why Steam’s “Backup game files” feature is different
Steam’s Backup game files feature backs up the installed game through Steam. Steam explains that third-party save locations vary by developer and may need to be copied separately. A backed-up installation can therefore be restored while the separate BioWare save folder is still missing; protect both when you need both.
How do I back up Dragon Age or Mass Effect saves on PlayStation?
On PS5, use the Saved Data menus to upload PS5 or PS4 saved data to PlayStation Plus cloud storage, then use the corresponding download menu when restoring. Do not delete the console copy until the upload is visible and a replacement device can read it.
Upload saved data on PS5
- Open
Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings. - Choose

Download a save to a replacement or reset console
- Sign in on the replacement PS5 with the same PlayStation account used for the upload.
- Confirm that you are using the same game version. A PS5 release and a PS4 release can appear as separate saved-data categories.
- Go to

Keep the old console’s local data until the cloud upload is visible and the replacement console has successfully opened the save. PlayStation transfer documentation also distinguishes streamed games from downloaded games; a streamed copy and a downloaded installation should not be assumed to share an interchangeable save path without an explicit upload or download step.
How do Xbox cloud saves work for BioWare games?

Moving to another Xbox
- Confirm the Microsoft account on the old console and use that same account on the replacement console.
- Connect the old console to the internet and launch the BioWare game long enough for synchronization to complete.
- Do not reset, sell, disconnect, or wipe the old console until synchronization has finished.
- On the replacement console, install or launch the same game release while signed in to the matching account.

Current Xbox guidance commonly exposes a path such as My games & apps > <Game> > Manage game > Saved data for managing saved-data entries. That menu does not turn the cloud-managed data into a normal file you can browse and archive on a PC.
How do I restore a BioWare save without losing newer progress?
Make a safety copy of the current state before restoring anything. Then use the platform’s native restore path and verify the result before deleting any other version.
Restore on Windows
- Close the game.
- Copy the current title-specific save folder to a new dated safety folder, even if it appears empty or damaged.
- Place the chosen backup into the exact path expected by the title, preserving the parent folders and capitalization shown by the existing installation.
- If a cloud service may overwrite the restored files, temporarily control synchronization by following the platform’s offline or conflict workflow; do not accept a cloud replacement until both versions are preserved.
- Start the game and check the in-game load list. If the save is missing, close the game again rather than allowing it to create and synchronize a new blank state.
Restore on PlayStation
Use Download or Delete from Cloud Storage to download the selected saved data. Avoid deleting local data first; the cloud download should be the deliberate operation that replaces or supplements it. After the game recognizes the save, keep the old cloud or console copy until you are certain the restored campaign is correct.
Restore on Xbox
Sign in with the account that owns the synchronized save, connect to the internet, and allow the cloud process to finish. A save that is not immediately visible is not proof that it has been erased; first check the account, game release, and synchronization status before resetting or removing anything.
Can I transfer Dragon Age or Mass Effect saves between PC, PlayStation, and Xbox?
Not by default. Cloud synchronization normally protects a save inside one platform’s ecosystem; it does not automatically convert a Windows folder into a PlayStation or Xbox save.
