For sensitive files, choose storage based on who can decrypt your files, what the encryption covers, and how you will share and recover them—not on a “secure” label. Proton Drive and Tresorit describe end-to-end encryption for their services; self-hosted Nextcloud offers more deployment control but adds administration, while Cryptomator can add client-side encryption to a cloud provider. None is automatically the best fit for everyone, and vendor security statements do not establish that a service meets your legal or organizational obligations.
What should you look for in private cloud storage?
Start with the threat you want to reduce. If your concern is that the storage provider itself could read stored file contents, look for a clearly described end-to-end encryption design and determine who controls the keys. If your main concern is account compromise, accidental sharing, or losing edited work, sharing controls, account protection, and version recovery matter too. “Private” can mean different things; the product label alone does not tell you what is encrypted or who can access it.

Before choosing, answer six questions:
- Where does encryption happen? Is a file encrypted on your device before upload, or does encryption happen after it reaches the service?
- Who controls the keys? Can the provider access the keys needed to decrypt stored file contents, or are those keys controlled on users’ devices?
- What is covered? Check whether the design covers every stored file or only selected folders, and whether it protects relevant metadata as well as contents.
- How does sharing work? Find out how recipients get access, whether sharing can be restricted or expire, and whether encrypted sharing affects collaborative editing.
- How do recovery and administration work? Check version history, account recovery, and what happens if credentials or recovery material are lost.
- Who operates the service? A managed service handles more infrastructure for you; self-hosting shifts setup, maintenance, and security responsibilities to you or your hosting provider.
End-to-end encryption can reduce a provider’s ability to read stored file contents, but it does not settle every privacy or security question. Ask whether metadata is protected, how the service handles shared access, and whether current independent audits cover the apps you intend to use. A dated audit is not proof that every present-day client or feature has been assessed. Privacy Guides’ cloud-storage page includes historical audit information; treat those dates as historical context, not current verification: Privacy Guides’ cloud-storage overview.
Which alternatives are worth considering?
The options supported by the available product information fall into three different categories: managed encrypted storage, self-hosted file sync and sharing, and a client-side encryption layer used with a cloud provider. They are not interchangeable. The table summarizes what is established about each option and where you should verify details before relying on it.

These are different approaches, not a tested ranking. The official Proton and Tresorit pages are primary sources for what those companies say about their own services; they are not independent comparative tests. The cited comparison and directory help identify approaches and options, but do not establish that one is best for every person or organization.
Is Proton Drive a good fit for sensitive files?
Proton Drive is a managed option to consider if you want encrypted storage alongside online document and spreadsheet tools, without operating a server yourself. Proton describes its protected files as end-to-end encrypted, and lists encrypted sharing features that include password protection and expiry dates. Those are Proton’s product descriptions; confirm the current coverage and terms for the features you plan to use.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Proton’s plan listing for 2026 states that Proton Free includes 5 GB of storage. It lists Drive Plus at $4.99 per month for 200 GB and says the plan includes up to 10 years of previous file-version recovery. These are the listing’s stated figures, not a guarantee of current price, availability, billing conditions, or recovery terms. Check Proton’s current pricing page before choosing a plan. Proton’s security claims are described separately on its security page.
For a small personal collection, the free allowance may be enough to evaluate the workflow, but storage capacity alone should not decide whether sensitive files belong there. Try the specific tasks that matter to you: uploading from each device you use, opening documents, sharing with an intended recipient, and restoring an earlier version if that is important. The listed version-recovery period is not a substitute for checking how restoration works for your account and files.

When does Tresorit make more sense?
Tresorit may be worth evaluating when its stated encryption, sharing, or data-residency options align with your needs. The company says files and relevant metadata are encrypted on users’ devices with randomly generated keys, and that keys are not sent to servers unencrypted. Tresorit also describes zero-knowledge authentication and secure sharing. These are vendor statements, not independent comparative findings.
Tresorit’s security page states that the company has ISO 27001:2022 certification. A certification is useful context about the company’s stated security program, but it does not by itself establish that your particular use, configuration, contract, or data meets a legal or regulatory requirement. If you have a formal obligation, have the responsible security, privacy, or legal team assess the service and the exact plan and configuration. Review the company’s current statements at Tresorit’s security page.
Compare the service’s data-residency options against your actual requirement rather than assuming that a regional storage choice resolves every issue. Establish which users need access, how external sharing will be controlled, and what account recovery entails. The cited security page does not provide a plan-by-plan comparison or establish suitability for a specific compliance regime.
Should you self-host Nextcloud?
Choose Nextcloud only if you want the additional control of operating or arranging a deployment and are prepared to manage the responsibilities that come with it. The October 10, 2026 comparison describes Nextcloud as self-hosted or hosted file sync and sharing, with end-to-end encryption available for selected folders. It also identifies setup and administration as trade-offs. See the comparison’s Nextcloud discussion.

Self-hosting is not the same as automatically encrypting everything end to end. Confirm which folders and functions your configured instance protects, who controls the server and keys, and what your chosen hosting arrangement can access. More deployment control shifts operational work to you or your provider. Someone must handle setup, updates, access management, and the continuity of the service; the cited comparison does not specify a particular hosting configuration or maintenance schedule.
For a household or small group, the relevant question is not simply whether you can install the software. It is whether you can reliably operate the environment and recover from mistakes or outages. If you do not want that responsibility, a managed service may be a better fit even if it gives you less control over deployment.
Can Cryptomator make another cloud service more private?
Cryptomator is a client-side encryption layer to consider with a cloud provider, not a cloud-storage provider itself. Privacy Guides suggests this pairing as an option. It can change the workflow because you are adding encryption software between your files and the storage service, so evaluate setup, sharing, device behavior, and recovery as a combined system rather than judging the cloud account alone.
Before relying on this approach, determine how each device will access the encrypted files, how you will share them with other people, and how you will preserve access if a device or account is lost. Do not assume that adding an encryption layer guarantees that every filename, metadata field, collaboration feature, or recovery route is protected; check the current documentation for the software and provider. Privacy Guides’ overview is available at wiki.privacyguides.org.

How should you choose and set up a service?
Use a small, deliberate evaluation before moving your only copy of important files. Start with the data and people involved, then test access, sharing, and recovery using non-critical files. This helps reveal whether the privacy design is compatible with the way you actually work.
- Define the requirement. Write down who you want to prevent from reading file contents, which people need access, what metadata matters, and whether a contract or legal obligation applies. If the latter is true, get a requirements-specific assessment rather than relying on a product’s security language.
- Pick the architecture. Decide between a managed service, a deployment you or a host operate, or a cloud provider paired with client-side encryption software. Be explicit about who is responsible for setup and ongoing operation.
- Verify encryption coverage. Read the current product documentation. Identify what is encrypted, where encryption occurs, who controls keys, whether metadata is included, and how shared access works. For selected-folder encryption, identify which folders are actually covered.
- Check the practical limits. Confirm current storage allowance, price, version recovery, device support, sharing controls, and collaboration features directly with the provider. Do not assume feature parity with Google Drive based on a general alternative label.
- Test with non-sensitive files first. Use a small set of representative documents to check the devices and sharing patterns you need. Confirm that recipients can access the right files and that the workflow does not require a capability you cannot use with encryption enabled.
- Test recovery before migration. Find out how to retrieve an earlier file version and how account or key recovery works. Make sure the people responsible understand the recovery process before the service holds the only usable copy.
- Move files in stages. Keep a separate copy while validating that transferred files open correctly and intended users retain access. The sources here do not establish a universal migration procedure or guarantee that settings, comments, sharing links, or document behavior will transfer unchanged.
- Review access after setup. Check who can access shared material and remove access that is no longer needed. Revisit the arrangement when users, devices, business requirements, or provider terms change.
What can go wrong with encrypted storage?
Encryption can reduce provider access to file contents while making recovery and collaboration more dependent on the way keys and accounts are managed. Before committing, consider these failure modes:
Recommended Free Tools
- Lost credentials or recovery material: determine the documented recovery route before storing the only copy of important files. Do not assume a provider can restore access to data it cannot decrypt.
- Unexpectedly unprotected material: a service may protect selected folders or files rather than every item. Confirm the actual configuration and coverage instead of inferring it from the product name.
- Sharing friction: encrypted sharing may not behave exactly like ordinary link sharing or collaborative editing. Test the recipient’s actual experience and restrictions before a deadline depends on it.
- Administrative gaps in self-hosting: more control also means somebody needs to operate the system. Decide who is accountable for access, maintenance, and keeping the service available.
- False confidence from a certification or old audit: certification and historical audit information do not prove that a particular configuration or current app meets your needs. Check the scope and date of the evidence, and obtain a specific assessment where required.
- Incomplete migration: a file transfer may not reproduce the source service’s sharing or collaboration behavior. Retain a separate copy and validate important files and access before treating migration as complete.
What do the available comparisons establish—and what do they not?
The available information supports comparing the architectures and the specific vendor statements above, but it does not support naming an independently tested winner. The Proton and Tresorit pages describe their respective products, Privacy Guides discusses storage approaches and services, and the October 2026 comparison outlines Nextcloud’s selected-folder encryption and administration trade-off. None of those sources, taken together, establishes complete feature parity with Google Drive, a universal compliance outcome, or current product specifications for every alternative.
Likewise, Google’s April 21, 2023 submission to the ACCC is a Google submission that names cloud-storage offerings; it is not an ACCC endorsement, an independent security assessment, or evidence of current terms. Use it only as evidence that other services exist, not as a security ranking: the submission.

How do you make the final choice?
If you want a managed service and the stated plan details meet your needs, compare Proton Drive and Tresorit by their current documentation, collaboration requirements, recovery options, and any applicable residency or organizational constraints. If you can take on operational responsibility and want deployment control, investigate Nextcloud and confirm encryption coverage for your configured instance. If you want to keep a cloud provider but add client-side encryption, evaluate Cryptomator as an additional workflow. For Sync.com and other alternatives, verify current official specifications before drawing conclusions: the cited material does not substantiate their present encryption coverage or plan limits.
The sound choice is the one whose encryption boundary you understand, whose sharing and recovery workflows you have tested, and whose operational and legal responsibilities you can meet. For sensitive files, that is a more useful basis for a decision than a broad privacy claim or a feature count.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFrequently Asked Questions
Does end-to-end encryption hide file names and other metadata too?
Not necessarily. Encryption claims may cover file contents, selected metadata, or both, so check the current service documentation for exactly what remains visible to the provider and to people with shared access.
Can I use encrypted cloud storage for regulated or confidential business data?
Possibly, but a product’s encryption claim or certification does not establish that your use meets a particular law, contract, or organizational policy. Have the responsible security or legal team review the exact service, plan, configuration, and data involved.
Will my Google Drive links and collaboration settings transfer to another service?
The available sources do not establish migration parity or guarantee that links, permissions, comments, and collaborative behavior transfer unchanged. Plan to validate those elements individually and keep a separate copy until the new workflow is confirmed.
Is an old security audit enough to trust a storage app today?
No. An audit applies to a stated scope and point in time; it is not evidence that every current app, platform, or feature was assessed. Check the audit’s date and scope and look for current independent assessment information.
