There is no single AI chatbot that is universally “private” by default. For the major consumer services with current published policies, you must check the exact account and setting: ChatGPT allows an opt-out and excludes Temporary Chats; Claude excludes Incognito chats from model improvement; Gemini stops future improvement use when Keep Activity is turned off; and consumer Copilot provides opt-out controls, with a separate logged-out rule. These controls generally affect future conversations only and do not automatically prevent storage, safety processing, human review, personalization, or use of feedback.
This guide explains what each policy actually covers, where the important exceptions are, and how to configure a chatbot before entering sensitive information.

Which AI chatbots do not use your conversations for model training?
The answer depends on the product, account type, country, conversation mode and privacy setting. The services below have official consumer policies that describe either an opt-out, a no-training mode, or an account category excluded from relevant model training. None should be read as a promise that no data is ever stored or processed.
| Service and scope | Default training or improvement position | How to stop future training use | Temporary or private mode | Important exceptions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT and other individual OpenAI services | Content may be used to train models. | Turn off the model-improvement control in the service’s Data Controls; the change applies to new conversations. | Temporary Chat is not used to train models. | A conversation connected to feedback you submit may still be used for training. |
| Claude Free, Pro, Max and Claude Code on consumer accounts | Chats and coding sessions may be used to improve models when you permit it, when a conversation is flagged for safety review, or after another explicit opt-in. | Decline Model Improvement in the privacy controls. | Incognito chats are excluded from model improvement even when Model Improvement is enabled. | Deleting a chat and removing data from improvement pipelines are different processes. |
| Signed-in Gemini Apps | With Keep Activity on, activity may be used to improve services, including training generative-AI models. | Turn Keep Activity off; this stops future chats from being used to improve Google AI. | No separate no-training mode is established here beyond the activity setting. | Some chats may be reviewed by people for up to three years and are not removed when you delete activity. |
| Consumer Microsoft Copilot | Conversation activity may be used for model training for eligible users. | Use Copilot’s privacy control to opt out; it excludes future conversations. | A logged-out consumer session has a separate Microsoft statement that conversations are not used for training. | Entra ID organizational accounts and specified Microsoft 365 experiences have different exclusions and terms. |
This is a policy comparison, not a ranking of every chatbot on the market. A service can change its defaults or controls by region, account type or product edition, so confirm the current notice shown in your account.

What does “not used for model training” actually mean?
Model training is only one possible use of a chat. A provider can exclude your text from training while still retaining it to display your history, processing it to generate a response, scanning it for abuse and security, or using it to investigate a reported problem. A training opt-out is therefore not the same as zero data retention.
Training and service improvement
Training uses examples of conversations or other data to change a model’s future behavior. Providers may use the broader term “improve the service,” which can include model training and other evaluations. Read whether the control covers model improvement specifically, and whether it applies to chats already sent or only new ones.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSafety review and human access
Automated systems can inspect messages for fraud, malware, self-harm, policy violations or other safety concerns. A flagged conversation may be routed for human review even when ordinary chats are excluded from improvement. Gemini’s policy, for example, says some reviewed chats can remain for up to three years.
Storage, deletion and feedback
Deleting a chat usually removes it from the visible history first; backend deletion can take longer. Sending a thumbs-up, thumbs-down or written feedback can create a separate exception in which the associated conversation is retained for analysis or training. Check these paths independently rather than assuming one privacy switch covers all of them.

How do I stop ChatGPT conversations from being used for training?
For individual OpenAI services, the default policy allows content to be used to train models, but you can opt out for new conversations. Temporary Chat provides a separate mode that is not used for training.
- Open the ChatGPT account menu and go to the current Settings area.
- Open Data Controls or the equivalent privacy section.
- Turn off the control labelled for improving the model or helping improve ChatGPT. The exact wording can vary by app and region.
- Start a new conversation after changing the setting. The opt-out is prospective; it does not retroactively withdraw chats already eligible for training.
- For a one-off sensitive question, choose Temporary Chat before sending the message and verify that the temporary indicator is visible.
Do not submit feedback on a conversation you want kept outside training. OpenAI states that a conversation associated with user feedback may still be used for training, even when the general opt-out is enabled. The training control also does not answer separate questions about account history, abuse monitoring or legal retention.

Claude’s consumer plans—Free, Pro, Max and Claude Code on those accounts—can use chats and coding sessions for model improvement when you allow it. Anthropic also identifies safety-flagged conversations and other explicit opt-ins as routes for use, so declining ordinary improvement is not a blanket ban on every possible review.
Configure ordinary consumer chats
- Open Claude’s account settings and locate the privacy or data-use controls.
- Find Model Improvement and decline or disable permission for your conversations to improve Claude.
- Use a new chat after changing the setting; treat the control as applying to future activity unless the current notice explicitly says otherwise.
- For a conversation you do not want included in improvement, select Incognito before sending it.
Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude even when Model Improvement is enabled. That exclusion concerns model improvement; normal service delivery and safety controls can still apply.

Why Claude’s deletion periods can look contradictory
Anthropic says a deleted conversation disappears from chat history immediately and is deleted from backend storage within 30 days. Separately, when you have allowed improvement use, de-identified data can remain in model-training pipelines for up to five years. The first statement concerns deletion of the chat record; the second concerns data that has already entered a de-identified improvement process. They are different stages, not competing promises about one database.
How does Gemini’s Keep Activity setting affect training?
In signed-in Gemini Apps, Google says activity may be used to improve services, including training generative-AI models, while Keep Activity is on. Turning Keep Activity off stops future chats from being used to improve Google AI, but it does not end every kind of processing needed to answer requests, protect the service or detect abuse.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open the Gemini Apps activity or privacy controls for the Google account you are using.
- Locate Keep Activity and switch it off.
- Check the confirmation text for the effective date and whether the change applies only to new activity.
- Use a fresh chat after the change. Do not assume earlier activity has been removed from every system.
Google says some chats are selected for human review. Those reviewed chats can be retained for up to three years and are not removed simply by deleting activity. Avoid entering highly sensitive information if that retention and review possibility does not fit your needs. Keep Activity off also does not make Gemini an offline tool: your prompt still has to be processed to produce a response.
Does Microsoft Copilot train on consumer conversations?
Microsoft says consumer Copilot may use conversation activity for model training for eligible users, with exclusions for certain categories and people who opt out. The setting is intended to exclude future conversations, not erase material that was already eligible.

- Open Copilot while signed in and enter its privacy or data settings.
- Find the control for using conversation activity to improve or train models.
- Opt out and read the confirmation so you know whether it covers only future chats.
- If you are using an organizational Entra ID account or a specified Microsoft 365 experience, read that product’s separate terms rather than applying consumer Copilot rules.
Microsoft’s Privacy FAQ also states: “If you are not logged into Copilot with a Microsoft Account or other third-party authentication, we do not train on your conversations.” That statement applies to the logged-out consumer experience described in the FAQ; it is not a universal rule for every Copilot surface or account.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should I choose a chatbot for sensitive information?
Start with the data, not the brand name. If a prompt contains passwords, private medical details, customer records, unreleased code or confidential contracts, the safest choice is usually not to paste it into a consumer chatbot unless your organization has approved that exact service and account.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Use this five-question check
- Which product and account? Confirm whether you are in a consumer app, a business workspace, an organizational identity account or a logged-out session.
- What is the default? Look for explicit wording about model training or improvement, not a general “privacy” label.
- Does the switch cover future chats only? Assume it does unless the policy promises a broader deletion or exclusion.
- Are there exceptions? Check feedback submission, safety flags, human review, abuse investigations and legal requests.
- How does deletion work? Separate visible-history removal, backend deletion and de-identified data already placed in a training pipeline.
Reduce exposure even after configuring the setting
- Replace names, account numbers and exact identifiers with fictional placeholders.
- Share only the smallest excerpt needed for the answer.
- Remove attachments and metadata that are not essential.
- Do not use feedback buttons on conversations containing confidential material.
- Recheck settings after an app update, account migration or change in region.
These steps reduce the consequences of a mistake; they do not change the provider’s policy. For regulated or contractual data, use a service and account tier whose written terms have been reviewed by your organization.
What are the most common privacy mistakes?
Assuming an incognito name means nothing is processed
“Temporary” and “Incognito” generally describe model-improvement treatment, not a guarantee that the service cannot process the prompt for response generation, security or legal compliance.
Best Value
Deleting a chat immediately after sending it
Deletion can remove the visible record while a provider’s other systems, safety logs or de-identified improvement pipeline follow separate schedules. Deletion is worthwhile, but it is not a substitute for preventing disclosure.
Confusing consumer and organizational accounts
Business or organizational accounts can have different contractual controls, but the account must actually be authenticated in that environment. Signing into a consumer app with a work email does not automatically grant organizational data protections.
Relying on a general “private AI” claim
Ask for the exact product, geography, account type, default setting, exception list and deletion period. A provider can truthfully advertise one private mode while operating another mode with different training rules.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can deleting an AI chat stop it from being used in a model that was already trained?
Not necessarily. Deletion may remove the chat record, but it cannot reliably reverse changes to a model or erase de-identified data that has already entered an improvement pipeline. Preventing submission or opting out before sending is stronger than relying on later deletion.
Are business AI accounts automatically excluded from training?
No. Organizational products often have separate commitments, but coverage depends on the exact workspace, identity system and product edition. Verify the written terms for that account instead of assuming that a work email changes consumer-app treatment.
Does turning off training prevent a provider from seeing my prompt?
No. The provider must process the prompt to return an answer, and automated or human safety systems may inspect some conversations. Training exclusion addresses a particular downstream use, not the mechanics of delivering the service.
How often should I recheck an AI chatbot’s privacy setting?
Recheck after major app updates, switching between web and mobile clients, changing account type or moving to another country. Providers can introduce new modes or rename controls, and a setting in one product may not carry over to another.
