Yes, you can use a supported Bambu Lab printer without sending model files through the vendor cloud. Slice on your own computer, then either keep printer communication on your local network with LAN Only Mode or disconnect the printer entirely and transfer the sliced file by SD card or USB drive. The second option provides the strongest separation. Neither option proves that European Union law requires, or currently requires, your printer to scan every file. As of 26 October 2026, the relevant EU measure is a temporary, voluntary regime for online providers detecting child-sexual-abuse material, not a rule aimed at local 3D-printer storage.

How can I use a 3D printer without the cloud?

Use one of two documented workflows: LAN Only Mode, where the printer and your slicing computer communicate across your own network, or a fully offline workflow using removable storage. Both avoid uploading STL or G-code files to a vendor service, but they offer different convenience and security boundaries.

LAN Only Mode

Bambu Lab’s 2025.09 Security White Paper describes LAN Only Mode as a design in which the printer does not initiate external connections. Communication remains on the local network. You bind the client to the printer with the printer PIN while both devices are on that network.

Cloud-dependent functions, including Bambu Handy access, are unavailable in this mode. You therefore give up remote monitoring and cloud job submission in exchange for keeping the print traffic inside your home or office network.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Fully offline SD or USB printing

For the narrowest data path, disconnect the printer from Wi-Fi and Ethernet, slice the model locally, and move the resulting file to supported removable media. Bambu Lab’s same white paper says supported printers can be used entirely offline with an SD card or USB drive, subject to the model’s documented media requirements.

This is closer to an air gap, but it is not automatically one. The computer that creates the file, the removable drive, and any device used to transfer it still form part of the trust boundary.

What does LAN Only Mode actually block?

LAN Only Mode is intended to block the printer’s external, vendor-cloud connection, not every possible path to the printer or every risk on your network.

  • Blocked by design: the printer does not initiate connections to external services for the LAN-only workflow.
  • Still available: local-network communication between the printer and an authorized client.
  • Unavailable: cloud features such as Bambu Handy and other services that require an account connection.
  • Still in scope: your router, Wi-Fi security, the client computer, local credentials, and any software that can reach the printer.

The last point is an architectural inference: if control stays on the local network, compromise of that network or of the client remains relevant. LAN-only reduces an external dependency; it does not make the printer cryptographically or physically isolated.

How do I enable and use LAN Only Mode?

  1. Prepare the network. Put the printer and the computer running the supported client on the same trusted local network. Avoid an untrusted guest network that prevents device-to-device communication.
  2. Turn on the printer’s LAN-only setting. Use the printer’s network or security settings to enable LAN Only Mode. The exact menu wording can vary by firmware and model.
  3. Bind the client with the printer PIN. In the client’s device-connection flow, select the printer discovered on the local network and enter its PIN. This authorizes that client for local communication.
  4. Slice locally. Keep the source model and generated G-code on the computer. Do not use a cloud-slicing or cloud-upload step.
  5. Send the job over the LAN. Start the print from the locally bound client, then confirm that cloud-only controls are absent rather than assuming they still work.
  6. Verify the boundary. Check the router’s connected-device and outbound-traffic controls if you need evidence that the printer is not making external connections.

If discovery fails, confirm that both devices are on the same subnet, that local-client firewall rules permit discovery, and that the printer PIN was entered for the current device. A network that blocks peer traffic can make a correctly configured printer appear offline.

How do I print completely offline with an SD card or USB drive?

Offline printing removes the printer from the network rather than merely limiting it to local traffic. It is the better choice when you want the printer to have no network attack surface during a job.

  1. Disconnect networking. Turn off Wi-Fi and unplug Ethernet, if fitted. Do this before transferring the job.
  2. Slice on a computer that you control. Export the printer-specific file locally. Review the slicer’s output and make sure it targets the correct model and firmware generation.
  3. Use supported media. Copy the file to a microSD card or USB drive that the printer model accepts. Follow the model-specific instructions for file system, directory placement, and safe removal.
  4. Move the media physically. Eject it from the computer, insert it into the printer, and select the file from the printer’s local interface.
  5. Remove and clear the media when finished. Eject it safely and store it where other people or devices cannot alter the files.

A removable drive is not a magical privacy device. Malware on the slicing computer could alter a G-code file, and a shared or unencrypted drive could disclose models to anyone who handles it. Treat the computer, operating system, slicer, router (if still connected), and media as one privacy system.

What is the privacy difference between cloud, LAN-only, and offline printing?

The practical trade-off is between convenience and how much infrastructure you trust. The following comparison uses the boundaries documented for Bambu Lab’s LAN-only and offline workflows.

Printing method External data exposure Remote-control convenience Vendor account or service dependence Local-network attack surface Removable-media handling Firmware and software compatibility Operational convenience
Cloud-connected Model and job data can pass through vendor services, depending on the feature used. Highest; remote submission and monitoring are available when supported. Highest; cloud features require the vendor’s services and usually an account. Present, plus the external service path. Not required for normal cloud jobs. Usually the broadest support for the vendor’s current apps and features. Most convenient for multi-device and remote workflows.
LAN Only Mode Designed to keep printer communication on your local network; no external printer connection is intended. Local control only; cloud-only features are unavailable. Reduced, because the print path does not use the cloud, but client software and firmware still matter. Present; the router and every device allowed onto the LAN are part of the boundary. Not required. Check current firmware and client support; unofficial integrations may be restricted. Good for a fixed home or studio network.
Fully offline SD/USB No printer network path during the job; files remain on the computer and removable media unless you copy them elsewhere. None while disconnected; jobs must be started at the printer. Lowest for printing itself. Removed from the printer during the offline session. Required, with handling and malware risks. Follow model-specific media and file-format instructions; third-party start-print features may not work. Most deliberate and least convenient.

Can Bambu Lab see my STL or G-code files in LAN-only mode?

LAN Only Mode is designed so the printer does not initiate an external connection, which means the local print transfer is not supposed to travel through Bambu Lab’s cloud. That is different from a guarantee that no copy of a model exists elsewhere: a cloud-connected slicer, synchronization folder, backup service, crash report, or another application could still upload files independently.

To make a meaningful privacy claim, keep the source model and sliced output on storage you control, disable optional synchronization, and review which applications have access to the project directory. LAN-only protects the printer-to-client path; it cannot police unrelated software on the computer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What changed with Bambu Lab’s authorization controls?

Bambu Lab announced an authorization-control update that can restrict unofficial software from initiating certain printer actions. For affected workflows, the company introduced Bambu Connect. This matters because a printer can be local-only while a particular third-party slicer or integration is still unable to start a job.

Before moving to a LAN-only or offline setup, check the current firmware, printer model documentation, and the supported-client list. Do not assume that an older community integration will retain print-start permissions after an authorization update. If a local client can export files but cannot launch a print, use the documented supported path or transfer the file by removable media.

Is LAN-only printing the same as an air-gapped printer?

No. LAN-only means the printer communicates locally and is intended not to initiate external connections. An air-gapped arrangement removes the printer from networks altogether, normally by disabling wireless networking and unplugging Ethernet.

LAN-only is appropriate when you need local dashboards, network transfer, or a workshop with several trusted computers. Offline media is stronger when the printer handles sensitive designs, when the network itself is not trusted, or when you want a simple physical approval step before every job.

Is the EU going to scan files on my 3D printer?

There is no established current EU rule requiring a local 3D printer to inspect every STL or G-code file. The relevant measure concerns online service providers and child-sexual-abuse material, not a general mandate for printers or personal computers to scan 3D-print files.

What the temporary EU measure does

The Council of the European Union said on 23 July 2026 that a replacement temporary regulation allows online providers to resume voluntary detection, reporting, and removal of child-sexual-abuse material until 3 April 2028. The previous interim derogation expired on 3 April 2026. Parliament’s amendment excludes number-independent interpersonal communications to which end-to-end encryption is, has been, or will be applied.

That is a time-limited permission for participating online providers, not an instruction to scan files stored on a disconnected printer. The Council’s policy page says negotiations on a permanent framework are continuing, so the final scope should not be described as enacted law.

What remains a proposal or policy debate

Permanent detection powers and their safeguards remain under negotiation. Separately, the Internet Architecture Board’s 15 December 2023 statement argues that mandatory client-side scanning can require access to content before encryption or after decryption and can “undermine end-to-end encryption.” It warns that “Mandatory client-side scanning creates a tool that is straightforward to abuse as a widespread facilitator of surveillance and censorship.” That is the IAB’s technical and policy position, not a settled legal ruling.

Does client-side scanning mean my device must inspect every file?

Not under the current temporary EU measure described above. “Client-side scanning” is a general design in which software checks content on a user-controlled device before encryption or after decryption; whether a future law would require it, which services it would cover, and what safeguards would apply are separate questions.

For a 3D-printer owner, the practical response is data minimisation: do not upload a model unless a feature genuinely requires it, keep sensitive projects local, and use offline transfer when the printer does not need network access. That reduces exposure regardless of how the policy debate develops, without claiming that a printer is currently subject to a scanning order.

Which private-printing setup should I choose?

Choose based on the job rather than on a slogan about “no cloud.”

  • Choose cloud-connected printing when remote monitoring, access from several locations, or automatic service features outweigh the data exposure you accept.
  • Choose LAN Only Mode when you want local transfer and local monitoring inside a trusted network, and you can keep the router and client computers secured.
  • Choose offline SD/USB printing for confidential prototypes, regulated designs, or a printer that should have no network path during operation.

For a mixed workshop, use LAN-only for routine jobs and reserve offline media for the most sensitive files. Keep separate project folders so a cloud-enabled application cannot silently synchronize the offline set.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I check when a private workflow fails?

The printer is not discovered in LAN Only Mode

Confirm that the printer and client are on the same local network and subnet, peer-to-peer traffic is allowed, and the client firewall is not blocking discovery. Re-enter the current printer PIN after a reset or firmware change.

The slicer exports a file but cannot start the print

Check whether the firmware’s authorization controls restrict that integration. Use a supported client, Bambu Connect where required, or transfer the exported file by SD card or USB drive.

The offline file is rejected

Recheck the printer model, firmware generation, media type, file system, and folder layout against the model-specific instructions. Re-export the file locally rather than renaming an output intended for another printer.

A supposedly private file appears in an online backup

Inspect synchronization settings on the computer, including desktop, documents, project, and removable-drive backup rules. Move sensitive files to a local-only directory and remove existing copies from services you do not intend to use.

What does this privacy choice actually establish?

Using LAN-only or offline printing establishes a controllable data-minimisation practice: the printer can operate without sending its job through a vendor cloud, and offline media can remove its network connection altogether. It does not establish that every surrounding device is secure, that a third-party slicer is authorized, or that EU law mandates scanning of local 3D-printer files. Those are separate technical and legal questions, and keeping them separate is the most accurate way to protect both your designs and your expectations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I update printer firmware without giving up a private workflow?

Firmware updates may require temporarily reconnecting the printer or using a vendor-supported local method, depending on the model. Perform the update deliberately, then recheck LAN-only settings, PIN binding, and third-party authorization before sending a sensitive job.

Does deleting a cloud print remove every copy of my model?

Not necessarily. Copies may remain in account history, synchronized folders, backups, logs, or another person’s download directory. Check each storage location and retention control rather than relying on a single delete button.

Can a router see my files during LAN-only printing?

A router can observe local network traffic metadata and may be able to log device connections; whether it can read the print content depends on the protocol and any encryption used. A network you do not administer is therefore a weaker privacy boundary than a disconnected printer.

Is a microSD card enough to make 3D printing private?

It removes the printer’s network path only if the printer is actually disconnected. The computer that writes the card, the card’s contents, and anyone who handles it can still copy or modify the model, so protect those parts as well.
