There are two genuinely good places to begin Pokémon: Pokémon the Series: Indigo League (Ash and Pikachu’s 1997 story) or Pokémon Horizons: The Series (Liko and Roy’s new 2023-era adventure). Start with Horizons if you want a modern, self-contained show and the shortest route to the current anime. Start with Indigo League if you want Ash’s complete journey, from Kanto through his World Championship and farewell. Returning viewers who only want Ash’s ending can begin with Pokémon Journeys, continue through Master Journeys and Ultimate Journeys, then watch To Be a Pokémon Master.
Movies are optional side stories, and no single U.S. service carries every season. The lists below use English release titles, explain the season-numbering traps, and show how to fill streaming gaps legally.

Which Pokémon watch order is best for you?
Choose based on the story you want, not on a supposed official ranking. The Pokémon Company publishes where-to-watch information, but it does not publish a ranked “best order.” The anime is mostly episodic, so many episodes stand alone; nevertheless, each plan below preserves the continuity that matters.
Choose Horizons first for a clean modern start
Pokémon Horizons: The Series follows Liko from Paldea and Roy from Kanto, rather than Ash. Liko’s partner is Sprigatito, Roy’s is Fuecoco, and they travel with the Rising Volt Tacklers aboard the airship Brave Olivine, led by Professor Friede and Captain Pikachu. The Explorers pursue Liko’s mysterious pendant. Ash and Pikachu are not the leads, and earlier seasons are not prerequisites.

Choose Indigo League first for the original journey
The Kanto beginning introduces Ash, Pikachu, Misty, and Brock and establishes the gym-badge road-trip format. Continue through Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova, Kalos, Alola, and the World Coronation Series before moving to Horizons.
Choose Journeys first for Ash’s ending
If you already know the characters and only want the championship payoff, begin with Pokémon Journeys: The Series. It is a later chapter, not a Kanto recap: Ash travels globally with Goh, competes in the World Coronation Series, becomes World Champion in Ultimate Journeys, and then receives a short farewell in To Be a Pokémon Master.
How do I watch Pokémon Horizons in order?
Watch the English titles consecutively. Horizons is a serialized mystery-adventure, so unlike much of classic Pokémon, skipping randomly can obscure ongoing plot threads.
- Pokémon Horizons: The Series (Season 1, 45 episodes). Japan broadcast these episodes from 14 April 2023 to 29 March 2024. Liko and Roy join the Rising Volt Tacklers while the Explorers target Liko’s pendant.
- Pokémon Horizons: Season 2—The Search for Laqua (44 episodes). The story moves into Terastal training at Naranja Academy and the Rayquaza Rising storyline, including a Shiny Rayquaza and locations associated with Scarlet and Violet downloadable content.
- Pokémon Horizons: Season 3—Rising Hope (Japanese arc: Mega Voltage, 47 Japanese episodes). The arc follows a one-year in-universe time skip, slightly older Liko and Roy, Mega Evolution’s return to the television anime, the aftermath of Laqua, and additional backstory for Roy and Ult. Its U.S. Netflix addition was 6 January 2026.
- Pokémon Horizons: Season 4—Wonders Ahead (Japanese arc: Wonder Voyage). The Japanese arc began 22 May 2026. Liko, Roy, and the Rising Volt Tacklers set out again after Laquium is no longer a threat; new companion Navie and a Ditto are part of the setup. In the U.S., Part 1 premieres exclusively on Netflix on 27 February 2027. Later parts do not yet have announced U.S. dates.
As of late October 2026, Seasons 1–3 are on Netflix in the United States. Netflix title IDs cited in official and published listings are 81696980 (Season 1), 81944585 (Season 2), and 82077961 (Season 3); searching the title is more reliable than entering an ID. The Pokémon Company describes Season 4 as the next chapter, while English viewers remain behind the Japanese broadcast.
What is the complete Ash-era Pokémon order?
Use these English release titles from the beginning. Distributor season numbers vary, so the title is the dependable identifier.

Ultimate Journeys contains the World Coronation Series and Ash’s World Championship. Catalogs differ on the farewell: some fold roughly 11 episodes of To Be a Pokémon Master into Season 25, while others list it separately. If your service shows both labels, play both. Pokémon: The Arceus Chronicles is an optional Journeys-era special between Master Journeys and Ultimate Journeys, not a missing season.
Why do Pokémon season numbers look wrong?
English distributors package episodes differently from Japanese broadcast blocks. The Japanese first block contains 82 Indigo episodes (broadcast 1 April 1997–21 January 1999), while U.S. packaging often calls only about 52 episodes “Season 1” and moves remaining Kanto material into the start of Orange Islands. That can make a platform appear to jump from “Indigo League” to a strangely large Orange Islands set.
If your “Season 1” ends at the Indigo League tournament, start the next title, Adventures in the Orange Islands; do not skip ahead to Johto. Search exact titles such as Battle Frontier, XY Kalos Quest, or Adventures in the Orange Islands instead of relying on a service’s generic “Season 24” label.
Do I need to watch every Pokémon season?
No. The television anime has more than 1,350 episodes by the October 2026 count from Furansujapon; IGN’s 3 February 2026 count was “over 1,300 episodes across 27 seasons.” Those totals include the continuing Horizons era, not a required pre-watch list.
Classic Ash seasons are largely episodic. IGN’s Rafael Motamayor describes the show as mostly standalone, meaning you can sample or skip without becoming completely lost. However, character-building episodes, early Brock and Misty stories, and Team Rocket’s recurring comedy are part of the appeal for many viewers. Horizons is more serialized, so use its release order rather than a filler-cut approach.

What about online filler lists?
Furansujapon labels “hors-série” episodes by Japanese episode number; its Indigo examples include 8–9, 19, 32–33, 37–39, 44, 46, 49, 51, 54, 57, 59, 62, 64–67, and 69–70. These are fan or editorial tags, not an official Pokémon Company skip list, and numbering will not match every English service. Journeys onward has no comparable published filler list there. If you want a shorter classic run, skip by personal interest rather than treating any list as canonical.
How should I fit Pokémon movies into the watch order?
Movies are optional. The television plot does not require all 23 animated films, and the live-action Detective Pikachu is a separate continuity. You can watch movies in release order as a second track, or insert the era-matched films approximately where listed below.

Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution (2019) is a CGI remake of the first movie, not a new continuation. Some lists also include the television films Mewtwo Returns and The Mastermind of Mirage Pokémon; treat them as extras.
The separate 2017–2020 Ash movie timeline
- Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You! (2017) is a loose reboot of the pilot.
- The Power of Us (2018) continues that film continuity and loosely remakes The Movie 2000.
- Pokémon: Secrets of the Jungle (2020) continues the alternate line.
These three films do not replace Indigo League and should not be woven into the main television canon. Watch them as a separate mini-marathon. Detective Pikachu is live action and outside both anime tracks.
Where can I watch Pokémon in the United States?
Use the official Pokémon episodes and movies where-to-watch guide first, then check the title on the service available to you. Catalogs change, so every availability statement here is a late-October 2026 snapshot rather than a permanent promise.

The Pokémon TV app sunsetted on 28 March 2024, according to Pokémon Support. Any guide directing you to it as a complete library is outdated. No single U.S. subscription currently guarantees the entire backlog; digital purchase and DVD/Blu-ray are the dependable ways to fill gaps.

For a low-commitment sample, try several Indigo League episodes, then one episode or short run of XY, Journeys, or Horizons. Indigo League is rated TV-Y7 on JustWatch’s listing. If the household prefers a serialized mystery, continue with Horizons; if it prefers gym badges and a long-running cast, choose the Indigo-to-Ash plan.

What is the simplest final recommendation?
Start Horizons if you are new and want the current, self-contained adventure. Start Indigo League if Ash’s entire journey matters to you. Start Journeys if you only need Ash’s final championship and farewell, then watch Horizons afterward when you want the present-day series.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I start Pokémon Horizons without watching Ash’s seasons?
Yes. Horizons introduces Liko, Roy, the Rising Volt Tacklers, and the Explorers as its central cast. Earlier Ash seasons provide callbacks but are not required to understand the main plot.

Is Pokémon Horizons a sequel to Ash’s story?

Why is Orange Islands missing from my streaming app?

Do the Pokémon movies happen in the same timeline as the show?
Most films released from 1998 through 2016 sit beside the Ash television continuity, but the 2017–2020 trilogy uses an alternate Ash timeline. The 2019 Mewtwo film remakes the first movie, while Detective Pikachu is a separate live-action continuity.
