When a Pokémon game shuts down, the result depends on the individual service. Your Pokémon Trainer Central login may remain available while the closed game’s server-stored progress, virtual currency, collection, or watch history becomes inaccessible. Some data can migrate to a successor, some can be exported before closure, and some is permanently lost. Purchases and recurring subscriptions follow separate rules, so an intact login does not guarantee access to a game or a refund.
The clearest examples are Pokémon TCG Online, whose eligible collection data can move to Pokémon TCG Live; Pokémon TCG Card Dex, whose data could not be exported; and Pokémon Rumble Rush, which could not be played even when already installed. Use the exact game’s end-of-service notice—not a general Pokémon-account assumption—to determine what survives.

What is the difference between a Pokémon account and a game account?
A shared login, a particular game’s data, and a purchase entitlement are separate layers. Pokémon’s notice for Pokémon TV illustrates the distinction: the Pokémon Trainer Central account remained open after the service ended, while account-tied watch history became inaccessible. The same principle applies to games: an intact login does not reopen a closed game’s servers, and a game’s shutdown does not automatically prove that the entire shared account was deleted.
- Shared account: Your Pokémon Trainer Central credentials may continue to work for other connected services.
- Game access: Launching and playing normally depends on that game’s servers, authentication, and any required updates.
- Progress and inventory: Saves, collections, decks, avatars, friends lists, and virtual currency are usually service-specific unless an official transfer is announced.
- Billing: A purchase record or recurring pass is handled separately by the game and, where applicable, the Apple, Google, Nintendo, or other store account that billed it.
Pokémon’s account-versus-service explanation is documented in its Pokémon TV sunset information. It is an account illustration, not a promise that every game retains data after closure.

Which Pokémon shutdowns show the different possible outcomes?
These services demonstrate why no single rule covers every Pokémon title.
| Service | Shutdown or sunset | What happened to access and data | Purchases or transfer result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pokémon TCG Online | Servers closed June 5, 2023; Pokémon TCG Live launched globally June 8, 2023 | Eligible collection data could migrate using the same Pokémon Trainer Central login | Transfer was limited by item category and quantity; many currencies, decks, friends, avatars, and unopened products did not transfer as items |
| Pokémon TCG Card Dex | Deactivated September 20, 2023 | Collection-tracking data was lost | No export or transfer route was provided |
| Pokémon Rumble Rush | Service ended July 21, 2020 | Previously installed copies could not be played; new installation and updates were unavailable | Unused Poké Diamonds could not be used or redeemed |
| Pokémon TV | Service sunset; see Pokémon’s current notice for the applicable timeline | Pokémon Trainer Central accounts remained, but service-specific watch history became inaccessible | Not a game migration example |
The dates and outcomes come from Pokémon’s official TCG Online sunset FAQ, Card Dex sunset FAQ, and Rumble Rush service-ending notice. The Rumble Rush notice says, “You also cannot play any previously installed version of the app.”

Pokémon TCG Online’s eligible collection data could move to Pokémon TCG Live when the player used the same Pokémon Trainer Central account. This was a defined migration program, not a general right for every closed Pokémon game.
Cards and item limits
The sunset FAQ maintained by Pokémon Support states that up to four copies of a unique eligible Pokémon TCG card can transfer. Special categories have their own limits. Cards beyond the stated limits do not transfer and receive no Credits. Some earlier card series were excluded, and some cards described in historical FAQ language as transferable may not be playable in the current successor environment; do not treat an old transfer statement as a guarantee of present-day playability.
Many card sleeves, coins, and deck boxes transfer at no more than one of each item. The transfer is therefore a filtered inventory conversion, not a complete copy of the old account.
What did not transfer as ordinary account data?
Pokémon Support lists currencies, friends lists, saved decks, avatars, specified cards, and unopened products among the exclusions or non-transferring categories. Saved deck-list text could be exported locally before migration, but saved decks did not automatically become Live decks. Banned accounts do not migrate.

How were unopened products handled?
Unopened TCG Online products did not appear in Live as unopened products. The FAQ lists a tiered in-game allocation for eligible unopened items: 500 for one to nine items, increasing through the published tiers to 12,400 for 125 or more. One official page calls this allocation “Crystals,” while a separately maintained migration FAQ calls it “Trainer Points.” Because the official terminology conflicts, describe it as the tiered allocation rather than promising a particular currency name. Neither page promises cash compensation for excluded products.
Is there a migration deadline?
Pokémon’s current sunset FAQ says there is no deadline at present and that advance notice will be given if that changes. That statement can be revised, so anyone who still has eligible data should check the live FAQ before relying on it.
What happened to Pokémon TCG Card Dex data?
Card Dex was a separate collection-tracking app, not TCG Online. Pokémon said it would be deactivated on September 20, 2023, and that its data would not be exportable or transferable in any way. The official wording is explicit: “Pokémon TCG Card Dex data will not be exportable or transferrable in any way.”
Pokémon pointed users to its Trading Card Database and suggested building a new TCG Live collection with code cards from physical products. Those options are ways to start a new record; they do not recover Card Dex data. Do not apply TCG Online’s migration rules to Card Dex.

Can an installed Pokémon game keep working after its servers close?
Installation alone is not an offline license. Rumble Rush is the documented counterexample: Pokémon stated that first-time installation and updates would stop, previously installed copies could not be played, and unused Poké Diamonds could no longer be used or redeemed. That notice does not establish what happened to every user’s credentials or whether a particular jurisdiction required a remedy, and it should not be generalized to every Pokémon title that has an offline mode.
For another game, look for an explicit statement that offline play survives server closure, including whether the app still authenticates, downloads required content, and restores local saves. Without that statement, assume that a retained app may fail when its online service is unavailable.

What happens to purchases, virtual currency, refunds, and subscriptions?
These are four different questions, and a shutdown notice may answer them differently.
Virtual currency and digital items
Unused currency can expire with the service or be excluded from a migration. Rumble Rush’s unused Poké Diamonds became unusable. TCG Online’s transfer rules converted or excluded categories under specific limits rather than preserving every item at face value. A login that still works does not create a right to spend currency from a closed game.

The cited UK Pokémon terms generally reject refunds for virtual content and compensation for unused virtual content when an account closes, while preserving rights that cannot legally be excluded under local law. Those are UK terms, not a blanket statement of rights in the United States or elsewhere. Check the game’s notice, the store that processed the payment, and the law where you bought the content. Keep receipts and transaction records before contacting support; do not assume that a shutdown automatically triggers a refund.
Recurring passes
A subscription is billed by the account that purchased it. Pokémon TCG Pocket’s support information says that deleting the app or deleting save data does not automatically cancel its premium pass; renewal must be managed through the applicable store account. The same practical rule is safer for any game: cancel the recurring charge in the store or billing account that shows the subscription, rather than relying on uninstalling.
Physical code cards
Physical Pokémon TCG products can include code cards that help build a TCG Live collection, and TCG Online-branded code cards may be redeemable in Live. A code can be redeemed only once, and the Live reward can differ from what the old product granted. Code cards do not restore excluded TCG Online items, Card Dex data, Rumble Rush purchases, or TCG Pocket cards; verify the product’s current eligibility before buying.
What should you do before a Pokémon game shuts down?
Start with the exact game and your region. Then use this order so that you do not confuse a shared login with a transferable inventory.

- Find the official end-of-service notice. Record the server-close date, the last date for purchases, any migration window, eligibility rules, and whether the notice applies to your country or edition.
- Confirm the linked login. Sign in to the Pokémon Trainer Central account or other account named by the game. If multiple accounts exist, identify the one holding the progress; do not create a new account and expect the old data to appear.
- Read the item-by-item exclusions. Check cards, currencies, unopened products, decks, friends, avatars, and other categories separately. A statement that “collection data” transfers does not mean every object transfers.
- Export what the notice permits. For TCG Online, save deck-list text locally before migration because saved decks do not transfer automatically. If a service offers no export, save only information that the official app actually exposes; screenshots cannot recreate server entitlements.
- Use the migration before any announced change. Follow the successor game’s account-linking flow and retain confirmation screens. TCG Online’s no-current-deadline statement is subject to future notice.
- Document payments. Preserve store receipts, order dates, transaction identifiers, and the account used to pay. These records help the game’s support team or payment platform investigate an unfulfilled purchase, but they do not guarantee reimbursement.
- Cancel recurring billing separately. Open the store account that bills the pass, turn off renewal, and keep the cancellation confirmation. Deleting the app or save data is not a substitute.
- Check the app after closure only if offline play is promised. Do not count on an installed copy when the notice requires a live server, as Rumble Rush demonstrates.
What can you do after the service has closed?
First, determine whether the problem is account access, game-server access, migration eligibility, or billing. Try the official successor or account portal only when the closure notice identifies one. If a migration was announced, use the same login and verify the exact eligibility and deadline; if the service explicitly offered no export, support cannot be assumed to reconstruct the old database.
For a disputed or unfulfilled charge, contact the game’s official support and the store that processed the transaction with your receipt details. Ask what remedy is available in your jurisdiction rather than asserting that every shutdown requires a refund. If a subscription is still renewing, stop it in the billing store first, then ask support about any charge made after the service became unavailable.
Do not delete a still-accessible game profile while investigating. Pokémon TCG Pocket’s support information warns that in-app save-data deletion is irreversible and removes progress, items, and Poké gold. That device-transfer guidance is not a promise that Pocket data would survive a future service shutdown; it only explains the consequences of deleting data now.
Does a Pokémon shutdown delete the whole Pokémon Trainer Central account?
Not necessarily. Pokémon’s Pokémon TV sunset information says the shared account remained available while service-specific watch history became inaccessible. A game notice may follow a different policy, so check that game’s wording instead of inferring account deletion or survival from another title.
How can you tell whether an item will migrate?
Look for an itemized eligibility list and quantity caps, not a general statement about “your collection.” TCG Online’s four-copy card limit, one-per-item limits for many accessories, and exclusions for currencies and saved decks show why each category must be checked independently.
Is a refund automatic when a Pokémon game closes?
No automatic, universal refund rule is established by these examples. The payment platform, the game’s terms, the closure notice, and local consumer law all matter; preserve proof of purchase and ask the relevant support channel what remedy applies.

Can I rely on a Pokémon game I already downloaded?
Only when the publisher explicitly documents offline operation after shutdown. Rumble Rush could not be played from a previously installed copy, so an app icon or local files alone are not evidence that progress or purchases remain usable.
What should I do if a premium pass keeps charging after I delete the app?
Open the Apple, Google, Nintendo, or other store account that owns the subscription and cancel renewal there. Deleting the app or save data does not itself terminate a store-billed pass, as Pokémon TCG Pocket’s support guidance explains.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFrequently Asked Questions
Can Pokémon Support restore data from a closed game if I still know my login?
A working login is not a backup of a game’s server database. Restoration depends on an official migration or export path for that specific title; where Pokémon says data is not exportable, a password alone does not create a recovery route.
Do TCG Online code cards recreate cards that were excluded from migration?
No. A physical-product code can provide a new Live reward when eligible, but it does not restore excluded Online inventory or convert Card Dex, Rumble Rush, or Pocket data. Codes are one-time redemptions and their Live reward may differ.
What evidence is useful when disputing a purchase after shutdown?
Keep the store receipt, transaction date, product description, account identifier, and the closure notice that explains what was or was not delivered. Send those records to both the game’s support channel and the payment platform when appropriate, while recognizing that the available remedy depends on the terms and law that apply to the purchase.
Does changing devices preserve Pokémon TCG Pocket progress?
Pocket’s support guidance describes linking a Nintendo, Google, or eligible Apple account to transfer save data between devices. That device-transfer feature is separate from any future shutdown policy and does not make deleting save data reversible.
