Pokémon Card Grading Compared: Choosing PSA, CGC, or Beckett

PSA is the default choice when you expect to sell, because it is the most established comparison point in the Pokémon completed-sales data cited here. CGC is usually the lower-fee route for budget submissions or a personal collection. Beckett is the specialist choice when four visible subgrades—or the possibility, but never the promise, of a Black Label—matters most.

Those recommendations depend on the card, its condition, your budget and your objective. A PSA Gem Mint 10, CGC Gem Mint 10, CGC Pristine 10 and Beckett Black Label 10 are different outcomes, not interchangeable versions of the same “10.” The U.S. service snapshot below was checked October 30, 2026; fees, availability and estimates can change.

Beckett / BGS Collectors who want four subgrades and a shot at a Black Label Centering, corners, edges and surface subgrades; Black Label requires perfect 10s Express $79.95 per card and marked Submit Now. Base, Standard and Priority marked Sold Out 15 business days for Express Oct 2026

These are direct U.S. submission listings, not an all-in cost calculation. Outbound and return shipping, insurance, selling fees and any optional services are additional.

Is PSA or CGC better for Pokémon cards?

Choose PSA when resale liquidity and familiar market labeling outweigh the higher fee. Choose CGC when the lower listed tiers make grading economical or when the slab is primarily for your own collection. Neither is universally better: a card that is inexpensive, borderline in condition or intended to stay in a binder may not justify any grading fee.

Why PSA is the default resale reference

PSA’s current U.S. page lists Standard at $59.99 per card with a maximum insured value of $1,000 and an estimated 70–80 business-day turnaround. The same page labels Value services temporarily paused, even though a $39.99 Value price is displayed; a displayed price is not evidence that the tier can be booked. PSA also lists Express at $199 and includes Grader Notes with that service. See the PSA trading-card grading services page for the live status before mailing anything.

The resale case is about comparability, not a guaranteed premium. PSA’s label is common in completed-sale searches, so buyers often have more directly comparable examples. A PSA grade still does not promise a sale price, a grade or a completion date.

Why CGC can make sense for a collection

CGC lists Bulk at $17 per card with a 25-card minimum and a $500 maximum value, Economy at $20 with a $1,000 maximum, and Standard at $55 with a $3,000 maximum. The estimated working-day turnarounds are 150, 90 and 10 respectively. CGC states that “Turnaround times are estimates only and are NOT guaranteed.” The lower entry fees can be useful when the purpose is protection and organization rather than maximizing a future sale, but shipping and the number of cards required can change the arithmetic.

Where the current pages create confusion

Some older comparison pages repeat a 90–100-business-day PSA Standard estimate. The official U.S. page retrieved October 30, 2026 lists 70–80 business days, so use the official page rather than an undated secondary table. Beckett also shows prices for tiers that are marked sold out; a listed price does not mean that tier accepts submissions today.

What is the difference between a PSA 10, CGC 10 and Beckett 10?

The number is not a common scale across companies. Each grader applies its own standards and label names, so compare the exact designation, not just the numeral.

PSA Gem Mint 10

PSA says, “A PSA Gem Mint 10 card is a virtually perfect card.” Its published standard gives an approximate centering tolerance of no worse than 55/45 on the front and 75/25 on the reverse, while also acknowledging a subjective eye-appeal component. The detailed criteria are in PSA’s grading standards. Centering alone cannot assure a 10; corners, edges, surface and overall presentation still matter.

CGC Gem Mint 10 and Pristine 10

CGC separates Gem Mint 10 from Pristine 10. Gem Mint 10 uses an approximate 55/45 front and 75/25 reverse centering tolerance, while Pristine 10 requires 50/50 centering and has its own special label. A CGC Pristine 10 is therefore a distinct top designation, not simply another company’s wording for Gem Mint.

Beckett subgrades and Black Label

Beckett displays separate scores for centering, corners, edges and surface. Its published grades include Gem Mint 9.5 and Pristine 10; a Black Label is reserved for perfect 10s. The published Black Label centering criterion is 50/50 on the front and at least 55/45 on the back. A BGS 10 does not automatically receive a Black Label, and a BGS 9.5 should not be treated as equivalent to another grader’s 10.

Is Beckett Black Label better than PSA 10?

It can command more in some sales, but “better” depends on whether the card actually earns that exact label and whether buyers for that card pay for it. A Black Label is a special Beckett outcome, not a grade every clean-looking card receives.

Folio’s Pokémon-specific analysis compared median completed-sale prices for the same cards, requiring at least three completed sales per compared label, as of October 5, 2026. It reported CGC Gem Mint 10 at 0.44× the PSA 10 median, BGS 9.5 at 0.60×, and BGS Pristine 10 at 1.53× the PSA 10 median across 96 qualifying cards. Those are observational ratios for selected cards and labels, not a price list or a probability forecast. Folio also reported that Beckett awarded a 10 to a median 0.6% of copies in its qualifying population-report comparisons; that selected-sample median is not an individual card’s odds.

The practical implication is asymmetric: a BGS Pristine or Black Label can be highly desirable, while submitting a card merely because it looks good does not create a reliable path to that result. If you would be disappointed with a BGS 9.5 or a non-Black BGS 10, price the downside before choosing Beckett.

How much does it cost to grade a Pokémon card?

The advertised per-card fee is only the first line item. Add shipping to the grader, return shipping, insurance, selling expenses and the value of waiting for the card to come back.

Read value limits correctly

PSA’s listed tiers use a maximum insured value, while CGC’s tiers use fair-market-value limits. Those labels are not identical contractual concepts. Do not assume that a $1,000 PSA maximum and a $1,000 CGC limit are calculated or applied in exactly the same way; read the selected service’s current terms.

Turnaround is an estimate, not a delivery date

Business or working days generally describe the grading service after the submission enters the relevant workflow. They are not a promise that the card will be back at your door on that date. Intake, shipping in both directions and any service-level change can extend the total calendar time.

When a small fee difference is not decisive

A $20 versus $55 grading fee matters most for low-value cards and large batches. For a valuable card, the larger financial variables are the likely grade, the exact card’s sold prices and the cost of tying up the card while it is away. A cheaper tier is not automatically more profitable if its turnaround, value limit or submission minimum does not fit your situation.

Is my Pokémon card worth grading?

Estimate the economics for the specific card instead of applying a blanket price threshold. A card is a candidate when the plausible graded-sale proceeds justify fees, shipping, selling costs and the risk of receiving a lower grade than hoped.

  1. Identify the exact card. Record set, card number, language, foil or non-foil treatment, promo status, edition and any print or artwork variant. “Charizard” or “Pikachu” is not precise enough for a sold-price comparison.
  2. Inspect condition under neutral light. Look at centering, corners, edges, surface scratches, print lines, dents, whitening and evidence of handling. A 10× loupe can help inspection, but it is an inspection aid, not proof of a 10.
  3. Set plausible grades. Use a range rather than one optimistic outcome. For example, calculate what happens if the card receives the grade you hope for and one or two lower grades that its visible defects could support.
  4. Check completed sales. Compare the same card, language, variant and grade. Use several completed examples rather than an unsold asking price, and note the sale date and marketplace conditions.
  5. Subtract every cost. Include the grading fee, outbound and return shipping, insurance, selling fees, taxes where applicable and the value of waiting. Compare the result with selling the card raw or keeping it.

Population counts can provide context, but they are not a substitute for prices. CGC cautions that population counts are not indicators of value or rarity, and a small population may reflect fewer submissions rather than scarcity in the underlying card.

Which grader fits each common scenario?

A valuable card intended for resale

Start with PSA and the exact card’s completed sales. Compare plausible PSA outcomes with CGC Gem Mint, CGC Pristine and Beckett outcomes only when enough same-card sales exist to make the comparison meaningful. A high-value card may justify a higher tier or insurance, but no grader can promise a premium.

An inexpensive modern card or a keepsake

First ask whether encapsulation itself is worth the total cost. CGC’s lower listed fees can improve the fit for a personal collection, particularly when several cards meet its Bulk minimum. If the card’s raw value is modest, grading may still be uneconomic after shipping even when the per-card fee looks attractive.

An exceptionally clean card where subgrades matter

Beckett is the natural fit when you want centering, corners, edges and surface shown separately. Treat a Black Label as an upside outcome, not the plan on which the submission’s economics depend. If a BGS 9.5 would make the project unprofitable, do not submit solely because the card looks flawless in casual viewing.

How should you compare resale evidence?

Use completed sales for the exact card and label, then apply the evidence to your own costs. Folio’s ratios are useful context because they compare the same cards, but their sample selection and October 5, 2026 cutoff matter.

  • Match the card’s language and variant; an English base card, Japanese release, stamped promo and parallel foil can have separate markets.
  • Match the grade designation exactly: PSA Gem Mint 10, CGC Gem Mint 10, CGC Pristine 10, BGS 9.5 and BGS Pristine 10 are different comparables.
  • Prefer several completed sales over one spectacular result.
  • Separate a sale price from your net proceeds after marketplace and payment fees.
  • Do not infer that PSA always sells for more; Folio’s BGS Pristine sample is a counterexample.

PSA maintains an auction-prices resource, but any price tool should be treated as historical evidence rather than a guarantee for your listing. Market demand, timing, card presentation and buyer confidence can move the result.

How do you pack a Pokémon card for grading?

Protect the card from movement, pressure and moisture, and follow the chosen grader’s current submission instructions. CGC’s published sequence is a useful baseline.

  1. Place the card in a clean protective sleeve.
  2. Put the sleeved card in a semi-rigid holder appropriate for grading submissions. A standard-size semi-rigid trading-card holder is the relevant format; do not force the card into an undersized holder.
  3. Sandwich the holder between pieces of cardboard larger than the cards.
  4. Add cushioning so the package cannot shift, but do not bind or compress the cards tightly enough to damage edges or corners.
  5. Put the protected stack in a sturdy box, seal it securely and use the shipping and insurance method required by the grader.

The packing instructions above are specifically supported by CGC’s shipping-to-CGC guidance. If you choose PSA or Beckett, check that company’s current submission directions instead of assuming every packaging rule is identical.

What can go wrong, and how do you avoid it?

  • Submitting a paused or sold-out tier: verify that the service is marked available on the live page before preparing payment and postage.
  • Confusing a displayed price with an eligible tier: PSA’s displayed Value price is paired with a temporary pause; Beckett displays prices on some sold-out tiers.
  • Budgeting only the grading fee: add both shipping legs, insurance and selling costs before deciding that grading is profitable.
  • Assuming every 10 is equivalent: record the full designation and compare like with like.
  • Using population as a price forecast: population reflects reported graded copies, not guaranteed demand or rarity.
  • Overpacking: movement is bad, but excessive pressure can damage corners, edges or surfaces.
  • Relying on a promised date or grade: the companies publish estimates and standards, not guarantees.

How we compared these graders

The recommendations weigh the factors that change the decision for a Pokémon card owner: intended resale versus keeping, likely condition and grade ceiling, the exact meaning of each top label, currently open service tiers, grading fee and value limit, estimated turnaround, subgrade preference, completed sales for the exact card, and the full packing and shipping cost. The right choice is the one whose label, economics and availability match your card—not the one with the most impressive headline number.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are grading turnaround estimates calendar days?

No. The listed figures are business or working days and are not door-to-door delivery commitments. Intake time and shipping in both directions can make the total calendar time longer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does PSA’s maximum insured value mean?

It is the maximum value stated for that PSA service tier’s insurance framework, not a guaranteed selling price for the card. It should not be treated as interchangeable with another grader’s fair-market-value limit.

Why do the card’s language and variant matter in sold-price research?

Collectors often price English, Japanese, stamped-promo and parallel versions as separate markets. A sale for a visually similar but different release can therefore give a misleading break-even estimate.

Do I need a loupe before sending a card?

No. A loupe is optional and can help you inspect print lines, scratches and edge wear. It cannot predict a grade, so use it as part of a condition check rather than as evidence that a card will receive a 10.
