Use Playwright Test to capture important pages and interface states, then compare later runs with a screenshot baseline that a person has checked against the intended design. That last review matters especially for AI-generated apps: Playwright can detect a visual change, but its first-run baseline does not tell you whether the generated design was correct. Start with a small set of representative desktop, mobile, content-heavy, and interactive states; make their inputs repeatable; and review every meaningful difference before accepting it.

What does visual testing catch—and what does it not?

Visual testing compares a rendered page or component with an approved reference image. It can flag changes such as unexpected spacing, text wrapping, missing assets, clipping, or a layout shift. It does not establish that the original design was good, that an AI followed your brief, or that the page works correctly.

With Playwright Test, expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() is the direct way to make a screenshot assertion. On the first run, Playwright creates a reference image; later runs compare new captures against it. The first image is therefore a proposed baseline—not an automatic approval. Inspect it against the product brief or approved design before committing it. Playwright explains its visual comparison and snapshot workflow.

Keep visual assertions alongside, not instead of, functional and accessibility checks. A screenshot can look unchanged even if a button no longer works, and a pixel comparison cannot establish that a screen reader can use the page. BrowserStack likewise describes visual testing as complementary to functional testing; Playwright cautions that automated accessibility tests do not find every accessibility problem.

How should I choose pages, viewports, and states?

Choose a small coverage matrix that represents meaningful ways people see and use the app. A few deliberate captures are more useful than snapshots of every route in one default state.

Capture What it helps reveal Example
Representative desktop page Broad layout changes, missing content, and alignment issues A dashboard at the team’s standard desktop viewport
Mobile-sized view Overflow, clipped controls, awkward wrapping, and responsive layout issues The same dashboard at a 390 × 844 viewport
Content-heavy state How a longer title, dense data, or populated panel affects layout A list with enough rows to exercise its intended design
Interaction state Whether the post-interaction appearance remains as intended An open menu or a form displaying validation errors

Use a page screenshot when the whole layout is under review. Use a locator screenshot when you want to isolate a component, such as a navigation panel or card, so unrelated page changes do not dominate the comparison. Playwright supports both page and locator screenshot assertions; its page assertion options include a full-page option when the visible viewport is not enough.

Name captures after the route and state they represent, such as dashboard-mobile.png or settings-error-state.png. Explicit names make it easier to see what a changed image is meant to protect. For an AI-generated interface, review the initial image for the basics the brief requires: clipping or overflow, missing assets, inconsistent spacing, and unexpected text wrapping. A test can protect a reviewed decision; it cannot make that decision for you.

How do I add a first Playwright screenshot test?

Initialize Playwright Test in the app repository, configure it to start the app, and add one assertion for a route you can review. Playwright documents npm init playwright@latest as its setup command. The example below assumes a development server that starts with npm run dev and a real /dashboard route; replace those with your app’s command and route.

npm init playwright@latest

During initialization, choose TypeScript if you want to use the examples below. Configure playwright.config.ts with the app’s start command and base URL:

import { defineConfig } from '@playwright/test';

export default defineConfig({
  testDir: './tests',
  use: {
    baseURL: 'http://127.0.0.1:3000',
  },
  webServer: {
    command: 'npm run dev',
    url: 'http://127.0.0.1:3000',
    reuseExistingServer: !process.env.CI,
  },
});

This configuration makes the test’s page.goto('/dashboard') relative to the configured base URL. If your development server uses another port or command, change both values to match it. The test runner, rather than a browser screenshot utility by itself, is required for Playwright screenshot assertions.

Create tests/dashboard.spec.ts:

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

test.use({
  viewport: { width: 390, height: 844 },
  colorScheme: 'light',
});

test('dashboard mobile layout', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('/dashboard');
  await expect(
    page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Dashboard' })
  ).toBeVisible();
  await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('dashboard-mobile.png', {
    animations: 'disabled',
  });
});

Replace the heading and route with elements that actually exist in the generated app. The heading assertion is a useful sanity check that the intended screen loaded, but it does not prove the screenshot is correct. Run the test with npx playwright test. Review the first capture visually against the approved design before treating the generated reference as the expected result.

For a component-specific check, make the assertion against a locator instead of the whole page:

await expect(page.getByRole('navigation')).toHaveScreenshot('primary-navigation.png');

For content below the fold, use the page assertion’s full-page option, for example await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('dashboard-full.png', { fullPage: true });. Choose full-page capture when the complete document is part of the intended comparison; a viewport capture is usually a more focused check of what a user sees at a given scroll position.

How do I keep screenshot comparisons stable?

Make the page state and rendering conditions as repeatable as you can before adding more snapshots. A screenshot can differ because of changing content or a different rendering environment even when the app code did not change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Fix the viewport and display settings. Set the viewport, color scheme, and any relevant device or rendering settings explicitly. Playwright documents device and viewport emulation; consistent settings make it clearer whether a diff came from the interface or the capture configuration.
  • Replace changing network data. If a page shows live API results, intercept the relevant request and return a known fixture for the visual test. Otherwise, the screenshot can change when the data changes, even when the layout is identical.
  • Stabilize app-visible time. If the page displays a current date, relative time, or other clock-dependent content, make the test’s time deterministic using Playwright’s documented clock controls.
  • Set locale or timezone when formatting matters. Dates, numbers, and other formatted values can differ with locale or timezone. Choose values that match the state the screenshot is meant to protect.
  • Handle animation deliberately. Playwright screenshot assertions wait for consecutive captures to stabilize and, by default, disable CSS/Web Animations and hide the caret. This helps with common sources of noise, but it does not make changing server data deterministic. If a page has JavaScript-driven motion or a transition that affects the intended state, decide explicitly how to reach or pause that state.
  • Use masks sparingly. Playwright lets you mask located elements in a capture. A mask can help when a small region is inherently volatile, but the hidden area is no longer meaningfully compared. Prefer fixing the source of variation when practical.

Do not confuse “the screenshot stopped changing” with “the app’s inputs are deterministic.” A page can settle visually while still showing a different list, date, or user state on the next run. The more variable the data, the less useful an unexplained diff becomes.

How do I review and update a baseline safely?

Keep reference screenshots with the tests, commit them, and review their changes like code. When an assertion fails, inspect the expected image, the actual image, and the difference image before deciding what to do. A difference may be a real regression, an intended design change, or uncontrolled variation in the test.

If a design change is intentional, update the reference only after checking that the new screenshot matches the approved result. Playwright documents npx playwright test --update-snapshots to regenerate snapshots. Treat that command as an approval step after inspection, not as a generic way to make a failing test pass. An automatically refreshed baseline can simply preserve a new design mistake.

For reliable comparisons, generate and compare screenshots under consistent rendering conditions. Playwright’s documentation states: “For consistent screenshots, run tests in the same environment where the baseline screenshots were generated.” Differences in host operating system and other environment details can affect rendering even without an application code change. See Playwright’s guidance on screenshot consistency.

How do I run visual tests in CI?

Run the same Playwright test suite in CI and retain its report so a failed capture can be reviewed. Playwright’s documented CI sequence includes installing project dependencies, installing browsers with their operating-system dependencies, running the tests, and keeping the test report as an artifact.

npm ci
npx playwright install --with-deps
npx playwright test

Use the same environment for baseline generation and comparison where possible. If a test passes locally but fails in CI, first check whether the browser, host environment, fonts, viewport, locale, timezone, or displayed data differ. A screenshot failure is evidence that the rendered result differed; it is not, on its own, proof of a code regression.

When a diff looks noisy, find and address the source of variability before relaxing comparison settings. Playwright provides threshold for pixel-color difference and maxDiffPixels or maxDiffPixelRatio to bound how many pixels may differ. These settings answer different questions: changing the color threshold affects how much a pixel may vary; changing a differing-pixel limit affects how many pixels may vary. Raising limits without understanding the cause can let a real visual regression pass.

What should I do when a screenshot test fails?

Use the failure as a prompt to compare the actual, expected, and difference images, then trace the discrepancy before changing the baseline or tolerance.

Should I use Playwright alone or a hosted review service?

Playwright Test on its own is a practical starting point when the team is comfortable keeping screenshots in the repository, owning the comparison environment, and reviewing baseline changes through its existing workflow. A hosted service may be worth evaluating if shared review, archived captures, or cross-browser visual review matters to your team; it is optional, not a prerequisite for a first screenshot assertion.

Approach Documented role Consider it when
Playwright Test alone Local screenshot assertions with reference images that can be version-controlled You want to begin with your existing test runner and can manage baseline review and consistent CI rendering.
Chromatic with Playwright Cloud-stored snapshots, commit-linked review, interactive archives, and a review application A shared review interface and hosted snapshot history fit your workflow. See Chromatic’s Playwright documentation.
BrowserStack Percy Builds, baselines, change approvals, and responsive or cross-browser visual review You want to evaluate a managed path for review across browsers or responsive views. Its optional Visual Review Agent is described as helping interpret differences, but reviewers still decide whether a change is intended. See Percy’s visual testing overview.

Compare these approaches by who owns the baselines, whether review is local or hosted, how consistently rendering environments can be reproduced, which routes, states, widths, and browsers need coverage, and whether reviewers need a shared approval interface. Vendor documentation describes product capabilities; it does not establish that any service finds every visual defect or is independently superior.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a screenshot from an API rather than a Playwright screenshot assertion, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A capture API can return an image, but it does not replace a reviewed visual-test baseline or the comparison and approval step in this guide. Its request accepts a URL and returns a screenshot; for visual testing, use the result as an input to the review workflow that fits your project.

For example, this cURL request saves a WebP capture of a public page:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo says it accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots a month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. How much visual coverage should I add first?

Start with the few captures that protect the most important user-facing decisions: one representative route at a desktop width, the same route at a mobile-sized viewport, one state with dense or variable content, and one meaningful post-interaction state. Add more only when a specific route, breakpoint, or interaction is important enough to justify a reviewable baseline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This keeps the first addition to an existing functional suite focused: one test file, a small number of named screenshots, and a clear approval step. As the app changes, expand coverage where visual defects would matter, while keeping fixtures and rendering conditions consistent. The goal is not the largest snapshot count; it is a set of references the team understands and can trust.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Playwright screenshot assertions with a script outside Playwright Test?

The documented toHaveScreenshot() assertion is provided by Playwright Test, so initialize and run the test runner for this workflow. A standalone screenshot capture can still produce an image, but it does not by itself provide the assertion-and-baseline comparison described here.

Do I need a physical phone to begin checking a mobile layout?

No. Playwright supports viewport and device emulation, so you can start by capturing a representative mobile-sized viewport in the browser. Emulation is a useful responsive check, but it is not a claim that every real device or browser has been covered.

Can a screenshot test tell whether the AI followed my design prompt?

No. It reports visual differences against the chosen reference; it does not judge whether either image fulfills the prompt. Review the initial generated screen against the brief before approving it as a baseline.
