Sony has not announced a confirmed lineup of returning PlayStation franchises. It has, however, said it is actively looking for ways to use older intellectual property, and a recent report links an early Ape Escape project to Evening Star, the team behind Sonic Mania and Penny’s Big Breakaway. The same report describes a possible Killzone remaster or remake and a broader effort to license dormant series to smaller studios. Both claims remain unconfirmed, while separate reports about Uncharted and fan-requested series such as inFAMOUS, Sly Cooper, MotorStorm and Resistance are still speculation.
Is Sony actually bringing back classic PlayStation franchises?
Not officially. In a December 2024 Famitsu interview reported by VGC, PlayStation co-CEO Hermen Hulst said, “The various IPs that we own are an important asset to PlayStation.” He also said Sony continually considers opportunities to use past intellectual property while creating new franchises, including through external developers.

That is a confirmed company position, not an announcement of particular games. Sony has not published a release slate naming Ape Escape, Killzone, Uncharted, inFAMOUS or any other dormant PlayStation series.
What are the latest Ape Escape and Killzone reports?
What is reported about Ape Escape?
VGC reported on October 7, 2026 that sources and journalist Jeff Gerstmann linked an Ape Escape revival to Evening Star. The studio is known for Sonic Mania and Penny’s Big Breakaway, making this a potential example of Sony using an external specialist rather than assigning the project to one of its established internal teams.

The report characterizes the project as only getting started and not close to release. It does not establish a title, game format, platforms, launch window or Sony approval. Until Sony or the developer makes a direct announcement, “Ape Escape is reportedly in early development” is the strongest defensible description.
What is reported about Killzone?
The same VGC report says a Killzone remaster or remake is reportedly in early development. It places that possibility within a wider plan to license dormant franchises to smaller third-party studios. Sony has not confirmed the developer, whether the project is a remaster or a full remake, or when it might ship.

A precedent shows that this route is possible; it does not verify the Killzone claim.
Are Uncharted and inFAMOUS revivals confirmed?
What is known about Uncharted?
Separate reporting has associated a possible Uncharted revival with Naughty Dog. That report is unconfirmed, and no project name, team structure, timing or platform has been announced by Sony or Naughty Dog.
What is known about inFAMOUS?
A May 2026 report quoting insider NateTheHate said there is “truth to Sony exploring & considering reviving some of their older, unused IPs.” The same account said he had not personally heard that an inFAMOUS revival was happening. That makes inFAMOUS, like Sly Cooper, MotorStorm and Resistance, a fan-requested possibility rather than a named project supported by direct confirmation.
Which possible revivals have the strongest evidence?
| Franchise | Evidence status | Reported revival route | Timing or certainty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ape Escape | Sourced report, not confirmed by Sony | External development linked to Evening Star | Reportedly just starting; not close to release |
| Killzone | Sourced report, not confirmed by Sony | Possible remaster or remake through a licensing push | Reportedly early development |
| Uncharted | Separate unconfirmed report | Associated with Naughty Dog | No announced schedule |
| inFAMOUS | Insider speculation only | No named developer or format | The quoted insider had not heard of an active revival |
The practical difference is important: an official statement confirms Sony’s interest in its catalogue, while a sourced report may identify a project that can still change or stop. Fan discussion alone does not establish development.
Why would Sony revisit older PlayStation IP now?
Sony’s corporate strategy emphasizes maximizing the value of its intellectual property and creating experiences across physical and digital spaces. Its Game & Network Services business reported sales of ¥4,685.7 billion and operating income of ¥463.3 billion for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026. Those are company-wide results, not evidence that any particular revival has been approved.
There is also a demonstrated audience case for combining recognizable PlayStation history with newer characters. Hulst said Astro Bot sold 1.5 million copies in its first nine weeks, earned a 94 Metacritic score, and drew buyers in which nearly 40% were first-time PlayStation purchasers or had not bought a PlayStation game in two years. Those figures suggest that a carefully presented PlayStation property can reach beyond long-time fans, although they do not predict sales for an Ape Escape or Killzone project.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What form could a classic-franchise revival take?
A revival can mean several materially different products:
- Remaster: an existing game updated for modern hardware, usually with improved resolution, performance or compatibility.
- Remake: a substantially rebuilt version that may change assets, systems or presentation while retaining the original’s premise.
- New entry: an original sequel, reboot or spin-off that uses the franchise’s characters and world.
The available reports do not identify which approach Sony would use for Ape Escape, and they describe Killzone as either a remaster or remake. No reported project has a confirmed platform list, price or release date.

How should fans interpret future announcements?
- Look for a statement from Sony, the named developer or an official PlayStation channel.
- Check whether the announcement identifies the project’s format, platforms and development team.
- Treat “sources say,” insider posts and trademark activity as leads, not confirmation.
- Separate a formal reveal from a release date; projects described as early can change substantially.
For now, the confirmed news is Sony’s willingness to explore its back catalogue. Ape Escape and Killzone are the most specific current reports, but neither has been announced, and the status of Uncharted, inFAMOUS and other requested series is even less certain.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does “early development” mean for a reported PlayStation revival?
It generally indicates that a project may still be in concept, pre-production or initial production. Teams, scope and even the decision to release can change before a public reveal, so an early report should not be treated as a promise of launch.
Can an outside studio make a game using a PlayStation franchise?
Yes. A rights holder can license a property to an external developer or publisher while retaining approval over the brand. Sony’s reported use of this model for dormant series is why the developer attached to a rumor matters, but licensing alone does not confirm a specific project.
Would a revived PlayStation game automatically come to PS5?
No. Sony has not announced platforms for the reported projects. Platform plans are decided separately from whether a revival is approved and can depend on the project’s technology, audience and business strategy.
Why do fans hear about several dormant franchises at once?
A broad statement about exploring older intellectual property can generate speculation around many recognizable names. Only a directly attributable announcement can establish that one of those discussions became an active, public game project.
