Yes, PULSE Explore earbuds work with compatible Bluetooth phones and tablets, Windows PCs and Macs through the included PlayStation Link USB adapter, PS5, PS4, and PlayStation Portal. A phone connects directly over Bluetooth; a computer or PS5 normally uses the adapter; Portal connects directly over PlayStation Link. Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 can potentially provide Bluetooth listening, but official documentation does not certify this exact earbud model. Xbox is not listed by Sony as a supported PlayStation Link device.
Which devices can use PULSE Explore, and how do they connect?
The connection method matters more than the word “compatible.” Sony documents separate Bluetooth and PlayStation Link routes, and the included adapter is required for the main computer and console setup.

Sony’s official instructions are the reference for the phone, computer and PlayStation procedures: PULSE Explore connection support. Its broader Link documentation covers supported PlayStation hardware at the PlayStation Link support page.
How do I connect PULSE Explore to an iPhone, iPad or Android device?
Use Bluetooth directly; the PlayStation Link USB adapter is not needed. Sony cautions that compatibility varies by device, so a phone’s Bluetooth specification alone is not a guarantee.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Put both earbuds in their charging case.
- Leave the lid open and hold the case’s PlayStation Link button for about eight seconds.
- Release the button when the indicator starts flashing blue.
- Open the phone or tablet’s Bluetooth settings and choose PULSE Explore.
- Accept the pairing prompt and play a short audio clip to confirm the connection.
If the earbuds do not appear, turn Bluetooth off and on again, keep the case close to the device, and repeat the eight-second hold. Remove an old PULSE Explore entry from the device’s saved Bluetooth list before trying again. These are standard recovery actions around Sony’s documented pairing sequence; they do not change Sony’s warning that not all devices work with the earbuds.
Do I need the dongle for a Windows PC or Mac?
For Sony’s documented computer gaming connection, yes. Use the included PlayStation Link USB adapter rather than treating ordinary computer Bluetooth as an equivalent route.
- Insert the adapter into a USB Type-A port on the Windows PC or Mac.
- Take the earbuds out of their case. The supplied earbuds and adapter are already paired.
- Open the operating system’s sound output settings.
- Choose PlayStation Link Adapter if it is not selected automatically.
- Start playback and adjust volume from the computer or the earbuds’ volume controls.
Sony also mentions an optional PlayStation Link PC Driver for Windows. The adapter provides the USB audio path; a computer with no available Type-A port needs a compatible physical USB solution, but Sony’s instructions specifically describe a Type-A connection. One adapter is included with PULSE Explore. A second adapter is optional if you want one left in a PS5 and another left in a PC or Mac instead of moving it.
How do PULSE Explore earbuds work with PS5?
PS5 uses PlayStation Link through the included USB adapter. Insert the adapter into the console, remove the earbuds from their case, and select the Link audio device in PS5 sound settings if the console does not select it automatically.
The adapter is a separate connection from Bluetooth. That distinction is why a phone can pair directly without the dongle, while the standard PS5 route needs it. Keep the adapter in a front or rear USB port that remains accessible if you frequently move it between devices.

Will PULSE Explore work on PS4?
Yes, Sony’s Link support information lists compatible Link devices working with PS4 through the adapter. The connection is not identical to PS5 feature-for-feature.

Can I use PULSE Explore with PlayStation Portal?
Portal connects to PULSE Explore directly over PlayStation Link, so no separate USB adapter is needed for Portal itself. This is different from a PS5, where the adapter is the Link bridge.
If you also use a PS5 or computer, remember that a single pair of earbuds cannot play two PlayStation Link hosts simultaneously. Sony describes pairing and switching between adapters, but only one Link connection is active for listening at a time.
Can Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 connect to PULSE Explore?
Treat Switch compatibility as conditional Bluetooth listening, not a confirmed PULSE Explore certification. Nintendo documents Bluetooth audio using the A2DP profile and SBC codec for Switch and Switch 2, but it does not certify individual earbud models in the reviewed support material.

The original Nintendo Switch requires system version 13.0.0 or later for Bluetooth audio. Nintendo also states that Bluetooth microphone input is not supported, so the earbuds’ microphone should not be assumed to work for Switch voice chat. The official guidance does not establish an exact-model PULSE Explore pairing result, a dedicated Switch USB-dongle method, or codec behavior for these earbuds. See Nintendo’s Bluetooth audio support information for the console-side requirements.
Do PULSE Explore earbuds work on Xbox?
Xbox is not documented as a supported PlayStation Link device by Sony. The included adapter should not be presented as an Xbox solution, and the reviewed official sources do not confirm a direct Bluetooth pairing route for Xbox consoles.
If Xbox compatibility is essential, choose an audio product explicitly listed by its manufacturer for your Xbox model. PULSE Explore’s confirmed support should be limited to the Bluetooth and PlayStation Link routes Sony describes.
Can I hear PS5 audio and a phone at the same time?
Yes. Sony allows one PlayStation Link source and one Bluetooth source to be connected simultaneously, such as PS5 game audio through Link while a phone call arrives over Bluetooth. This does not mean two PlayStation Link hosts can play at once.
The earbuds’ volume buttons adjust the PlayStation Link audio. Adjust the Bluetooth source’s volume on the phone itself. If the phone call takes priority, use the phone’s call controls; the exact behavior can vary with the phone’s operating system and Bluetooth implementation.

How many devices can PULSE Explore remember?
Sony states that the earbuds can pair with up to eight PlayStation Link USB adapters, with only one Link connection active at a time. They can pair with up to 10 Bluetooth devices, again with one Bluetooth device active at a time.
Those are manufacturer pairing capacities, not independent usage measurements. They are useful when the earbuds move among a PS5, a computer, Portal and several mobile devices, but they do not remove the need to select the intended active source.
What battery life and accessory limits should I expect?
Sony specifies up to five hours of earbud battery life, with up to 10 additional hours supplied by the charging case. “Up to” is a manufacturer specification rather than a guaranteed runtime under every volume level, codec, microphone state or firmware version.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe package includes one PlayStation Link USB adapter. Buying a second adapter is mainly a convenience choice: leave one connected to a PS5 and one to a PC or Mac, then switch the earbuds between the paired hosts. It does not enable simultaneous audio from two Link adapters.

- Phone or tablet: Confirm the case indicator is flashing blue after the approximately eight-second button hold, then select PULSE Explore in Bluetooth settings.
- Windows PC or Mac: Confirm the adapter is firmly inserted in a USB Type-A port and select PlayStation Link Adapter as the output device.
- PS5 or PS4: Verify the included adapter is connected to the console and that the earbuds are removed from the case.
- Portal: Use the Portal’s direct PlayStation Link connection rather than looking for a separate USB adapter.
- Switch: Confirm Bluetooth audio is enabled and, on the original Switch, that system software is version 13.0.0 or later. Pairing remains conditional because Nintendo does not certify this exact model.
- Any device: Forget an old PULSE Explore entry, restart Bluetooth or the host, and retry the documented pairing path. Check Sony’s current support pages if a firmware update changes menu labels or behavior.
Do not infer compatibility from a device merely having Bluetooth or a USB port. Sony’s statement is explicit: “Not all devices work with your earbuds.”
Which setup is right for your situation?
Choose based on where the audio originates:
- For a phone or tablet, use direct Bluetooth and leave the adapter aside.
- For PC or Mac gaming, use the included PlayStation Link adapter and select it as the USB audio output.
- For PS5 or PS4, use that adapter; PS4 has fewer documented controls than PS5.
- For Portal, use its built-in direct PlayStation Link support.
- For Switch or Switch 2, consider the connection experimental until your exact console and firmware pair successfully; do not rely on the microphone.
- For Xbox, regard PULSE Explore as unsupported by the available manufacturer documentation.
Before buying another adapter, decide whether moving the included one is inconvenient. A second adapter improves desk-to-console convenience, but it does not broaden the officially documented console list.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use PULSE Explore for calls on my phone?
Bluetooth pairing supports phone audio, including calls, when the mobile device accepts the earbuds. Call controls and microphone behavior depend on the phone’s operating system; Sony’s simultaneous-audio example specifically describes a phone call alongside PlayStation Link audio.
Does connecting Bluetooth disable PlayStation Link?
No. Sony allows one Bluetooth source and one PlayStation Link source at the same time. The restriction is one active source of each type, not a requirement to disconnect Bluetooth before using a PlayStation device.
Can firmware updates change compatibility?
They can change menus, device behavior or compatibility guidance, so check Sony’s current PULSE Explore and PlayStation Link support pages when setup instructions no longer match your system. The support pages do not promise that an update will add support for an otherwise undocumented console.
Is a second PlayStation Link adapter required for Portal?
No. Portal has direct PlayStation Link support. A second adapter is only a convenience for leaving Link adapters connected to separate equipment such as a PS5 and a computer.
