PlayStation Plus Essential, Extra and Deluxe all include monthly games in Australia. Essential is enough if your main reason for subscribing is to claim those games. Extra adds access to the Game Catalogue, while Deluxe adds the Classics Catalogue and game trials. Monthly games are not an Extra- or Deluxe-only benefit.
This comparison follows Sony’s Australian PlayStation Plus plan page. Tier names and benefits vary by region: the top US tier is called Premium, not Deluxe.

All three tiers in Sony’s Australian lineup—Essential, Extra and Deluxe—include monthly games. Sony describes them as new titles members can claim each month. If you only want that monthly claim benefit, you do not need to pay for Extra or Deluxe just to get it.
The tiers differ in the other games and features they add. Extra includes the Game Catalogue; Deluxe includes that catalogue plus the Classics Catalogue and game trials. Those are separate benefits from the monthly games offer, and the names can be easy to confuse because both involve access to games.

In practical terms, the question is not which tier unlocks monthly games: all three do. It is whether the additional catalogue access and trials in the higher plans are useful enough to justify the price shown for your account. If you are comparing plans because you want a specific monthly title, begin with the monthly offer itself rather than upgrading on the assumption that Extra or Deluxe receives a different set.
What does each Australian tier include?
Sony’s current Australian comparison lists monthly games across all three plans. The table separates that shared benefit from the catalogue and trial features that distinguish the upgrades.
| Benefit | Essential | Extra | Deluxe (Australia) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly games | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Game Catalogue | No | Yes | Yes |
| Classics Catalogue | No | No | Yes |
| Game trials | No | No | Yes |
| Online multiplayer, discounts and cloud storage | Yes | Yes | Yes |
These are the benefits listed on Sony’s Australian plan page. The Game Catalogue and Classics Catalogue are not extra monthly games: they are distinct catalogues of games available through the relevant plan. Their lineups and availability can change, so a title being in a catalogue does not mean it will remain available for the length of your subscription.
The table is useful for separating three different kinds of value. Monthly games are the recurring offer that every tier includes. The Game Catalogue is the principal addition when moving from Essential to Extra. Deluxe retains Extra’s benefits and adds the Classics Catalogue and trials. Online multiplayer, discounts and cloud storage appear across all three, so they do not distinguish one of these tiers from another in Sony’s Australian comparison.
It is also worth avoiding a common shortcut: “more expensive” does not mean “more monthly games.” The plan chart lists the monthly-games benefit for all three tiers, while the higher tiers add other kinds of access. A catalogue game may be available to play on demand under the plan but is not thereby a title you claimed through that month’s offer.
Is Essential enough for monthly games?
Yes. Essential includes the monthly games benefit, so it is the tier to consider if you want to claim the monthly offer without paying for the higher tiers’ catalogues and trials.

Choose based on what you expect to play:
- Choose Essential if the monthly games, online multiplayer, discounts and cloud storage meet your needs.
- Choose Extra if you also want the Game Catalogue’s on-demand selection. That catalogue is the main additional game benefit over Essential.
- Choose Deluxe if you want the Extra benefits plus the Classics Catalogue and game trials, and those additions are worth the additional cost to you.
Upgrading does not unlock monthly games that Essential lacks; all three Australian tiers list that benefit. Compare the plans by the additional features you will use, not by assuming the more expensive plan receives a separate or inherently larger monthly-games entitlement. Sony’s page notes that prices depend on tier and subscription term and directs Australian customers to sign in to see available plans, so check the options shown for your account rather than relying on an old price quote.
A practical way to decide is to write down what you want to do during the subscription. If your plan is to claim the monthly selection and use the shared benefits, Essential covers the stated requirement. If you want to browse and play games from the Game Catalogue as well, compare Extra’s price against how much you expect to use that catalogue. If classics or trial access are specifically important to you, then compare Deluxe with Extra. The upgrade is only useful if its additional features match your habits.
Do not base the decision on a catalogue title you assume will stay indefinitely. Catalogue lineups can change, and a title can have a service removal date. If one specific game is the reason for choosing a plan, check whether it is part of the current monthly offer or the catalogue, and check the terms and availability shown for your region before subscribing.

Sony does not give one universally applicable signed-out Australian Deluxe price on the plan page; it asks customers to sign in to see the plans available to them. That means old screenshots, launch-era price lists, or prices quoted for another country may not reflect the amount or terms currently offered to your account. Compare the options shown when signed in, including the subscription term, instead of assuming a price from an older article still applies.

What is the difference between monthly games and the Game Catalogue?
Monthly games are titles Sony makes available for members to claim during a monthly offer. The Game Catalogue and Classics Catalogue are separate collections included with higher tiers. A game appearing in one of those catalogues is not the same thing as a monthly game you claimed.
The distinction matters if you are deciding whether to upgrade or trying to understand access later. Sony’s guidance says claimed monthly games can be played while the membership remains active. Catalogue games, by contrast, can have service removal dates; a title can leave a catalogue even if your subscription is still active. Check the game’s listing and any stated availability date before relying on a catalogue title as a long-term option.
Think of the monthly offer as a claim opportunity and the catalogue as a changing selection available through a qualifying plan. A game downloaded from a catalogue has not necessarily been claimed as a monthly game. Likewise, a game that appears in a monthly offer should not be assumed to be part of the Game Catalogue. They are different routes to access, with different availability conditions.
This matters most when planning what to play over time. A claimed monthly game remains tied to an active membership, whereas a catalogue title can also become unavailable because it leaves the service. If you are partway through a catalogue game, the relevant listing’s removal date matters even if your membership is in good standing. For a monthly title, check that it was actually added to your library during the offer period and understand that the membership condition still applies.
How do you claim and keep access to monthly games?
Sony says members can claim new monthly titles and add them to their library. Claiming a title gives you access under the membership rules; it does not make the game unrestricted permanent ownership.
- Check the current monthly offer. Look at the PlayStation Plus games page or the offer shown on your console and confirm the game is available in your account’s region.
- Claim the title during its offer window. Sony’s wording is “new titles to claim every month,” so do not assume an unclaimed offer will remain available indefinitely.
- Find the claimed game in your library. If you intend to play later, confirm that the game has been added to the account’s library rather than assuming that browsing or downloading a catalogue game counts as a monthly claim.
- Keep an eligible membership active to play it. Sony’s US FAQ says monthly games added to a member’s library can be played while the membership remains active. If the membership ends, access to those monthly games is not retained as permanent ownership.
Sony’s Australian page explains the monthly claim benefit, while the US PlayStation Plus games FAQ describes the library and active-membership condition. Because that FAQ is US-based, treat it as an explanation of the claim mechanic, not a source for Australian tier names, prices or a promise that every market has identical monthly titles.
Keep the account and region in mind when checking the offer: the monthly selection is not a guarantee that the same titles appear everywhere. Check the game and offer presented for your account rather than relying on a list from a different country. Sony describes the benefit as titles to claim each month, but that wording does not specify a permanent number of games, a fixed platform mix or a promise that any particular game will recur.
Claiming and downloading are also not the same thing as permanent ownership. The key step is adding the monthly title to the account’s library during its offer period. A catalogue game, meanwhile, is played through the relevant catalogue benefit and may have an end date for service availability. Keep those two routes separate when deciding whether you have claimed a monthly game or are simply accessing a catalogue selection.

What happens if a game leaves a catalogue?
A catalogue game can become unavailable through the service on its published removal date, even if your membership has not expired. That differs from a monthly game you claimed: for monthly games, the membership condition remains relevant; for catalogue titles, the service’s availability window is an additional condition.
Before starting a long game from either catalogue, check its listing for a removal date and consider whether you can finish it in time. Do not treat a catalogue download as a permanent library claim. If keeping access to a particular title matters more than playing it through a rotating catalogue, check the game’s other availability options separately; the tier comparison alone cannot promise that it will remain on the service.
This is why the Game Catalogue should not be described as a second monthly-games allowance. It is a selection tied to the service, and its availability can change. A subscription tier can provide access to the catalogue without guaranteeing that every title stays for the full time you subscribe. The title’s listing is the useful place to check for a removal date before committing time to it.
Do all monthly offers include the same number and type of games?
No fixed monthly count or platform mix should be assumed. Sony’s current guidance says PS4 games have been added only intermittently since January 2026, so subscribers should not count on receiving a PS4 title every month. The exact lineup is a changing offer, not a stable tier specification.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Check the monthly selection for the relevant region and month before subscribing solely for a particular title. Sony also notes that PS5 games can be downloaded only to a PS5 console. A PS5 monthly title therefore does not become playable on a PS4 simply because it appears in the monthly offer.
That platform limitation is a separate question from tier eligibility. A PS5 game can be included in a monthly offer available to members, but Sony says it can be downloaded only to a PS5 console. If you have a PS4, verify the platform shown for each game instead of assuming every monthly title will run on your hardware. A PS5 console is relevant only if you need the hardware to play a PS5 monthly game; buying a game disc is not a substitute for the PlayStation Plus membership entitlement.
There is no supported reason to plan around a fixed number of monthly titles or a guaranteed PS4 game each month. Check the current offer when it is announced and use the listings for your account’s region and platform. A tier comparison tells you which plan includes the benefit, not what exact games will be offered in a future month.
Why does PlayStation show Premium instead of Deluxe?
The names are regional. Australia uses Essential, Extra and Deluxe; Sony calls its top tier Premium in the United States. Sony originally described Deluxe as the option for select markets without cloud streaming, and its current Australian comparison does not list the US Premium cloud-streaming benefit for Deluxe.
Recommended Free Tools
That means a US Premium price or feature list should not be used as a direct description of Australian Deluxe. Check the PlayStation Plus page for the country associated with your account and the plan options displayed after signing in. Sony says local pricing varies by tier and subscription term, and the Australian page does not show one universally applicable signed-out Deluxe price.

Premium is not an additional Australian tier to place above Deluxe in this comparison. It is Sony’s name for the top tier in the US. The difference in naming reflects regional plan lineups, so compare the benefits and price on the page for your own account’s market. Do not use a US Premium description to promise a feature—particularly cloud streaming—that Sony’s Australian Deluxe comparison does not list.
Similarly, do not convert a US price into an assumed Australian Deluxe price. The local amount depends on the region, plan and subscription term, and Sony directs Australian customers to sign in for their available options. If your console or account displays a different tier name than an article or screenshot, confirm the country setting and use the plan details presented for that account.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you gift PlayStation Plus?
Sony says PlayStation Store gift cards can be used to buy any PlayStation Plus membership and are available from retailers. A PlayStation Store physical gift card may be a convenient option if you are giving someone money toward a subscription rather than choosing a tier for them. The recipient can then check which plans and terms are available for their own account.
Check the card’s territory and seller before purchasing: a card intended for a different region may not suit the recipient’s account. Some voucher cards also require activation at the register. And confirm that the listing is genuinely for a physical card if that is what you want—Sony’s online-card example delivers an emailed code, so a PlayStation Store gift card listing is not necessarily a mailed item.
A gift card is not a separate PS Plus tier and does not change the benefits attached to the recipient’s subscription. The recipient still chooses among the options offered for their region, and all three Australian tiers include monthly games. For that reason, a Store gift card can avoid guessing whether the recipient wants Essential, Extra or Deluxe, while leaving them to make the tier choice.
What is the practical answer if you are choosing today?
If monthly games are the only feature you want, Essential includes them. Extra is for subscribers who also want the Game Catalogue; Deluxe adds the Classics Catalogue and game trials. The higher tiers may suit your playing habits, but they are not prerequisites for receiving the monthly-games benefit.
Before buying, confirm the tier names and current price for your account’s country, inspect the current month’s games, and check whether a title you care about is a monthly offer or a catalogue game. Those distinctions determine what the plan actually gives you and how long you can expect access to a particular game.
In short: choose Essential for the monthly claim benefit and shared plan features; compare Extra if you want its Game Catalogue; consider Deluxe if you will use its Classics Catalogue and trials. Check the month’s actual offer, your console’s compatibility with the titles, and the local terms before paying. If you are buying for someone else, a territory-appropriate PlayStation Store gift card can let them select their own membership.

Does PS Plus Extra include monthly games?
Yes. Sony’s Australian comparison lists monthly games for Extra as well as Essential and Deluxe. Extra’s additional game benefit is the Game Catalogue, not a separate entitlement required to claim monthly games.

Not as unrestricted permanent ownership. Sony says monthly games added to a member’s library can be played while the membership remains active. Catalogue games are different: they may leave the service on a removal date even if the membership is active.
Why does my PlayStation show Premium instead of Deluxe?
The name depends on region. Sony calls the top US tier Premium; Australia uses Deluxe. Check the plan details for the country associated with your account, because regional prices and benefits are not necessarily the same.
Does PS Plus Deluxe include cloud streaming in Australia?
Sony’s Australian plan comparison does not list the US Premium cloud-streaming benefit for Deluxe. The tier names and feature sets are regional, so use the plan page for the country attached to your account rather than assuming the US Premium description applies.
Can I rely on PS Plus to add a PS4 game every month?
No. Sony says PS4 games have been added only intermittently since January 2026, so a PS4 title is not a dependable monthly guarantee. Check each month’s offer in your own region.
