When a PlayStation Plus Game Catalog or Classics Catalog title leaves, you lose the catalog license to play it. The game is not erased from your console, your purchased DLC is not refunded or deleted, and trophies you already earned remain on your PlayStation Network profile. However, DLC cannot be used until you regain access to the underlying game, and you cannot continue playing the title unless you buy it or have another eligible license.
Your saved progress is a separate issue. A save stored on the console remains there unless you delete it, while cloud access depends on your PlayStation Plus membership and sync settings. The first step is therefore to identify whether the game was a monthly title added to your library or a catalog title that was only available while included in the service.

Which kind of PlayStation Plus game is leaving?
The outcome depends on how the game entered your library. PlayStation Plus has a limited claim window for monthly games, while Game Catalog and Classics Catalog titles are temporary service licenses that can have an announced end date.
| Library type | Where it is included | Access rule | What happens when it leaves |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly games | Essential, Extra and Premium | Add the game during its monthly availability period; it remains playable while you have an eligible active membership. | A monthly announcement ending does not automatically remove a game already added to your library. Access ends if the membership is no longer eligible or another license condition applies. |
| Game Catalog | Extra and Premium | Play while the title is included in the catalog and your membership is active. | The catalog entitlement ends on the departure date. You need a separate game license or another eligible access route to continue. |
| Classics Catalog | Premium | Play while the Classic is included and your Premium membership is active. | The catalog entitlement ends when the title leaves. Any separately purchased game license is unaffected. |
| Streamed catalog game | Premium cloud streaming | Play through streaming while the title and service are available. | Streaming access ends with the catalog listing; DLC and add-ons are not supported while streaming a title. |
PlayStation’s current US plan structure places cloud storage in all three current tiers, Game Catalog access in Extra and Premium, and Classics Catalog access and cloud streaming in Premium. Always check the game’s location in your library before assuming that a catalog rotation affects it.

What happens to DLC and add-ons when the game leaves?
Purchased DLC remains associated with your account, but it is temporarily unusable without access to the base game. PlayStation permits buying add-ons for downloaded Game Catalog titles, yet its current FAQ says access to the associated DLC stops when your membership expires or the content leaves the service.
Buying the game separately, or regaining another eligible entitlement to it, makes the purchased DLC usable again. The add-on is not a standalone game license: owning an expansion, season pass or cosmetic pack does not by itself restore the base title.
Sony Interactive Entertainment’s PlayStation Plus games FAQ states: “Please note DLC and add-on content is not supported when streaming a title.” If you played the catalog version through cloud streaming, you need a downloadable or otherwise supported game license before expecting its add-ons to work.
What you should check before buying the game again
- Confirm that the replacement license is for the same game, platform generation and account region as the DLC.
- Check the game’s product page for the edition that matches your add-on. A DLC purchase for one title does not automatically transfer to a different release with a similar name.
- After installing the game, open its add-on or manage-content area and verify that the DLC is installed on the console where you intend to play.
Do not treat the disappearance of the catalog listing as a refund event. The practical distinction is license access: the DLC purchase remains on the account, while its use is gated by access to the underlying game.
Are my saved games deleted when a catalog title leaves?
No. A title leaving the catalog does not itself delete a save stored on your PS4 or PS5. If you later purchase an available version of the game, PlayStation says you can use retained progress again, provided the save was not deleted.
Downloaded games
For a downloaded catalog game, the primary save is stored on the console. PlayStation Plus cloud storage is an additional copy or synchronization service, not proof that every save has already been uploaded. Upload and sync settings, available storage and the console’s last successful sync determine what is recoverable online.
Streamed games
Premium streaming uses separate Game Streaming Storage described by PlayStation. Do not assume that a streamed session created a normal local PS5 or PS4 save. If you later buy a downloadable version, confirm that the relevant retained save is available and compatible before deleting any local data.

How to check and upload a save on PS5
- Open Settings.
- Select Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Choose Saved Data (PS5) or Saved Data (PS4), depending on the game.
- Open the cloud-storage or sync controls and inspect the game’s latest upload time and status.
- If the newest progress is only on the console, upload it manually before the catalog departure.
PS5 games can automatically synchronize when configured. PS4 saves may auto-upload, but moving a PS4 save to PS5 storage requires a manual download step. A completed sync is more useful than merely seeing the game listed in cloud storage.
How much cloud storage is available?
PlayStation’s current support information lists 100 GB for PS5 saved data and 100 GB for PS4 saved data, plus a limit of 1,000 PS4 saved-data files. Sony Interactive Entertainment verified these service limits in 2026; the support page does not establish a fixed retention period for saves after a membership expires.
Those capacity figures are storage limits, not a promise that an expired member’s cloud files remain indefinitely. PlayStation’s current pages do not give a guaranteed number of days for post-expiration retention, so upload important saves locally as well.

Trophies you already earned remain on your PlayStation Network profile when a Plus game leaves. They are account records rather than a temporary catalog entitlement. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s trophy support guide says, “Trophies you earn are visible on your profile.”
Losing access to the game stops you from earning additional trophies until you regain a playable license, but it does not roll back the trophies already awarded. PlayStation also states that trophies earned during a Plus game trial remain on the profile even when the player does not purchase the title.
Sync trophies before moving or resetting a console
- On PS5, open your profile picture, select Trophies, press the options button and choose Sync Trophies.
- On PS4, open Trophies, press OPTIONS and select Sync With PlayStation Network.
A PS5 USB system backup does not include trophies. Sync them with PlayStation Network before a console transfer, factory reset or repair so the profile record is current online.

- Identify the entitlement. Check whether the game is a monthly title already added to your library, a Game Catalog title, a Classic, or a streamed game.
- Launch the game once. This confirms which console generation and save type it uses and may expose progress that has not yet synchronized.
- Check local storage. In Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings, inspect the PS5 or PS4 save entry and its latest timestamp.
- Upload missing progress. Manually upload the newest local save to Plus cloud storage if it is not already there.
- Sync trophies. Use the PS5 or PS4 trophy path above, especially if you are planning a console reset or transfer.
- Decide how you will continue. Check whether the exact title is available for separate digital purchase or another supported license before the listing disappears.
- Keep the local installation temporarily. Deleting the game does not remove a save by itself, but retaining the installation gives you another local reference while you sort out licenses and backups.
How can I keep playing after the game leaves?
The documented direct route is to purchase an available version of the title. Once the game license is restored, retained saves can be used again and purchased DLC can function with the base game.
Digital purchase
A PlayStation Store purchase is the clearest way to regain a digital license. Verify the platform and edition before buying, particularly when a game has separate PS4 and PS5 releases or multiple regional versions.
Physical copy
A disc can be another route when the title has a compatible physical release and your console has a disc drive. The disc must match the console’s platform requirements; a digital-only console cannot use it. Your existing save and DLC still need to match the game version and account region.
Renewing Plus
Renewing an eligible membership restores access to games that are still included in the applicable library. It is not a guarantee that a title which has already departed the catalog will return, so do not renew solely on the assumption that the removed game will reappear.
What changes when PlayStation Plus itself expires?
Membership expiration and a catalog departure are separate events. A catalog title can leave while your membership remains active, ending that game’s catalog entitlement. Conversely, an expired membership can remove access to Plus benefits even when a game is still listed in a catalog.
Cloud storage is a Plus benefit across the current US tiers, so expiration affects your ability to use that service. PlayStation’s current support pages do not promise a specific retention period for cloud saves after expiration. Before canceling or allowing a membership to lapse, download or otherwise preserve saves that you cannot afford to lose.
A monthly game already added to your library remains playable while you have an active eligible membership. It does not become a permanent purchase merely because it was claimed during a previous month.

What are the PS4 and PS5 backup options?
PS4 and PS5 handle removable backups differently.
PS4 individual save copies
PlayStation documents copying PS4 saved data individually to a compatible USB storage device. This is useful when you want a separate offline copy of a particular game’s progress before its catalog license ends.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPS5 full-console USB backup
PS5 does not provide the same individual-save-to-USB route. PlayStation documents a full-console USB backup that includes saved data. Restoring that backup erases the data currently on the PS5, so treat it as a recovery measure rather than a quick way to move one save.
Use a USB drive that the console recognizes and leave enough capacity for the full backup. Keep the backup labeled with the console and date, and do not begin a restore unless you understand that current console data will be replaced.

- The DLC is visible but will not start: verify that the base game has a separate active license. An add-on entitlement alone cannot launch the title.
- The save is missing after buying the game: check whether the original was a PS4, PS5 or streamed save, then inspect both local storage and cloud storage before creating a new save in the replacement installation.
- Trophies appear incomplete: manually synchronize with PlayStation Network. A console backup does not carry trophy records.
- The game still appears installed but will not launch: installation files are not the same as a play entitlement. Restore a qualifying license or remove the installation to reclaim space.
- You cannot find the title in the catalog: check the game’s product page and your library history. A monthly game you claimed and a catalog game you merely downloaded follow different access rules.
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep a catalog game playable offline after it leaves?
Offline installation does not create ownership. The console still checks whether the account has a valid entitlement, so a downloaded catalog copy can stop launching after the catalog license ends.
Does buying DLC prove that I own the base game?
No. DLC and the base title are separate entitlements. The add-on can remain listed in your account while refusing to run until an eligible license for the underlying game is present.
Will renewing Plus bring back a game that already departed?
Not necessarily. Renewal restores Plus benefits and access to titles that are currently included in the applicable libraries; it does not guarantee the return of a removed catalog game.
Can I recover a cloud save after my membership expires?
PlayStation’s current support pages do not state a guaranteed retention period after expiration. Because the duration is unspecified, preserve important progress on the console or an approved backup before the membership ends.
