You can set up a PlayStation passkey for free through Account Management: sign in, open Security, enable Sign in with Passkey, choose Create a Passkey, and complete your phone or computer’s verification prompt. A PS5 also offers a QR-code route under Settings > Users & Accounts > Account > Security > Sign in with Passkey. PlayStation sends a confirmation email after successful creation.

A passkey uses a fingerprint, face scan, or device screen-lock PIN instead of asking you to type your PlayStation password. You do not need to buy a separate hardware security key, although PlayStation warns that some such keys can have compatibility problems.

How do I set up a PlayStation passkey online?

The Account Management website is the main setup route and works even when you are not in front of a console. The online route is free and is a good choice if you are already using a browser or want to start from a phone or computer. Have access to the device that will protect the passkey, such as a compatible phone, tablet, or computer.

  1. Open PlayStation Account Management and sign in with your existing account credentials.
  2. Open Security.
  3. Turn on Sign in with Passkey.
  4. Select Create a Passkey.
  5. Choose the creation method PlayStation offers, then follow the prompts from your device.

Your device may ask for its normal fingerprint, face verification, or screen-lock PIN. The exact prompt depends on the device and the way it stores passkeys, so follow the prompt actually displayed rather than looking for one particular biometric option.

PlayStation says a successful setup triggers a confirmation email. Keep that message as a useful indication that the account setting changed, and protect the email account associated with PlayStation because it is part of your account-recovery chain. If the confirmation does not arrive, check the account email address and your mail folders; do not respond to an unsolicited message or scan a QR code from someone claiming to help.

Account Management is also the place to manage additional passkeys later. Creating one online does not limit its use to the browser or device where setup began: PlayStation describes passkey sign-in across supported consoles, services, and apps. The credential must still be available through the device or credential manager you use to sign in.

How do I create a passkey from a PS5?

On a PS5, you can start the same account-wide setup from the console and finish it on a mobile device. This route is convenient if you are already at the console and can scan its QR code with a phone.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose Users & Accounts.
  3. Select Account, then Security.
  4. Choose Sign in with Passkey.
  5. Scan the QR code shown on the PS5 with your phone.
  6. Select Create a Passkey on the phone and complete the device verification prompts.

On Android, PlayStation recommends using the default camera app to activate a QR code. If the camera does not recognize it, some phones may need a QR-scanner app. Only scan the code displayed in the PlayStation setup flow on your own console. A QR code is not automatically trustworthy just because someone describes it as account help, a reward, or a quick fix.

This is an account security change, not a passkey limited to the PS5 that displayed the QR code. PlayStation’s security-settings guidance says account security changes apply across your devices and consoles. That means the setting is associated with your PlayStation account; it does not mean the passkey is automatically copied to every device or operating system.

What is a PlayStation passkey?

A passkey is a device-mediated sign-in credential. Instead of typing a password into PlayStation, your phone, tablet, or computer proves control of the passkey after you unlock that device. The verification can use a fingerprint, face scan, or the device’s screen-lock PIN, depending on what that device supports.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For readers, the practical difference is how you authenticate: you choose a saved passkey at a supported sign-in screen and verify on the device that holds or shares it, rather than entering the PlayStation password each time. Passkey sign-in is therefore not the same as using a password manager merely to fill in a password, though a password manager may be where a passkey is stored and synchronized.

The result is passwordless sign-in for supported PlayStation destinations. A passkey is not the same thing as a separately purchased USB security key, and PlayStation does not require you to own one. PlayStation Support states, “Some hardware security keys may encounter issues; consider using synced passkeys on mobile devices.” The US support page was verified October 29, 2026; it does not identify a particular security-key model as compatible. A phone you already own is the ordinary starting point, so there is no required product purchase or setup fee.

Which PlayStation devices and apps support passkey sign-in?

PlayStation lists passkey sign-in for these destinations. The list concerns where you can sign in; it should not be read as a claim that every device offers the same setup screen.

Destination Passkey support Important qualification
PS5 Yes Choose the saved passkey at the sign-in screen and complete device verification.
PS4 Yes PlayStation documents sign-in support, but its support page does not provide a separate PS4 creation sequence.
PlayStation website Yes Use the saved passkey when the website presents the sign-in option.
PlayStation App Yes The app can use a passkey saved to a compatible device.
Remote Play for Mac Yes, with a troubleshooting caveat PlayStation lists it as a supported destination but also identifies it as a possible passkey troubleshooting case.
PS3 and PS Vita No passkey sign-in These systems require a device password instead.

In particular, do not infer a PS4 setup path from the PS5 instructions. PlayStation documents passkey sign-in on PS4, but the support instructions do not give an equivalent PS4-specific sequence for creating one. Use Account Management for creation if you are not following the documented PS5 QR-code route.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PS3 and PS Vita are an important exception for households with older hardware. Passkeys do not replace the device-password requirement on those systems. If you use one of them, plan for that separate requirement even if your newer devices use passkeys.

What do I need before creating one?

PlayStation says passkeys work on most mobile devices running iOS 16 or later or Android 9 or later. These are operating-system compatibility thresholds, not adoption statistics and not a guarantee that every device on those versions supports every passkey function.

  • On Android, use a Google account compatible with Google Play services.
  • For browser-based setup or sign-in, use a current version of Safari, Chrome, or Edge.
  • Have the phone, tablet, or computer you intend to use available during setup.
  • Make sure you can unlock that device using its configured verification method.
  • For the PS5 route, use a phone that can scan the console’s QR code.

PlayStation’s Android guidance recommends trying the default camera app for QR activation; some phones may require a QR-scanner app. A separate scanner is not a universal requirement. If the camera does not respond, use the alternative route PlayStation offers rather than scanning a code from an unrelated message.

You do not need a separate hardware security key, and you do not need to buy a new phone if a compatible device you already own can complete the prompts. A hardware key is an optional category of credential, not a PlayStation passkey prerequisite. PlayStation warns that some hardware security keys may have issues and points readers toward synced mobile passkeys instead. No particular model is confirmed by that general warning.

How do I sign in after setup?

At a PS5, PS4, website, PlayStation App, or supported Remote Play sign-in screen, choose the saved passkey when PlayStation offers it. Follow the verification prompt on the device that stores or shares the passkey, then allow the sign-in to continue.

The exact prompt depends on the operating system and passkey storage method. Avoid assuming that every passkey automatically appears on every operating system: synchronization depends on the device ecosystem or password manager holding the credential. If the passkey is available on another device through the same credential store, that device may be able to complete verification; if not, use PlayStation’s alternative sign-in route.

Passkey sign-in is a choice for supported destinations, not a universal change to every older PlayStation device. PS3 and PS Vita continue to require a device password. Also, the passkey’s availability on one device does not guarantee that you can sign in from a second device with an unrelated account or storage system.

How do I add another passkey?

Additional passkeys can provide another way into the account, such as a passkey on another personal device. This can be useful before replacing a phone or if you use more than one device regularly. Make sure the second device is one you control and can unlock.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Sign in to Account Management.
  2. Open Security.
  3. Choose Manage Passkeys.
  4. Select Create a Passkey.
  5. Choose Create on This Device or Create on Another Device.
  6. Complete the prompts on the selected device.

PlayStation permits multiple passkeys. Devices that share the same passkey or password-manager store may be able to use that credential, but PlayStation does not promise universal synchronization across all operating systems. The two creation choices let you start from the device you are currently using or have another device participate; choose the option that matches the device holding the passkey, then complete the prompts shown.

Adding another passkey is not the same as buying a security key. It is a way to register another supported passkey for the account. Keep track of which device or credential manager holds each entry so you know what remains available if you replace a phone.

How do I remove a passkey?

Use Account Management > Security > Manage Passkeys. Find the passkey you no longer want and select Remove next to it. This is the route to use when a device has been replaced or you no longer want its passkey associated with the account.

Before removing an entry, confirm that another working sign-in method is available. For example, test a replacement passkey before deleting the old phone’s entry, or be prepared to use PlayStation’s fallback sign-in option. Removing a passkey from the account is different from merely signing out of an app, and it should not be done as a first troubleshooting guess if you are locked out.

What should I do if passkey sign-in fails?

Do not repeatedly guess at device settings or disable unrelated account protections. PlayStation provides a built-in fallback that can restore access without immediately changing account protections.

  1. At the sign-in prompt, select Can’t Sign In with Passkey.
  2. Use the email or QR-code alternative PlayStation presents.
  3. If the problem is limited to an outdated browser, update the browser or use PlayStation’s password-based fallback.
  4. If you are pairing Android with Windows, try the alternative sign-in route; PlayStation identifies some Android-Windows combinations as potentially troublesome.
  5. For Remote Play for Mac problems, revert to password sign-in as PlayStation recommends.

PlayStation recommends current Safari, Chrome, or Edge for browser sign-in. If an older browser is blocking the flow, an update or the offered password fallback is a more direct response than removing passkeys or changing other security settings.

For Android–Windows sign-in, the caveat applies to some pairings, not every Android phone and Windows computer. If the prompt fails in that combination, use the email or QR-code fallback that PlayStation offers. For Remote Play for Mac, PlayStation identifies a potential issue and recommends going back to password sign-in. Passkey support being listed for a destination does not mean every setup combination will be trouble-free.

Do not scan a QR code sent by a stranger who claims it will unlock rewards or fix your account. PlayStation explicitly warns against codes from strangers, even when a message is framed as account assistance or a reward. Scan only a code displayed in a trusted PlayStation sign-in or setup flow that you initiated.

What if I lose the phone that holds my passkey?

If another device has the same passkey or verification method, use that device to sign in and register a replacement passkey through Security > Manage Passkeys. This is the quickest recovery path when the credential is available elsewhere. It depends on the other device actually having access to the passkey; owning another phone by itself does not guarantee that the credential is there.

If no other device can complete verification, use PlayStation’s Online Assistant for account help. Do not remove working security settings or disclose recovery information to an unsolicited helper. Continue to protect the email account associated with PlayStation, since the official email fallback and account confirmation process make that account an important part of access recovery.

To reduce the chance that a lost or replaced phone leaves you without access, add another passkey on a device you control when practical. Test that it can be used before relying on it as the backup. This is a recovery preparation step, not a promise that passkeys sync across every platform.

Can I switch back to a password?

Yes. In Account Management, open Security, disable Sign in with Passkey, and create a password when prompted. This restores password-based authentication for the account. If you simply prefer a password or a supported sign-in combination is not working, this is PlayStation’s documented way back.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Switching back is also the recommended fallback for certain outdated-browser and Remote Play for Mac problems. Keep the password protected and make sure the associated email account remains secure. A password fallback does not eliminate the separate device-password requirement for PS3 and PS Vita.

What limitations should I know before enabling a passkey?

PS3 and PS Vita still use a device password

Passkey support does not extend to PS3 or PS Vita sign-in. Those systems require a device password, so owners of older hardware should retain a way to create or access that password even after enabling passkeys elsewhere. Passkey setup does not turn those older systems into passkey-compatible destinations.

Checkout password protection is incompatible

PlayStation states that Require Password at Checkout is not compatible with an account that has passkeys set up. This is a separate console-store purchase safeguard, not part of the passkey sign-in process. If you rely on that checkout setting, review the trade-off before enabling passkeys. In particular, do not treat the passkey as a replacement checkout confirmation: PlayStation identifies the settings as incompatible.

Hardware security keys are optional and may be problematic

A physical security key is not required for setup. PlayStation warns that some hardware keys may encounter issues and recommends synced mobile passkeys as an alternative. Do not assume a particular key model is supported without confirmation from PlayStation. Most readers can start with a compatible phone they already own rather than purchasing additional hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

QR-code safety matters

A QR code can authorize a sensitive account action when scanned in the correct context. PlayStation warns against codes supplied by strangers, including messages framed as account assistance or rewards. Start setup from Account Management or your own PS5 rather than from an unsolicited message. If a person sends a code and urges you to scan it to protect or recover your account, use the official PlayStation route instead.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Which setup route should I choose?

Route Best when What you need
Account Management You are already using a browser or are away from your console. PlayStation account access and a compatible device for verification.
PS5 QR-code setup You are at the console and want to start from its security menu. A PS5, a phone that can scan its QR code, and a compatible passkey device.

Both routes change the same PlayStation account setting. Choose the route that puts you closest to a trusted device you can unlock. Account Management is the more flexible starting point if you do not have a PS5 nearby; the QR-code route is a documented console-based option if you are already at your PS5.

Neither route requires buying a hardware security key. The PS5 route relies on scanning the QR code with a phone, while the online route starts in a browser. If the QR scan does not work, the online route remains an alternative rather than a reason to scan a code supplied by someone else.

How should I prepare for recovery?

Before relying exclusively on a passkey, register an additional passkey on another device when practical. Keep your PlayStation email account protected, because PlayStation’s fallback and confirmation flows depend on account email access. If you later replace a phone, remove its old entry only after the replacement passkey works.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is also useful to understand your fallback choices in advance: PlayStation’s sign-in screen offers Can’t Sign In with Passkey with an email or QR-code alternative; another device may work if it has access to the same credential; and PlayStation’s Online Assistant is the next step if you have no usable device. These are distinct paths, so choose based on what you can still access rather than repeatedly attempting a device that cannot verify.

Finally, decide whether the checkout limitation affects you. If you rely on Require Password at Checkout, its incompatibility with an account set up with passkeys may outweigh the convenience for your use. The choice is between account sign-in methods and a separate store safeguard; review both before enabling passkeys.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are passkeys?

A passkey is a device-mediated sign-in credential. You verify with the device’s supported fingerprint, face scan, or screen-lock PIN instead of entering your PlayStation password. The specific prompt depends on the device and where the passkey is stored.

Where can I sign in with a passkey?

PlayStation lists PS5, PS4, the PlayStation website, PlayStation App, and Remote Play for Mac. PS3 and PS Vita do not support passkey sign-in and require a device password. Remote Play for Mac is listed as supported but may have troubleshooting issues.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need to buy a hardware security key?

No. A separate hardware security key is not required; a compatible phone or other device can hold a passkey. PlayStation warns that some hardware security keys may encounter issues and suggests synced mobile passkeys. It does not confirm a specific key model in that general guidance.

Can I set up a passkey on PS4?

PlayStation documents passkey sign-in on PS4, but its support instructions do not provide a separate PS4-specific creation sequence. You can create one through Account Management or use the documented PS5 QR-code setup route.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

Do passkeys sync automatically between every phone and computer?

No. PlayStation allows passkeys to be reused on devices that share the same passkey or password-manager store, but synchronization depends on the operating system or credential manager. A passkey saved in one ecosystem should not be assumed to appear on an unrelated platform.

Which Android tool should I use to scan the PS5 QR code?

PlayStation recommends the phone’s default camera app for QR activation. Some Android phones may need a separate QR-scanner app if the built-in camera does not recognize the code.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Which browsers does PlayStation recommend for passkey setup?

PlayStation recommends a current version of Safari, Chrome, or Edge for browser sign-in and setup. An outdated browser can cause passkey failures; update it or use PlayStation’s password fallback rather than changing unrelated security settings.

What happens if I lose my phone? Can I still sign in on another device?

If another device has access to the same passkey or verification method, use it to sign in and register a replacement passkey. If no other device works, contact PlayStation’s Online Assistant. A second device is useful only if it can actually access the credential.

Can I have multiple passkeys on my account?

Yes. Go to Account Management > Security > Manage Passkeys > Create a Passkey, then choose Create on This Device or Create on Another Device. PlayStation permits additional passkeys, though it does not promise that every passkey syncs across every operating system.

How do I remove a passkey?

In Account Management, open Security > Manage Passkeys and select Remove next to the passkey. If you are replacing a phone, confirm that another sign-in method works before removing the old entry.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I switch back to password-based authentication after using a passkey?

Yes. In Account Management, open Security, disable Sign in with Passkey, and create a password. PS3 and PS Vita still require a device password regardless of passkey use on newer destinations.

Does setting up a passkey affect Require Password at Checkout?

Yes. PlayStation says Require Password at Checkout is not compatible with an account that has passkeys set up. It is a separate console-store safeguard, so consider that trade-off before enabling passkeys if you rely on it.

What should I do if I see a QR code in a message?

Do not scan QR codes from strangers, including messages that promise account help or rewards. Start the setup from Account Management or the security menu on your own PS5, and scan only a code from a trusted PlayStation flow you initiated.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Use Account Management for the free online setup or start from your PS5’s Security menu and scan its QR code. A compatible phone is enough; no separate security key is required. Before switching, check the PS3/PS Vita device-password requirement and the incompatibility with Require Password at Checkout, then add a backup passkey if you can.
