PlayStation Bug Bounties: What PS5 Researchers Need to Know

To report a suspected PS5 security vulnerability, first check whether the affected PlayStation product is covered by the live PlayStation program on HackerOne. If the affected asset is another Sony product or service outside that program, Sony directs reporters to Secure@Sony. A useful report is private, reproducible, limited to what is needed to show the issue, and clear about its realistic impact. Neither submitting a report nor having it validated guarantees a bounty.

The decisive question is not simply whether a finding involves a PlayStation 5 console. It is whether the exact asset, behavior and testing activity fit the current policy. Sony’s product-security disclosure page, last updated in November 2025, points researchers to the live PlayStation policy and scope rather than publishing a permanent list of eligible PS5 techniques or reward tiers.

How do PlayStation bug bounties work?

PlayStation’s bug bounty program gives security researchers a route to report vulnerabilities affecting assets listed in its live HackerOne policy. The key qualification is scope: a PS5-related observation is not automatically eligible simply because it involves a PlayStation console, accessory, service, or game. The live policy determines which assets and conditions the program covers.

Sony’s product-security disclosure page directs PlayStation security reports to the PlayStation program on HackerOne. Sony directs reports about other Sony assets to Secure@Sony. Check the program’s current policy and scope before investigating or submitting. The live HackerOne policy text was not available for verification in the browser used for the information summarized here, so current exclusions, eligible firmware, safe-harbor language, controller eligibility, and PS5 reward tiers cannot be stated reliably.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The process is not a promise of payment. HackerOne explains that monetary awards are discretionary and determined by the program’s security team. The platform also notes that a program’s own policy and disclosure settings govern what happens after a report is submitted. Treat scope, reward eligibility, and disclosure permission as separate questions: a report can be received without being bounty-eligible, and a report being handled does not by itself authorize public disclosure.

In practical terms, the program is a coordinated channel, not a license to probe every PlayStation-connected system. A researcher should identify the asset, read the current rules, perform only the narrow checks needed to establish the issue, and then provide enough detail for Sony or an affected partner to reproduce it. If any of those steps is uncertain, asking the program is safer than assuming that a public form, a past bounty announcement, or a security-update listing grants permission.

Which reporting route should I use?

What the finding concerns Route to check What determines the next step
A PlayStation product or service PlayStation on HackerOne Whether the affected asset and finding fit the live program policy and scope.
Another Sony product or service Secure@Sony Sony’s reporting process for the affected asset.
Misconduct by another player PlayStation’s moderation and player-report tools Whether the issue is conduct rather than a security weakness.
A vulnerability in a third-party game playable on PlayStation Start with Sony’s product-security disclosure guidance Sony says it passes such reports to the affected third party for resolution.

Sony’s product-security disclosure page distinguishes PlayStation security reports from other Sony reports and explains the third-party-game route. Its US PlayStation Network terms separately direct player misconduct to moderation tools; a conduct complaint is not the same as a vulnerability report.

The asset owner matters more than the device on which you noticed the behavior. For example, a flaw in a PlayStation service should be evaluated against PlayStation’s HackerOne scope, while a flaw in a separate Sony service belongs in the route Sony specifies for that service. A third-party game may run on a PS5 yet still be operated by another company, which is why Sony says it forwards those reports rather than promising that PlayStation will resolve or reward them.

How do I report a PS5 vulnerability responsibly?

Prepare a concise, private record of the issue, check the live program scope, and submit through the PlayStation HackerOne page only when the relevant asset and finding fit its policy. If authorization is unclear, stop before invasive or disruptive investigation and ask through the program’s authorized channel.

  1. Describe what you observed. Decide whether the behavior could expose or compromise security, rather than being a gameplay glitch, ordinary product fault, or player-conduct issue. Record the affected asset as precisely as you can. A useful description names the service, feature, interface or component involved instead of relying on “the PS5” as the entire description.
  2. Check scope and authorization. Read the live PlayStation HackerOne policy and policy-scopes page before testing. Do not assume that a PS5 security-update listing, a previous program announcement, or the existence of a report form makes a product or testing method eligible. If the policy does not clearly cover the asset or activity, pause and ask the program rather than expanding the investigation.
  3. Write a reproducible account. Note relevant prerequisites and setup, then list the minimum steps needed to reproduce the behavior. Explain what you expected to happen, what happened instead, and why the difference creates a security impact. When relevant, include the console model and system-software version. State whether the result requires a particular account state, network position or user action, but do not gather more data than is needed to demonstrate the condition.
  4. Collect only necessary evidence. Add minimal supporting screenshots, logs, or a proof of concept if they help explain the finding. Keep sensitive demonstrations within the report instead of placing a working exploit or video in a public location. Do not include other people’s personal information. Redact unrelated account identifiers, messages, tokens and media before attaching files.
  5. Submit through the correct channel. On the PlayStation HackerOne program page, select Submit Report, identify the affected asset and weakness, and provide severity if the form or policy requires it. From September 21, 2026, HackerOne’s submission guide says severity selection is required where a program requires severity, unless the program opts out. That is a platform-form rule, not a PlayStation-specific severity or payout schedule.
  6. Keep follow-up in the authorized process. Use the report’s comments to answer questions and share additional evidence. Follow the program’s disclosure settings and policy before making details public; do not treat general platform guidance as permission to test an unlisted asset or publish a working exploit.

Owning a PlayStation 5 console can make it possible to observe a console-specific behavior, but ownership is not itself a bounty requirement or proof that a test is authorized. The physical product is the subject of a possible report, not a shortcut to eligibility. A DualSense controller should be discussed only when the finding genuinely concerns that device, and its appearance in security-update information does not establish bounty coverage.

What makes a report actionable?

A triager needs enough detail to understand the affected component, reproduce the behavior, and assess plausible consequences. A useful report separates observed facts from interpretation: show what happened, explain the security consequence you believe follows, and avoid claiming broader impact than your evidence supports.

  • Asset: identify the PlayStation service, product, or component involved, not merely “the PS5.”
  • Environment: note model and system-software version when relevant, plus prerequisites that materially affect reproduction.
  • Steps: provide an ordered, minimal sequence that another authorized reviewer can follow.
  • Expected and actual behavior: state the normal result and the observed result plainly.
  • Impact: explain who or what could be affected and under what conditions; distinguish a demonstrated impact from a possible one.
  • Evidence: attach focused screenshots, logs, or a proof of concept, while removing unrelated personal information.

A clear title can combine the affected asset and the security consequence without overstating it. The opening summary should tell the triager what happens, who must perform the action, and what access or data could be gained. Numbered reproduction steps should begin with prerequisites, identify the exact action that triggers the behavior, and end with the observable result. A separate impact paragraph can then explain why the result matters.

If the issue depends on a particular console model or system-software version, put that information near the top rather than burying it in an attachment. If a screenshot or log is sufficient, do not attach a larger collection of unrelated captures. If a proof of concept is necessary, keep it narrowly functional and private. These practices help reviewers validate the finding without exposing other users or creating unnecessary operational risk.

HackerOne’s report-submission guidance describes the report form and the information researchers may provide. The details above are a reporting checklist, not a claim that any PS5 vulnerability or exploit was tested for this article.

Is a PS5 device listed for security updates automatically in bounty scope?

No. A security-update period and bounty scope answer different questions: an update listing indicates a security-support context, while the HackerOne policy determines whether a particular asset and report qualify for the program.

Sony’s disclosure page includes a table of security-update periods for PS5 and controllers, but that table does not certify the devices, particular software versions, or research methods as bounty-eligible. Use the current PlayStation HackerOne policy-scopes page for scope, and avoid inferring that a device’s update status authorizes a specific test. If the policy’s coverage is ambiguous, ask the program before proceeding.

This distinction matters especially for accessory-specific findings. Sony’s disclosure guidance and support information can help identify the product concerned, but neither should be treated as a substitute for the live bounty policy. The current controller eligibility and any firmware-specific requirements are not established here.

Do not infer scope from a console’s age, a software-update date, or a feature being marketed as a security control. Those facts may help you describe the environment, but only the current program policy can answer whether the asset and activity are accepted. Record the version you observed so the program can compare it with its own support and triage information.

How much does Sony pay for a PS5 vulnerability?

There is no verified current PS5 payout figure available here. Do not use an older PS4 bounty announcement as a PS5 rate, minimum, maximum, or typical award; Sony and HackerOne describe awards as discretionary and dependent on the program’s assessment.

Figure or policy point What it applies to What it does not establish
$50,000 starting bounty for critical vulnerabilities Sony Interactive Entertainment’s June 24, 2020 announcement for critical PS4 vulnerabilities. A current PS5 bounty, a guaranteed award, or the usual amount for a report.
Five business days for a response; 30 business days for a status update Sony’s Secure@Sony reporting-site text accessed in 2026. Sony’s product-security disclosure, last updated November 2025, also describes acknowledgment and status-update targets, with incident-specific qualifications. A repair deadline, a payment deadline, or a guarantee that every report receives a bounty.

The historical PS4 amount appears in Sony’s June 2020 PlayStation bug-bounty announcement. Sony’s current service-response wording is on Secure@Sony. Neither source supplies a verified current PS5 reward schedule. Check the live program policy for any applicable reward terms, and do not assume a particular impact rating maps to a fixed payment.

A report can therefore have practical value even when no payment is made: it may be acknowledged, investigated, or routed to the responsible party without creating an award obligation. Conversely, a serious-sounding title does not guarantee a high rating. Let the evidence, affected asset and realistic consequences support the assessment rather than negotiating from the historical PS4 figure.

How long does Sony take to respond?

Sony publishes communication targets, not a guaranteed resolution schedule. Secure@Sony says to expect a response within five business days and a status update within 30 business days; Sony’s product-security disclosure also describes acknowledgment and status-update timing, subject to incident-specific qualifications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A response or status update is not the same as a fix, a final decision on eligibility, or a bounty payment. The timing language should be read as a service communication target. Keep correspondence in the report or authorized Sony channel, and do not treat a quiet period as permission to disclose details publicly or to test more broadly.

If the first reply asks for clarification, answer in the existing report rather than opening parallel public discussions. Preserve the original steps and explain any correction transparently. A status update may indicate that triage is continuing; it does not tell you when engineering work will finish. The published timeframes also do not convert an out-of-scope submission into an in-scope one.

What if the vulnerability is in a third-party PlayStation game?

Sony says it passes reports about vulnerabilities in third-party games playable on PlayStation to the affected third party for resolution. That handoff does not establish that Sony will pay a bounty for the issue.

Describe the game and the affected behavior clearly, and check the live PlayStation program policy before assuming the game or its services are covered. The party responsible for resolving a game vulnerability may be different from the party that operates the console or platform feature involved. Keep the report focused on the security issue, and follow the disclosure process that applies to the receiving program or company.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A game running on PlayStation may involve several assets: the console client, PlayStation network services and the publisher’s servers. Identify which component produced the behavior and avoid presenting a publisher-side issue as a console flaw without evidence. Sony’s stated handoff route is a reason to keep the report factual and portable, so the receiving third party can reproduce it without access to private material from unrelated players.

How should I handle disclosure after submitting?

Keep the finding private while it is being reviewed and follow the PlayStation program’s own policy and disclosure settings. HackerOne says reports begin non-public, while later publication is governed by the program’s disclosure settings and policy.

Use the report’s comments for follow-up and provide requested clarification through the same authorized process. A general HackerOne disclosure guideline or a safe-harbor statement is not a substitute for PlayStation’s live policy, and neither should be read as permission to probe an asset that is not listed or to publish a working exploit. Sony’s 2020 announcement described the program’s purpose as working with researchers to make PlayStation safer; that purpose is not a guarantee of eligibility, legal protection, or payment.

Do not post a demonstration video, exploit code or affected users’ information while waiting for a reply. If you want a public write-up later, ask for or follow the disclosure path specified by the program. A report’s eventual publication, if allowed, is a separate decision from whether Sony fixes it or awards money.

What should I do before starting a PS5 security investigation?

Use a stop-and-check approach rather than treating discovery as authorization to continue. The safe sequence is to establish that the observation is plausibly security-related, verify the asset and activity in the current policy, then keep any authorized reproduction narrow and report it privately.

  • Separate a security weakness from a gameplay bug or a complaint about another player.
  • Identify the exact asset and check whether the live policy covers it.
  • Avoid disruptive or invasive steps while scope or authorization remains unclear.
  • Record only the minimum evidence needed to explain and reproduce the issue.
  • Submit through PlayStation HackerOne for covered PlayStation assets; consult Secure@Sony for other Sony assets.
  • Keep communications and any disclosure request within the authorized reporting process.

The live PlayStation policy is the controlling source for current scope and program rules. A historical announcement, a product-security update table, or general platform guidance cannot fill in policy details that the live program has not made clear.

Common mistakes that can weaken a report

Several avoidable errors make triage harder. Sending a conduct complaint to the security queue obscures the actual issue. Calling every crash a vulnerability without explaining confidentiality, integrity or access impact leaves reviewers without a security rationale. Omitting the model or system-software version can make a result impossible to reproduce. Conversely, attaching broad captures that include other users’ data creates a privacy problem without improving validation.

Another mistake is relying on an old headline number. The $50,000 figure belongs to Sony’s June 24, 2020 announcement for critical PS4 vulnerabilities. It is historical context, not evidence of a current PS5 minimum, maximum or average. Similarly, five-business-day and 30-business-day communication targets describe contact and status updates, not a promised fix or payment date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Finally, do not broaden testing because a report has not yet received a reply. Keep the original evidence, answer questions in the authorized channel and wait for scope clarification. If the affected asset is outside PlayStation’s listed program, use Sony’s Secure@Sony route or the responsible third party instead of forcing it into the wrong queue.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are HackerOne reports visible to the public when they are submitted?

HackerOne says reports start as non-public. Whether any report is published later depends on the specific program’s disclosure settings and policy, so a researcher should check those rules rather than assume a universal publication schedule.

Does a PS5 system-software update fix prove that my report was accepted?

No. An update’s appearance alone does not establish that a particular report was accepted, that the update addresses the reported issue, or that the report qualified for a bounty. Sony’s security-update information and the bounty program’s handling of an individual report are separate matters.

Can a report be valid but receive no bounty?

Yes. HackerOne describes monetary awards as discretionary and set by the security team, so validation does not itself create a guaranteed payment. The live PlayStation program policy is the source to consult for its applicable award terms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the difference between a Sony response and a fix deadline?

A response or status update is a communication milestone, not a commitment to remediate by that date. Sony’s published timeframes should not be interpreted as a repair or payout deadline.

Does owning a PlayStation 5 make a report bounty-eligible?

No. A PlayStation 5 console may be the physical subject of a finding, but ownership does not establish scope, authorization or payment. The live PlayStation HackerOne policy controls eligibility.

Should I report a player’s cheating through the bug-bounty program?

No. Player misconduct belongs in PlayStation’s moderation and player-report tools. Use the security channel for a reproducible weakness that could affect confidentiality, integrity, availability or account security.

What if my finding affects a third-party game?

Sony says it passes vulnerability reports about third-party games playable on PlayStation to the affected third party for resolution. That routing does not guarantee a PlayStation bounty; identify the responsible asset and follow the applicable program’s disclosure process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the $50,000 figure a current PS5 bounty?

No. It was a starting bounty announced on June 24, 2020 for critical PS4 vulnerabilities. It should not be presented as a current PS5 minimum, maximum or typical award.

What evidence should I attach?

Provide the minimum screenshots, logs or proof of concept needed to reproduce and understand the issue. Keep sensitive demonstrations private, redact unrelated personal information and include the relevant console model or system-software version when it affects the result.

The Bottom Line

Check the live PlayStation HackerOne scope before testing, report covered findings privately with reproducible steps and realistic impact, and use Secure@Sony or the responsible third party when the asset is outside PlayStation’s program. Historical PS4 rewards and response targets do not guarantee a current PS5 bounty, fix or payment.
