Pair your controller with Android first, then launch Open Nectar and use its settings menu to confirm or remap the game controls. Open Nectar is an unofficial native Android port of the original GameCube versions of Pikmin and Pikmin 2; it is not a Nintendo Android release. Its Android version supports Bluetooth and USB controllers, with touch controls available as a fallback.

The instructions below reflect Open Nectar 1.1, listed as the latest release on October 26, 2026. The project is updated frequently, so menus and compatibility may change in later releases.

What do you need to play Pikmin with a controller on Android?

You need a compatible Android device, the Open Nectar APK, a controller that Android can connect to, and your own compatible game disc images. Open Nectar does not include the game data: its launcher checks the image you select and extracts the required assets into the app’s private storage. You install each game from its own image, so installing Pikmin does not also install Pikmin 2, or vice versa.

  • Android: version 10 or newer.
  • Processor: a 64-bit ARM64 device.
  • Graphics: OpenGL ES 3.0 support.
  • Storage: about 1 GB of free internal storage.
  • Game files: a compatible image for each game you want to install.
  • Controller: Bluetooth or USB; the project supports SDL2-compatible controllers, including Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch Pro, and generic controllers with automatic mapping.

These are the project’s listed requirements, not a guarantee that every device meeting them will behave identically. In particular, the documentation does not provide a device-by-device compatibility list. If you are checking a phone or tablet, verify its Android version, ARM64 architecture, OpenGL ES 3.0 support, and available internal storage before installing.

  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Open Nectar documents ISO and GCM as Android inputs. RVZ, WIA, and GCZ images are not supported directly on Android; if you have a legitimate copy in one of those formats, convert it to ISO on a computer before selecting it on your phone. The project lists Pikmin USA Rev 1, Pikmin Europe, Pikmin 2 USA, and Pikmin 2 Europe as supported regional builds. European builds include English, French, German, Spanish, and Italian; US builds are listed as English.

The Android route described here is Open Nectar, not a Nintendo-published Android game. It is a native port of the original GameCube games, so the setup described does not use Dolphin. You do not select a GameCube image to launch in Dolphin as part of these steps; Open Nectar’s launcher handles its own supported image selection and local asset extraction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens when you select a game image?

Open Nectar’s launcher presents separate covers for Pikmin and Pikmin 2. When you choose Install under one of them, the launcher checks the selected image and extracts the assets it needs into the app’s private storage. The image itself is not copied or modified. Select the matching image for the game you are installing, and repeat the install process for the second game if you want both available in the launcher.

The app’s request for a game file is therefore part of setup, not a prompt to download game data from within the APK. Use your own compatible image; Open Nectar does not include or download Nintendo’s game data.

How do you pair a Bluetooth controller and start a game?

Pair the gamepad in Android before opening Open Nectar. Then install each game from its own disc image, launch it, and check the controller bindings in the in-game settings. Pairing and game installation are separate jobs: Android connects the physical controller, while Open Nectar verifies the game image and reads controller input once the game is running.

  1. Install Open Nectar 1.1. As of October 26, 2026, the project’s releases page lists version 1.1 as the latest release. Use the current APK rather than an older one when possible; recent release notes include Android controller changes along with fixes and other updates. Because the project changes frequently, the screens or compatibility details may differ in a later version.
  2. Install Pikmin and/or Pikmin 2. Open the launcher and tap Install beneath the game you want. Select that game’s compatible ISO or GCM image in the Android file picker. Repeat the process for the other game if you want both. The launcher verifies the selected image and extracts its required assets locally; the image itself is not copied or modified.
  3. Put the controller into pairing mode. Follow the controller maker’s pairing procedure. The Android pairing path documented by Google is Settings → Connected devices → Pair new device; select the controller when it appears in the available-device list. If the names or screens on your Android device differ, use its Bluetooth device-pairing screen to select the controller.
  4. Launch the installed game. Tap the Pikmin or Pikmin 2 cover in Open Nectar. If the physical controller is unavailable or inconvenient, the Android version also provides on-screen touch controls.
  5. Open the game settings. Use the in-app settings button on Android. Open Nectar says this brings up the same settings menu as F1 on desktop.
  6. Check the controls and select a mode. Go to the controls area, confirm which controller is detected, and inspect its bindings. Choose Classic for controller play. Mouse Pointer is intended for a mouse, not as the natural starting mode for a gamepad.
  7. Try the essential actions before a long session. Check throw, whistle, camera movement, and pause. If an action is on the wrong button, use the controls menu to remap it by action rather than relying on the letters printed on the controller.

Do the first control check while you can still reach the settings menu easily. Confirm that the game responds to the controller, that the main action buttons perform the actions shown in the menu, and that the camera and pause inputs work. This short check helps distinguish a pairing problem from a button-layout problem before you begin playing.

Which buttons control throw, whistle, camera, and pause?

Open Nectar’s documented action layout gives you a starting point, but it is an action map—not a promise that every controller has matching printed labels or maps automatically in the same way.

Action shown by Open Nectar Documented starting input
Throw / confirm A
Whistle / cancel B
Dismiss X
Group Y
Change camera Z
Rotate camera left L
Rotate camera right R
Pause / skip a cutscene Start

Those A/B/X/Y and shoulder-button labels may not correspond to the same physical positions across Xbox-style, PlayStation-style, Switch-style, and generic layouts. If throw and whistle feel reversed, or a button does something unexpected, remap the named actions in the controls menu. That is more reliable than trying to translate one controller’s printed letters into another’s. For example, focus on whether the action called Throw / confirm is assigned to the button you want to use for throwing, rather than assuming the button printed “A” must have a particular physical position.

Also verify the left stick, right stick or C-stick, D-pad, shoulder buttons, and Start. The project documents C-stick functionality for Pikmin formation and a D-pad, but the exact physical labels can vary by controller family. Check these inputs in the binding screen rather than assuming every device presents the same layout. This matters especially when a controller is detected but its secondary controls are not where you expect them.

Use the action names as your reference when you remap. The main actions to check are throw/confirm, whistle/cancel, dismiss, group, camera change, camera rotation, and pause/skip cutscene. Once those are mapped as you prefer, make sure movement and formation inputs also respond. The goal is not to reproduce one universal set of printed letters; it is to make the on-screen action labels match the buttons and sticks you intend to use.

Which Bluetooth controllers work with Open Nectar?

Open Nectar says it supports SDL2-compatible controllers, including Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch Pro, and generic controllers with automatic mapping. It also states that Bluetooth and USB controllers work on Android. Google’s Android guidance covers pairing a game controller through the operating system; successful pairing alone does not confirm that every button is mapped as you expect inside the game.

For a new purchase, look for a Bluetooth game controller that explicitly supports Android or standard Android/HID input. Reliable analog sticks matter for movement and formation control, while a usable D-pad and remappable inputs help when automatic mapping does not match the controls you prefer. A USB controller can be an alternative if Bluetooth pairing is unreliable, but Open Nectar does not require a wired controller.

Generic controllers can work, but automatic mapping is not guaranteed to be perfect. Prioritize a controller that lets you correct the mapping in the game, and verify the important actions in the controls menu before settling into play. A familiar console-brand controller is not a requirement; Android compatibility and workable input mapping are the more relevant checks for this setup.

What should you compare when choosing a controller?

  • Android/Bluetooth compatibility: Look for an explicit Android or standard HID compatibility claim. A controller that pairs with Android is a sensible starting point, but still check the in-game bindings.
  • Remapping: Make sure you can correct a mapping that puts throw, whistle, or another action on an inconvenient button. Open Nectar supports customizable configuration through its settings menu.
  • Sticks and D-pad: Consider stick reliability and D-pad feel for movement and Pikmin formation. The project documents both C-stick functionality and a D-pad, but controller families may label or place controls differently.
  • Comfort and mounting: If you expect longer sessions, consider how the controller feels in your hands and whether it can hold your phone securely. A separate stand is another way to position a phone or tablet.
  • Wired fallback: USB is supported as an alternative if Bluetooth pairing is troublesome. It is not a requirement, and the project does not specify a particular cable or adapter for every device.
  • Price and support: Compare current prices and retailer support for the models you are considering. No specific model, price, retailer, or purchase program is required for Open Nectar.

There is no need to buy a controller solely because it uses a particular console’s button lettering. The project describes several controller families and generic automatic mapping, and it provides remapping. Choose based on Android support, the physical controls you prefer, and whether you can correct the bindings if their defaults do not suit you.

Why is the controller paired but not working in the game?

Android pairing and in-game input detection are separate checks. If the controller appears in Android’s connected devices but Open Nectar does not respond as expected, work through these checks in order.

The game does not respond to any controller input

  1. Confirm the controller still appears under Android’s connected devices.
  2. Close and relaunch Open Nectar after pairing.
  3. Open the game settings and inspect which controller and bindings are shown.
  4. If several input devices are connected, press a button on the intended controller first. Open Nectar’s release notes say the controller pressed first becomes Player 1 on Android; some phones may list a virtual device before the physical controller.

If the controller is shown as connected by Android but the game remains unresponsive, start with the Player 1 check rather than immediately changing every binding. The project notes that input-device order can matter on Android. After you have made the intended controller the first one pressed, relaunch if needed and check the control screen again.

Some buttons work, but the actions are wrong

This points to a layout or automatic-mapping mismatch rather than a pairing failure. Remap throw/confirm, whistle/cancel, dismiss, group, camera, and pause using the action names in the controls menu. Then check the sticks, D-pad, and shoulder buttons as well; a controller can be detected even when its default mapping is inconvenient.

Do not assume that the letters printed on two different controller families represent the same physical position or behavior. Use the in-game action labels to make the correction. If the desired action is already assigned to a button you like, leave it; change only the bindings that are confusing or incorrect.

Touch controls cover part of the screen

Open Nectar includes touch controls and touch menus on Android, and the project says their layout can be moved and resized. If you are using a physical controller, adjust or hide the touch layer using the settings available in your release. The touch controls are a fallback, not a requirement when a gamepad is working.

The installer rejects the image

Check the file format first. Open Nectar does not support RVZ, WIA, or GCZ directly on Android; ISO and GCM are the documented Android inputs. Convert a compressed image to ISO on a computer using a legitimate copy of the relevant game, then choose that ISO from the Android file picker. Also make sure you selected the image for the game whose launcher cover you chose: the two games install separately.

The app requests a game file

That request is expected: the APK does not include or download Nintendo game data. Select your own compatible image for the particular game you are installing. Do not use unofficial mirrors to obtain copyrighted game files. The launcher verifies the image and extracts assets locally; it does not modify or copy the selected image.

Can a USB controller help?

Yes. Open Nectar states that USB controllers work on Android, so a wired controller is a supported alternative if Bluetooth pairing is unreliable or you prefer not to use Bluetooth. The project’s documentation does not specify one cable or adapter for every phone, so check the connection supported by your Android device and controller.

How do you update Open Nectar without losing saves?

Install a newer APK over the existing installation rather than uninstalling first. Open Nectar’s release notes warn that uninstalling can delete Android app data, and specifically advise against uninstalling before an update. Installing over the existing app is the project’s stated update path for retaining assets and saves. If the new APK is available, use the update-over-existing-install approach instead of removing the current app as a first troubleshooting step.

The release notes for version 1.1, listed October 26, 2026, mention Android controller changes, Pikmin 2 co-op fixes, sound restoration, and a launcher redesign. Those notes do not establish that every controller or device will behave identically, so recheck the controls menu if input changes after an update. The current version listed here is time-sensitive: the project may publish a newer release or change its setup instructions.

How to choose a controller for this setup

The controller does not need to be a particular console brand, but Android compatibility and the ability to correct button mappings are more useful than a low price alone. Consider these points before choosing one:

  • Android support: Prefer an explicit Android or standard HID compatibility claim.
  • Remapping: Choose a controller whose input mapping can be corrected if automatic detection places an action on the wrong button.
  • Stick and D-pad feel: Both matter for movement and formation control; check the physical controls suit your hands.
  • Long-session comfort: If you plan to mount a phone, check that the controller can hold the device securely or works comfortably with a separate stand.
  • Wired fallback: A USB option can help when Bluetooth pairing is unreliable, although it is an alternative rather than a requirement.

For a straightforward setup, pair a compatible controller with Android, install each game from its own supported image, and use Classic mode. Then confirm the action bindings in Open Nectar before beginning a longer play session. If the controller is detected but an action is wrong, remapping is the first fix; if no input registers, check Android pairing, relaunch the app, and make sure the intended controller is selected first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I play both Pikmin and Pikmin 2 on my Android phone with one controller?

Open Nectar’s Android version supports both games and Bluetooth and USB controllers. Install each game separately from its own compatible disc image, then use the same connected controller and check its bindings in the game settings.

Do I need Dolphin to play Pikmin on Android this way?

No. The setup described here uses Open Nectar, an unofficial native Android port of the original GameCube games. Dolphin is not part of these installation and controller-pairing steps.

Where do I remap the controller buttons?

Open the in-app settings button on Android and go to the controls area. The project says this opens the same settings menu as F1 on desktop. Remap using action names such as throw/confirm or whistle/cancel, rather than relying on printed button letters.

What should I try if Android is connected to my controller but Open Nectar does not respond?

Confirm the controller is still listed in Android’s connected devices, close and relaunch Open Nectar after pairing, then inspect the controller and bindings in the game settings. If multiple input devices are connected, press a button on the intended physical controller first; the project notes that the first controller pressed becomes Player 1 on Android.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Open Nectar include the Pikmin games in its APK?

No. The launcher expects a compatible image supplied by the user and extracts the needed assets locally; the APK does not supply Nintendo game data.

Which file formats can I select on Android?

Open Nectar documents ISO and GCM as Android inputs. RVZ, WIA, and GCZ are not supported directly on Android; convert a legitimate copy in one of those formats to ISO on a computer first.

Can I use a tablet instead of a phone?

The listed requirements cover Android version, ARM64 architecture, graphics support, and storage rather than a particular screen size. The documentation does not provide a device-by-device tablet compatibility list, so meeting those requirements alone cannot guarantee that a specific tablet will work.

Can I update Open Nectar without deleting saves?

The project says to install the new APK over the existing installation. Its release notes warn that uninstalling can delete Android app data, so do not uninstall first when updating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Open Nectar need an internet connection after setup?

The project’s documented Android instructions describe installing the APK and selecting local disc images, but do not specify whether an internet connection is needed for every app function. Check the current release’s own instructions if you need to use it offline.

Can I play with touch controls instead of a gamepad?

Yes. Open Nectar’s Android version includes on-screen touch controls. Their layout can be moved and resized, and they are available as a fallback if you do not want to use a physical controller.

The Bottom Line

To use a Bluetooth controller with Pikmin or Pikmin 2 on Android, pair it in Android settings, install the game from your own compatible ISO or GCM image, then choose Classic mode and verify the action bindings in Open Nectar. The project supports Bluetooth and USB controllers, but remapping may be needed for a particular controller layout. Install updates over the existing app rather than uninstalling first, and recheck the project’s current instructions because releases can change.
