To install custom maps in Celeste, use a moddable PC copy from Steam, itch.io, or Epic, then install Olympus and Everest and get maps through Olympus or GameBanana’s Olympus one-click installer. Keep each map as a .zip file in the Mods folder; Everest reads it without extracting it or replacing the original game files. Nintendo Switch and Microsoft/Xbox Store versions are not supported.
What do I need before installing Celeste mods?
You need a legitimate PC copy of Celeste, Olympus (the installer and mod manager), Everest (the mod loader), and enough access to read and write files in the game’s installation folder. Olympus without Everest is not enough: Everest is what loads custom maps.

Close the game first; an open Celeste process or a cloud-sync service holding files open can interrupt installation. If you use OneDrive or Google Drive Desktop, pause syncing if Olympus reports a file-in-use error.

How do I install Olympus and Everest?
Download Olympus from the official Everest site and follow the platform-specific instructions there. A Windows installer is also available from the GameBanana Olympus tool page; macOS and Linux users should use the Everest site’s instructions rather than relying only on that Windows executable.
Install Olympus on Windows
- Download Olympus from the official Everest site, or use the GameBanana tool page linked above.
- If Windows SmartScreen blocks the installer, verify that you obtained it from one of those official sources before choosing to run it. Olympus modifies
Celeste.exeto inject Everest, and the project notes that both Olympus and Everest are open source. - If antivirus software blocks the official download, treat that as a warning to verify the file’s origin—not as proof of either malware or safety. Re-download from the official host if the file looks spoofed; do not bypass a warning for an installer from an unfamiliar mirror.
- Open Olympus. If its Options screen shows a red exclamation mark, update Olympus before continuing.
Install Olympus on macOS
- Download the latest Olympus autobuild from the Everest site and open the downloaded archive. The download contains a zip inside another zip, so extract the inner archive as well.
- Move Olympus into Applications. Leaving it in Downloads can interfere with its self-update process.
- If macOS blocks the unverified app, use System Settings > Privacy & Security > Open Anyway after confirming the download came from the official Everest site.
Install Olympus on Linux or Steam Deck
- Use the Linux instructions on the Everest site. Download the autobuild, extract the nested zip, and run
install.shin a terminal. - Launch Olympus and follow the prompts. Its bundled LÖVE runtime may require FUSE 2. Do not blindly install a FUSE package with a system package manager; check the instructions for your distribution first.
- An unofficial Arch User Repository package and a Flathub listing for
io.github.everestapi.Olympusare also noted by the project, but the Everest site’s Linux instructions are the primary route. Steam Deck users should follow those Linux instructions.
Register Celeste and install Everest
- In Olympus, open Manage and add your Celeste installation. For Steam, use Manage > Browse local files to locate the game folder. On macOS Steam, open the game’s package with Show Package Contents > Contents > Resources.
- Return to Olympus and choose the Everest installation button. Select the stable branch, then choose Install/Update.
- Start Celeste through Everest in Olympus. Installing Olympus alone leaves the game without the mod loader, so custom map files will not load.
Stable is the recommended branch for playing mods when you do not need new features. Beta is intended for developing or testing features, while dev changes very frequently. Everest versions 4465 and above run on .NET Core; versions 4449 and below are legacy. If you have not played in a while, check your Everest version and update to a compatible current build. The official site linked stable manual-install artifact stable-1.6642.0 on October 29, 2026; that observed artifact is not a promise that the same build will remain latest.

These are project-reported advantages, not a guarantee that every setup or map will load faster.

Where do I get Celeste maps, and how do I install them?
Look for maps in Olympus’s Download Mods browser or in the Celeste section of GameBanana. Prefer map pages that show the Olympus one-click button: it appears after the community update checker accepts an upload, typically around 5–10 minutes after upload. If a new upload lacks the button, its zip may not have passed the structure checks.
- With Celeste closed, open a map page on GameBanana or find the map in Olympus’s Download Mods browser.
- Choose the Olympus/Everest one-click installer. Olympus downloads the zip and verifies it. If GameBanana is unavailable, Everest can hash-check installed zips against its mod update database and fall back to Banana Mirror.
- Leave the map as a
.zip. “That’s it. No need to extract anything.” Everest reads mod zips directly. - Launch Celeste through Everest in Olympus and select the map from the game’s chapter-select flow. If it does not load, check Mod Options for missing dependencies before trying other fixes.
If one-click installation is unavailable, the alternatives are to drag the zip onto Olympus or place it in the Mods folder beside Celeste. The Mods folder is also where Everest stores downloaded mods. Unpacked folders are for development or prototyping, not the safer player install route.
Why should I keep map files zipped?
Do not extract player mods. Everest loads .zip files directly, and leaving a mod in one archive means the operating system handles one file rather than potentially hundreds. The Everest common-crashes guide warns that unpacking can contribute to System.IO.IOException: Too Many Open Files. Some browsers or systems automatically extract downloads, so choose an option that keeps the original zip when prompted.

A zipped copy and an unpacked folder copy of the same mod should not sit in Mods together: both copies can supply the same assets and cause conflicts. If you accidentally extracted a downloaded mod, remove the folder copy and keep the zip. If the zip itself is corrupt, remove it and download it again through the one-click installer rather than repeatedly extracting or renaming it.
How can I keep modding safe and avoid conflicts?
- Use official sources. Get Olympus from everestapi.github.io or its GameBanana tool page, and get maps through GameBanana or Olympus. Avoid random “free Celeste mods” mirrors. No independent antivirus-lab certification or malware-incident count is established for Olympus or Celeste mods, so safety depends on source verification and cautious handling.
- Do not replace vanilla assets. Everest loads mods without replacing the original game files, but mods can supply assets at paths shared with the base game or another mod. Everest does not track which mod supplied a merged asset, so overwriting vanilla textures, maps, or dialogue is discouraged and can make conflicts difficult to trace.
- Update compatible pieces together. Keep Everest on a suitable current branch and update mods when using a newer Everest. Documented crashes can result from old helper mods running against a newer Everest; Olympus’s Update All can help bring installed mods up to date.
- Watch memory use. Large collaborations such as Strawberry Jam can increase RAM use and loading time. If Celeste runs out of memory, disable maps you are not playing in Mod Options, in Olympus under Manage Installed Mods, or by using
Mods/blacklist.txt. Do not install cleanup software as a substitute for disabling unused maps. - Keep only one copy of each mod. Duplicate mod files or duplicate audio banks can trigger conflicts, including
FMOD ERR_EVENT_ALREADY_LOADED.
You can switch between Everest and vanilla Celeste from the title screen or Olympus. If a mod is interfering with a vanilla session, use that switch rather than deleting or replacing original game files.
How do I install a missing helper dependency?
A map may require helper mods that are listed in its everest.yaml file. If the map fails to load because one is missing, open Mod Options and choose Install missing dependencies. Restart the game after installation if the mod still does not appear.

Optional dependencies in everest.yaml were added in Everest 2002. If you are making a map, declare the helpers it needs there. Avoid depending on another full map when possible: players would have to install that entire map and its own dependency tree just to use yours.
How do I make and test a map with Lönn?
Lönn is the community map editor. Install it through Olympus, which is the recommended route, or use its GitHub releases. Point it at Celeste.exe, or at Celeste.dll for a .NET Core install.
- Open Lönn and choose File > New. By default, Lönn opens the vanilla Summit map; do not edit that map.
- Create a map and add a Player Spawn Point to every room that should be playable. A room without one has no defined player starting position.
- Save the mod using a unique map path such as
Mods/YourMod/Maps/YourName/YourMod/YourMap.bin, alongside the mod’severest.yaml. - For a quick local check, you can put a bare
.bininMods; it appears as Uncategorized. For a normal test, launch Celeste through Everest using the DEBUG save and locate the map in chapter select. - Set display names in
Dialog/English.txt, then test again before sharing the mod.
When publishing, zip the mod as a .zip with everest.yaml visible at the archive root; do not use RAR or 7z, or put the contents inside an extra top-level folder. Do not keep the zipped copy alongside its unpacked development folder in Mods, because duplicate assets can conflict. Zip only for distribution; players should install the published zip without extracting it.

What should I try when a Celeste mod fails?
Match the error to the likely cause before reinstalling everything. Close Celeste before changing installed files, and avoid removing your saves while troubleshooting.
| Symptom or message | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
MonoModRules or XNA error |
Vanilla Celeste has not completed its first launch. | Launch vanilla Celeste once, close it, then start Everest again. |
| File in use or installer cannot change a file | Celeste is still open, or a cloud-sync tool is holding a game file. | Close Celeste; pause OneDrive or Google Drive Desktop syncing and retry. |
| Unsupported Celeste version | Celeste is older than 1.4.0.0, or the copy is unsupported. | Update a legitimate PC installation to 1.4.0.0 or later as required by Everest. |
Ionic.Zip.BadCrcException or “End of Central Directory” |
The downloaded zip may be corrupt or incomplete. | Delete that zip from Mods and redownload it through the one-click installer. |
| Unexpected MonoMod patcher | Olympus may be out of date. | Update Olympus, then retry the Everest install or update. |
OutOfMemory |
Too many or especially large maps may be loaded. | Disable unused maps through Mod Options, Olympus’s Manage Installed Mods, or Mods/blacklist.txt. |
| A map reports a missing helper | A dependency in the map’s everest.yaml is not installed. |
Use Mod Options > Install missing dependencies. |
FMOD ERR_EVENT_ALREADY_LOADED |
Two copies of a mod or audio bank may be loading. | Remove duplicate copies from Mods and launch again. |
Network/HttpRequestException |
A firewall may be blocking GameBanana access. | Check firewall rules for the relevant connection and retry the download. |

Where can I find work-in-progress Celeste maps?
The Everest FAQ points players to the Celeste Discord’s #modding_showcase and #modding_wip channels for finished and work-in-progress posts. A WIP post may not have passed GameBanana’s upload checks or offer Olympus one-click installation, so only install files from a source you trust.
Does the Olympus one-click check certify a map as malware-free?
No. The one-click availability follows acceptance by the community update checker, and Olympus verifies the downloaded zip against the mod update information; neither is an independent antivirus-lab certification. Confirm the source and avoid lookalike downloads even when a file claims to be a Celeste mod.
Can I use Olympus on a Steam Deck?
Yes. The supported route is the Linux Olympus installation documented by Everest, rather than a Windows installer. The bundled LÖVE runtime may require FUSE 2, so check the Linux instructions for your system instead of installing packages blindly.
