To generate a steady 528 Hz tone, create a browser AudioContext, make an OscillatorNode, set its waveform to "sine", assign 528 to its frequency, connect it to audioContext.destination, and start it from a user-controlled button. The browser synthesizes the sound itself; speakers or headphones are only the optional listening output. The example below includes Play and Stop controls and explains what to change when a browser blocks or suspends audio.
What does a browser-generated 528 Hz tone actually do?
A 528 Hz tone is a periodic sound wave that completes 528 cycles per second. In the Web Audio API, an OscillatorNode is the source that generates that periodic waveform. The number 528 is not a preset or a special browser mode: it is simply the frequency value assigned to the oscillator’s frequency AudioParam.

The default oscillator frequency is documented as 440 Hz, so leaving the setting untouched produces a different pitch. Set the value explicitly to 528 every time you create the oscillator. A sine waveform is the simplest choice for a single, plain tone; square, sawtooth, triangle, and custom periodic waves produce different timbres at the same frequency.
The Web Audio API specification describes OscillatorNode as an audio source that generates a periodic waveform. Connecting that node to audioContext.destination routes the result to the browser’s selected audio output, such as built-in speakers, external speakers, or headphones.

How do I generate the tone with the smallest working script?
This is the minimal JavaScript pattern. It creates the audio context when Play is pressed, creates a fresh oscillator, sets 528 Hz, sends it to the destination, and starts it. Stop ends the current oscillator; a later Play call creates a new one.
let audioContext;
let oscillator;
function playTone() {
audioContext ??= new AudioContext();
oscillator = audioContext.createOscillator();
oscillator.type = "sine";
oscillator.frequency.setValueAtTime(528, audioContext.currentTime);
oscillator.connect(audioContext.destination);
oscillator.start();
}
function stopTone() {
if (oscillator) {
oscillator.stop();
oscillator = undefined;
}
}
createOscillator() returns an OscillatorNode. The frequency assignment uses setValueAtTime() so the value is scheduled at the audio context’s current time rather than relying on the documented 440 Hz default.
Do not call start() twice on the same oscillator, and do not try to restart one after stop(). An oscillator is a one-use source: create a new node for each playback session.
What does each line of the minimal script mean?
audioContext stores the audio graph so later Play and Stop actions can use the same context. The context is created lazily, which means loading the page does not itself create a tone. createOscillator() adds a periodic-wave source to that graph. Every call creates a distinct source, even when the settings are identical.
The type assignment selects the shape of the waveform. The frequency property is an AudioParam measured in hertz, so setValueAtTime(528, audioContext.currentTime) schedules the requested value at the graph’s present audio time. Connecting the node does not by itself begin sound; start() is the operation that begins the source.
Likewise, stop() ends the source rather than pausing it for later reuse. Clearing the variable after stopping gives the rest of the interface an unambiguous indication that no current oscillator should be considered active.

Place the controls in your HTML and attach their click events to the two functions. Starting from a click gives the browser a clear user action; browser audio-activation rules differ by platform, so a page should not assume that audio may start as soon as it loads.

audioContext ??= new AudioContext();
oscillator = audioContext.createOscillator();

oscillator.frequency.setValueAtTime(528, audioContext.currentTime);
oscillator.connect(audioContext.destination);
oscillator.start();
}

if (oscillator) {
oscillator.stop();
oscillator = undefined;
}
}
document.querySelector("#playButton").addEventListener("click", playTone);
document.querySelector("#stopButton").addEventListener("click", stopTone);
</script>
The guard at the start of playTone() prevents repeated clicks from creating several oscillators at once. Once Stop has been called, the variable is cleared, so Play can construct a new source.

The script should run after the two buttons have been parsed, as shown, or otherwise wait until those elements exist before calling querySelector(). The button’s type="button" prevents it from acting as a form-submission control when the page places it inside a form.
What happens when the code runs?
- Create the context:
new AudioContext()provides the graph in which browser audio nodes operate. The context is created lazily inside the Play handler rather than during page parsing. - Create the source:
audioContext.createOscillator()returns a periodic-wave source. - Choose the waveform:
oscillator.type = "sine"selects a pure sine shape. - Set the pitch:
oscillator.frequency.setValueAtTime(528, audioContext.currentTime)assigns 528 hertz at the current audio time. - Build the route:
oscillator.connect(audioContext.destination)sends the node’s output to the system-selected browser output. - Begin playback:
oscillator.start()starts the source. It continues until Stop callsstop().
The code does not download an audio file or depend on a music service. The waveform is generated in real time by the browser’s audio engine.

Yes. Save a page with the controls and script together, then open it in a modern browser. The following keeps the implementation intentionally small while making the required order visible:

Which waveform should I use for a 528 Hz tone?
Use a sine wave when the goal is a straightforward, single-frequency tone. Other waveform choices keep the nominal fundamental frequency at 528 Hz but add different harmonic content, so they sound noticeably different.
| Waveform | What changes | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
sine |
Smooth, plain periodic tone with the least complicated shape. | Best default for an uncomplicated 528 Hz tone. |
square |
A sharper, pulse-like shape with a more pronounced harmonic character. | Use only when you deliberately want a buzzy timbre. |
sawtooth |
A bright, dense harmonic sound. | Useful for demonstrating how waveform shape affects tone, not for a plain sine-like sound. |
triangle |
A softer alternative to square with its own harmonic balance. | Choose when you want a less aggressive non-sine tone. |
| Custom periodic wave | A waveform supplied through the Web Audio API’s custom periodic-wave facilities. | For experiments that require a deliberately designed timbre. |
Changing type changes the waveform character, not the need to set the frequency. Keep the explicit 528 assignment if the pitch matters.

A waveform comparison is therefore a listening choice, not a different way to request 528 Hz. If two oscillators both receive the same frequency but different types, they still target the same nominal rate of repetition while producing different tone colors. For a reader who wants the least ambiguous result, leave type set to "sine".
How do I control the output volume and listening device?
The oscillator is connected directly to audioContext.destination, which represents the browser’s current audio destination. The operating system and browser decide whether that destination is built-in speakers, an attached speaker, or headphones.

No specialized hardware is required to synthesize the tone. Headphones or speakers are optional ways to hear it, and the selected device’s own volume control determines how loud it is. Begin at a comfortable system volume, especially when testing an unfamiliar waveform, because a continuously running oscillator can be fatiguing at high volume.
If you need a separate volume control in a larger project, place a gain node between the oscillator and the destination. That is an extension of the basic graph; the essential 528 Hz path remains oscillator to destination.

Why might the Play button produce no sound?
Most failures are caused by page wiring, an inactive audio context, or an output setting rather than by the frequency value. Check these causes in order.
- The script did not load: Open the browser developer console and look for a JavaScript syntax or selector error. Confirm that the button IDs in the HTML exactly match the IDs passed to
querySelector(). - Play was not connected: Make sure the event listener is registered after the buttons exist in the document, or put the script at the end of the body.
- The browser requires an activation: Start the tone by clicking Play rather than calling
playTone()during page load. Audio-activation behavior is browser- and platform-dependent, and the supplied API documentation does not establish one universal policy. - The wrong output is selected: Check the operating system’s active audio device and the browser tab’s mute state. The destination follows the system/browser routing.
- The oscillator was stopped already: A stopped oscillator cannot be restarted. Let the next Play call create a new oscillator, as in the example.
- The sound is unexpectedly harsh: Confirm that
typeis still"sine". A square or sawtooth waveform at the same frequency has a different tone.
If the first click does not produce sound, click the button again only after confirming that the handler ran, then inspect the console for an exception. A common implementation mistake is assigning a new oscillator to the variable before stopping the old one; the guard prevents that overlap and makes the current source easier to diagnose.
How can I prevent overlapping oscillators?
Every call to createOscillator() creates another source. If Play is clicked repeatedly without a guard, several 528 Hz oscillators can run simultaneously and make the output louder or phase-dependent. The if (oscillator) return; check in the button example prevents that simple mistake.
Clear the variable when Stop is pressed. If you later add a status label or disable buttons, update that interface state at the same time as the variable so the visible controls reflect whether a source exists.
Do not use a second oscillator as a workaround for a stopped one. The reliable sequence is always create, configure, connect, start; then stop and discard; then repeat that sequence for the next session.

Can I change the tone while it is playing?
Yes. The frequency is an AudioParam, so a running oscillator can receive a new value. For a fixed 528 Hz tone, set it once at the context’s current time as shown. If you add a frequency input, validate the number and schedule the change through the oscillator’s frequency parameter rather than creating unnecessary nodes.
Changing the waveform is also possible by assigning another supported type, but that changes the timbre immediately. Keep the sine setting when the requirement is specifically a plain tone.

For a fixed-frequency demonstration, there is no reason to recreate the source merely to repeat the same value. Recreating is required after Stop because the source has ended; while it is running, its frequency parameter is the appropriate place for a deliberate change.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.What should I know about browser compatibility and page design?
The example uses the standard Web Audio API objects documented for modern browsers: AudioContext, OscillatorNode, AudioParam, node connections, and scheduled start/stop methods. A production page should still handle the possibility that a particular browser requires a user gesture before audio becomes audible.
Use real buttons with text labels rather than a click-only decorative element. That gives keyboard and assistive-technology users a clear way to start and stop the sound. Keep the tone off until the user requests it, and provide a visible Stop control for a source that runs continuously.
The code makes no medical, therapeutic, or wellness claim about 528 Hz. It demonstrates synthesis of a frequency in hertz; the documented API behavior supports describing the generated sound, not attributing health effects to it.
There is also no installation step, audio download, paid service, or special 528 Hz device in this pattern. The browser’s audio graph is the implementation. The only equipment decision is where the destination sends the sound: ordinary speakers or headphones selected through the normal system route.
How do I adapt the example for a reusable tone control?
Keep the audio graph small and make the lifecycle explicit. A reusable component normally stores the context and current oscillator, exposes Play and Stop actions, and creates a fresh oscillator after each stop.

- Initialize the context only when the user first requests playback.
- Refuse a new Play request while an oscillator is already stored.
- Set
typeand the 528 Hz value for every newly created oscillator instead of relying on defaults. - Connect the node to the context destination before starting it.
- Stop the source and clear its reference when the user presses Stop.
- On the next Play request, repeat the creation and setup steps rather than trying to reuse the stopped node.
This lifecycle avoids duplicate tones and matches the one-shot start/stop behavior specified for oscillator sources.
If the component exposes a status message, tie it to the same state used by the guard: report that the tone is playing after a source is started, and report that it is stopped after the reference is cleared. This keeps the visible control model consistent without adding another audio source or changing the frequency path.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a 528 Hz tone require an audio file or special hardware?
No. The browser synthesizes the periodic waveform through its Web Audio API engine. Speakers or headphones are optional output devices for hearing it; they are not part of the tone-generation process.
Why does the browser example use 528 instead of the oscillator default?
The documented default oscillator frequency is 440 Hz. Assigning 528 explicitly ensures that the generated source has the requested frequency instead of inheriting that default.
Can I restart the same OscillatorNode after pressing Stop?
No. Treat an oscillator source as single-use for playback: call Stop, discard that node, and create another with createOscillator() when the user presses Play again.
Is there evidence that 528 Hz improves health or mood?
The Web Audio API documentation establishes how to generate and route the sound, not a therapeutic effect. This implementation should therefore be presented as a tone generator without medical or wellness promises.
The Bottom Line
Set an OscillatorNode to "sine", assign its frequency to 528, connect it to audioContext.destination, and start it from a Play button. Stop the source when requested and create a new oscillator for the next playback. Speakers or headphones are optional listening outputs; the browser performs the synthesis.
