There is no universal winner: The Wolf Among Us is the better fit for a dark murder mystery, fairy-tale noir and morally tense choices; Tales from the Borderlands is the better fit for comedy, character banter and a colorful science-fiction adventure. Both are complete five-episode narrative games, but they aim for different moods. Choose based on whether you want to investigate a troubled community or follow an unlikely partnership through the Borderlands universe.
At a glance
| Name | Best for | Key spec | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Wolf Among Us | Noir atmosphere, murder mystery and moral pressure | Five episodes; based on DC/Vertigo’s Fables | Nov 2026 |
| Tales from the Borderlands | Comedy, ensemble chemistry and sci-fi spectacle | Five episodes; set on Pandora between Borderlands 2 and Borderlands 3 | Nov 2026 |
What are these two games about?
The Wolf Among Us casts you as Bigby Wolf, sheriff of Fabletown: a hidden modern community where figures from fairy tales and folklore are trying to live alongside one another. A brutal murder sets the investigation in motion. The story’s tension comes not only from uncovering what happened, but from the people Bigby questions, the authority he wields and the choices he makes under pressure. The five episodes are “Faith,” “Smoke and Mirrors,” “A Crooked Mile,” “In Sheep’s Clothing” and “Cry Wolf.”

Tales from the Borderlands takes place on Pandora, in the science-fiction setting of the Borderlands series. Its two leads are Rhys, a Hyperion middle manager, and Fiona, a professional grifter. They form an uneasy alliance while pursuing a fortune, and their very different outlooks help drive the story’s comedy and complications. The complete adventure is also split into five episodes.
That premise-level contrast gives a useful first test: if the words “sheriff,” “murder” and “suspects” sound appealing, start with The Wolf Among Us. If you would rather follow a mismatched pair through a comic, high-energy science-fiction setting, start with Tales from the Borderlands.

Which game has the better tone and atmosphere?
The Wolf Among Us has the stronger atmosphere if you want a sustained noir thriller. Its fairy-tale characters are not presented as a whimsical parade of familiar figures; the premise is treated as mature and harsh. The hidden society, the investigation and Bigby’s position as law enforcement create a mood of suspicion and unease. It is the more natural pick when atmosphere is the main reason you play a story game.
Tales from the Borderlands is the better match if you want irreverence, color and momentum. Its official descriptions emphasize the series’ trademark humor and its mix of familiar and new characters. Pandora gives the story a science-fiction backdrop, but the appeal is as much in the personality clashes and comic turns as in the setting itself.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →So, is Tales from the Borderlands funnier than The Wolf Among Us? It is clearly the more openly comic adventure of the two. That does not make it a comedy in place of a story: its appeal depends on the interplay between its leads and supporting cast, while The Wolf Among Us asks you to stay with the pressure and uncertainty of an investigation.
The tonal difference matters over an entire playthrough. A player looking for a serious, uneasy mood may find the lighter Borderlands rhythm less compelling; someone seeking a buoyant adventure may find Wolf’s violence and moral discomfort a poor fit. Neither tone is inherently better. They are different promises to the player.
Which story is better: a murder investigation or an ensemble adventure?
Choose The Wolf Among Us for a story organized around a central murder investigation and the tensions inside Fabletown. Its scenes naturally invite questions: what does a suspect know, what are they hiding, and how should Bigby use his authority? The strongest case for Wolf is the combination of that investigative structure with its oppressive atmosphere.
Choose Tales from the Borderlands for a story driven more by character chemistry and comic interplay. Rhys and Fiona are an unlikely pair, and the contrast between corporate ambition, criminal improvisation and Borderlands absurdity supplies the adventure with its distinctive energy. The supporting cast also matters: this is the choice for players who want a larger ensemble around the central relationship.
That means “which Telltale game has the better story?” does not have a useful one-word answer. If story means a tightly focused mystery with a serious moral frame, Wolf is the stronger fit. If it means a lively group of characters, banter and a more buoyant adventure, Tales is the stronger fit. These are editorial distinctions based on the games’ premises and stated tones, not an objective ranking of writing quality.

Think, too, about what you want to remember afterward. Wolf is built to leave the impression of a place and a difficult investigation; Tales leans toward the personalities and comic situations that arise as its characters pursue a fortune. If one of those experiences sounds more appealing before you begin, that is a better guide than looking for a universal verdict.
Do your choices matter more in one game?
Both games put consequential decisions at the center of the experience, but neither should be mistaken for a role-playing game where every decision creates an entirely separate story. The useful distinction is how each game makes choices feel: Wolf emphasizes judgment, interrogation and Bigby’s moral posture; Tales uses decisions to support relationships, timing and adventure momentum.
The official description of The Wolf Among Us stresses that both what you choose and when you choose it can affect the story. A Game Developers Conference analysis describes its narrative design as “branch and bottleneck”: scenes and relationships can vary, while the story ultimately returns to a planned larger path. In practice, that means choices can matter to a scene or a relationship without sending the game into an unlimited set of completely distinct plotlines.

The difference is emphasis rather than a simple scale of “more” or “less” consequence. In Wolf, a choice can feel like a judgment call about authority and how to treat people in a tense investigation. In Tales, it fits a story whose relationships and comic rhythm are central to the experience.
If you are deciding which one to play because you want the most extensive branching, reset that expectation for both. These are authored narrative adventures, not open-ended branching role-playing games. Play for the variation in scenes, relationships and character responses, rather than expecting every choice to produce a wholly separate campaign.
For a first playthrough, it can help to choose the response that feels right for the character you want to inhabit, rather than trying to guess an invisible “best” outcome. That approach fits both games’ focus on decisions, and it avoids turning a story built around character and tone into a checklist for optimizing every branch.
Which game is easier to start without knowing its universe?
The Wolf Among Us is explicitly designed as an accessible starting point for Fables, even if you have not read the comics. The game takes place before the first issue of the comic series, so a newcomer can follow Bigby’s story without treating prior reading as a prerequisite.

Tales from the Borderlands can be approached as a character story, but it is more directly tied to an established game universe. It takes place on Pandora between Borderlands 2 and Borderlands 3, and its world includes returning villains, Vault Hunters and other recognizable figures. Familiarity with that setting can add context and recognition; the official descriptions establish the placement and returning characters, but do not make prior play a stated requirement.
In short, pick Wolf if you want the more self-contained entry point. Pick Tales if you already enjoy the Borderlands setting, or if a new story in that world sounds appealing even without knowing every reference. The distinction is about how much surrounding lore is part of the setting, not whether either game is a conventional continuation of the other.
Which should you play first?
Play The Wolf Among Us first if your comparison is mainly about atmosphere, mystery construction and morally uncomfortable decisions. Play Tales from the Borderlands first if you care more about comedy, character banter and a lighter adventure rhythm. They are separate stories in separate fictional worlds, so there is no crossover order to follow.
- Pick Wolf for: a murder investigation, mature fairy-tale reinterpretation, tense questioning and a sustained noir mood.
- Pick Tales for: a contrasting pair of leads, a larger ensemble, comic interplay, Pandora and sci-fi spectacle.
- Try both if: you want two different examples of choice-focused episodic storytelling rather than interchangeable versions of the same experience.
If you are still split, use mood as the tie-breaker. Wolf is the stronger first choice for a night when you want a serious mystery; Tales is the stronger first choice when you want a more playful, energetic story. Neither recommendation depends on finishing one game before starting the other.

What is available now, and what does the remaster change?
Both original stories are complete five-episode experiences. The key current release update concerns The Wolf Among Us: The Wolf Among Us Remastered launched digitally worldwide on October 29, 2026. Its official description highlights enhanced visuals and modern presentation while retaining the complete five-episode story.
Physical editions of the remaster are planned for early 2027, according to the launch announcement. That is a future plan, not confirmation that a physical copy is available now. If you specifically want a boxed edition, check current retailer availability rather than assuming that a planned release has already reached stores.
The remaster is relevant if presentation is part of your decision, but it does not change the basic comparison in this article: the central appeal remains Wolf’s noir mystery and morally charged investigation. The original game and the remastered presentation should not be confused with a different story or a newly added episode; the official remaster description says it retains the complete five-episode experience.

For Tales from the Borderlands, official product information identifies a complete five-episode package. The official 2K Store confirms a PS4 purchase route, and PlayStation describes the complete five-episode edition. That gives PS4 players a specific platform reference, but it is not a full current platform list. Availability and platform listings can vary by store and region, so check the exact listing, platform, seller and edition before buying.
No current price comparison is established here, so avoid treating either game as the cheaper option without checking live store prices in your region. The same caution applies to physical copies, used listings and bundles: confirm condition and what is included before purchase. If you are looking for Wolf on disc, its announced physical window is early 2027, not a confirmed November 2026 retail date.
There is also a natural companion-reading option for players who want more of Bigby’s world: Fables comic collections. The game is positioned as a starting point before the comic’s first issue, so the comics are an optional extension rather than required homework. Check the specific collection or volume and retailer details before purchasing, since no particular edition or price is established here.
How we picked the better fit
This is a comparison by player preference, not a claim that one game has objectively superior writing. The criteria are the features established by the games’ official descriptions and the cited narrative analysis: premise, tone, protagonist and ensemble focus, role of decisions, accessibility to newcomers, episode completeness and the current Wolf remaster release. On those criteria, Wolf leads for noir and mystery; Tales leads for comedy and ensemble chemistry.
Neither is a conventional combat-progression game in the comparison that matters here: both are five-episode narrative adventures centered on player decisions. That makes tone, dialogue, setting and the way choices frame a scene more useful deciding factors than looking for a different combat system or an unlimited branching campaign.
The most useful way to decide is to name the experience you want before choosing a title. A murder case, a hidden fairy-tale society and pressure on a sheriff point toward Wolf. A mismatched partnership, corporate and criminal scheming, and a comic science-fiction world point toward Tales. If those preferences are close, choose the tone that sounds better for your next play session.

Do I need to play Borderlands 2 before Tales from the Borderlands?
