Shared, managed, and cloud PHP hosting are not three mutually exclusive products. Shared hosting describes how many customers use a server, managed hosting describes who operates the software stack, and cloud hosting describes the underlying infrastructure. A cloud service can therefore be managed or self-managed, and a managed service can run on shared or cloud infrastructure.

Choose shared hosting when a modest site benefits from a control panel and minimal server work. Choose managed PHP hosting when you want the provider to handle more deployment, patching, monitoring, backups, and support. Choose a cloud virtual machine or application platform when you need resource flexibility and are prepared to manage more of the operating system and application. Security and resilience depend on the exact plan responsibilities, limits, backup process, and SLA—not on the label alone.

What do shared, managed, and cloud PHP hosting actually mean?

The terms describe different dimensions of a hosting service, so comparing them as if they were competing categories can lead to the wrong decision.

Shared hosting is a resource-sharing arrangement

With shared hosting, multiple customer accounts run on the same underlying server environment. The provider normally maintains the server and supplies a control panel, web server, database service, and PHP runtime. You receive less infrastructure control, but routine operating-system work is usually outside your daily tasks.

“Shared” does not specify the quality of isolation, CPU limits, memory limits, backup policy, or support response. Those details vary by plan. A provider may advertise managed PHP versions and SSH/SFTP access on one shared product while another offers different controls.

Managed hosting describes the operator’s responsibilities

Managed hosting means the provider takes responsibility for an agreed portion of the stack. That can include deployment tooling, PHP and web-server configuration, operating-system maintenance, firewalls, monitoring, backups, migrations, and support. The word managed is not a guarantee that every layer is covered: your application code, plugins, credentials, and data may still be your responsibility.

Cloud hosting describes infrastructure

Cloud hosting usually means virtualized or distributed infrastructure that can expose adjustable compute, storage, networking, or geographic choices. A cloud virtual machine can be completely self-managed. A cloud application platform can hide most server administration. A managed cloud service can place a support and maintenance layer over infrastructure from another provider.

For example, DigitalOcean describes Droplets as virtual machines and its App Platform as a more managed deployment path. Cloudways places a management layer over selected infrastructure providers. SiteGround describes its cloud offer as managed and resource-allocated. These are different operating models even though all use the word cloud.

How should you compare PHP hosting plans?

Compare the work and risk you are accepting, not just the advertised CPU, storage, or data-center count. Use the following axes when reviewing a specific plan.

Comparison axis Questions to ask
Management responsibility Who applies operating-system and PHP stack patches, configures the firewall, watches alerts, handles incidents, performs migrations, and answers support requests?
Isolation and resources Are CPU, RAM, storage, processes, inodes, database connections, and concurrent requests shared or allocated? Is account or site isolation documented?
PHP compatibility Which PHP branches can you select, which extensions are available, and how quickly are security releases offered? Will your framework and dependencies run on the selected branch?
Backup and recovery How often are backups made, where are they stored, how long are they retained, who can start a restore, and are storage or restore operations charged separately?
Security controls Are SSL certificates, firewalls or WAF rules, DDoS controls, access restrictions, malware response, patching, and monitoring included? Which controls remain yours?
Resilience and scaling What does the SLA cover, is redundancy documented, does scaling happen automatically or manually, and what happens during a traffic spike or provider outage?
Total cost What are introductory and renewal prices, and what do backup storage, support, CDN, email, bandwidth, and resource increases add?
Operational fit Does the service suit a beginner or small-site owner, or does it provide the technical control an experienced operator or agency needs?

Is shared PHP hosting suitable for a small site?

Shared hosting is often the simplest starting point for a modest PHP site because the provider supplies the server environment and a control panel. It can be a sensible fit when traffic is predictable, deployment is conventional, and you do not need to tune the operating system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What you normally get

Expect a web control panel, PHP and database services, domain and DNS tools, and some form of file transfer. SiteGround’s UK shared-hosting feature description, for example, says it provides a managed PHP version, selectable PHP versions, and SSH/SFTP access. Storm Internet describes Linux shared PHP hosting with a control panel and provider-specific PHP support. Those are individual provider descriptions, not universal shared-hosting specifications.

What you must verify before signing up

  • CPU, memory, process, entry-process, inode, and concurrent-connection limits.
  • Database size, database-user limits, query restrictions, and whether slow queries are throttled.
  • Backup frequency, retention, off-site location, restore fees, and whether a full account restore is possible.
  • PHP branches, extensions, configuration overrides, cron access, SSH/SFTP availability, and deployment restrictions.
  • Support hours, escalation procedures, migration assistance, and incident communication.
  • Renewal pricing and charges for email, CDN use, extra storage, or higher resource tiers.

Where shared hosting becomes a poor fit

Shared hosting becomes harder to operate when one site needs sustained CPU, memory-heavy workers, long-running jobs, custom system packages, queue services, or frequent configuration changes. A busy account can also be affected by provider-level limits or noisy-neighbor policies. Before upgrading, identify the measured bottleneck rather than assuming that a larger disk quota will solve a CPU or concurrency problem.

Do I need managed PHP hosting?

Managed PHP hosting is appropriate when reducing server administration is worth paying for a defined support and maintenance scope. It is especially useful for teams that can maintain application code but do not want to own every operating-system update, firewall rule, monitoring alert, backup job, or deployment detail.

Which tasks may be included?

Cloudways describes managed PHP hosting features such as application deployment, PHP version switching, SSH/SFTP, staging, monitoring, firewall and security features, backups, and scaling. A managed service can also provide migration help or a support channel for infrastructure incidents. Read the plan language carefully: “managed” may cover the host and runtime while leaving code defects, compromised credentials, and application-level misconfiguration to you.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should support actually promise?

Ask whether support only explains controls or can perform changes on your behalf. Confirm the response target for a service outage, whether an engineer investigates failed deployments, whether restores are assisted, and whether emergency work is billed separately. Determine who approves a rollback and how you receive incident updates.

Check the billing details

Cloudways’ PHP page displayed a three-day trial and an off-site backup-storage charge of $0.033 per GB when reviewed on October 25, 2026. Both figures are provider statements that can change; verify the live offer and the amount shown in your account before relying on them. Also check whether staging environments, additional applications, bandwidth, support tiers, or stopped servers continue to incur charges.

Is a cloud VPS managed?

No. A cloud virtual private server is often a self-managed virtual machine unless the plan explicitly adds management. You may receive flexible compute and networking while still being responsible for the operating system, PHP runtime, web server, firewall, monitoring, backups, and recovery.

Self-managed cloud virtual machines

DigitalOcean’s Droplets are described as virtual machines. With this model, you select an image and resources, then secure and operate the instance. You must schedule patches, restrict administrative access, rotate keys, configure logging, test backups, and plan failover. The flexibility is valuable for experienced operators, but the provider’s infrastructure SLA does not replace application or operating-system maintenance.

Managed application platforms

An application platform abstracts more of the server setup. DigitalOcean describes App Platform as a path to deploy without managing infrastructure setup. You still need to understand build settings, PHP runtime support, environment variables, database connectivity, deployment rollbacks, and the platform’s limits. Less server work does not eliminate responsibility for code, secrets, dependencies, and data protection.

Managed cloud services

A managed cloud service combines cloud resources with an operations layer. Cloudways presents managed PHP hosting across selected infrastructure providers, while SiteGround describes cloud hosting with allocated CPU, RAM, and storage, daily off-site geo-distributed backups, SSL, CDN, and scaling. These descriptions show why “cloud” alone cannot tell you who handles maintenance or how recovery works.

Which security controls should a PHP host provide?

Security features are controls to verify, not a comparative security score. SSL, a firewall, patching, access restrictions, and monitoring can all be useful while still leaving serious gaps if credentials, code, dependencies, or restore procedures are neglected.

Use this responsibility checklist

  • Identify who applies operating-system, web-server, database, and PHP security updates, and whether you can defer or test them.
  • Confirm how administrative access is protected: SSH keys, multi-factor authentication, IP restrictions, separate users, and audit logs.
  • Ask what the firewall or WAF blocks, who maintains its rules, and whether DDoS mitigation is included or separately billed.
  • Verify SSL certificate issuance, renewal, coverage for subdomains, and the process for replacing a compromised certificate.
  • Check whether malware scanning, intrusion alerts, log retention, and incident investigation are included.
  • Document your own duties for application updates, dependency vulnerabilities, secrets, database permissions, and least-privilege access.

Separate a feature list from proof

A provider saying that it offers firewalls or monitoring does not establish how effective those controls are in every configuration. No independent comparison in the available evidence ranks these providers by security. Treat each feature as a due-diligence question and request the plan’s technical and contractual details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What makes PHP hosting resilient?

Resilience is the ability to continue operating or recover within an acceptable time after failure. It depends on redundancy, tested backups, scaling behavior, and communication—not simply on owning a cloud server.

Evaluate backups as a recovery system

Ask five specific questions: How often is a backup created? Is it stored off-site and separately protected from the production account? How long is it retained? Can you initiate a restore without opening a ticket? What are the data, storage, and restore charges?

Cloudways displays a charge for off-site backup storage on its PHP page. SiteGround says its cloud plans include daily off-site geo-distributed backups and one-click restores. These are provider descriptions, not independent recovery tests. Request a restore demonstration or run a permitted test on a staging copy, then record the time to recover files, databases, environment variables, and DNS.

Understand scaling behavior

“Scalable” can mean manually resizing a virtual machine, adding workers, moving to a larger plan, or automatically adding capacity. Ask what triggers scaling, whether a restart is required, how long it takes, whether the database scales with the web tier, and how billing changes. A traffic spike can still cause errors if a database, queue, connection pool, or per-account process limit remains fixed.

Read the SLA as a contract

DigitalOcean’s website-hosting page advertises a 99.99% uptime SLA and 14 globally distributed data centers. Those are vendor claims; verify the current SLA, the exact service covered, exclusions, measurement method, regions, and remedy before treating the figure as protection. Cloudways advertises more than 50 data centers, also a provider claim rather than an independently measured availability statistic. A data-center count does not by itself prove redundancy for your application.

How much should you budget?

Price the complete operating model, not the headline monthly number. Shared plans may require paid upgrades when CPU, memory, inode, or process limits are reached. Managed services may add charges for backup storage, extra applications, staging, support, or higher resource tiers. Cloud virtual machines can look inexpensive until you add managed databases, snapshots, monitoring, object storage, bandwidth, email, and engineering time.

Cost item Why it changes the decision
Introductory versus renewal rate A promotional first term does not predict the recurring price; obtain the renewal amount for your billing period.
Backups and storage Off-site copies, retention, snapshots, and restore operations may be metered separately.
Support and management Technical support, migration work, incident response, or a managed operating system may be bundled or sold as an add-on.
Bandwidth and CDN Traffic growth, media delivery, and CDN requests can create charges outside the base plan.
Email and DNS Some hosts include mailboxes; others require a separate service, changing the practical total.
Stopped or resized resources Confirm whether disks, reserved IPs, databases, or other services continue billing when a server is stopped.

Current like-for-like renewal prices and limits were not established for these categories, so obtain a written quote or current checkout total for your region before committing.

Which option fits common PHP workloads?

Use workload, skills, risk tolerance, and recovery requirements together. The following guide is a starting point, not a universal ranking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Situation Likely starting point Reason to reconsider
Personal site, brochure site, or low-change blog Shared hosting Move when resource limits, deployment needs, or recovery requirements exceed the plan.
Business site with revenue impact and a small technical team Managed PHP hosting Confirm that support, incident response, backups, and restore assistance match your outage tolerance.
Custom application with background workers or unusual dependencies Managed cloud or a carefully operated cloud VM Choose self-management only if you can cover patching, monitoring, security, and recovery continuously.
Agency managing several client applications Managed platform or standardized cloud architecture Check tenant isolation, staging, team access, audit logs, and per-application billing.
Highly variable traffic or geographic requirements Cloud platform with documented scaling and regions Test database capacity, autoscaling triggers, egress charges, and failover rather than relying on marketing language.

How do you evaluate a plan before moving a PHP site?

Follow this sequence so that security and recovery are assessed before price becomes the deciding factor.

  1. Inventory the application. Record the PHP branch, framework, extensions, database engine and version, cron jobs, queues, scheduled tasks, outbound email, storage needs, and deployment method.
  2. Set failure objectives. Define the maximum acceptable data loss and downtime. Those targets determine backup frequency, replication, support requirements, and whether a single server is acceptable.
  3. Map responsibilities. Write down who patches each layer, rotates credentials, responds to alerts, investigates an outage, and approves a rollback.
  4. Check plan limits. Request CPU, RAM, process, inode, database, connection, bandwidth, storage, and email limits in writing. Ask what happens when each limit is reached.
  5. Verify PHP compatibility. Confirm selectable branches and extensions against your application’s dependency requirements, then test upgrades in staging.
  6. Examine backups. Confirm off-site location, retention, encryption or access controls, restore permissions, and all related charges. Perform a documented restore test where the provider permits it.
  7. Review security access. Enable multi-factor authentication where available, use separate accounts, restrict SSH, and establish a process for compromised credentials.
  8. Read the SLA and incident policy. Identify the service measured, exclusions, maintenance windows, credit limits, notification channels, and geographic scope.
  9. Model the full bill. Include renewal pricing, backup storage, CDN, email, support, bandwidth, snapshots, databases, and costs that continue while resources are stopped.
  10. Run a staged migration. Copy the site, test PHP behavior, forms, queues, webhooks, cron jobs, SSL, DNS, and rollback steps before changing production records.

What mistakes cause security or resilience problems?

Assuming “cloud” means automatic reliability

A cloud VM can still be one unreplicated server with an unpatched operating system and an untested backup. Ask where redundancy exists and which layer fails over.

Confusing backups with disaster recovery

A backup that cannot be located, decrypted, or restored within your target time is not a usable recovery plan. Include databases, uploaded files, configuration, secrets, and DNS instructions in the recovery test.

Choosing a PHP branch without an upgrade path

Running an old branch for compatibility increases maintenance risk; switching abruptly can break extensions or framework code. Maintain a staging environment and schedule compatibility testing before the provider’s retirement date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring application-level responsibility

A host can secure its platform while your vulnerable plugin, leaked API key, or overly permissive database user compromises the site. Keep dependency updates, code review, secret rotation, and least-privilege access in your own operating procedure.

Relying on a headline SLA

An availability percentage may exclude maintenance, network paths, third-party services, or your own application errors. Read the measurement and remedy clauses and decide whether they match the outage you actually need to prevent.

What should you choose for security and resilience?

Start with the smallest operating model that can meet your recovery and security duties. Shared hosting is reasonable when a simple application fits documented limits and you can accept the provider’s recovery process. Managed PHP hosting is a strong fit when you want a named operator for routine stack work and support, provided the plan clearly defines those duties. Cloud infrastructure is the flexible option for teams that need adjustable resources or specific regions, but select a managed cloud service or budget for the people, tooling, and time required to operate a self-managed VM.

Before purchase, obtain the plan’s limits, backup and restore terms, security responsibilities, scaling behavior, SLA scope, and recurring bill. Those answers—not the words shared, managed, or cloud—determine whether the PHP site is secure enough and recoverable when something fails.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I move a PHP site from shared hosting to a cloud platform without changing its code?

Often, but not always. Differences in PHP extensions, file permissions, cron syntax, web-server rules, database versions, and environment variables can require changes. Build a staging copy, test every integration, and keep a tested DNS rollback before switching traffic.

What PHP version should I select for a production application?

Use the newest branch that your framework, extensions, and dependencies officially support, then test it in staging before production. Keep a documented upgrade path so security updates do not force an emergency migration when an older branch is retired.

Does an SSL certificate protect a PHP site by itself?

No. SSL encrypts traffic between clients and the site, but it does not patch PHP, secure administrator accounts, prevent vulnerable code, or provide backups. Confirm certificate renewal and combine HTTPS with access controls, updates, monitoring, and recovery procedures.

What should I do if my host cannot restore a backup?

Escalate through the provider’s incident process while preserving the current server state for forensic review. If you maintain independent, off-site copies, provision a clean environment, restore the database and files there, rotate credentials, and switch DNS only after validation.
