Choose a host that lets your website run a currently supported PHP branch—preferably PHP 8.4 or 8.5 when your application is compatible—and that provides staged upgrades, rollback, isolation, HTTPS, tested backups, and a documented recovery process. A control panel that merely says “PHP supported” is not enough: the PHP runtime used by the website can differ from the command-line version, and an old branch may already be outside security support.
This guide shows how to verify the real runtime, match PHP to your application and database, assess a host’s security and operational controls, compare plans beyond headline storage, and move without taking an avoidable outage.

For a new production deployment, look for selectable PHP 8.4 and PHP 8.5 branches, then use the newest one your application and extensions have passed in testing. PHP’s policy is two years of active support followed by two years of security-only fixes for critical issues. That makes lifecycle dates and an upgrade path as important as the version number shown on a sales page.
| PHP branch | Status at the October 2026 research date | Security-support end date | Buying implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| PHP 8.5 | Active-support target; PHP 8.5.12 was listed as a current stable release on 21 October 2026 | 31 December 2029 | Strong choice for a new deployment after compatibility testing |
| PHP 8.4 | Active-support target; PHP 8.4.27 was listed as a current stable release on 21 October 2026 | 31 December 2028 | Strong default when an application or extension is not yet ready for 8.5 |
| PHP 8.3 | Security-only support | 31 December 2027 | Reasonable for a compatibility-constrained workload, but plan an upgrade |
| PHP 8.2 | Approaching end of life | 31 December 2026 | Use only as a short transition while you test and schedule migration |
| PHP 8.1 and older | Unsupported | Already ended | Do not select for an internet-facing production site |
These dates describe the PHP project’s support calendar, not a promise that every host will offer a branch until that day. A provider can remove an old runtime earlier, so ask for its own removal policy and patch-level matrix in writing.

How can you verify the PHP version your website actually uses?
Check the web runtime, not just a shell command or a control-panel label. Shared hosts commonly maintain separate PHP binaries for command-line jobs and web requests, and a domain can have a different setting from another site in the same account.
- Use the host’s domain-level selector. In the control panel, open the PHP version manager for the specific domain or virtual host. Record the branch and, if displayed, the patch level.
- Confirm with a temporary web check. Create a short-lived file containing
<?php echo PHP_VERSION; ?>, load it over HTTPS, record the result, and delete the file immediately. A full diagnostic page can reveal secrets, so do not leave one publicly accessible. - Check the command-line runtime separately. Run
php -vthrough SSH or the host’s terminal and compare it with the web result. If they differ, ask which binary runs cron jobs and deployment scripts. - Inspect loaded modules and limits. Use the control panel or a restricted diagnostic to verify extensions,
memory_limit, upload size, execution time, and OPcache settings. Compare those values with your application’s requirements. - Document the setting. Save the domain, branch, patch level, extension list, and date in your deployment notes so a support technician cannot silently move the site to another runtime.
After verification, remove diagnostic files and revoke any temporary access used to create them. A host that cannot tell you the web, CLI, and cron runtimes separately is difficult to operate safely.

Is PHP 8.5 or PHP 8.4 better for hosting?
Neither branch is universally better. PHP 8.5 offers the longest remaining support window in this comparison, while 8.4 can be the safer operational choice when a framework, plugin, proprietary extension, or vendor package has only certified 8.4.
| Decision factor | PHP 8.5 | PHP 8.4 |
|---|---|---|
| Lifecycle runway | Security support listed through 31 December 2029 | Security support listed through 31 December 2028 |
| Compatibility | Requires every application component and extension to support the newer branch | Often has a broader existing compatibility record because it has been available longer |
| Best fit | New projects and stacks tested against 8.5 | Established applications that need a current branch but are not ready for 8.5 |
| Upgrade approach | Adopt after staging tests and a rollback plan | Use as a stable intermediate target while planning later testing |
Ask the host for the exact patch levels available, not only “8.5” or “8.4.” Security fixes are delivered in patch releases, and a provider’s lag can leave a nominally supported branch behind current fixes. Your application’s tested range remains the deciding constraint.
What PHP, database, and extension requirements must you check?
Write down the application’s supported PHP range and required services before comparing hosts. A low-cost plan becomes unusable if it omits one database driver, image library, queue worker, or scheduled task.
WordPress requirements
WordPress recommends PHP 8.3 or greater, MariaDB 10.11 or greater or MySQL 8.0 or greater, and HTTPS. Apache or Nginx is recommended. Confirm that the host offers those database versions and lets you select the required PHP branch per site.

Other PHP applications
- Framework range: Record the framework’s minimum and maximum supported PHP versions and the versions tested by your application vendor.
- Database driver: Verify the required MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, or other driver and its PHP extension. A database server being available does not guarantee that the matching PHP module is loaded.
- Extensions: Check database drivers,
mbstring, intl, curl,GDorImagick,ZIP, andOPcachewhen your code requires them. Ask whether you can enable or disable modules yourself. - Limits: Compare memory, maximum request time, upload size, post size, open-file limits, and PHP worker or process limits with real workload needs.
- Background work: Confirm cron frequency, queue workers, long-running process rules, and whether a supervisor service is included or prohibited.
- Web-server behavior: Ask about Apache or Nginx configuration, URL rewriting, HTTP/2 or HTTP/3 availability, headers, and access to per-directory rules.
- Deployment access: Check SSH, Git, staging, environment variables, private package access, and database import/export limits before signing a contract.
Request a written compatibility matrix. If a provider says an extension is “available,” clarify whether it is enabled for your account, present in both web and CLI runtimes, and supported on every PHP branch you may need.

How should a host handle PHP upgrades?
A safe upgrade is a controlled change, not a one-click switch on the live site. The provider should support staging, compatibility checks, a maintenance window, rollback, and advance communication.
- Clone production to staging. Use a separate domain or protected environment with the same PHP branch, database engine, extensions, web-server settings, scheduled jobs, and representative data.
- Run automated and functional tests. Exercise login, checkout, forms, file uploads, email, scheduled tasks, API calls, image processing, and administrator workflows. Review deprecation warnings and error logs.
- Scan dependencies. Check framework packages, plugins, themes, native extensions, and custom code for the target PHP branch. Replace abandoned components rather than suppressing every warning.
- Take a restorable backup. Capture files and database data separately when possible. Confirm that the backup is readable and that credentials, uploads, and generated assets are included.
- Schedule the production change. Choose a low-traffic window, announce expected behavior, pause conflicting deployments, and define who can approve rollback.
- Switch and observe. Change the domain’s PHP version, clear relevant caches, run smoke tests, and watch status codes, response times, logs, queue depth, and error rates.
- Rollback decisively if needed. Return to the previous branch only if it remains supported and the rollback window is understood. Fix the incompatibility in staging and set a new migration date.
WordPress hosting guidance recommends testing the full stack before making a new PHP version the production default. A host that upgrades every account automatically without a staging or rollback option transfers the operational risk to you.
What security controls should a PHP host provide?
PHP security depends on the host’s operating system, web server, account boundaries, patch process, and incident response—not only on selecting a recent interpreter.
HTTPS and certificate management
HTTPS should be included, renew automatically, and cover every production hostname, including redirects and administrative endpoints. Ask how certificates are issued, renewed, replaced after a failed renewal, and monitored before expiration.
Account isolation
On shared infrastructure, each account should run under its own user identity, with PHP workers prevented from reading neighboring accounts. WordPress specifically advises asking how hosts secure accounts and run PHP using the account username. Clarify filesystem permissions, process isolation, container or virtual-machine boundaries, and what happens when one account is compromised.
Patching and incident response
Ask for the target time to apply critical PHP and operating-system fixes, who performs the work, how advisories are communicated, and what emergency controls are available. The PHP security notice published on 21 October 2026 demonstrates that critical flaws can affect any server hosting a PHP application; supported users were told to update. If immediate remediation is not feasible, the UK National Cyber Security Centre guidance quoted by WordPress.org says organizations should consider taking the system offline until it can be fully mitigated.
Privileges and monitoring
- Use least-privilege database users rather than one administrative credential for every site.
- Ask whether malware scanning, web-application firewall rules, login alerts, and file-change monitoring are included and how false positives are handled.
- Confirm log retention, access to PHP and web-server error logs, and whether support can correlate an incident across logs.
- Find out how the provider handles compromised accounts, credential resets, isolation, forensic preservation, and customer notification.
What backup and recovery features are worth paying for?
Evaluate recovery, not backup marketing. A usable plan states how often backups run, how long they are retained, where they are stored, how they are encrypted, and how you restore a specific file, database, or complete site.

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
- Frequency: Match snapshots or database dumps to how much data your site can afford to lose. A daily copy may be inadequate for an active store.
- Retention: Keep enough history to recover from a compromise discovered weeks later, not merely from yesterday’s failed deployment.
- Separation: Require off-site or otherwise separate storage so a compromised server cannot erase every copy.
- Encryption: Ask whether data is encrypted in transit and at rest, who controls keys, and how keys are rotated.
- Restore procedure: Confirm whether you can restore to a temporary location, download an archive, or recover only through support.
- Testing: Require evidence that restores are exercised. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a recovery plan.
Before switching hosts, perform a test restore into staging and record the time, steps, permissions, database credentials, and DNS changes required. That runbook is more valuable than an advertised backup count.
Which hosting resources and operational limits matter?
Compare the limits that affect execution, not just disk capacity. Two plans with identical storage can behave very differently under concurrent PHP requests or database load.
| Area | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| CPU and RAM | Are limits dedicated, burstable, or shared? How are throttling events reported? | Determines response time during traffic spikes and imports |
| PHP workers | How many concurrent workers are available, and what happens when they are exhausted? | Controls queueing and timeouts under simultaneous requests |
| Storage and inodes | What are the capacity, inode, file-size, and backup exclusions? | Media libraries, caches, mail, and many small files can hit different limits |
| Database | What are connection, size, query-time, and process limits? Is a managed database available? | Prevents database ceilings from becoming application outages |
| Caching | Which page, object, opcode, or CDN caches are included, and can they be bypassed during deployment? | Improves performance but can serve stale content after a release |
| Geography | Where are servers and backups located, and can you select a region? | Affects latency, residency obligations, and disaster recovery |
| Support | What hours, channels, escalation paths, and migration assistance are provided? | Determines how quickly a failed upgrade or incident is contained |
| Commercial terms | What is the introductory price, renewal price, billing term, and cancellation policy? | A low first-year rate can hide a materially higher operating cost |
Match resources to measured traffic, background jobs, and database size. Do not pay for headline storage while accepting a PHP worker limit that queues ordinary requests.
How do you compare PHP hosts objectively?
Use a scorecard and weight security and lifecycle more heavily than promotional storage. Mark any answer that is “not stated” and treat missing information as operational risk rather than assuming the best case.
| Scorecard category | Evidence to record | Suggested priority |
|---|---|---|
| Supported PHP branches | Exact branches, patch levels, removal dates, web/CLI parity | Very high |
| Upgrade and rollback | Staging, compatibility scan, maintenance window, rollback, notifications | Very high |
| Application compatibility | Extensions, database versions, limits, cron, queues, deployment access | Very high |
| HTTPS and isolation | Automatic renewal, account user identity, process and filesystem boundaries | Very high |
| Patching and response | Critical-fix SLA, advisory process, emergency controls, incident contacts | Very high |
| Backups and restore | Frequency, retention, separation, encryption, test-restore evidence | High |
| Resources and performance | CPU, RAM, workers, storage, inodes, database and cache limits | High |
| Migration and support | Import limits, migration help, support hours, escalation | Medium-high |
| Geography | Server and backup regions, latency, residency options | Medium |
| Price | Contract term, introductory rate, renewal rate, add-on fees | Medium |
Give the highest scores to providers that publish a precise runtime matrix and answer operational questions without evasion. A slightly higher monthly fee is usually easier to justify than an emergency migration caused by an unsupported interpreter or an untested restore.
What should you ask a hosting company before switching?
Send these questions to sales or support and keep the written answers with your deployment records.
- Which PHP branches and patch levels can this specific plan run today, and which will be removed next?
- Can I select PHP 8.4 or 8.5 per domain, and are web, CLI, and cron runtimes the same?
- What is your process for critical PHP and operating-system patches, and how are customers notified?
- Can you provide a staging copy, compatibility scan, maintenance window, and one-click rollback?
- Which PHP extensions, database drivers, and image libraries are enabled for each branch?
- Which MariaDB or MySQL versions are available, and what connection, size, and query limits apply?
- Are HTTPS certificates included with automatic renewal and expiration monitoring?
- How are accounts and PHP workers isolated from other customers?
- How often are files and databases backed up, where are copies stored, how long are they retained, and how is encryption handled?
- Can I perform a self-service restore to staging, and when was the last restore test?
- What CPU, RAM, PHP-worker, inode, storage, cron, queue, and process limits apply?
- Which server and backup regions are available, and what support escalation exists during an outage?
- What are the renewal price, billing term, migration charges, and cancellation conditions?
How do you migrate a PHP site safely?
Run the migration as a rehearsed change with a short DNS cutover, not as an improvised upload.

- Inventory the source. Record PHP and database versions, extensions, cron entries, environment variables, DNS records, certificates, scheduled jobs, queues, uploads, and external integrations.
- Build the destination in isolation. Create the account, least-privilege database user, HTTPS certificate, required PHP branch, extensions, limits, and firewall rules without changing public DNS.
- Transfer and restore. Import a recent database dump and copy files with permissions preserved. Exclude secrets from public directories and confirm ownership matches the destination account.
- Test privately. Use a staging hostname or local hosts-file override. Test authentication, forms, email, payments, uploads, APIs, cron, queues, caching, and administrator tools.
- Lower DNS time to live. Do this before the final cutover so cached records expire quickly; follow the DNS provider’s documented behavior rather than assuming an instant change.
- Freeze writes and synchronize. Put the application in maintenance mode if necessary, perform a final database and upload sync, then update DNS.
- Monitor and retain the source. Watch logs, error rates, transactions, queues, and certificates. Keep the old host untouched until the agreed rollback period ends.
Do not change PHP versions, database engines, DNS, and application code simultaneously unless you have no alternative. Isolating changes makes failures diagnosable.
What commonly goes wrong with PHP hosting?
The panel shows a new version but the site still runs an old one
The domain may use a different handler, virtual host, or PHP-FPM pool. Verify the web runtime with a temporary version check and ask support to confirm the domain’s mapping.
A plugin or package fails after an upgrade
Inspect PHP and application logs for removed functions, stricter type handling, or a missing extension. Roll back only within a supported branch, then update or replace the incompatible dependency in staging.
Scheduled jobs use different PHP than web requests
CLI and cron can point to another binary or user environment. Record the absolute PHP path, environment variables, working directory, and branch used by each job.
Backups exist but cannot restore
Common causes include omitted uploads, incompatible database credentials, ownership errors, encrypted archives without accessible keys, or backups stored on the same compromised server. Perform a test restore and document every prerequisite.
Traffic spikes produce timeouts despite ample storage
PHP workers, CPU, RAM, database connections, or process limits may be exhausted. Ask for utilization data and a plan to raise the constrained limit or add caching and queue capacity.
The host retires a branch before your application is ready
Use the provider’s removal notice to set a migration deadline, create a staging target on a supported branch, and involve the application vendor. Staying on an unsupported interpreter is not a substitute for compatibility work.
Best Value
Which PHP hosting choice is right for your site?
Choose the provider that can prove a supported runtime, a realistic upgrade path, and recoverability for your workload. For a new site, start testing on PHP 8.5 and fall back to 8.4 when a documented dependency requires it; for an existing site on an older branch, schedule the compatibility project before its support window closes. Reject any plan that cannot state its patch policy, account isolation, backup-restore procedure, and resource limits in concrete terms.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can one hosting account run different PHP versions for different sites?
Many providers allow a separate PHP-FPM pool or version setting per domain, but this is plan- and control-panel-dependent. Ask whether domains, subdomains, and cron jobs can be assigned independently and whether changing one setting restarts other sites.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
What if my application only supports an unsupported PHP branch?
Treat that as a remediation project, not a hosting feature requirement. Ask the vendor for an upgrade path, isolate the legacy application on a separately protected environment if absolutely necessary, restrict exposure, and set a firm retirement date because unsupported runtimes do not receive PHP security fixes.
Is shared PHP hosting safe for a small business website?
It can be appropriate when the provider uses per-account identities, limits cross-account access, patches the stack promptly, and supplies tested backups. Shared hosting is a poor fit when you need kernel-level controls, unusual extensions, sustained workers, or strict isolation that the plan cannot document.
How long should a PHP upgrade rollback window remain open?
Keep the old environment available until normal traffic cycles, scheduled jobs, payment or reporting runs, and monitoring data have completed successfully. The right duration depends on your business cycle; a site with weekly jobs needs a longer observation period than a brochure site.
Do I need a managed host to keep PHP secure?
No, but an unmanaged server makes you responsible for operating-system patches, PHP packages, web-server configuration, isolation, monitoring, and recovery. Choose managed service when your team cannot meet those duties consistently, and verify exactly what “managed” includes.
