Permanently Block Apple Intelligence Writing Tools on iPhone, iPad, and Mac

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple Intelligence Writing Tools can rewrite, proofread, and otherwise assist with text across Apple apps and the system UI. If you want them permanently blocked on your iPhone, iPad, and Mac, you’ll need to disable Apple Intelligence itself or specifically disable Writing Tools—then lock the setting so it can’t flip back after updates.

This guide gives you the exact places to look in Settings and System Settings, plus practical ways to “make it stick” using Screen Time and MDM-style controls. Use the method that matches how strict you need to be.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Quick definition: “Permanently block” here means the feature stays disabled across restarts and typical iOS/macOS preference resets, and (when you need stronger guarantees) can’t be re-enabled by the same user account.

What Apple Intelligence Writing Tools are (and why disabling them matters)

Writing Tools are part of Apple Intelligence. They enhance text you’re composing with inline actions like rewrite and proofreading-style suggestions in supported Apple apps (and sometimes system UI surfaces exposed to third-party apps).

People disable them for reasons that include privacy preferences, avoiding AI-assisted content creation, limiting automated edits, or reducing the chance that system prompts and suggestions influence how messages are written.

Before you start: prerequisites and where the settings live

Apple Intelligence settings appear only on supported OS versions and hardware, and only after Apple Intelligence is enabled/available for your account and region. If you don’t see the toggles, you may be on an OS version that doesn’t expose them yet.

Look for the Apple Intelligence entry points in these places:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • iPhone/iPad: Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri
  • Mac: System Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri

If your UI is slightly different (common during rollout), search within Settings for “Apple Intelligence”. On macOS, use System Settings search for “Apple Intelligence”.

Method 1: Turn off Apple Intelligence completely (most permanent)

If you want the simplest, most durable block, disable Apple Intelligence entirely. That removes Writing Tools along with other Apple Intelligence behaviors.

iPhone and iPad (iOS/iPadOS)

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apple Intelligence & Siri.
  3. Turn off Apple Intelligence (toggle labeled Apple Intelligence or Use Apple Intelligence, depending on your build).
  4. If prompted, confirm disabling Apple Intelligence.
  5. Restart your iPhone or iPad.

After reboot, Writing Tools should stop appearing in places where Apple Intelligence is required for rewrite/proofread-style assistance.

Mac (macOS)

  1. Open System Settings.
  2. Go to Apple Intelligence & Siri.
  3. Turn off Apple Intelligence.
  4. Close System Settings.
  5. Restart your Mac.

Turning off Apple Intelligence at the system level is the most reliable way to prevent Writing Tools from being used across Apple apps.

Method 2: Disable Writing Tools while leaving other Apple Intelligence features alone

If you want Apple Intelligence disabled only for writing assistance (and keep other Apple Intelligence functions), use the Writing Tools-specific toggle.

Not every device build exposes the same granularity. If you don’t see Writing Tools separately, use Method 1.

iPhone and iPad (Writing Tools toggle)

  1. Open Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri.
  2. Find Writing Tools.
  3. Turn off Writing Tools.
  4. Restart your device.

Keep an eye on any additional toggles that look like “Writing” or “Text” features. Some builds separate “Rewrite” and “Proofread”—disable all writing-related toggles you find.

Mac (Writing Tools toggle)

  1. Open System Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri.
  2. Find the Writing Tools section.
  3. Turn off Writing Tools.
  4. Restart your Mac.

If you see sub-options inside Writing Tools, disable every one that affects rewriting/proofreading/suggestions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Method 3: Prevent re-enabling (Screen Time and managed settings)

Disabling the feature once is easy. Making it “permanent” against user changes is harder. You want controls that stop the same account from flipping the toggles back.

Lock changes with Screen Time (family/shared devices)

Screen Time controls vary by OS version, but the goal is the same: require the Screen Time passcode for changes and restrict access to settings that control Apple Intelligence.

  1. Open Settings → Screen Time.
  2. Tap Turn On Screen Time (or confirm it’s already on).
  3. Set a Screen Time Passcode that the target user doesn’t know.
  4. Go to Content & Privacy Restrictions → turn it on.
  5. Look for settings that control system changes (wording differs by build). Disable user access to changes for settings related to Apple Intelligence, Siri, or allowed features.
  6. After setup, open Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri and confirm the Apple Intelligence / Writing Tools toggles remain off.

If you don’t see any restriction that targets Apple Intelligence specifically, you can still use Screen Time to block changes broadly—however, the strongest guarantee usually comes from MDM.

Use MDM or Configuration Profiles (for true permanence)

If you manage devices (work devices, schools, or stricter household setups), MDM lets you enforce configuration so users can’t re-enable Apple Intelligence Writing Tools.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In an MDM workflow, you’d typically deploy a configuration that disables Apple Intelligence and/or blocks Writing Tools. The exact keys depend on your management stack and the Apple Intelligence policy options available for your OS version.

  • Use MDM to enforce a device policy that disables Apple Intelligence.
  • Alternatively, enforce a policy that specifically disables Writing Tools if your MDM supports that granularity.
  • Apply the policy to device groups, then verify with a compliance report.

If you want, tell me what MDM you use (Jamf, Intune, Mosyle, Kandji, etc.) and the OS versions. I can map the typical configuration approach for that platform.

Edge cases that can make the tools appear anyway

Even when Writing Tools are “off,” a few behaviors can confuse you. Here are the most common causes.

Wrong language/region or partial Apple Intelligence rollout

Apple Intelligence availability depends on language and region support. Sometimes the feature is partly available, and toggles appear/disappear across updates. If you see writing assistance in some apps but not others, verify Apple Intelligence is fully disabled (Method 1) or that Writing Tools toggles are truly off.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keyboard features vs. Writing Tools

Some typing assistance is separate from Apple Intelligence Writing Tools. For example, predictive text and standard autocorrect can remain enabled while AI rewrite/proofread features are disabled. If you’re trying to stop all assistance, you may also need to adjust keyboard settings.

To reduce non-AI writing assistance:

  • Check Settings → General → Keyboard (or Keyboard directly) for features like predictive text.

Third-party apps that call system writing services

Some third-party apps may integrate system writing/suggestion surfaces. Disabling Writing Tools at the system level is the best way to prevent that integration from working.

Troubleshooting: what to try when the toggle won’t stick

If you turn off Apple Intelligence or Writing Tools and they come back after time, use this checklist.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check Apple Intelligence & Siri access after an iOS/macOS update

After an OS update, go back to:

  • iPhone/iPad: Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri
  • Mac: System Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri

Confirm both Apple Intelligence and Writing Tools remain off, depending on which method you used.

Restart, then verify the UI state

A simple restart often clears cached UI surfaces. After reboot, open a supported app (for example, a Notes or Mail composition screen) and check whether rewrite/proofread options exist.

Sign out of Apple services that re-apply preferences

Preferences can sync via Apple accounts. If the toggles keep flipping back across devices, verify that the devices are using the same Apple ID and that the Apple Intelligence-related preferences are consistent.

  • Check whether iCloud sync is keeping settings consistent across devices.
  • If you’re testing, keep it controlled: use one Apple ID at a time for verification.

Reset settings (last resort)

If toggles won’t persist:

  • On iPhone/iPad: Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset All Settings
  • On Mac: System Settings → General → Transfer or Reset → Reset All Settings

This won’t wipe your data, but it will revert many preferences. After the reset, re-check Apple Intelligence & Siri settings immediately.

How to confirm they’re blocked (verification checklist)

Don’t rely on the toggle alone. Validate behavior in the real UI where Writing Tools would appear.

iPhone/iPad test

  1. Open Notes.
  2. Create a short paragraph with a couple of intentional issues (for example: a misspelling and a run-on sentence).
  3. Look for writing assistance UI (rewrite/proofread actions) that would normally appear when Apple Intelligence Writing Tools are active.
  4. Confirm those actions are absent.

If the app still shows rewrite/proofread actions, you likely didn’t fully disable Apple Intelligence or the app uses its own AI.

Mac test

  1. Open Notes on your Mac.
  2. Paste the same test paragraph.
  3. Check for rewrite/proofread options associated with Apple Intelligence Writing Tools.
  4. Confirm they don’t appear and no AI-assisted rewriting occurs when you select the text.

Alternatives if you still want writing help (without Apple Intelligence)

If your goal is just better writing (not AI rewriting), you still have options.

Use built-in grammar tools and manual editing

  • Use spelling check, dictionary, and manual proofreading.
  • For accessibility or readability, consider distraction-free editing modes in your apps.

Choose non-system writing apps

If you want AI assistance but don’t want Apple Intelligence Writing Tools, use apps that run their own model or offer client-controlled settings. Always review their privacy policy and data handling choices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common mistakes

  • Disabling only one toggle on one device and assuming it syncs everywhere. Verify on iPhone, iPad, and Mac separately.
  • Turning off Writing Tools while leaving Apple Intelligence partially enabled. Some builds may still expose other AI text behaviors.
  • Missing app-specific AI settings in third-party apps. If an app has its own AI rewrite feature, system toggles won’t affect it.
  • Assuming predictive text is “AI Writing Tools”. Autocomplete is not the same thing as rewrite/proofread services.

FAQs

Will turning off Apple Intelligence also disable Writing Tools in apps like Mail and Notes?

In most cases, yes. Writing Tools require Apple Intelligence to power rewrite/proofread actions, so disabling Apple Intelligence should remove those capabilities across supported Apple apps.

If I turn off Writing Tools only, will it still show up in every place?

It depends on your OS build and which components are considered “Writing Tools.” If you see rewrite/proofread actions anywhere, switch to Method 1 (turn off Apple Intelligence completely) for a stricter guarantee.

Why don’t I see a Writing Tools toggle on my device?

Two common causes: your device/OS build doesn’t expose the granular setting, or Apple Intelligence isn’t available for your language/region/account. Use the Apple Intelligence & Siri screen as the source of truth.

Can I block Writing Tools for only one user on a shared iPad?

If the device is managed (MDM) you can enforce per-user or per-device policies depending on your setup. On unmanaged devices, Screen Time can help restrict changes, but MDM typically provides the most reliable enforcement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do OS updates re-enable Apple Intelligence?

They can. After major updates, verify Settings/System Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri and re-confirm the relevant toggles are still off.

Bottom Line

If you need the most reliable block, turn off Apple Intelligence on each device (iPhone, iPad, Mac). If you only need to stop rewriting/proofreading, disable Writing Tools specifically—then verify behavior in Notes by checking for rewrite/proofread actions.

To make it truly permanent against user changes, pair the toggle-off approach with Screen Time controls or (best option) MDM enforcement so the settings can’t be flipped back after updates.
