For a text-based PDF, the most practical Python route to a DOCX file is the pdf2docx package. It uses PyMuPDF to read PDF content and layout, then generates an editable Word document through python-docx. Install it with pip install pdf2docx, create a Converter for the input file, call convert(), and close the converter. You can convert every page, a continuous range, or selected zero-based page indexes. Password-protected files are supported by passing the password to the converter. Scanned PDFs are different: they usually need OCR and the correct language data before conversion can produce editable text. No conversion library guarantees pixel-perfect results, so tables, unusual fonts, graphics, reading order, and OCR text should be checked in the resulting DOCX.
What is the recommended way to convert PDF to DOCX in Python?
Use pdf2docx unless you have a specialised document pipeline that requires a different architecture. The package extracts PDF data with PyMuPDF, interprets positions and layout with conversion rules, and writes DOCX content with python-docx. This makes it suitable for ordinary digitally generated PDFs that contain a usable text layer.

The conversion is not a screenshot operation. Text, paragraphs, images, tables, and other objects are reconstructed as Word elements. That reconstruction is why a DOCX can be edited, but it is also why a complicated PDF may need manual cleanup after conversion.
How do I install the PDF-to-DOCX converter?
Install the package in the Python environment that will run your script:

python -m pip install pdf2docx
Using python -m pip helps ensure that pip installs into the same interpreter you will use to execute the conversion. In a virtual environment, activate that environment first. The package brings in the libraries needed for PDF parsing and DOCX generation.
- Input: a readable PDF path.
- Output: a destination path ending in
.docx. - Permissions: the process must be able to read the PDF and write to the destination directory.
- Encrypted files: the PDF password, if one is required to open the file.
- Scans: an OCR engine and language data when the PDF contains page images rather than text.
How do I convert an entire PDF to DOCX?
The basic flow is deliberately short: construct Converter, call convert, and close the converter. Closing releases file handles and conversion resources, which matters when a script processes many files.
from pdf2docx import Converter
pdf_file = 'input.pdf'
docx_file = 'output.docx'
cv = Converter(pdf_file)
cv.convert(docx_file)
cv.close()
With no page-selection arguments, convert() processes all pages. The source PDF is read; the DOCX is written as a separate file. Give the output a different name or place it in another directory if you want to preserve prior results.
A documented shorthand is the parse function:
from pdf2docx import parse
parse('input.pdf', 'output.docx')
The Converter form is more useful when you need a password, selected pages, multiprocessing, or explicit cleanup. The shorthand is convenient for a one-off all-pages conversion.
How do I convert only selected PDF pages?
pdf2docx supports both a continuous range and an explicit list of pages. Page indexes are zero-based, so the first page is index 0, the second is 1, and so on.
Convert a continuous range
Pass start and end to convert when the pages form one uninterrupted span:

from pdf2docx import Converter
cv = Converter('input.pdf')
cv.convert('chapters.docx', start=10, end=20)
cv.close()
This requests the continuous range represented by those page boundaries in the installed pdf2docx version. If the exact end-page convention matters to your workflow, run a small test with a PDF whose page numbers are obvious and confirm the resulting page count before processing a large batch.
Convert an explicit list of pages
Use pages for non-consecutive pages:
from pdf2docx import Converter
cv = Converter('input.pdf')
cv.convert('selected.docx', pages=[0, 2, 4])
cv.close()
The example requests the first, third, and fifth PDF pages. Keep the list zero-based, and do not silently translate printed page numbers from a report into indexes when the document has a cover or unnumbered front matter.
Validate page selection
- Open the PDF and identify its actual zero-based positions.
- Use
pageswhen you need an exact non-contiguous selection. - Write to a new output filename so a failed trial does not overwrite a good DOCX.
- Open the result and verify that headings, tables, and images from the selected pages appear in the expected order.
How can I process a large PDF faster?
For continuous page ranges, the converter exposes multi_processing=True to enable multiprocessing. You can also provide a cpu_count value when you need to limit or control the number of worker processes.
from pdf2docx import Converter
cv = Converter('long-report.pdf')
cv.convert(
'long-report.docx',
start=0,
end=200,
multi_processing=True,
cpu_count=4
)
cv.close()
Multiprocessing is an option for a continuous range, not a promise of a particular speedup. Actual throughput depends on page complexity, available CPU, storage, memory, and the conversion version. There is no authoritative universal benchmark that supports quoting a fixed pages-per-minute figure.

Four conversion workers can consume substantially more memory than one, especially when pages contain large images. Test with a representative file, monitor failures and memory use, then choose a worker count that leaves capacity for the rest of your application.
How do I convert a password-protected PDF?
Pass the password when constructing Converter:
from pdf2docx import Converter
cv = Converter('protected.pdf', password='correct-password')
cv.convert('protected.docx')
cv.close()
If the password is wrong, missing, or the file uses a protection scheme the installed PDF stack cannot open, conversion will fail before a complete DOCX is produced. Treat passwords as secrets: obtain them from a secure input, avoid hard-coding them in a committed script, and do not print them in logs.

How do I convert a scanned PDF into editable DOCX text?
A scanned PDF often contains only page images. In that case, ordinary text extraction has little or nothing to give pdf2docx, so the conversion may produce missing text, empty pages, or image-only content. OCR must identify characters first, and the OCR language must match the document.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use PyMuPDF OCR for text extraction
PyMuPDF documents OCR-assisted extraction through page.get_textpage_ocr() followed by page.get_text(textpage=tp):
import fitz
doc = fitz.open('scanned.pdf')
page = doc[0]
tp = page.get_textpage_ocr()
text = page.get_text(textpage=tp)
print(text)
This example demonstrates OCR-assisted text extraction from one page. A complete production workflow must decide how to retain the OCR text in a searchable PDF or otherwise feed the recognised content into the DOCX-generation stage. The OCR call itself is not a guarantee that every scan will be reconstructed as a well-structured Word document.
Configure the OCR engine and language
PyMuPDF’s document API exposes OCR-related options including use_ocr, force_ocr, ocr_language, and ocr_dpi. The documentation warns that OCR requires a supported engine or a supplied callable. The PyMuPDF project describes a built-in path that needs Tesseract language data and identifies RapidOCR as an alternative pip-installable ONNX-based engine.
- Language: install the trained language data for every language that appears in the pages; using only English data on a French, German, or multilingual scan can degrade recognition.
- Resolution: select an OCR DPI appropriate to the scan. Very low-resolution images lose character detail, while unnecessarily high resolution increases processing cost.
- Force mode:
force_ocr=Trueapplies OCR to every page, including pages that may already have text. Use it when the existing text layer is unreliable, not automatically for every mixed document. - Review: inspect names, numbers, tables, superscripts, footnotes, and symbols manually. OCR errors can look plausible while changing meaning.
For a mixed PDF, detect which pages already have a useful text layer and reserve OCR for image-only pages where possible. This avoids replacing accurate embedded text unnecessarily, while still giving scanned pages a path to editable content.

What quality should I expect from the resulting DOCX?
Expect an editable approximation of the PDF’s structure, not a guaranteed pixel-for-pixel duplicate. PDF is a fixed-layout format; DOCX is a reflowable document format. Fonts, line wrapping, floating objects, and table widths can therefore change when the content is rebuilt.
| PDF characteristic | What can change in DOCX | What to inspect |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary paragraphs with embedded text | Line breaks, spacing, and paragraph boundaries may be reconstructed differently | Headings, lists, indentation, and reading order |
| Tables | Column widths, merged cells, borders, and row heights may need adjustment | Totals, column alignment, wrapped text, and missing cells |
| Unusual fonts | Fallback fonts can alter metrics and cause reflow | Characters, symbols, line breaks, and page count |
| Vector graphics and complex drawings | Objects may not remain editable or may be positioned differently | Charts, diagrams, labels, and overlapping elements |
| Scanned pages | Recognition errors can appear in otherwise readable text | Names, dates, numbers, accents, and table contents |
There is no single accuracy, speed, or layout-fidelity percentage that applies to every PDF. The cited documentation explains the APIs and setup but does not establish a universal benchmark. Measure your own document classes if the output is used in a regulated, legal, financial, or publishing workflow.
Which conversion workflow fits my PDF?
| PDF situation | Recommended approach | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| Digitally generated, text-based PDF | Direct Converter conversion |
Layout differences in tables, fonts, and positioned elements |
| Only a few non-consecutive pages are needed | Use pages=[...] with zero-based indexes |
Selecting the wrong indexes because printed page labels differ |
| One continuous chapter or section | Use start and end |
Misunderstanding the range boundary in a particular version |
| Very long continuous document | Enable multi_processing and optionally set cpu_count |
Higher memory use and workload-dependent performance |
| Password-protected PDF | Pass the password to Converter |
Authentication failure or insecure secret handling |
| Image-only scan | OCR with appropriate engine and language data, then convert the recognised content | Character errors and weak preservation of tables or reading order |
How do I make a production script reliable?
A short script is enough for a one-off conversion, but automated jobs need predictable paths, cleanup, and validation. Use a try/finally block so the converter closes even when a page causes an exception.
from pathlib import Path
from pdf2docx import Converter
source = Path('input.pdf')
target = Path('output.docx')
cv = Converter(str(source))
try:
cv.convert(str(target))
finally:
cv.close()
if not target.exists() or target.stat().st_size == 0:
raise RuntimeError('DOCX output was not created correctly')
- Check that the input exists and is a file before opening it.
- Write to a temporary destination, then move it into place only after conversion and validation succeed.
- Keep the original PDF unchanged so you can reproduce or audit the conversion.
- Record the input name, output name, page-selection arguments, OCR settings, and package version in job metadata rather than embedding secrets in logs.
- Open representative DOCX files in the editor used by your readers; a file that parses successfully can still have unacceptable visual defects.
- For batches, isolate failures per file and retain the error message with the source filename.
What commonly goes wrong, and how can I fix it?
The DOCX is empty or nearly empty
The PDF may be image-only, or its text layer may be malformed. Render a page or inspect extracted text with PyMuPDF; if no meaningful text is present, add an OCR stage with the correct language data before attempting DOCX generation.
Tables are unusable
Tables with merged cells, ruling lines, nested content, or unusual positioning are difficult to infer from fixed coordinates. Verify every numeric cell and consider rebuilding especially complex tables manually after conversion rather than trusting visual similarity alone.
Text appears in the wrong order
PDFs can store text objects in an order that differs from the way a person reads the page. Multi-column layouts, sidebars, headers, and footers are common causes. Compare the DOCX against the original page by page and correct the affected sections.

Fonts or symbols change
Check whether the required font is available on the conversion machine and on the machine opening the DOCX. Missing fonts, private-use symbols, and mathematical characters can alter line wrapping or produce replacement glyphs.
The process fails on a protected file
Confirm the password independently, pass it when constructing Converter, and verify that the account has permission to read the file. Do not repeatedly retry an unknown password in a way that floods logs or locks an upstream storage service.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOCR text is inaccurate
Use the correct language data, improve the scan if possible, and adjust OCR resolution settings. Review low-confidence content manually, especially identifiers, decimal values, dates, and legal wording.
What should I check before delivering the DOCX?
- Confirm the output file opens and is not zero bytes.
- Compare the first, middle, and last pages with the source PDF.
- Check page count, headings, columns, tables, images, headers, footers, and footnotes.
- Search for missing text, replacement characters, duplicated lines, and OCR mistakes.
- Verify that selected-page jobs contain only the intended pages.
- For sensitive files, inspect the output directory and remove unintended temporary or intermediate files.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I convert the original PDF without changing it?
Yes. The normal workflow reads the PDF and writes a separate DOCX path, leaving the source file in place. Keep the original as the authoritative copy because the DOCX is a reconstructed, editable representation.
How should I handle a PDF that mixes English and another language?
Install OCR language data for every language that appears and set the OCR language configuration accordingly. If pages use different languages, process them in language-appropriate groups when your OCR setup cannot recognise all of them reliably in one pass.
Why does a DOCX have a different number of pages than the PDF?
DOCX uses reflowable text, so substituted fonts, changed margins, table widths, and line wrapping can alter pagination. A different page count is not by itself proof that content was lost; compare headings, paragraphs, tables, and figures to locate actual omissions.
Should I convert a complicated PDF automatically without review?
No. Automation is useful for repeatable first-pass conversion, but complex layouts and OCR output require visual and content checks. Establish a review rule for tables, graphics, unusual fonts, and high-stakes text before distributing the DOCX.
