Do not launch the suspect game to create a cloud sync, and do not assume that reinstalling the game removes malware. First determine whether you are dealing with a tampered download, an infected Windows installation, or a save that is merely corrupted. Find the game’s documented save location, look for a copy made before the suspected compromise and stored away from the PC, and make a separate preservation copy of the current saves without changing them. Address the Windows infection, reinstall the game from a trusted platform, then restore only the selected save files and handle any cloud conflict deliberately.
What does “compromised” mean in a PC game-save situation?
The word can describe three different problems, and the safe backup decision depends on which one is plausible.

- A malicious or tampered game download: the installer, executable, crack, mod or another file supplied with the game may be unsafe, while Windows and the save data may not be affected.
- An infected Windows installation: malware may have changed files beyond the game directory. A save copied while the infection was active has uncertain provenance.
- A corrupted save: the game or its save data may be damaged without any malware being present.
A scan result does not certify a save as safe. Microsoft warns that “Backups that are on your PC during an infection might have already been modified by the malware.” Treat every copy made during the suspected infection as a recovery candidate, not as a clean, verified backup.
What should I do before touching the game?
Stop activity that could overwrite the best version of your progress, then determine the scope of the problem.

- Do not launch the suspect game. Starting it can write new files, trigger a cloud upload or replace an older cloud version. Do not run the suspect installer or executable to force a sync.
- Disconnect the PC from unnecessary networks if malware is suspected. Keep only the connection needed to obtain security updates or follow a trusted recovery procedure.
- Record the game, launcher, account and platform. Save locations and cloud behavior vary by title, edition and profile.
- Look for an earlier copy stored away from the affected PC. An offline, external or network backup made before the suspected compromise has stronger provenance than a copy created afterward, although it may not contain your latest progress.
- Run Windows Security’s full scan. If the threat may persist after a normal scan, use Microsoft’s documented offline scan. Continued infection can justify recovering Windows from a known-clean state or performing a clean Windows installation.
A game-only uninstall and reinstall is not a malware-removal procedure. Do not put the old executable, installer, script, mod or an unknown file from the suspect game folder back on the repaired system merely because it sits beside the saves.
Where are PC game saves stored?
Use the developer’s instructions first. The following Windows locations are candidates, not guarantees that a particular game uses them:

Some launchers maintain their own save area. Epic’s support documentation identifies a launcher-local path under %LOCALAPPDATA%EpicGamesLauncherSavedSaves, followed by account and game folders. Steam documents local cloud files under its installation’s userdata[steamID][appID] directory. Those folders can contain launcher metadata as well as game data, so copy only files you can identify as the game’s saves.
Search by the game’s title, developer-documented extension and profile name, but do not move or rename files while investigating. If an Epic save is still missing, Epic directs players to contact the game’s developer; the launcher path is not a universal answer. Exact filenames, extensions, account binding and placement remain title-specific.
How do I make a preservation copy without making the situation worse?
Make the copy with the game closed and keep it separate from any later restore operation. This copy preserves evidence and possible progress; it is not a declaration that the files are clean.

- Close the game and its launcher. Confirm in Task Manager that the game process is no longer writing to the save directory.
- Copy only identified save data. Do not include executables, installers, scripts, mods, DLLs or unknown files from the suspect installation unless a specialist has separately assessed them.
- Create a clearly labeled, read-only-in-practice archive folder. Use a label such as the game name, account, platform, original path and copy date. Keep the original path in a text note so you can reproduce the placement later.
- Keep at least two distinct versions when possible. Preserve the pre-infection copy separately from the current copy; never overwrite one with the other.
- Disconnect the backup after copying. An external USB drive is an optional destination, but it does not sanitize files. Scan removable media before using it on a clean system, and reconnect it only when you need to copy a selected save.
Windows File History can use external or network storage and can restore files to a different location. A game-save folder outside File History’s default libraries may need to be added explicitly. Restoring to another location first lets you inspect and compare files without immediately overwriting a newly created clean save.
Which save copy should I use?
Choose by provenance and compatibility, not by the date alone. A copy made before the suspected compromise and kept off the affected PC is generally the strongest candidate, while a current manual copy may contain more progress but carries more uncertainty.

Can I rely on Steam, Epic or GOG cloud saves?
Cloud saves are title-dependent and can preserve either the version you want or the version you are trying to avoid. Check the game’s store listing, support page and launcher state before allowing synchronization.
Steam Cloud
Steam indicates cloud support on a game’s store page, but developers choose which files are synchronized. Steam lets cloud synchronization be controlled per game or globally. Its support team warns that a failed sync can lead to conflicts and lost progress, so do not start the game through a conflict state until you have copied the preferred local version.

Steam’s game-installation backup is not a save backup. Steam states: “Backups for Valve created games will not include saved games, custom multiplayer maps or configuration files.” Keep installation media and save backups as separate things.
Epic Games Launcher
Epic’s store-page Features tags identify cloud-save support, but implementation remains game-specific. When the launcher presents a conflict, choosing an older file can permanently lose newer progress. Preserve the local version you prefer before selecting either side of the conflict. Epic has both legacy and newer launcher settings, so menu labels can differ by edition.
GOG GALAXY
Where a game implements GOG GALAXY automatic saves, the client synchronizes a specified local directory when the game launches or closes. That behavior does not apply to every title, and a synchronized directory may contain only the files the developer configured.
Cloud storage also cannot establish that a save is clean. It tells you where a version came from, not whether the files were altered before upload.
How should I remediate Windows before reinstalling?
If the concern extends beyond a bad download, repair the operating system before restoring progress.

How do I restore a save after the clean reinstall?
Restore in a controlled sequence so a new clean save remains available if the old one fails.
- Launch the freshly installed game once, if safe, and exit. This lets it create the correct folder structure and profile files. Do not do this on a still-infected Windows installation.
- Confirm the account, platform and edition. A save from a different profile, region, edition or launcher may not be recognized even when the filename looks correct.
- Preserve the newly created clean save. Copy it to a separate folder before replacing anything.
- Use the developer’s documented path. Place only the selected save files in the matching profile directory. Keep the original backup untouched.
- Start the game and check the load menu. Confirm the expected character, slot, achievements or settings without saving over the preserved copies.
- Resolve cloud synchronization deliberately. If the launcher asks whether to use local or cloud data, compare dates and progress first. Do not accept a choice merely to clear the warning.
- Make a new clean backup after successful verification. Store it separately from the pre-reinstall copies and note the new date and game version.
If the game recognizes the files but reports corruption, stop before repeated automatic saves overwrite them. Try another preserved copy or consult the developer’s recovery instructions; do not assume that changing an extension or downloading a random “save fixer” makes the data safe.

The folder is empty
Check every candidate path under the correct Windows user profile, including hidden application-data folders, and verify that you are using the same launcher account. Then check the developer’s instructions and the platform’s cloud status. A launcher folder can hold account-specific data, so searching under a different account can produce a false absence.
The launcher offers local and cloud versions
Cancel or postpone the choice if possible. Copy the local files first, record the dates shown by the launcher, and compare the actual save slots. Select the version that matches the progress you intentionally preserved, knowing that the other version may be overwritten or become unavailable.

The clean install starts from the beginning
Exit without creating more progress, verify the profile and edition, and compare the exact save path with the developer’s instructions. Some games require a particular folder hierarchy or account identifier; copying a file into a similarly named but incorrect directory will not bind it to the profile.
Only a copy made during the suspected infection exists
Keep it isolated and treat it as a last-resort recovery candidate. Finish Windows remediation, restore the game from a trusted source, and restore only the save data you can identify. There is no general procedure that can certify every save as clean solely because the game loads it.

- Game executables and launchers from the suspect installation
- Installers, cracks, key generators and scripts
- Unknown DLLs or files with unfamiliar extensions

This separation is a precaution, not a claim that every mod or auxiliary file is malicious. Reinstall optional content from a trusted source and evaluate it independently.
What is the safest backup routine for future reinstalls?
