Short answer: A password manager’s “zero-knowledge” design normally prevents the company from reading the plaintext passwords, notes, cards, and files in your vault. It does not mean the service collects no data. Providers still need account identifiers, network and device details, billing records, support correspondence, security logs, and often telemetry, cookies, and analytics. The privacy question is therefore two-part: what vault material is cryptographically inaccessible, and what metadata remains visible to operate the service?
This guide explains those boundaries in the 2026 policies of Dashlane, 1Password, LastPass, and Bitwarden, including retention periods, administrator access, optional telemetry, and practical checks you can make before creating an account.

In a password manager, zero knowledge is primarily an access and encryption claim. Your device encrypts vault data before synchronization, and the provider says it does not possess the keys needed to turn that ciphertext back into readable passwords. The promise applies to the protected vault content and not automatically to every record associated with your account.
Depending on the service, vault data can include login credentials, secure notes, payment-card entries, attachments, and files. Some policies also encrypt titles, URLs, tags, and custom icons; others describe those fields separately as metadata. A policy should identify the exact scope rather than relying on the label alone.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Zero knowledge also does not eliminate information needed for recovery, fraud prevention, customer support, payment processing, hosting, or legal compliance. An employee may be unable to read a saved password while still being able to see that an account exists, which device connected, how many items it contains, or when a support ticket was opened.
What do the major password-manager policies say?
These four policies make similar vault-protection promises but describe different categories of metadata and controls. The details below reflect the policies available in 2026; plans, regions, and business arrangements can change the result.

| Provider | Vault and key statement | Examples of operational data described | Privacy-control details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dashlane | Secured data is encrypted in transit and at rest. Dashlane says it cannot decrypt it because it does not hold users’ keys. | Email, payment and plan information, originating IP address, device/browser data, usage events, enabled features, and credential counts. | Behavioral data needed for autofill is available only in aggregated, anonymous form. Production logs retain IP activity for 45 days; backups remain for an additional year. |
| 1Password | Vaults and items are end-to-end encrypted with keys only the user possesses. Titles, URLs, tags, and custom icons are described as encrypted metadata. | Account type and ownership, payment details, name, email, profile picture, connected devices, logins, vault and item counts, and storage use. | Telemetry is optional in most cases. Documented events include finishing onboarding, unlocking the app, and creating an item, with device type, account type, and app version. |
| LastPass | Its local-only, zero-knowledge model encrypts vault data on the device before synchronization. | Registration details, an optional phone number for two-factor authentication or SMS recovery, payment processing, customer content, and other service interactions. | The zero-knowledge statement covers encrypted Customer Content; it does not cover account, support, security, or transaction records. |
| Bitwarden | Vault Data, including credentials, attachments, and files, is encrypted with keys under the user’s control. Bitwarden says it cannot access Vault Data. | Names, email and contact details, account item counts, support and payment information, device and IP information, and website analytics. | The policy discusses cookies, Google Analytics, subprocessors, international transfers, and disclosures for legal, security, operational, and corporate-transaction purposes. |
Dashlane: encrypted vault, measurable service telemetry
Dashlane requires an email address to create an account and processes payment and plan information when applicable. It records originating IP addresses, device and browser characteristics, and usage or event data. Events can include which internal functions are enabled and how many credentials are stored. Dashlane states that autofill-related behavioral data is provided only in aggregated, anonymous form.
Its policy says: “Because of our zero-knowledge architecture, we do not and cannot know what information you store on the Services.” That sentence addresses the contents of the encrypted service, not the surrounding account and operational records.
1Password: encrypted metadata and mostly optional telemetry
1Password says that vaults and items are end-to-end encrypted and that only the user possesses the keys. It specifically lists titles, URLs, tags, and custom icons as encrypted metadata, a useful distinction because these fields can reveal a great deal about a person’s accounts if left readable.
The company describes collecting account type, ownership, payment information, name, email, profile picture, connected devices, login activity, vault and item counts, and storage use. Its telemetry documentation says participation is optional in most cases. Examples include completing onboarding, unlocking the app, and creating an item; the associated metadata can include device type, account type, and app version. Passwords, usernames, and saved item fields remain private according to that documentation.

- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
LastPass: a narrow zero-knowledge boundary
LastPass describes a local-only model in which the device encrypts vault data before it is synchronized. Its notice also covers account registration, an optional phone number used for two-factor authentication or SMS recovery, payment processing, customer content, and other interactions with the service.
The practical reading is narrow: encrypted Customer Content is the material the company says it cannot read. The same architecture does not prevent collection of the records required to authenticate an account, process a subscription, investigate abuse, answer a support request, or document a security event.
Bitwarden: a defined split between Vault Data and Administrative Data
Bitwarden separates “Vault Data” from “Administrative Data.” Credentials, attachments, and files fall into Vault Data and are encrypted under keys you control. Administrative Data includes names, email addresses, phone or other contact details, item counts, support exchanges, and payment information.

The concise promise is: “Bitwarden cannot access Vault Data.” That does not make Administrative Data invisible.
What information can a password manager still track?
Even when vault contents are unreadable, a provider can process several kinds of metadata. Each category has a different operational reason and privacy impact.
Account and identity information
- Email addresses are commonly required to create and verify an account.
- Name, profile picture, phone number, contact details, account type, ownership, and employer or business information may be collected, especially for team plans.
- A phone number can be optional for features such as two-factor authentication or SMS recovery, as described by LastPass.
Network and device information
Services may record the originating IP address, operating system, browser, device type or identifier, language, app version, and connected devices. These signals help deliver the correct client, detect suspicious logins, troubleshoot failures, and enforce abuse controls. They can also reveal approximate location or a pattern of devices used to access an account.
Usage, diagnostics, and telemetry
Usage records can include logins, app launches, onboarding completion, vault and item counts, storage consumed, feature switches, autofill-related events, crash diagnostics, and performance measurements. The privacy difference is whether participation is optional, whether fields are aggregated or anonymous, and whether the event payload contains readable item data.

1Password documents optional telemetry in most cases and says passwords, usernames, and saved item fields stay private. Dashlane describes event data such as enabled functions and credential counts, while its autofill behavioral information is aggregated and anonymous. A policy that does not offer an opt-out should be treated differently from one that does.
Billing and commercial records
Subscription tier, payment-processing records, invoices, transaction identifiers, and account ownership are separate from the encrypted vault. Payment processors may handle card details, while the password manager retains enough information to reconcile a plan, prevent fraud, issue refunds, or meet tax obligations.
Support and customer correspondence
Support tickets, chat transcripts, diagnostic files, sales calls, and user-research sessions can contain personal information you choose to disclose. Avoid pasting passwords or recovery codes into a ticket. Dashlane’s policy says some recorded sales, support, and user-research calls can be retained for up to two years when you have consented.
Cookies and website analytics
The provider’s marketing site may record page visits, load speed, time on page, browser and device categories, and interactions with campaigns. Bitwarden’s policy explicitly discusses site cookies and Google Analytics. Such web analytics are distinct from encrypted vault synchronization and may follow a different consent or opt-out mechanism.

Policies commonly permit sharing identifiable operational data with subprocessors for hosting, analytics, payment, email delivery, security, or support. They may also allow disclosure when legally required, to investigate fraud or abuse, to protect users, or during a merger, acquisition, financing, or sale of assets. Those provisions generally concern account and service records; they do not grant a provider the missing key to decrypt a properly protected vault.
Can a password-manager company see titles, URLs, or item counts?
There is no universal answer. Some providers encrypt titles, URLs, tags, and icons along with the item; others may process counts or event summaries even when the item fields themselves are encrypted.
1Password says titles, URLs, tags, and custom icons are encrypted metadata. Dashlane says event data may include how many credentials are stored and which features are enabled, while behavioral data for autofill is aggregated and anonymous. Bitwarden distinguishes encrypted Vault Data from Administrative Data that can include account item counts. These examples show why “the vault is encrypted” is not enough: ask which fields and summaries sit outside the vault cipher.

Readable URLs can expose health portals, financial institutions, employers, political groups, or private communities even if usernames and passwords remain secret. Item counts and storage usage reveal less, but can still identify account activity patterns. The policy should state whether such fields are encrypted, aggregated, visible to administrators, or retained in logs.

How long do password managers retain operational data?
Retention is often more concrete than marketing language. The following periods are specifically stated in Dashlane’s 2026 policy; the other policies in this comparison do not provide an equivalent figure in the supplied material.
| Record type | Stated period | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Dashlane production IP activity | 45 days | IP activity in production logs; backups are stored for an additional year. |
| Dashlane registration, billing, and support records after account deletion | Up to 30 days | Applies to certain records, not necessarily every data category. |
| Dashlane recorded sales, support, and user-research calls | Up to two years | Only when recording was consented to; the period applies to some calls. |
| 1Password, LastPass, and Bitwarden examples | Not stated here | Check the current policy for your region, plan, and record type before relying on a retention assumption. |
Deletion is therefore not always instantaneous erasure from every copy. Backups, accounting obligations, fraud investigations, legal holds, and support systems can follow separate schedules. Look for a retention table or deletion section that names the record, clock, backup treatment, and exceptions.
What should you compare before choosing a password manager?
Read the privacy policy and security documentation together. Use this checklist to turn broad promises into comparable questions:
- Vault scope: Which credentials, notes, attachments, files, titles, URLs, tags, and icons are encrypted?
- Key custody: Who creates, stores, and can recover the encryption keys? Can a support agent or administrator ever obtain plaintext?
- Metadata visibility: Are item counts, storage use, device lists, login times, and behavioral signals encrypted, aggregated, or readable?
- Telemetry controls: Is diagnostics collection optional? Can you disable analytics separately for the app, browser extension, and website?
- Retention and deletion: How long are IP logs, support records, backups, recordings, and billing data retained after closure?
- Third parties and transfers: Which subprocessors receive data, in which countries, and under what transfer safeguards?
- Recovery model: What happens if you lose the account password or secret key? A convenient recovery path may require additional escrowed information.
- Business administration: Can an employer view item counts, domain activity, device status, or other account metadata?
- Legal disclosures: What can be disclosed for subpoenas, security incidents, fraud prevention, or a corporate transaction?
How can you reduce the metadata a password manager collects?
- Choose the minimum account details allowed. If a phone number or profile photo is optional, leave it blank unless the feature is worth the exposure.
- Disable optional telemetry. Review privacy settings in the desktop app, mobile app, browser extension, and web dashboard; an opt-out in one client may not cover another.
- Limit website analytics separately. Reject nonessential cookies or use the site’s privacy controls when browsing documentation and pricing pages.
- Keep support messages sterile. Send error codes and redacted screenshots, never passwords, one-time codes, recovery phrases, or unredacted vault exports.
- Review connected devices. Remove old phones and browsers, rotate credentials after a lost device, and investigate unfamiliar login notifications.
- Use a separate email alias. An alias can reduce linkage between the password-manager account and your everyday identity, although it does not conceal IP or device data.
- Recheck the policy after major changes. New telemetry, team features, subprocessors, or retention terms can appear when a provider changes its app or plan.
Does a FIDO2 security key change what the provider can track?
A FIDO2 hardware security key strengthens authentication; it does not alter the password manager’s collection of account and operational metadata. Dashlane’s security documentation includes security-key accounts within its zero-knowledge approach, so the key protects the login step while the vault remains encrypted.
Using a key can reduce reliance on SMS recovery and make phishing substantially harder, but the service can still record the account email, IP address, device, plan, login event, and support history. Treat the key as an authentication control, not as an anonymity tool or a substitute for reading the privacy policy.
Are business and family accounts different?
Yes. A team owner or administrator may need visibility into membership, billing, domain ownership, provisioning status, device compliance, or item counts even when individual vault fields remain encrypted. The exact boundary depends on the plan and administrative features.

Before joining an employer-managed account, ask whether administrators can suspend access, reset authentication, recover an account, export organizational data, or see activity reports. Keep personal credentials in a separate personal vault when the policy or employment relationship does not clearly protect them.
What is the practical verdict on password-manager privacy policies?
Zero knowledge is valuable but specific: it limits provider access to plaintext vault content and encryption keys. It is not a promise of zero telemetry, zero cookies, zero retention, or zero disclosure. The strongest choice is the policy that clearly defines encrypted fields, minimizes readable metadata, offers meaningful telemetry controls, states retention periods, and explains recovery and administrator access for your exact plan and region.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can deleting my password-manager account erase every copy immediately?
Usually not. Providers may keep limited billing, fraud, legal, backup, or support records for a stated period, and deletion clocks can differ by data category. Ask support which records are scheduled for deletion and whether backups expire on a separate schedule.
Should I avoid saving website URLs in a password vault?
Not necessarily; URLs make autofill and matching more reliable. If a provider does not clearly encrypt URL metadata, consider whether revealing the service names associated with your account would create a privacy problem and use a more restrictive setup where available.
Can customer support recover a forgotten master password?
A true zero-knowledge design generally prevents staff from decrypting your vault, so recovery may be limited or may use an account-recovery mechanism with different trust assumptions. Read the provider’s emergency-access and recovery documentation before you depend on it.
Does private browsing stop a password manager from recording IP addresses?
No. Private-browsing mode mainly limits local browser history and cookies; the service can still receive the network connection’s IP address and device or app details when you sign in or synchronize.
