The safest way to set up a new gaming console for a child is to use a separate child or supervised account, then configure four independent areas: age and content ratings, communication, play time, and spending. Start with the adult account, update the console, create the child identity, apply restrictions on the platform and in its companion app, and test the child profile before handing over the controller.
This guide covers PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X|S. Menu names change with system updates, so use the console model and the current family-safety app shown for your account. A console-wide rating filter or PIN does not automatically control every game’s own chat, web, account, or purchase settings.

Where does each console manage parental controls?
All three platforms separate the adult account from the child account, but the strongest controls are spread across different surfaces.
| Platform | Child identity | Main control surfaces | Important detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | Child account in a PlayStation family | PS5 Family Management and the PlayStation Family app | Controls cover games, content, communication, web browsing, playtime, spending, and activity information. |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Child or supervised Nintendo Account | Console settings, Nintendo Account family settings, and the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app | Nintendo says the smartphone app provides the most restriction options. Children under 16 and supervised users need the linked app and additional settings for GameChat. |
| Xbox Series X|S | Child Microsoft account in a family group | Console family settings and Microsoft Family Safety/Xbox controls | Microsoft changes labels and screens; verify the current interface for your console and account before following an old menu path. |
What should I do before turning on restrictions?
Prepare the accounts and console first. Restrictions attach to the child identity, not reliably to a shared adult profile.

- Connect the console to the internet so it can receive system and safety updates.
- Install every available system update before choosing ratings or schedules. An update can move a setting or add a new communication feature.
- Sign in with the adult account that will own the family group and purchases.
- Protect the adult profile with a passcode, PIN, or the account-security method offered by the platform. Do not give that credential to the child.
- Create a separate child or supervised account using the child’s real age, or the age level your household has chosen. Do not let the child play through the adult profile.
- Decide in advance which games, chat types, online friends, play hours, and spending permissions are acceptable. This makes exceptions deliberate instead of accidental.
- If a payment method is already stored, review who can use it before the child signs in. A child profile should not inherit unrestricted access to the adult wallet.
A separate account preserves the parent’s purchasing and account authority, keeps activity associated with the right person, and lets age, chat, time, and spending controls follow the child identity.
How do I set parental controls on a PlayStation 5?
On PS5, create a PlayStation family and add the child before changing restrictions. The documented console route is Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management; the PlayStation Family app adds mobile controls and activity information.

- Open Family Management. On the PS5, go to
Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management. Follow the prompts to create or confirm the family and add the child account. - Select the child. Choose the child’s profile rather than the adult profile. Every later setting in this section must be applied to that child identity.
- Choose a games-and-content level. PlayStation preset levels govern which PS5 games and apps can start. Use the child’s age as a starting point, then customize individual permissions where the preset is too strict or too broad.
- Review communication and user-generated content. The communication control can disable text messages and voice chat and limit user-generated content. A child can request an exception for a particular game; the adult can approve or deny that request.
- Set web, playtime, and spending controls. Family Management includes web-browsing options, playtime controls, and a monthly spending limit. Set the spending limit before the child uses the store.
- Install and link the PlayStation Family app if useful. The app lets a parent manage many settings from a phone and view activity information. Check that notifications and the correct family account are selected.
PlayStation describes the relationship between these tools this way: “Parental controls and spending limits work alongside family management and playtime controls to help you manage your child’s activity.” Treat that as a set of separate checks rather than one master switch.
What does the PS5 communication setting block?
Restricting “Communication and User-Generated Content” can stop text messages and voice chat and limit user-created material. It does not guarantee that every game or service will use the same control. PlayStation specifically notes that Roblox communications are independent of the selected PS4/PS5 parental-control settings, so review that service’s account controls separately.
How do I set parental controls on a Nintendo Switch 2?
Switch 2 controls are distributed across the console, Nintendo Account family settings, and the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app. Nintendo says the smartphone app provides the most restriction options and features, so link it before setting schedules or GameChat permissions.
- Update and connect the console. Connect the Switch 2 to the internet and install system updates. Sign in with the adult Nintendo Account that will manage the family.
- Create or add the child account. In the Nintendo Account family settings, create a child account or add the existing supervised user. Keep the child on that account instead of the adult account.
- Link the parental-controls app. Install the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app on the parent’s smartphone and link it to the console shown in the app. Use the parent’s account, not the child’s, to complete the link.
- Set restricted-software and content levels. Choose an age-based level for games and other software, then review exceptions individually. Nintendo also provides eShop-related restrictions, including controls over spending and the visibility of age-restricted content.
- Configure daily play time. Set a daily limit that fits the child’s routine. The app can also apply bedtime and morning-start restrictions, creating a blocked period rather than only a total number of minutes.
- Configure communication and GameChat. Review approved friends, video chat, and GameChat history in the available family controls. Children under 16 and supervised users need the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app linked to the console and additional parent settings before they can use GameChat.
- Save, then verify from the child profile. Sign out of the adult account, sign in as the child, and check a restricted game, the eShop, and GameChat-related screens.
GameChat is not the same as a general game-rating filter. Its age requirement and app-linking requirement must be satisfied even if the child is allowed to play the underlying game.

How do I set up parental controls on Xbox Series X|S?
Xbox uses a child Microsoft account inside a family group, with controls presented through the current Xbox and Microsoft Family Safety interfaces. Microsoft’s labels can change with account type, region, and software updates, so use the family screens currently shown for your account rather than relying on a path copied from an older Xbox guide.
- Update the Xbox and secure the adult account. Connect the console, install updates, and sign in with the adult Microsoft account. Protect the adult profile and keep its credentials private.
- Create or add the child Microsoft account. Add the child to the family group and sign the child into a separate Xbox profile. Do not use the adult gamer profile as the child’s identity.
- Open the family-safety controls. From the current Xbox family settings or Microsoft Family Safety view, select the child account. If the app offers a choice of family members or devices, select the child and the correct Xbox.
- Review age and content permissions. Set the child’s game and app level, then inspect individual exceptions. A rating filter is only the starting point; games can have their own account and communication settings.
- Review communication, screen time, and spending. Use the current family controls to decide who the child can communicate with, when the console is available, and whether purchases require approval. The exact labels and location should be confirmed against the live Microsoft interface.
- Test while signed in as the child. Attempt to open a restricted game, enter a communication feature, view the store, and use the console during a restricted period. If a result differs from the family setting, check the game’s own account controls and which profile is signed in.
Because the available Xbox instructions and menu labels can change, record the date of your setup and revisit the current Family Safety screens after major console or app updates.
How should I choose age and content restrictions?
Use the child’s real age or your family’s chosen age level as the baseline, then make specific exceptions only after inspecting the game or app. Age settings, communication permissions, playtime, and spending are separate controls.
- Start with the platform preset. On PS5, preset levels govern which PS5 games and apps can start, with customization available. Switch 2 provides restricted-software age settings and eShop restrictions. Xbox presents equivalent family controls through its current interface.
- Check the actual content category. A game may be acceptable for its violence rating but unsuitable because of user-generated content, web access, gambling-like mechanics, or open voice chat. Review those categories rather than treating the age label as a complete safety assessment.
- Use exceptions sparingly. If a child requests access to one game, approve that title only when the platform offers a title-specific exception. Keep the general age level intact for everything else.
- Recheck after updates. New modes, downloadable content, and account features can add communication or store surfaces that were not present when the original permission was chosen.
How do I stop my child from chatting with strangers?
Review text, voice, video, friend, and user-generated-content permissions separately, then check the game’s own account settings. A platform-level communication block is useful, but it is not universal across every service.
PlayStation 5
In the child’s Family Management settings, restrict “Communication and User-Generated Content” to disable text messages and voice chat and limit user-generated content. If the child requests an exception for a particular game, the adult can review that request rather than granting a blanket override. Roblox communications are controlled independently, so inspect the Roblox account settings as well.
Nintendo Switch 2
Use the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app to review approved friends, video chat, and GameChat history. For children under 16 and supervised users, GameChat requires the linked app and additional parent settings; without those requirements, GameChat should not be treated as available simply because the console is online.

Xbox Series X|S
In the current Microsoft family controls, review communication permissions and the child’s approved contacts. Because the exact Xbox screens vary, confirm each permission on the live account and then repeat the check inside any game that has its own chat, friend list, or account system.
How do I limit gaming time and create downtime?
Set a daily allowance and a blocked period where the platform supports one. A daily limit answers “how long,” while bedtime or morning restrictions answer “when.”
- PS5: Use Family Management or the PlayStation Family app to configure playtime controls for the child. Check the child profile’s schedule rather than changing the adult profile’s console availability.
- Switch 2: The Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app supports daily play-time limits plus bedtime and morning-start restrictions. Choose a schedule that matches school, sleep, and household routines.
- Xbox Series X|S: Use the current Xbox/Microsoft Family Safety family controls for the child account. Since Microsoft can change the labels and layout, verify the saved schedule on the device and in the current family view.
After saving a schedule, sign in as the child and check both a normal play session and a time that should be blocked. If the result is wrong, first confirm that the child—not the adult—is signed in and that the schedule was saved to the correct console or account.
How do I prevent unauthorized purchases?
Set spending restrictions before adding or exposing a payment method to the child profile. Review the console store, the family account, subscriptions, downloadable content, and in-game purchases because they may appear in different account surfaces.
PlayStation 5
Family Management includes a monthly spending limit for the child. Set it before the first store visit and keep the adult account protected with its passcode or security method. If a game has its own account or payment flow, inspect that account separately.
Nintendo Switch 2
Nintendo’s eShop restrictions can limit spending and the visibility of age-restricted content. Apply them through the Nintendo Account family settings and the parental-controls tools, then check the eShop while signed in as the child.

Xbox Series X|S
Use the current Microsoft family controls to require approval for child spending and review the account’s payment permissions. The exact labels are interface-dependent, so confirm the setting on the live Xbox/Microsoft Family Safety screens before relying on it.
Do not assume that blocking a console store also blocks every subscription renewal, downloadable-content purchase, or transaction made inside a game. Review the account that owns each payment method and remove unnecessary saved methods from the child-facing profile.
How do I test the child profile before handing over the console?
Testing the child profile is a recommended setup step: it verifies the practical result instead of assuming that a saved toggle is working.
- Sign out of the adult account and sign in only as the child or supervised user.
- Attempt to launch a game or app above the selected age level. Confirm that the restriction appears and that an adult exception is required.
- Open the store and try to view age-restricted content. Check whether spending is blocked, approval is requested, or the configured limit applies.
- Open a text, voice, video, or GameChat feature. Confirm the expected block, approved-friend rule, or request-for-permission behavior.
- Start a normal game session and check the behavior near the daily limit or blocked period.
- Review the activity view in the relevant family app, if available, and confirm that the activity belongs to the child account.
- Return to the adult account and document any title-specific exceptions, approved friends, spending allowance, and schedule so another caregiver can apply the same rules.
What should I do when a restriction does not work?
Most failures come from the wrong account, a game-level setting, an unlinked app, or a control that was changed in one surface but not another.
- A restricted game still opens: Confirm the child profile is active, the game is covered by the selected age level, and no title-specific exception was approved. Check downloadable content and the game’s own account settings.
- Chat still works: Recheck text, voice, video, and user-generated-content permissions individually. On PS5, inspect Roblox separately; on Switch 2, verify the GameChat app link and under-16 or supervised-user requirements.
- The child can buy something: Check the child account’s spending control, the adult wallet, subscriptions, and any payment method stored in a game publisher’s account. Test from the child profile rather than the adult profile.
- The time limit has no effect: Verify that the schedule belongs to the correct child and console, that the latest settings were saved, and that the child is not using an unrestricted adult profile.
- A menu is missing: Install pending system or app updates, then look in the current family-management surface for the console model. Platform names and locations change, especially in companion apps.
- A child asks for access: Prefer a title-specific exception or approved contact over loosening the entire age or communication policy. Revoke the exception if the game or social feature changes.
How often should I review the settings?
Review the child profile whenever the console, parental-control app, game, or account changes. A short monthly check is useful even when nothing appears wrong.
- Look for newly installed games, downloadable content, and services with separate accounts.
- Review approved friends, communication history where available, and any pending exception requests.
- Confirm the play schedule still matches school, holidays, and sleep routines.
- Check spending activity, subscriptions, and the adult account’s payment methods.
- Re-test one restricted game, one communication feature, the store, and the time schedule after a major update.
Keep the adult account private and let every caregiver know which profile is the child profile. That simple account separation prevents many bypasses that a console PIN or rating filter cannot stop by itself.

Frequently asked questions
Do parental controls block every game’s chat automatically?
No. Platform controls can restrict common text, voice, video, or user-generated-content features, but an individual game or service may apply separate account-level permissions. Review the game’s own privacy and communication settings whenever chat remains available.
Can a child under 16 use GameChat on Switch 2?
Yes, but Nintendo requires the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app to be linked to the console and additional parent settings to be configured. The same requirement applies to supervised users, so an online connection alone is not enough.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy is sharing the adult account a bad shortcut?
A shared adult profile carries the parent’s purchase authority, age permissions, friends, and account recovery rights. A separate child identity lets restrictions and activity reporting follow the child and keeps the adult credentials private.
What if the instructions I find do not match my console?
Use the current console model, system version, and companion-app name shown on the device. Platform vendors move controls between on-console family menus, web account settings, and phone apps, so an older guide may describe a path that no longer exists.
Should I set the strictest possible rating?
Start with an age-appropriate preset, then review the specific content and social features of each requested game. A targeted exception preserves safer defaults for every other title while allowing a parent to make an informed decision.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a child use the same parental-control settings on a second console?
The restrictions are tied primarily to the child or supervised account, but each console and companion app still needs to be linked and checked. When a second device is added, repeat the profile, communication, time, and spending tests instead of assuming the first device’s state transferred.

Not necessarily. Voice, text, video, friend approval, and user-generated content can be separate permissions. Review each category and then inspect the game’s own social settings.
What information can a parent see in the family apps?
Available activity information differs by platform and setting. PlayStation’s Family app provides activity information, while Nintendo’s tools include features such as GameChat history; check the current app view for the child account rather than assuming every platform records the same data.
Can I change the limits temporarily during school holidays?
Yes. Family-management tools are designed to let the adult adjust schedules, content permissions, and spending controls. Make a temporary change on the child profile, record what changed, and restore the normal settings when the holiday period ends.
