Paperclip on a VPS gives you a persistent, remotely reachable control plane for AI agents, not an AI model that runs by itself. Paperclip organizes agents, tasks, goals, roles, budgets, approvals and activity. The VPS keeps that service online and accessible through your domain. Agents still run only when their configured runtime receives a trigger, such as assigned work, a follow-up message, an optional timer heartbeat or a scheduled routine. That distinction matters: server uptime makes Paperclip available, while triggers and model runtimes determine when work actually happens.

The official installation guidance describes a Linux VPS with a custom domain, HTTPS and login. It lists 1 vCPU and 2 GB of RAM as enough to get started, using Ubuntu 22.04 or 24.04 as reference distributions. Treat those figures as a starter example, not a production capacity guarantee.

What is Paperclip VPS hosting?

Paperclip is a management and governance layer for a team of agents. You supply the agent runtimes and models; Paperclip provides the shared place to define work, assign responsibility, set budgets, request approvals and inspect activity. A VPS is the remote Linux computer on which you host the Paperclip service.

Those two layers solve different problems:

  • Paperclip: coordinates goals, tasks, roles, approvals, budgets, pauses, stops and audit history.
  • The VPS: supplies an always-available network location, persistent disk and operating system where the service can remain running.
  • Agent runtimes: execute model calls and tools when Paperclip or another configured trigger wakes them.

Paperclip can also run locally. A VPS becomes useful when you need the control plane reachable while your laptop is off, want several people or systems to access the same instance, or need a stable endpoint for scheduled work.

Do agents run continuously on a Paperclip VPS?

No. A VPS can keep the Paperclip service online continuously, but it does not make every agent execute continuously. Paperclip documentation states that “Agents wake for assigned work and follow-up messages.” Optional timer heartbeats and scheduled routines provide additional wake triggers. An agent run still depends on its configured runtime, credentials, schedule and available work.

What “always-on” actually means

  • Service availability: the web interface and orchestration service can remain reachable even when your personal computer is shut down.
  • Trigger availability: assigned tasks, follow-up messages, timers and schedules can be received at any time.
  • Execution availability: the relevant model or tool runtime must be configured, authenticated and able to run.

If a runtime is stopped, its credentials expire, or no trigger is configured, the VPS will not create work on its own. Describe the setup as “always available for configured runs,” rather than promising autonomous, nonstop execution.

Why use a VPS instead of running Paperclip locally?

A local installation is convenient for experimentation and keeps access private to your machine or network. A VPS trades some administration for persistence and remote reachability.

Deployment Best fit Advantages Trade-offs
Local instance Development, evaluation and private use Minimal hosting cost; local file storage and the project’s embedded PostgreSQL setup simplify a start Unavailable when the machine is off; remote access requires your own networking arrangement
Linux VPS Remote access, shared operations and scheduled work Persistent host, custom domain, HTTPS and login; independent of your personal computer You must maintain the server, updates, backups, credentials and network exposure

The official product material supports both local and remote deployment. The concrete remote path is a Linux VPS behind a custom domain, HTTPS and login.

What VPS resources does Paperclip need?

The installation guide says 1 vCPU and 2 GB of RAM are enough to get started on a VPS, with Ubuntu 22.04 or 24.04 used as reference distributions. This is a getting-started example, not a universal sizing promise. Concurrent agent work, database growth, logs, file storage and other services can require more.

How do I deploy Paperclip on a VPS?

Use the project’s current installation guide for the exact package and service commands. The reliable deployment sequence is the following.

  1. Choose a Linux VPS. Start with the documented 1-vCPU, 2-GB example only for a light initial workload. Record the provider, region, operating-system image and recovery options.
  2. Prepare a domain. Create a DNS record that points your chosen hostname to the VPS. A dedicated hostname makes certificate management and future migration clearer than exposing a raw address.
  3. Harden administrator access. Use key-based administration where available, keep the operating system updated, remove unused accounts and restrict management access to the networks and people that need it.
  4. Install the documented prerequisites. Follow the live Paperclip installation page for the supported Ubuntu release and package versions. Do not assume the source-development versions remain unchanged.
  5. Install Paperclip and configure persistent storage. Set the application’s production environment, database connection and file-storage location according to the current guide. Keep secrets outside source code and record how to restore them.
  6. Put HTTPS in front of the service. Configure the custom domain and a valid TLS certificate, then enable the documented login flow. Test both a normal browser session and an unauthenticated request so accidental public exposure is visible.
  7. Run a controlled test. Create a small task, assign it to one agent, send a follow-up and observe the activity record. Confirm that the expected runtime wakes, that outputs are stored and that a stop or pause takes effect.
  8. Document recovery. Write down the VPS rebuild process, database restore steps, domain changes, secret rotation procedure and the owner responsible for each one.

The installation guide names several mainstream cloud and VPS companies as examples, but those names are not a performance ranking or an endorsement. Compare current offers yourself using region, storage, backup options, network exposure, support and recovery controls.

How do Paperclip’s approvals, budgets and stop controls work?

Paperclip provides governance features for inspecting and directing agent work. You can define approval workflows, set budgets, pause or stop agents and review activity history. These controls make operations more accountable, but they are not an absolute guarantee against unwanted behavior or immediate spending.

Budget enforcement has timing limits

The project notes that budget enforcement uses recorded spend. Reporting can lag, and in-flight work may continue long enough to delay a stop. Set conservative budgets, keep provider-level spending alerts where available and review activity rather than relying on a single threshold.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use approvals for consequential actions

Require approval before an agent performs actions that alter production data, publish externally, create paid resources or grant access. Keep low-risk exploratory tasks less constrained so governance does not become an unnecessary bottleneck.

Pause before investigating

When output looks wrong, pause the affected agent or workflow, inspect its recent activity and identify whether the issue came from the prompt, tool permissions, runtime or schedule. Resume only after the cause and scope are understood.

What does Paperclip VPS hosting cost?

Your recurring cost has at least two components: the VPS and the agent usage itself. The Paperclip welcome guide gives an indicative $20–100+ per month range for agent usage, not a quote or a durable benchmark. Actual spend varies with the number of agents, how often they work, the model and provider, tool calls and the amount of work performed.

The VPS price is separate and depends on the provider, region, storage, backups and included bandwidth. Because current offers change, select a plan from the workload rather than treating the starter specification as a fixed-price package. Include database storage, snapshot or backup charges and any additional services in your estimate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How should I size a VPS for multiple agents?

Start with the documented baseline only when the workload is light and sequential. Size upward when you add concurrent runs, browser or build tools, large logs, a busy database, file-heavy tasks or other services on the same machine.

  • Measure concurrency: count how many runtimes can be active at once, not just how many agents exist.
  • Watch memory first: tool processes and databases can exhaust RAM before the Paperclip interface appears slow.
  • Separate critical services: move the database or resource-heavy workers to separate hosts when contention affects reliability.
  • Retain history deliberately: activity records and files consume storage; define retention and backup policies before the disk fills.
  • Load-test safely: use non-production tasks and low budgets to observe CPU, memory, storage and response times.

No independent performance benchmark or provider ranking establishes a universal agent count for the starter VPS. Capacity planning must follow your actual runtimes and schedules.

What security and reliability work does a VPS operator own?

Remote reachability increases responsibility. Protect the host and the control plane as separate layers.

  • Keep the Linux operating system, Paperclip installation and dependencies updated from trusted sources.
  • Use HTTPS for every remote session and protect domain and certificate renewal credentials.
  • Give each operator the least access needed; do not share administrator secrets in task text.
  • Store model and tool credentials in the platform’s supported secret mechanism, not in prompts, repositories or logs.
  • Back up the database and important files, then perform test restores. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a recovery plan.
  • Monitor disk space, memory, failed jobs, certificate expiry and unexpected login activity.
  • Keep a written stop procedure that includes pausing agents, revoking credentials and isolating the VPS.

A VPS provider’s uptime does not guarantee agent correctness, model availability or successful recovery. Reliability comes from layered backups, tested restores, monitored triggers and a documented rebuild process.

What can go wrong, and how do I troubleshoot it?

The Paperclip page is unreachable

Check the VPS status, DNS resolution, TLS certificate and the application service. If the host is healthy but the process stopped, inspect service logs and restart it using the method in the current installation guide.

An assigned task never runs

Confirm that the task is assigned, the agent is not paused, its runtime is authenticated and a follow-up or other configured trigger was actually created. A running VPS alone is not a wake signal.

Runs stop after a budget change

Review recorded spend and in-flight work. Enforcement can reflect reported usage with delay, so inspect activity history and provider billing rather than assuming the threshold was applied instantaneously.

The server runs out of memory or disk

Identify which runtime, database, log or file store is consuming resources. Reduce concurrency or retention, move heavy services, or resize the VPS before resuming unattended schedules.

Remote access is too broad

Restrict the network path, review user accounts, rotate exposed secrets and verify that HTTPS and login are enabled. Re-test from an untrusted network to ensure the instance is not accidentally open.

Is a VPS the right Paperclip deployment for you?

Choose a VPS when persistent remote access, shared operations or scheduled triggers justify server administration. Stay local when you are evaluating workflows, need private access and do not require the service while your computer is offline. In either case, Paperclip remains the governance layer; the deployment location does not change how agent triggers or runtimes behave.

For a first remote deployment, use the documented Ubuntu reference image, the 1-vCPU/2-GB starter example, a custom domain, HTTPS and login. Treat that configuration as a controlled starting point, then resize and separate services as measurements from your own workload demand it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I access a Paperclip VPS without buying a custom domain?

A private or temporary setup can use a local address or another controlled network path, but the documented remote installation path uses a custom domain with HTTPS and login. A domain also simplifies certificate renewal and makes it easier to move the service to a different host later.

Do I need to install Node.js and pnpm on a production VPS?

The current project quickstart lists Node.js 24.11 or newer and pnpm 9.15 or newer for source development. A packaged or otherwise documented production deployment may have different prerequisites, so follow the live installation instructions rather than assuming the development toolchain is required.

How often should I test Paperclip backups?

Test a restore after the first backup, after major upgrades and on a recurring schedule that matches how much work you can afford to lose. Verify that the restored database, stored files, domain configuration and secrets all work together, not just that a backup file exists.

Can Paperclip prevent every unexpected model action?

No control system can promise that. Approvals, budgets, pause or stop operations and activity records improve oversight, but recorded-spend enforcement and in-flight work can introduce delays; limit tool permissions and require human approval for consequential actions.
