Short answer: The Panasonic NR-CY54BGSAU remains appealing if you need a very large French-door refrigerator with flexible fresh-food storage, but it is no longer a normal new-appliance purchase. The unusual part is availability. Consumer NZ labels the model “Discontinued model” on a page last updated 22/03/2021. Panasonic’s archived specifications and operating instructions are useful for identifying a genuine unit, but they do not guarantee that every second-hand refrigerator still has its original shelves, bins, filter or warranty coverage. How large is the NR-CY54BGSAU, and will it fit your kitchen?

Measure the complete route, not only the kitchen gap

Freezer organization
The bottom freezer’s separate cases let you divide frozen food by type instead of stacking everything in one deep drawer. Ask the seller to open each case and show that it slides smoothly, closes squarely and has no cracked runners or warped fronts.
What does ECONAVI do, and how much electricity can it save?
ECONAVI combines door, light, room-temperature and internal-temperature sensors with inverter compressor control. The controller varies compressor speed rather than running at one fixed rate, allowing the refrigerator to respond to door openings and changing conditions.
Panasonic states that the ECONAVI-and-inverter combination can save up to 40% on electricity costs. That is a manufacturer claim, not an independently verified result in the accessible documentation. Actual consumption depends on room temperature, door-opening frequency, food load, temperature settings, ventilation and the condition of the door seals.
One refurbished listing recorded forecast energy consumption of 455 kWh and a three-star rating. Those figures belong to that listing’s example, not to every NR-CY54BGSAU, so inspect the energy label on the specific refrigerator you are considering. A missing or unreadable label is a reason to ask for a clear photograph before purchase.
How do Fresh Safe and the four temperature zones help with food?
Panasonic describes four zones: fruit and vegetables, meat and fish, freezing and general refrigeration. The Fresh Safe vegetable case is specified at approximately 6 °C and approximately 90% humidity, conditions intended to reduce drying of produce.
These are design specifications, not a promise that every used unit will hold those conditions. A blocked air path, damaged drawer seal, overloading or a weak compressor can change the result. After installation, allow the appliance to stabilize and use an independent thermometer to check the compartment behavior before relying on it for a large food load.
Inspect the vegetable-case lid, rails and humidity-related fittings carefully. A missing drawer or cracked cover can undermine the feature even if the compressor still runs. Ask whether the seller has stored the refrigerator upright and operating, or whether it has been disconnected for a long period.

What is Ag Clean, and should its antibacterial claim influence a used purchase?
Ag Clean is an installed filter in the cold-air outlet. Panasonic says the silver component has a powerful antibacterial effect and can deactivate 99.9% of mould and bacteria inside the refrigerator. The asterisk on that statement refers to Boken Quality Evaluation Institute test report No. 20215058561-1.
This is Panasonic’s stated test claim, not an independent guarantee of performance in a years-old appliance. The filter’s presence and condition matter: ask for a photograph, confirm it is installed in the cold-air outlet and find out whether a replacement is still sold in your market. Do not treat the feature as a substitute for cleaning, safe food temperatures or discarding spoiled food.
Are the shelves strong and easy to clean?
Panasonic says the tempered-glass shelves can bear up to 100 kg and can be removed for washing. The load figure is a product specification; it does not make a cracked shelf safe. Examine each panel under good light for chips, star cracks or edge damage, especially around shelf supports.
Remove and refit the shelves and bins during inspection. They should seat firmly without forcing, and the door bins should not sag or show stress marks. Check that shelf clips, drawer covers and freezer dividers are present. Missing accessories can be more troublesome than cosmetic dents because model-specific replacements may be unavailable after discontinuation.

Panasonic’s archived information states a 12-year warranty for the compressor, with the explicit qualification: “12 Year Warranty covers compressor part only.” The wording does not promise 12 years of complete-appliance coverage, labour, diagnosis, transport or other components.
Whether that historical promise transfers to a used or refurbished purchase is not established by the archive. Ask the seller or Panasonic’s local service organization for written confirmation using the refrigerator’s serial number. A receipt, original registration and proof of the original market may be required, and a third-party refurbisher may provide only its own limited warranty.
Get the warranty terms before paying. Confirm who pays labour and call-out charges, whether the warranty applies to a second owner, which country’s service network handles the claim and what happens if the compressor is no longer stocked. A verbal assurance is not equivalent to a transferable warranty document.

How much did the NR-CY54BGSAU cost, and is it still available?
Consumer NZ listed a price of NZ$3,799 when its record was updated on 22/03/2021. That is a historical New Zealand price, not a current recommended retail price.
A Grays refurbished listing described a 547 L unit with a three-month Grays-managed warranty, an RRP of A$2,499 as of October 2017 and an advertised price of A$749. The listing is now sold out. Its price and warranty illustrate how sharply old-stock and refurbished values can differ, but they should not be used as a live market quote.
Private listings may be lower or higher depending on cosmetic condition, delivery and included accessories. Compare the delivered cost, not only the headline price: transport, stairs, installation, disposal of your old appliance and a missing shelf can erase an apparent bargain.
