The Panasonic NR-CY54BGKAU is a spacious 547-litre-gross French-door refrigerator with inverter compression, ECONAVI sensing and non-frost cooling, but it is a discontinued model and should be bought only after careful condition, parts and warranty checks. Panasonic’s 2017 specifications rate it at 445 litres of usable storage, with a 346-litre refrigerator section and 99-litre freezer section. Its 770 mm width, 1,714 mm height and 743 mm depth make it a serious fitment project rather than a casual replacement. The design is attractive and feature-rich, yet the limited owner evidence, a 2.7/5 ProductReview.com.au score from five reviews and one report of control-card and LED trouble mean a used example needs inspection before money changes hands.
What is the Panasonic NR-CY54BGKAU?
The NR-CY54BGKAU is a black-glass, French-door refrigerator sold as part of Panasonic’s NR-CY54B family. Panasonic’s New Zealand product archive identifies the KAU model as a 547L inverter ECONAVI refrigerator. The family documentation dates the principal specifications to 2017, so listings that describe a new, current-generation appliance should be treated cautiously.

French doors place the refrigerator compartment across the upper section, while a pull-out freezer drawer sits below. That arrangement gives wide shelf space for platters and boxes, but it also requires enough room in front of the cabinet to pull out the freezer and enough side clearance for both doors to open without striking a wall or adjacent cabinet.
| Specification | Panasonic NR-CY54B family figure | What it means when shopping |
|---|---|---|
| Rated gross capacity | 547L | Total internal volume before shelves, bins and insulation reduce usable space. |
| Rated storage capacity | 445L | The more useful comparison figure for everyday groceries. |
| Refrigerator compartment | 394L gross; 346L storage | Most of the usable capacity is in the fresh-food section. |
| Freezer compartment | 153L gross; 99L storage | Storage is substantially lower than the headline freezer volume. |
| External size | 770W × 1,714H × 743D mm | Measure the route into the kitchen, not just the final cabinet opening. |
| Net weight | Approximately 89kg | Plan for two or more people and suitable moving equipment. |
| Refrigerant | R600a | Use a technician familiar with the refrigerant and the appliance’s service requirements. |
| Defrost system | Non-frost (automatic defrost) | There should not be a routine need to manually chip ice from the compartments. |
The 547L gross and 445L storage ratings are Panasonic Corporation figures from 2017. Capacity labels are not interchangeable: a retailer quoting 547L as “usable” is presenting the specification incorrectly.

How much usable storage does the NR-CY54BGKAU provide?
Expect 445 litres of rated storage, not 547 litres of shelf and drawer space. Panasonic allocates 346 litres of storage to the refrigerator compartment and 99 litres to the freezer. That split suits households that keep fresh produce, drinks and prepared food in the upper cabinet and use the freezer for ordinary weekly supplies rather than bulk frozen storage.
Refrigerator compartment
The family documentation describes adjustable glass shelves, vegetable storage, LED interior lighting and door storage. Adjustable shelves let you trade a shelf position for a tall bottle or jug, while the wide French-door opening can make large serving dishes easier to load than in a narrow single-door cabinet. Check every shelf for chips, bowed glass or missing supports on a second-hand unit; replacements may not be readily available.
Freezer compartment
The bottom drawer freezer is rated at 99 litres of storage. Drawer layouts are convenient for grouping packets but can hide small items beneath baskets, so inspect that runners move smoothly and that each basket is present. The documentation also lists quick-freezing functionality for the family, although the exact control layout should be confirmed on the KAU’s physical panel or manual.
Prime Fresh or chilled-case compartment
Related NR-CY54B variants are documented with either a Prime Fresh compartment or a chilled-case compartment. Those names are not proof that every KAU unit has the same insert or temperature range. Photograph the model label and control panel, then match them with the local manual before promising a buyer a specific compartment mode.
How do the inverter compressor and ECONAVI system work?
Panasonic describes INVERTER technology as working with ECONAVI: sensors detect and analyse usage information, then the control system adjusts compressor output and rotation speed. In principle, that allows the refrigerator to respond differently during heavy use, quiet periods and changes in ambient conditions instead of running a fixed-speed compressor at one operating pattern.

ECONAVI is therefore a control strategy, not a guarantee of a particular electricity bill. Actual consumption depends on room temperature, ventilation, door openings, food load, temperature settings, seal condition and the appliance’s age. No independent laboratory result for the exact NR-CY54BGKAU establishes annual energy use, noise, temperature uniformity or savings versus another refrigerator, so avoid treating the feature names as test results.
The family is specified as non-frost and uses R600a refrigerant. Keep ventilation paths clear and do not attempt sealed-system work yourself. R600a is flammable, so refrigerant leaks, compressor replacement and brazing belong to a qualified appliance technician using the correct safety procedure.
Will the NR-CY54BGKAU fit your kitchen?
Measure before arranging delivery. The cabinet is 770 mm wide, 1,714 mm high and 743 mm deep according to Panasonic’s 2017 specification. Those dimensions describe the appliance, not the additional space needed for door swing, ventilation, handles, packaging or the route through your home.
- Measure the final opening. Record the narrowest width, floor-to-ceiling height and usable depth. Compare each measurement with 770 mm, 1,714 mm and 743 mm rather than relying on a nominal “800 mm fridge space.”
- Measure the delivery route. Check the front door, security door, hallway turns, lift, stair landing and kitchen entrance. Include skirting boards, handrails and door stops that reduce the clear opening.
- Plan door clearance. Open both upper doors fully and confirm that handles do not hit a wall. Leave room in front for the freezer drawer to extend without colliding with an island or table.
- Allow ventilation space. Follow the clearance diagram in the exact local manual or on the rating plate. Do not push the cabinet tight against a wall because restricted airflow can increase running time and shorten component life.
- Check the floor. An approximately 89 kg appliance needs a level, sound surface. Verify that the refrigerator can be levelled and that the floor will not flex under its concentrated load.
Transport the appliance upright whenever possible and follow the seller’s or technician’s instructions about settling time before power-up. If the seller cannot provide the manual for the exact suffix, obtain it before installation rather than assuming every NR-CY54B variant uses identical clearances or controls.
Is the Panasonic NR-CY54BGKAU worth buying?
It can be worthwhile when you need a wide, high-capacity French-door layout and find a clean, fully working unit at a price that leaves room for repairs. It is not a low-risk purchase: the range is marked discontinued by ProductReview.com.au, independent performance testing for the exact model is not established, and replacement electronics may be difficult to source.

Reasons to consider it
- 445 litres of rated storage is substantial for a household that needs a large fresh-food compartment.
- The 346L refrigerator and 99L freezer split favours fresh groceries and everyday frozen food.
- Inverter control, ECONAVI sensing, automatic defrost, LED lighting and adjustable glass shelving provide useful everyday features.
- The French-door format offers a broad upper opening for trays, boxes and wide dishes.
Reasons to be cautious
- Discontinued status can make model-specific parts, control boards and trim harder to obtain.
- The only cited owner-rating snapshot is 2.7/5 from five ProductReview.com.au reviews, a very small sample that cannot establish a failure rate.
- Warranty terms vary by country, seller and suffix, especially for a used appliance.
- No exact-model independent laboratory data confirms noise, energy consumption or temperature stability.
The sensible verdict is conditional: buy on verified condition and support, not on the Panasonic badge or the 547L headline alone. A newer refrigerator with documented parts support may be the safer choice if the price difference is modest or if downtime would be costly.
What problems have owners reported?
ProductReview.com.au lists the NR-CY54BG range as discontinued and records five reviews averaging 2.7 out of 5. One owner says the twin LED lights repeatedly switched off; a service visit reportedly diagnosed a faulty control card, and the owner also described difficulty obtaining parts. That is an individual account, not a controlled reliability study, but it identifies a repair risk worth checking before purchase.
LED and control symptoms to check
- Open each door several times and verify that every interior LED zone illuminates immediately and stays on.
- Operate the control panel, temperature adjustments, alarm indicators and quick-freezing function, if fitted.
- Listen for repeated clicking, unexplained resets or displays that go blank after the compressor starts.
- Ask whether any control board, LED module, wiring harness or door switch has been replaced, and request invoices if the seller claims a repair.
If an LED fails, do not assume the lamp alone is the problem. The reported case involved a diagnosis of a control card, so a technician should test the circuit and board before parts are ordered. Obtain a written availability and price check for the suspected component; a refrigerator that is cheap to buy can become uneconomic if a discontinued board has to be imported or cannot be found.
Other condition checks
Inspect door gaskets for gaps, tears and flattening. Confirm that doors close under their own seal pressure, drawers glide without binding and shelves are not cracked. Look for water under the cabinet, heavy frost in a supposedly non-frost compartment, unusual heat around the cabinet sides or a compressor that runs continuously. These observations do not identify a fault by themselves, but they justify a qualified inspection before purchase.

There is no single warranty that can safely be assumed from the model number. Panasonic Australia states 24 months for inverter-model home appliances, while a Panasonic New Zealand page for a related NR-CY54BGSAU variant refers to a 12-year warranty covering the compressor part only. The latter does not mean the whole refrigerator, labour or other components are covered for 12 years, and neither statement proves coverage for every KAU sale.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
For a new-old-stock or used unit, ask for the original invoice, the selling country, the exact suffix on the rating plate and the written terms that applied to that sale. Confirm whether the warranty transfers to a second owner, whether labour and call-out fees are included, and whether a discontinued model is still supported. If the seller cannot document coverage, price the refrigerator as out of warranty.
How should you inspect a used NR-CY54BGKAU before paying?
Use a short, repeatable inspection rather than relying on a powered-on demonstration alone. A refrigerator may appear cold while hiding a failing board, weak seal or intermittent light fault.
- Verify identity. Photograph the rating plate and confirm it says NR-CY54BGKAU, not a similar SAU, WAU or another suffix.
- Confirm dimensions. Recheck the 770 mm width, 1,714 mm height and 743 mm depth against your measured route and final opening.
- Review paperwork. Request the invoice, manuals, service records and any parts receipts. A vague verbal assurance is not warranty evidence.
- Inspect the cabinet. Look for corrosion, dents near hinges, cracked glass, damaged drawer fronts and missing shelf clips.
- Test the seals and doors. Close each door on a sheet of paper; resistance as you pull is a basic indication that the gasket is contacting the cabinet. Repeat around corners, but treat this only as a screening check.
- Test every electrical function. Check both LED zones, display buttons, alarms, temperature controls and any quick-freeze or fresh-case setting fitted to that unit.
- Observe operation. Let the unit run long enough to confirm that the compressor starts, the interior cools and no alarm or fault code appears. A technician’s temperature check is preferable when the purchase is expensive.
- Ask about parts. Before committing, contact an authorised or reputable appliance service provider with the exact model and ask whether control cards, LED modules, seals, shelves and drawer components can still be sourced.
- Agree on return terms. Put any cooling test, delivery damage responsibility and return period in writing.
How does it compare with alternative refrigerators?
Compare the NR-CY54BGKAU with current or used alternatives using measurable ownership factors rather than feature-name marketing. The following framework prevents the gross-capacity figure from deciding the purchase by itself.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

|---|---|---|
| Usable storage | 445L total; 346L refrigerator; 99L freezer | Storage figures reveal whether the layout suits your shopping pattern. |
| Footprint | 770W × 1,714H × 743D mm, plus clearance | A nominally similar refrigerator may fit better or worse once doors and ventilation are included. |
| Layout | French doors with bottom drawer freezer | Choose based on shelf width, drawer access and the space in front of the appliance. |
| Efficiency hardware | Inverter and ECONAVI are documented for the family | Useful design features, but not a substitute for measured energy data. |
| Warranty | Confirm market-specific written terms | Compressor-only cover is materially different from whole-appliance cover. |
| Parts and service | Check control boards, LEDs, seals, shelves and drawers before buying | Discontinued status can turn a minor fault into a long or expensive repair. |
| Total delivered cost | Include transport, installation, inspection and likely repairs | A low purchase price may not be the lowest cost over the appliance’s remaining life. |
Do not rank alternatives by unsupported claims about quietness or annual energy use. Ask for the relevant energy label or independent measurement for each specific model and market, then compare like-for-like conditions.
How do you maintain this Panasonic refrigerator?
Keep the condenser and ventilation areas clear according to the local manual, wipe spills promptly and avoid packing food against air outlets. Check the door gaskets periodically, keep drawers from obstructing closure and leave enough space for air to circulate around stored food. Because the unit is non-frost, persistent ice buildup is a reason to investigate rather than a normal maintenance task.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
When cleaning, disconnect power if the manual requires it and use products safe for the cabinet, glass and seals. Never puncture an interior panel, attempt to recover R600a or bypass a door switch. If cooling falls, a fault code appears, lights fail repeatedly or the compressor runs without reaching temperature, record the symptom and model suffix before calling service.
Who should buy the NR-CY54BGKAU?
This refrigerator fits a buyer who values a broad fresh-food compartment, wants French-door access and can verify a used appliance in person. It is most defensible when the cabinet, seals, lights, controls and cooling all pass inspection and a service provider confirms that likely replacement parts remain obtainable.
Skip it when you need guaranteed long-term parts support, a transferable full-appliance warranty, measured efficiency data or a refrigerator that must fit a tightly constrained opening without additional clearance. In those cases, a current model with published local support can justify a higher upfront price.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the NR-CY54BGKAU still manufactured?
The NR-CY54BG range is marked discontinued by ProductReview.com.au. Marketplace listings may therefore represent old stock or used appliances; ask for the rating-plate photo and the appliance’s sale and service history before assuming it is new.
Can the freezer capacity be treated as 153 litres?
153 litres is the family’s gross freezer volume, while Panasonic lists 99 litres of freezer storage. Use the 99-litre figure when deciding whether it can hold your normal frozen-food load.
What should I do if the interior lights go out?
Check whether both LED zones fail together and whether the display or door alarms also behave abnormally, then stop repeatedly cycling the power. Because an owner report involved a diagnosed control-card fault, have a technician test the board, wiring and door switches before ordering LED parts.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAre replacement shelves and electronic boards guaranteed to be available?
No. The model’s discontinued status and an owner’s report of parts difficulty make availability uncertain. Obtain a written parts check using the exact NR-CY54BGKAU suffix before buying, especially for control cards, LED modules and drawer hardware.
