The Panasonic NR-BY552XSAU is a roomy 554-litre, two-door bottom-mount refrigerator that makes the most sense as a carefully checked used appliance, not as a current new-product purchase. Panasonic’s Australian brochure specifies a 400-litre refrigerator section, 154-litre freezer, inverter motor, frost-free operation and 463 kWh/year consumption under the Australian rating system. Owner feedback is mixed: 92 ProductReview.com.au reviews average 3.7/5, with internal layout scoring 4.0/5 but noise only 3.0/5. One owner reported that the refrigerator compartment could not stay below 10°C during hot, humid weather in Far North Queensland, although that is a single field report rather than a controlled test. The model is discontinued, so measured cooling, seal condition, parts access and the seller’s return terms matter more than the feature list.
What are the Panasonic NR-BY552XSAU’s key specifications?
This is a large Australian-market refrigerator with a bottom freezer and a relatively wide, deep cabinet. The published capacities are nominal compartment volumes; usable space will be lower after shelves, drawers and door bins are installed.

| Specification | Published information | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Total capacity | 554 L | Panasonic Australia brochure, 2012 |
| Refrigerator compartment | 400 L | Panasonic Australia brochure, 2012 |
| Freezer compartment | 154 L | Panasonic Australia brochure, 2012 |
| External dimensions | 775 mm wide × 745 mm deep × 1,714 mm high | Check door swing, handles and ventilation clearance at the installation site |
| Configuration | Two-door, bottom-mount freezer | Australian-market model |
| Refrigerant | R600a | Service must be performed with equipment and procedures suitable for R600a |
| Defrost system | Frost free | Automatic defrost is part of the published specification |
| Energy label | Three stars; 463 kWh/year | Australian label information from Panasonic’s 2012 brochure, not a current US Energy Star result |
At 775 mm wide, this is not a narrow replacement for a standard small refrigerator. Measure the entire delivery route, including lifts, stairwells, corners and the final door opening. The 745 mm cabinet depth can become substantially greater when the door is open, so confirm that users can stand in front of the drawers and that the doors will clear adjacent walls or cabinetry.
How is the interior arranged?
The model’s layout is one of its stronger points in owner feedback. ProductReview.com.au gives internal layout 4.0/5, above the overall 3.7/5 average. Panasonic’s listed equipment is aimed at separating everyday food, drinks and produce rather than maximizing freezer volume.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Refrigerator section
- Adjustable shelves allow the main compartment to be configured around tall containers.
- Large bottle bins use the door space for drinks and condiments.
- A chilled case provides a colder area for items that benefit from lower storage temperatures.
- The VitaminSafe compartment is intended for produce storage.
- LED lighting, surround cooling and Ag Clean antibacterial and deodorising functions are included in the published feature set.
Freezer section
- The 154-litre freezer uses drawers rather than a top-mounted compartment.
- A twist ice tray is listed as standard equipment.
- A quick-freezing function is provided for situations in which newly added food needs to freeze faster.
These features describe what Panasonic fitted to the model; they do not prove a particular food-safety result or quantify how much longer produce lasts. On a used unit, inspect every shelf, drawer front, runner and bin for cracks because replacements may be harder to source than door gaskets.
Does it cool reliably in hot, humid weather?
The available evidence is not strong enough to call the NR-BY552XSAU reliable or unreliable in every climate. One ProductReview.com.au owner in Far North Queensland wrote that the refrigerator side could not get below 10°C on hot, humid days and that the left exterior side was often hot to touch. That is an important warning for buyers in tropical conditions, but it is one uncontrolled report, not a laboratory measurement or a failure-rate statistic.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPanasonic’s brochure lists inverter control, ECONAVI and surround cooling, yet those features do not establish actual temperature stability in a particular kitchen. No independent laboratory performance figure or current standardized test result was identified for this model. Ambient temperature, ventilation, door-opening frequency, condenser cleanliness, door-seal condition and refrigerant-system health can all affect a used refrigerator.
How to test a used unit before paying
- Ask the seller to leave the refrigerator powered and closed long enough to reach its normal operating state. A recently switched-on appliance can appear cold while the cabinet and food load are still warming.
- Place a calibrated refrigerator thermometer in the center of the main compartment and separate thermometers in a freezer drawer if available. Record readings at the start and again after several hours with the doors kept closed.
- Repeat the check after opening the doors normally, because a unit that recovers slowly may struggle in a busy household.
- Inspect whether the cabinet is packed against a wall or heat source. Restricted airflow can make a healthy refrigerator perform poorly.
- Reject the appliance if the measured temperature is unsafe for your intended food storage, if it fluctuates sharply, or if the seller will not permit a meaningful test.
Do not treat a cold freezer as proof that the refrigerator section is healthy. The owner report specifically concerns the refrigerator side, and separate airflow or sensor problems can leave one compartment warm while another still freezes.
How noisy is the NR-BY552XSAU?
Noise satisfaction is weaker than layout satisfaction. ProductReview.com.au records a 3.0/5 noise score from its review set, compared with 4.0/5 for internal layout and 3.7/5 overall. The score indicates inconsistent owner experience, but it is not a decibel measurement and does not identify a single normal operating level.

An inverter compressor can change speed rather than simply switching between full output and off, and frost-free appliances also run fans and periodic defrost cycles. Consequently, a used unit may produce several different sounds: a low compressor hum, fan noise, brief clicks from controls, or changes during defrost. The useful question is whether the sound is intrusive, persistent or accompanied by poor cooling.

Noise checks at inspection
- Listen with the doors closed for at least several minutes, then listen again after opening and closing a door.
- Check for rattling shelves, vibrating panels or a cabinet touching the wall; those noises may be installation-related rather than compressor faults.
- Ask whether the sound changes dramatically during the day. A recurring loud buzz, scraping fan or repeated clicking deserves professional diagnosis.
- Stand beside the refrigerator and at the nearest sleeping or living area. A sound acceptable in a garage may be objectionable in an open-plan kitchen.
What do the inverter, ECONAVI and other features actually mean?
Panasonic lists an inverter motor and ECONAVI energy-control system. In broad terms, an inverter compressor can vary its operating speed, while a control system can adjust operation according to sensed conditions. The brochure does not provide a measured noise figure, a guaranteed annual bill, or a test showing how much either feature saves in a particular home.
Ag Clean antibacterial and deodorising functions, VitaminSafe, chilled storage, surround cooling and LED lighting are convenience and storage features. Their presence can make the cabinet easier to organize, but they are not substitutes for safe temperatures, a clean interior and an intact door seal. The quick-freezing mode may increase power use while active; Panasonic’s published 463 kWh/year figure should not be interpreted as if quick-freezing were run continuously.
How efficient is it, and can the energy figure be compared with a modern refrigerator?
The Australian brochure lists a three-star rating and 463 kWh/year for the NR-BY552XSAU. Those numbers are tied to the Australian labeling method and the 2012 brochure. They are useful for identifying the model’s published consumption, but they are not a current US Energy Star claim and should not be compared directly with a newer appliance without checking the same jurisdiction’s test standard and label year.
Actual consumption depends on room temperature, ventilation, thermostat settings, door openings, food load, frost-free cycles and component condition. A dusty condenser area, damaged gasket or weak compressor can push a used refrigerator well above its original test result. If running cost is decisive, measure electricity use with a plug-in energy meter over a representative period rather than relying solely on the old label.

What does owner feedback say overall?
ProductReview.com.au marks the silver NR-BY552XSAU as discontinued and shows 92 reviews averaging 3.7/5. The detail matters: internal layout is rated 4.0/5, while noise is rated 3.0/5. This pattern suggests that owners generally found the space and organization useful, but were less consistent about acoustic behavior.
Review pages are self-selected and combine different homes, climates, ages and maintenance histories. They can reveal recurring concerns to investigate, but they cannot establish a failure rate, average service life or a controlled cooling result. The hot-and-humid complaint should therefore trigger a temperature test, not an assumption that every unit will fail in tropical weather.
How much did it cost, and what is a sensible used price?
There is no verified current US new-product price in the available evidence. Grays Australia’s archived listing records an A$2,199 recommended retail price for a new product in August 2016 and an A$999 refurbished listing. That listing is sold out and required an Australian shipping address, so neither figure is a current market quote or a guarantee of what an individual seller should charge.
| Price information | Amount | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Historical recommended retail price | A$2,199 | New product, Grays Australia listing from August 2016 |
| Archived refurbished listing | A$999 | Listing was sold out; Australian shipping address required |
For a discontinued appliance, condition and risk should determine the offer more than an old RRP. A clean cabinet with stable measured temperatures, quiet operation, complete drawers and a written return period is worth more than a cheaper unit that cannot be tested. Budget separately for transport, door removal, installation and any immediate gasket or control repair.

These are Australian supplier listings, not proof that every internal component remains available. Before buying a used unit, photograph the model plate and ask a supplier or technician to confirm the exact part number. A gasket is a relatively defined repair; electronic boards, fans, sensors and compressor work may be more difficult or uneconomic on a discontinued refrigerator.
What should I inspect before buying a used one?
Use a written inspection rather than judging the refrigerator by appearance alone. The following sequence focuses on faults that can turn a low purchase price into an expensive appliance.
- Verify identity. Photograph the model and serial labels and make sure the cabinet is actually an NR-BY552XSAU, not a visually similar Panasonic model.
- Check dimensions and access. Confirm 775 mm width, 745 mm depth and 1,714 mm height against the kitchen, delivery route and required clearance.
- Measure both compartments. Use thermometers and allow enough powered-on time for a meaningful reading. Check recovery after normal door opening.
- Inspect door seals. Look for splits, hardening, gaps and sections that pull away from the cabinet. A weak seal causes warm spots and extra compressor run time.
- Examine drawers and shelves. Slide every drawer, test each adjustment and look for cracked plastic, missing stops and broken bottle bins.
- Listen and feel. Identify compressor, fan and vibration sounds. A warm side panel can occur during heat rejection, but excessive heat together with poor cooling is a reason to stop.
- Check the freezer and ice system. Look for heavy frost, water damage, a jammed twist tray or drawers that do not close fully.
- Ask about history. Request service invoices, relocation details and the reason for sale. Treat vague answers as a risk factor rather than proof of a fault.
- Confirm service access. Find a local technician familiar with R600a systems and verify that transport, installation and disposal are available in your area.
- Get terms in writing. A short return window is especially valuable when the appliance has not been tested under your household’s climate and load.
Is it a good choice for a hot climate?
Only if the individual refrigerator demonstrates stable temperatures in that climate. The Far North Queensland report is a credible reason to be cautious, but it does not predict every unit’s behavior. Tropical buyers should prioritize a supervised temperature test, adequate ventilation and a seller willing to stand behind the appliance over cosmetic condition or the feature list.

A refrigerator that has spent years in a hot room may have greater wear on seals, fans and the cooling system. Ask to test it during the warmest practical part of the day and avoid placing it beside an oven, in direct sun or in an enclosed cabinet without airflow.
How should it be compared with another refrigerator?
Compare the NR-BY552XSAU on the same evidence, not on brand reputation or isolated features. A newer, smaller refrigerator may use less electricity, while a similarly sized used model may offer better parts support or a documented service history.

What are the main advantages and drawbacks?
Advantages
- Large 554-litre nominal capacity with a useful 400-litre refrigerator section.
- Bottom-mount freezer and drawer organization that owners generally rate well for layout.
- Published inverter, ECONAVI, frost-free, LED, chilled-case and quick-freezing features.
- Documented model-specific refrigerator and freezer gasket listings in Australia.
- Fingerprint-resistant finish and adjustable storage aimed at everyday convenience.
Drawbacks and risks
- Discontinued status limits the certainty of future parts and service support.
- Owner noise satisfaction is only 3.0/5, with no independent decibel figure available.
- A field report describes refrigerator temperatures above 10°C in hot, humid conditions.
- The three-star, 463 kWh/year figure is an older Australian specification, not a current US efficiency certification.
- Its 775 mm width and 745 mm depth can make delivery and kitchen integration difficult.
- Historical prices cannot establish what a used unit is worth today.
Who should buy the NR-BY552XSAU?
It is most suitable for a buyer who needs substantial refrigerator capacity, can test a specific used unit, has local appliance service and is comfortable owning a discontinued model. The decision is strongest when the refrigerator reaches safe temperatures, runs without objectionable noise, has intact storage parts and is priced with repair risk included.
Pass on it when the seller refuses a cooling test, the refrigerator side remains warm, seals are visibly damaged, drawers are missing, or no technician can service an R600a appliance locally. Those conditions matter more than Panasonic’s original feature list.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Panasonic NR-BY552XSAU still being manufactured?
ProductReview.com.au marks the silver NR-BY552XSAU as discontinued. The available evidence does not establish a current production run or a verified new-product supply channel, so listings described as new should be checked carefully for age, warranty and actual stock location.
Does a warm exterior side mean this refrigerator is defective?
Not by itself: refrigerator cabinets reject heat, so some exterior warmth can occur during operation. Warmth combined with poor compartment temperatures, nonstop running or unusual noise warrants a technician’s inspection rather than a quick judgment from touch alone.
Are the listed gasket prices guaranteed?
No. The refrigerator and freezer gasket amounts are supplier listings observed in Australia, and both suppliers state or imply that dispatch, inventory and pricing can change. Confirm the model, part number, GST treatment and delivery charge immediately before ordering.
Can the 463 kWh/year figure predict my electricity bill?
No. It is a published Australian label value from Panasonic’s 2012 brochure, measured under that labeling framework. Your bill depends on local electricity rates, room temperature, ventilation, door use, settings and the condition of the used appliance.
