The Panasonic NR-BX46BVWAU can still make sense as a large, bottom-freezer refrigerator only when you find a clean, correctly identified unit at a suitably low price and confirm service and parts support first. It is not a current Panasonic model: both CHOICE and Consumer NZ list it as discontinued. Its published specification remains useful for judging capacity, kitchen fit and running-cost expectations, but the public record does not expose enough independent test data to call it a top performer for temperature stability, noise or reliability. Treat any listing as an older appliance purchase rather than a normal new-model recommendation.
This guide explains the documented specification, what the 2016-era testing record does and does not prove, how to check a used or old-stock refrigerator, and when walking away is the safer decision.

What is the Panasonic NR-BX46BVWAU?
The NR-BX46BVWAU is a white-metal BX Series refrigerator with the freezer at the bottom. Panasonic positioned it as a family-sized model in the roughly 450-litre class, with an upper fresh-food compartment and a pull-out freezer drawer below. CHOICE classifies it as a medium (381–450 L) freezer-on-bottom refrigerator and records 447 litres of total volume.
The model is associated with Panasonic Australia’s BX Series launch material from 2016. The original launch price was about AUD $1,799, while Consumer NZ records $1,798. Those are historical list prices, not a statement of what a discontinued unit should cost today.

Capacity numbers are nominal compartment volumes. They do not tell you how much space remains after shelves, bins, the ice-making arrangement (if fitted), packaging and the clearance needed around stored food. For a real purchase, inspect the interior layout rather than comparing litres alone.
Is the NR-BX46BVWAU still worth buying?
It is worth considering only when the price reflects its age and you can verify working condition, ownership history and support. For most shoppers choosing a refrigerator as a primary appliance, a current model with a valid local warranty and confirmed parts pipeline is the lower-risk option.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhen an older unit can be rational
- You need a bottom-freezer layout and the refrigerator fits a constrained kitchen better than currently available alternatives.
- The seller permits a proper inspection, including temperature checks after the compressor has cycled and examination of seals, drawers and shelves.
- You receive the model and serial information and can obtain a service or parts answer from Panasonic or an authorised technician before paying.
- The purchase price leaves room for delivery, installation, a replacement seal or other age-related repairs.
When to decline it
- The listing calls it “new” but cannot provide a dated invoice, serial plate photograph or a written warranty that applies in your country.
- The seller refuses a powered inspection, the cabinet has severe corrosion, or the freezer shows heavy uncontrolled ice build-up.
- The unit is priced close to a current refrigerator with a full warranty. Historical RRP is not a reason to pay a premium now.
- You cannot establish whether shelves, drawer fronts, electronic boards or door seals are still obtainable.
Because CHOICE and Consumer NZ classify the model as discontinued, scarcity should not be confused with collectable value. A rare listing is still an old refrigeration appliance with potentially expensive sealed-system or electronics work.
Is the Panasonic NR-BX46BVWAU discontinued?
Yes. CHOICE and Consumer NZ both mark the NR-BX46BVWAU as discontinued. That status means Panasonic and retailers may no longer maintain normal stock, and it can make an exact replacement part, matching door component or control board harder to source.
Discontinued does not automatically mean unsafe or unusable. It does mean that availability, warranty handling and repair economics must be checked for the individual unit. A retailer may have old stock, a private seller may offer a used refrigerator, or a service company may have reclaimed parts; none of those possibilities establishes current stock or compatibility.
What discontinued status changes for a buyer
- Price: there is no dependable current list price against which to judge a used offer. Compare the complete cost with current alternatives, including transport and likely repairs.
- Support: ask for a written answer on whether the exact model and serial number are supported in your region.
- Returns: clarify the seller’s return window before delivery. A refrigerator that powers on briefly may still fail to hold safe temperatures.
- Parts: do not assume a newer BX model, a similar Panasonic model or a generic drawer is interchangeable.
How large is the NR-BX46BVWAU, and will it fit?
The cabinet is listed at 176 cm high, 69 cm wide and 70 cm deep. The recommended installation envelope is approximately 206 cm high, 79 cm wide and 80 cm deep. Use the larger envelope when planning the cavity; the cabinet dimensions alone are not a safe fit test.

Measure the complete delivery path
- Measure the front door opening, security door, hallway turns, lift or stair route, and the final kitchen opening. Record the narrowest point, not the average width.
- Check ceiling height at the installation position and at any point where the appliance must be tilted. The recommended height is substantially greater than the cabinet height.
- Measure skirting boards, benchtop overhangs, island corners and door frames that could reduce the usable depth or turning radius.
- Ask the seller or delivery company whether the doors can be removed and reinstalled, and whether that procedure is authorised for this model.
- Plan for ventilation and door operation inside the recommended installation space. Do not push the cabinet tightly against a wall simply because the cabinet itself fits.
The published dimensions do not specify door-swing angles, hinge-side clearance, levelling-foot adjustment or the minimum rear gap. Obtain the installation instructions or a Panasonic service answer for those details rather than guessing from photographs.

What storage and cooling features does it have?
BX Series documentation lists an inverter compressor system, ECONAVI controls, a chilled case, a vegetable case, Ag Clean antibacterial and deodorising treatment, and a full-extension bottom freezer drawer. These describe the equipment and marketing claims; they are not independent proof that food will last longer in every kitchen.
Inverter and ECONAVI
An inverter compressor is designed to vary its operating speed instead of relying only on simple full-power starts and stops. ECONAVI is Panasonic’s sensor-and-control branding for adapting operation to usage conditions. The practical result depends on ambient temperature, loading, door openings, installation ventilation and the condition of the appliance after years of use.
Chilled and vegetable cases
A chilled case is intended for foods that benefit from a colder storage zone than the main refrigerator, while a vegetable case provides a dedicated produce area. Check that each drawer slides smoothly, closes fully and has no cracked runners or warped fronts. A broken drawer can be disproportionately expensive if an exact replacement is unavailable.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Ag Clean treatment
Ag Clean is described as an antibacterial and deodorising treatment. Treat it as a maintenance feature, not as permission to store food beyond safe dates or to skip cleaning. Odours can also indicate blocked drainage, spoiled food beneath a drawer or a failing temperature-control system.
Full-extension bottom freezer
The drawer layout puts frequently used refrigerator food at eye level and allows the freezer to be pulled out for access. During inspection, load the drawer with gentle pressure and check that both sides remain aligned through the full travel. Grinding, binding or a drawer that drops at the end of its travel suggests wear that should be priced before purchase.
What do independent tests actually show?
CHOICE records testing from 2016, but the public listing places the expert rating and detailed results behind member access. The visible record identifies categories including temperature stability, temperature evenness, temperature range, response to outside temperature, default-setting performance, noise, reliability and owner satisfaction; it does not publish the numerical scores for those categories.
Consequently, there is no responsible basis in the accessible record for calling this model especially quiet, unusually stable or exceptionally reliable. Do not copy a score from a retailer summary or another model’s page and attribute it to the NR-BX46BVWAU.

What you can test yourself
- Use a calibrated refrigerator thermometer in the main compartment and freezer after the appliance has been running undisturbed. Record readings over several hours rather than relying on the display or a single instant.
- Listen during compressor starts, fan operation and defrost. Occasional clicks and changes in pitch can be normal, but scraping, rattling or repeated unsuccessful starts require service assessment.
- Inspect the door gasket for splits, flattened corners or sections that do not grip a sheet of paper evenly.
- Look for water under crisper drawers, excessive frost, warm spots and condensation around the cabinet. These symptoms have several possible causes and should not be diagnosed from appearance alone.
How much electricity does it use?
The published figure is 370 kWh per year with a 3.5-star rating. That is the useful benchmark for comparing labels, but actual consumption varies with room temperature, ventilation, thermostat setting, door openings, food load, gasket condition and component ageing.
Use the figure as an annual energy quantity, not as a promised bill. To estimate your own cost, multiply the annual kilowatt-hours by the electricity rate on your bill and then add any fixed charges only if you are comparing whole-house bills. A refrigerator’s measured use can exceed the label figure when installed in a hot room or operated with poor airflow.
Ways an older unit can consume more
- A compressed or torn gasket allows warm air to enter continuously.
- Dust around accessible condenser areas, where the design permits cleaning, can reduce heat rejection.
- Insufficient clearance traps heat behind or above the cabinet.
- Frequent door openings, uncovered hot food and a heavily iced freezer increase the cooling load.
- A tired fan, sensor, defrost heater or compressor can keep the appliance running longer than intended.
Do not treat the star rating as a modern performance guarantee. It is the rating published for the model’s period and jurisdiction; compare current labels using the same local labelling system before drawing a direct conclusion.
Can you still find replacement parts and service?
Possibly, but availability must be confirmed for the exact NR-BX46BVWAU and serial number. The model’s discontinued status means that a compatible part may be old stock, supplied through an authorised service channel, or unavailable. A photograph showing that another refrigerator looks similar is not compatibility evidence.
Ask for these details before purchase
- The complete model code, including every suffix, from the rating plate inside or on the cabinet.
- The serial number and country of sale.
- The part number for the item you need, not just a description such as “freezer drawer” or “crisper shelf.”
- Whether the part is new, used, refurbished or a substitute, and whether it carries its own warranty.
- The installed cost and expected lead time, especially for electronic controls or sealed-system work.
Contact Panasonic Australia or an authorised local service provider with those details. If the answer is “not available,” ask whether a technically approved substitute exists; do not modify a safety-critical component or force a non-matching shelf, hinge or electrical part into place.
What should you inspect when buying a used or old-stock unit?
A careful inspection is more valuable than a seller’s claim that the refrigerator is “working.” Refrigeration faults can take hours to appear, so arrange enough powered-running time to observe temperatures and cycling.
Exterior and cabinet
- Check all sides for rust, impact damage, cabinet bulges and water staining. Damage near a door hinge or refrigerant line deserves specialist attention.
- Confirm that both doors and the freezer drawer sit squarely and do not require lifting to close.
- Inspect handles, shelves, bins and drawer fronts for cracks or missing retainers.
Cooling behaviour
- Start with the appliance at room temperature if possible, then allow it to run long enough for temperatures to settle.
- Measure the refrigerator and freezer with a thermometer. Compare results over time, not just immediately after switching on.
- Check for excessive frost, water pooling, warm corners or food that has partially thawed and refrozen.
Electrical and operating checks
- Verify that interior lights, controls, fans, alarms and any displayed temperature indicators respond normally.
- Listen for repeated clicking, buzzing, grinding or a compressor that starts and stops unusually quickly.
- Look at the power cord and plug for heat damage, cuts or improvised repairs. Do not buy an appliance with unsafe wiring.
Documentation
- Photograph the rating plate, purchase invoice and any service reports.
- Ask why the appliance is being sold and how it was transported or stored.
- Get the return, delivery-damage and warranty terms in writing before payment.
How should it be transported and installed?
Use the manufacturer’s installation instructions whenever available. The cabinet should be moved with suitable appliance equipment, protected from impact, and positioned so the specified ventilation space is preserved. Ask the delivery team how long the unit must remain upright after transport; the correct waiting period depends on how it was moved and the manufacturer’s instructions.

How does it compare with a current refrigerator?
Compare the NR-BX46BVWAU with a current model on total ownership cost, not on litre capacity or historical RRP alone. The table below shows the questions to ask; it does not claim a result for any unspecified modern model.
| Comparison area | NR-BX46BVWAU evidence | What to verify on a current alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity | 447 L total, with CHOICE-listed 313 L refrigerator and 134 L freezer compartments | Usable shelf and drawer space, not only the headline total |
| Fit | 176 × 69 × 70 cm cabinet; approximately 206 × 79 × 80 cm recommended space | Cabinet, hinge-side clearance, ventilation and delivery dimensions |
| Energy | 370 kWh/year claimed; 3.5 stars | Current local energy label and the test conditions behind it |
| Layout | Bottom freezer drawer, chilled and vegetable cases | Drawer access, shelf adjustment, ice storage and door-bin layout |
| Controls | Inverter and ECONAVI technologies documented for the BX Series | Control reliability, serviceability and availability of replacement electronics |
| Testing | 2016 CHOICE testing is recorded, but public scores are restricted | Independent temperature, noise and reliability evidence that is actually visible |
| Warranty | Two years listed by CHOICE; Panasonic Australia currently lists 24 months for eligible inverter home appliances subject to terms | Written coverage, exclusions, labour, transport and transfer rules |
| Support | Model is marked discontinued by CHOICE and Consumer NZ | Whether the manufacturer still lists the model and stocks key parts |
| Total cost | Historical launch price about AUD $1,799, not a current valuation | Purchase, delivery, installation, electricity and plausible repair costs |
A current refrigerator may cost more upfront but still be cheaper over its useful life if it includes dependable parts access and a meaningful warranty. Conversely, a verified, well-maintained NR-BX46BVWAU at a low price may suit a buyer who accepts discontinued-model risk.
What warranty protection applies?
CHOICE lists a two-year warranty for the model. Panasonic Australia’s current warranty information states 24 months for inverter home-appliance categories, subject to the published terms and eligibility. That category statement should not be treated as proof that every second-hand or imported NR-BX46BVWAU receives the same coverage.
Ask the seller which country supplied the appliance, whether the original invoice is available, who performs warranty service and whether the warranty can be transferred. For an old-stock unit, confirm the warranty start date and whether the retailer or manufacturer is responsible. For a used unit, obtain the answer in writing; do not rely on an assumption that the original owner’s rights automatically follow the appliance.
What problems are most important to troubleshoot?
Start with symptoms and safe checks, then stop and call a qualified technician when the cause could involve refrigerant, mains electricity or a sealed system.
The refrigerator is warm
Check that power is present, doors close fully, vents are not blocked by food and the cabinet has the recommended airflow. If the compressor runs continuously, the freezer is heavily iced or temperatures remain unsafe after the unit has had time to stabilise, arrange service rather than repeatedly changing settings.
The freezer has excessive ice
Inspect the gasket and door alignment and look for a drawer that does not close completely. Do not chip ice with a knife or apply uncontrolled heat; hidden liners and refrigerant paths can be damaged.

There is water under the drawers
Remove spoiled food and check for obvious blockage or a container spill, then inspect whether the door seal and cabinet are level. Persistent water requires a technician because drainage, defrost and insulation faults can look similar.
The refrigerator is noisy
Identify when the sound occurs: compressor start, fan operation, defrost or cabinet vibration. A technician should evaluate grinding, repeated clicking, electrical buzzing or a noise accompanied by poor cooling.
Recommended Free Tools
Who should buy one, and who should choose something else?
Buy the NR-BX46BVWAU only if you are comfortable evaluating an older discontinued appliance and can verify support before money changes hands. It is most defensible as a carefully inspected bargain, a temporary replacement or a layout-specific choice that current models cannot match.
Choose a current refrigerator instead when you need predictable warranty coverage, guaranteed parts availability, immediate retailer support or a low-effort purchase. The model’s documented capacity and feature set remain respectable on paper, but the missing public test scores and discontinued status make condition and support more important than the Panasonic badge.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I fit a generic shelf or drawer in the NR-BX46BVWAU?
Not safely on appearance alone. Interior parts must match the mounting points, load rating, clearances and door or drawer geometry; ask Panasonic or an authorised technician to confirm the exact part number before using a substitute.
Will a retailer’s warranty cover discontinued stock?
It depends on the seller’s written terms, the sale country and the date warranty coverage begins. Request the warranty document and invoice before paying, and confirm who handles labour, transport and parts if the manufacturer no longer sells the model.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow do I convert the refrigerator’s energy figure into a yearly cost?
Multiply the published annual kilowatt-hour figure by your electricity tariff per kilowatt-hour. Use the result as an estimate: household conditions can produce a different measured consumption, especially in a hot room or with poor ventilation.
What should the model plate show before I buy one online?
Ask for a clear photograph showing the complete NR-BX46BVWAU code, serial number and electrical information. Those details let a service provider check regional eligibility and parts compatibility instead of relying on a seller’s abbreviated description.
